Flushing Learning Curve Excuse Down Toilet

Another new signing reveals the bigger picture

Yes, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed likely backup cornerback Sterling Moore in free agency late this afternoon.

But Moore represents a bigger picture.

That picture is Lovie Smith being sick and tired of the growing pains suffered by his defense.

That excuse has to die a speedy death — as in before the first week of August. Joe heard that excuse wayyyy to many times last year. Joe didn’t hear that coming out of Minnesota, where Mike Zimmer jumped into the fire, or in Cleveland.

Moore comes from the Cowboys, where Rod Marinelli coaches a defense nearly identical to Lovie’s

New signings Henry Melton (defensive tackle) and Bruce Carter (linebacker) also came from the Cowboys.

Safety Chris Conte? He spent years with Lovie in Chicago. So did Melton.

Keep in mind the Bucs re-signed potential free agents Danny Lansanah and Leonard Johnson. They know the system.

Joe is sure Lovie doesn’t want any defensive players thinking too much this season, just playing instinctively in his defense.

Now all Lovie needs is an edge rusher who can get off and play like a beast. Free agent defensive end Greg Hardy played in a defense just like the Bucs’, under Lovie’s former defensive coordinator, Carolina head coach Ron Rivera.

I was going to say something yesterday about signing him. He played well when Claiborne went down. This the off-season I’ve been waiting for. Love all the decisions to release players and add players with the exception of Conte

  4. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Yeah, I wasn’t happy last year when the off season played out. Didn’t like McCown, Johnson or EDS signings. Didn’t like hirings of Tedford or Frazier.

Of those 5, only 1 is still here, so I guess my instincts were good.

FYI, Mariota Pro Day on NFLN right now. Mayock hinted that he might put Mariota at top of his list after both pro days.

“If they are even remotely close, you go with Mariota.”

  5. Not "The Kevin" Says:

    Or Tampa Bay BearBoys….

  6. John Says:

We’d better have one heck of a draft. Aside from adding Carter, we have not gotten better. Conte sucked out loud last year. Melton is going to be a bit player at best.

Yeah, I know. They are going to excel in Lovie’s system……

  7. Jeagan1999 Says:

Joe, not sure if you are watching Mariota’s pro day on NFL Network, but very interesting comment by Mike Mayock….I’m paraphrasing here….”If you’re tampa bay, and you think Winston and Mariota are in the same ballpark, you gotta take Mariota.” (Because he’s “cleaner” off the field).

I wonder if impressions of these Winston is starting to change? Mayock did have Winston as his #1 guy in his latest mock, but maybe that is changing now? Will be interesting to see how Mariota throws today and how he looks under center.

  8. ForgotAbootDre Says:

So we officially signed Moore then? I’ve only heard about him visiting.

I discredit anything mayock says anymore because when jamal charles went down in the playoffs he didn’t even know who the hell knile davis was. If you’re a college football analyst and you don’t know who the best back in the SEC was before he got injured at Arkansas then I don’t want to here nothing you have to say. And this was after he said Mark Barron’s floor (potential) was pro bowl lmao he didn’t even mention his ceiling.

This is what happens when you do not have an experienced, qualified executive running the organization. The Bucs are rudderless. Last year’s plan did not work, so throw it out and try something else. So tired of this.

  16. Yeah It's me! Says:

Uh, EDS and Frazier still here. Tedford’s only gone bc of health. McCown would probably still be here if we weren’t drafting Winston with the first pick. He was the best FA QB on the market, Just saying.
I do like what there doing this year so far. Keep going!

  17. New#8or5 Says:

Why does the all seem to be shaping into an utterly disappointing draft. Like a trade down and an edge rusher. Lovie thinks we can win with great defense correct. If he doesn’t get us a QB with the first overall pick I’ll be pissed.

  18. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

Just get Marinelli then….because obviously Lovie can’t coach new guys to play the D. Seeing how some of us are saying Marinelli is what made Lovie in Chicago.

  19. iamkingsu Says:

And if you’re basing who is the best qb off of a pro day then you should not have a job doing what you do.

And I’m pretty certain which way he’s leaning.

  25. Stpetebucsfan Says:

Guys I know I can be a pain in the arse but I’m a writer and words matter.

    @John

Not to nitpick your sentence…OK call me a nitpicker. 🙂

You said…”Melton is going to be a bit player at best.”

That’s simply untrue. I might be that Melton is a bit player or worse but that’s nowhere near his best. If he can reach half his best he’ll be a solid addition.
Remember Melton played for a brand new team last year, admittedly in a familiar defense, but coming off a knee injury. He now has another year of healing on that knee and with GMC and perhaps a Hardy to upgrade our rush it will make players like Melton and McDonald just that much better. Hate to be repetitive but football is still a team sport. Good players elevate the play of those around them.

