“Custodian of Canton” Urges Calm
March 12th, 2015It’s been a long time since Joe has seen Bucs fans freak out on Twitter when it wasn’t after yet another loss.
But they were freaking out last night on what could be classified as a loss.
In dire need of help (again) on the front line, the Bucs hosted former Raiders starting center Stefen Wisniewski. The Penn Stater left One Buc Palace without a contract and made a beeline for Seattle, which happens to have an opening at center.
Feel free to do the math on this one.
Calm down, cautions the “Custodian of Canton,” eye-RAH! Kaufman of The Tampa Tribune.
Yesterday, Kaufman appeared with host Tom Viet on WHBO-AM 1040 and tried to ease the nerves of Bucs fans who were running to the Sunshine Skyway Bridge after Tampa Bay lost out on Trent Cole and hadn’t brought a big name to Tampa.
“Bucs fans are up in arms. ‘Why aren’t they doing anything?’ Kaufman said.”You know what? They are going to be active. They are going to sign some players. But they are not going to be the sexy players from last year and we all saw how that turned out.”
Exactly. Today is March 12. The season does not kick off for another six months. Lots of things and lots of transactions can take place. Lots.
Would the Bucs have liked to have signed Wiz last night? Absolutely. But it is not the end of the world. There is still a lot of time to plug the holes on the offensive line. Well, most of them.

Relax Bucs fans Lovie Smith is in control
March 12th, 2015 at 7:16 am
They should of had Jameis sign a contract when he was here also and they failed to get that done. I don’t think anyone believes that the Bucs have a clue what they’re doing.
March 12th, 2015 at 7:19 am
IRA is just a talking head, we need go build through the draft, instead of FA hand me downs
March 12th, 2015 at 7:29 am
Again…nobody wants to play here. We’re forced into wading at the shallow end of the tier two pool, with hopes of finding an unsuspecting talent.
March 12th, 2015 at 7:31 am
Relax Bucs Fans Jesus Christ Himself is coming April 30 !
March 12th, 2015 at 7:38 am
Hate to say it, but, based on how free agency has gone I see a trade down from the #1 spot in the draft. No other way to fix this team other than through the draft. To many holes and not enough decent tallent.
March 12th, 2015 at 7:45 am
It takes two to make a deal…..like it or not. Bucs either have to grossly overpay or let a player walk…In the case of Wiz…probably let him play c
March 12th, 2015 at 7:47 am
Probably had to let him play center and overpay him
March 12th, 2015 at 7:48 am
Relax everyone we are just a few peices away from 3-13.
March 12th, 2015 at 7:50 am
Looking like our 2nd will surely be spent on O line.
March 12th, 2015 at 7:50 am
Reminds me of the scene from Animal House (the movie) when young Kevin Bacon’s character (the ROTC cadet) begs the stampeding crowd:
“Stay calm! All is well!”
Lovie is always calm and should be, like the ghost of Michael Johnson, he is being paid huge guaranteed money no matter how bad his team performs….
You see players with “incentive” contracts, they should start that with coaches.
March 12th, 2015 at 7:51 am
DallasBuc its the nail right on the head. That’s how you define the problem in less than 10 words. Editors take note.
March 12th, 2015 at 7:54 am
Last year these guys treated the O-line like it was less important than what they eat for breakfast. Releasing everybody, drafting them late, then finally getting Mankins very very late in the game. I say fans have every right to be over reacting about this topic. Have they done anything (literally anything?) to make us feel like we should just sit back and trust them?
March 12th, 2015 at 7:57 am
It is going to get worse before it gets better folks….
March 12th, 2015 at 7:59 am
Be honest… If you were these guys would you want to play for the Bucs next year?
Also some of these ads are blowing up my android chrome browser. It a problem that popped up in the last 24 hours.
March 12th, 2015 at 8:01 am
Lovie and Kelly are in a race to see who can set a franchise back the furthest the fastest.
Until the glazer clowns realize they made yet another coaching mistake get used to 2 to 4 wins. Lovie is a joke. Stop living in the past it never works.
March 12th, 2015 at 8:03 am
I am probably one of the most positive/optimistic posters here…..and I will be patient until all is settled on the Oline…..after the draft and trades….but if we don’t seriously address our Oline….I will explode, and it won’t be pretty!!!

I hope Pablo is holding up ok watching Lovie screw up another off season.
March 12th, 2015 at 8:12 am
You guys are too antsy. The Bucs were’nt built in a century.
March 12th, 2015 at 8:15 am
Oakland signed an FSU player for $44.5 million to play center for 5 years. Oakland has the 31st ranked rushing attack in the league last year. Might be why the Wiz is a FA. Could be the OL was so concerned about keeping Carr alive they forgot how to run block.
March 12th, 2015 at 8:17 am
Easy for Media types to say stay calm, relax, it takes time to build, be patient, when they don’t spend money to get into games, or on merchandise.
I’m sick of the losing, I’m angry, and embarrased by this team. Do something to get me excited, or myself and many others will keep our hard earned money instead of wasting it on a team going no where.
GO BUCS
March 12th, 2015 at 8:27 am
Although Ira is right, he needs to quit going out to eat with Shaun King.
March 12th, 2015 at 8:32 am
There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that the BUCS are not worried about the OL. I mean, check it out…. last year they were sort of counting on Carl Nicks… but… guess what ? …. he couldn’t play ! so… what do they do ? NOTHING…. only after the preseason started and the OL was called out… they made a deal for Mankins….. good player… a little late though… for him to adjust after being “THE MAN” in NE at this lte date was expecting too much ! So… what else did they do ? Count on Cousins ! OMG ! If this isn’t proof that the Bucs undervalue OL play, I don’t know what is ! so… what does Lovie say…. “we will play better (OL) this year” ! well.. no duh… pretty hard not to ! … but just further evidence that the Bucs don’ want/value an ELITE (or maybe, even GOOD) OL. It’s just a bunch of big guys that you can “plug and play” (and don’t have to pay)…. right, Lovie ? Now, I tired of Gruden’s ways quite a bit (though I will always love him for our Super Bowl)… but one thing I will say in his defense…. he really tried to build the OL…drafted Joseph, and the right OT from BC… got the center and Carl Nicks from NO…. I mean… he tried ! and knew the importance of the OL….. I mean there are two trains of thought in the NFL… get the SKILL guys and “just get by” with average OL … or