BTW John here is what happens “at best”. Not saying it will happen but if it’s happened before it can happen again and so far in his career by definition this is the “best” that Melton can offer!

In 2012, during organized team activities (OTAs), Melton appeared in the backfield as a running back, resembling former Bears defensive lineman and fullback William Perry; Melton had not played running back since his days at Texas.[15] In the season opener against the Indianapolis Colts, Melton sacked Andrew Luck twice, as the Bears went on to win 41-21.[16] On December 26, Melton was named to his first Pro Bowl.[17] In the 2012 season, Melton recorded 32 tackles and six sacks, tied for third in the league among defensive tackles.[18] On March 1, 2013, Melton was given the franchise tag by the Bears,[19] worth $8.45 million.[20]

Now he showing all of us that he can’t develop or coach so he’ll just sign cast-off from rod n Rivera. That’s one way to do it. It sad really, if rod would have been able to come to TB I’d be excited. You could give lovie a team full of probowlers and he’d still disappoint. Oh my bad I’m supposed to be positive. I agree 1000% with Mayock…. Problem is Mariotta isn’t close to Winston. Everyone loves Mariota so they want to rank him higher…. But they can’t once they do the comparison. Embrace your future…. Jameis Winston QB Tampa Bay Buccaneers!

  35. iamkingsu Says:

This is why you don’t judge stuff off pro days lmaoooo!! Because its a friggin pro day. Mayock should be embarrassed!

  36. iamkingsu Says:

    @joe
I saw that article with the gorillas before you took it down. But I didn’t want to comment because I was waiting for Mariota pro day to end. But that was poor taste for using that picture

It only came down because it wasn’t supposed to publish. It wasn’t even a story. There was no content to it, if you noticed. It was supposed to go in Joe’s draft folder. –Joe

  37. Eric Says:

Except Lovie took the Bears to the Super Bowl before Rod Marinelli even joined his staff.

    That didn’t happen until 2009.

After Rod went 0-16 with the Lions.

    Nice try though.

  38. getaclue Says:

Nothing was impressive with his pro day, deep passed were off, poor velocity and placement and alot of check down throws

  39. Chef Paul Says:

Mariota says “um” more than Obama.

  40. Flmike Says:

Sitting here watching Matiota’s pro day, and NFLN’s Jerimeah is just ripping the kid, it’s kinda sad to hear this guy justifying his pick of Winston based on Mariota’s pro day….

  41. Jeagan1999 Says:

    Mariota done throwing….my thoughts:

Throws nice short and intermediate balls.
Needs work on some of the long balls.
No problems with the center exchange.
Put a little too much air under some of the throws.
Foot works still needs a bit of work, but not too bad overall.
Didn’t really throw a lot of different kinds of passes.
Did throw a few nice play action passes.

All in all, he looked a bit rusty and maybe a bit nervous, but as many have said before, you don’t make a decision off of a pro-day performance. The good news was no issues with the center or play action.

  42. Stpetebucsfan Says:

“Everyone loves Mariota so they want to rank him higher…. ”

That’s certainly not true on this board. And according to the Winstonites Fameis is now the pick in virtually every mock draft taken since March 1st.

    And so two questions.

1.) What do you base your statement on? Everybody? loves Mariota?

2.) If this is true WHY? Remember MM is not a white player so please spare me any race cards.

  43. Jeagan1999 Says:

Don’t thing MM did much to hurt or help himself today. As a Mariota guy I was a bit disappointed with the deep balls, and I would have liked to see him put a little more heat on some of his throws, but without a defense to throw against, he probably could have been a bit sharper!

  44. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    HFXBUC Says
“I agree 1000% with Mayock…. Problem is Mariotta isn’t close to Winston.”

    That’s not what Mayock said.

  45. iamkingsu Says:

Everyone was less than impressed with Mariota’s pro day besides Mayock lmao. He’s f’n clueless. He has great mayockisms but that’s about it

  46. Stpetebucsfan Says:

Mariota says “um” more than Obama.

How about Sarah Palin? Does he sound as idiotic and uneducated as her?

IF you answer yes then we’ll know how bad Mariota really speaks. Does he mangle syntax like Sarah?

Now why can’t you just leave politics out of it. Your posting from an incredibly thin glass house. I’d just leave it alone!

  47. Tampabaybucfan Says:

A couple of Mariota Pro Day observations…

Every snap was under center. No shotgun throws…
Commentators said he made many throws he didn’t throw in the Oregon offense to show he could make them.
    Did miss some deep routes….
Short & Medium routes, very crisp
Don’t think it revealed much we didn’t already know…except he took 60 plus snaps from center (looks fine there)

  48. iamkingsu Says:

I’ve been saying he’s not even a 1st round talent but people look at his stats added to his athletic ability and try and put 2 and 2 together. I saw him play live he’s even faster in person but he has know natural qb feel. Helluva athlete though!!

  49. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    getaclue Says
“Nothing was impressive with his pro day…”

    Not true.

His footwork was good. He did 3 step, 5 step and seven step drops. He made pro plays. Yes, some of the deep balls need work, but he did get the balls out there, and not all of them were bad passes.

No quarterback completes 100 percent of his passes, and deep balls are the lowest percentage ones.

He threw off the proper foot on every play (something Winston cannot do), he handled the exchange from under center without any mistakes (something Winstonites claimed he couldn’t do) and he didn’t let the misses get to him. He took no passes from shotgun. Why? To prove he didn’t have to. They huddled plenty, something the Winstonites claim he can do.

    Areas that need work?

His deep passes. When he stretched the players, they dropped the passes. So he started placing the ball a little short.

The hosts said his speed of release needed work…sorry, but they are totally wrong on that. Leading up to the combine, the complaint on him was that he played too fast. Ironically, he played at Winston speed today.

He was nervous at first, but got better as it progressed. Solid workout.

  50. Eric Says:

If he thought he was catching Jameis with that performance……..

    Nope.

  51. iamkingsu Says:

Damn mayock can back pedal (he was a former db) because he just told Mariota “I thought you ripped it” to his face. He mustve caught word what word of how everyone else felt about it

  53. iamkingsu Says:

Just let it go mane lol. Its over the footwork was even worse. He wasn’t getting even getting proper depth on his dropbacks smh. Winston was thee only pick

  54. bucrightoff Says:

But Eric, has Winston even got close to Manziel as a prospect? We should still trade #1 overall to Cleveland since Manziel is so much better right?

  55. tmaxcon Says:

If you’re nervous for a scripted pro day in a controlled environment that’s not the guy I want leading my team in a tight playoff game. I like Mariota I think he will do well in a few years. Wish him luck. Lovie needs Winston not a project.

  56. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

The commentators and analysts were cutting up some of Mariota’s throws especially Casserly.

You wouldn’t know that from the MM crowd. They must have had the volume turned down.

  57. iamkingsu Says:

In the redzone he was just throwing “catchable” balls. You gotta drive it down there everyone’s watching! They know what they see he was just trying to compete passes! That ish was horrible they can’t say it but I can

  64. Bucs fan 76 Says:

  81. Jeagan1999 Says:

I will be the first to admit Mariota was not as sharp as I thought he could be. That being said, he also answered a lot of questions. His center exchanges were crisp….all 65 passes were from the direct snap. His drop backs and footwork were also more than adequate to show that he can operate in more than just the shotgun. His short and intermediate passes were very crisp. He even turned his back to the plays and threw some nice play action passes.

Clearly he still has some work to do on timing…especially on the deep balls. Was it a great pro day? Clearly not, but I think he tried to do a lot and maybe a few things suffered because of it. He threw at the Combine much better. How many times have we heard “you can’t judge a guy by his pro day”? My guess is that if Mariota had been perfect all afternoon the Winston guys would have said pro days mean nothing, and they would have disappeared faster than Hillary Clinton’s email!

Again I’m not against taking a chance on Fameis. But you guys are simply delusional if you do not believe his behavior has merited all this attention.

Fameis is a serial screw up. His defenders keep trying to take shoplifting and mischief with guns or cursing as kids cutting up in college.

NO. He was the face of the FSU franchise the face of their NC! Give him the benefit of the doubt on the rape but why didn’t he at least have the smarts to lay low instead of getting suspended for half of one of the biggest games of the year? Embarrassing the beejesus out of Jimbo and FSU nation.

This is not about comparing the degree of offenses it’s about establishing patterns and trying to determine from those patterns if there is any indication they may occur in the future. That’s just smart not hating.

I feel certain under this huge cloud of PR that the Glazers have done all the due diligence possible. IF after all that they decide to draft him then I’m on board.
    Bring Fameis to town.

But could we please get him to change numbers? When I see the #5 on a Bucs QB I immediately think head case.

Another bad FA season for the Bucs

    * signs a LB and will ask him to play out of his normal position
    * Signs DT and will also ask him to play out of his normal position
    * Signs a safety that got beat last year more often than Rod “Toast” Jones
    * signs a reserve corner.

Are any of these signings a huge improvement from last year. Not really.

Lovie’s got 10 months left as coach

If the Bucs can stomach Greg Hardy, it would indicate they could stomach Jameis.

I’m not supporting Hardy and am puzzled by the support. However, it does speak to the fickleness of male football fans. He’s another guy who will likely end up in jail. I don’t get the winning is more important than character and how you play the game mentality.
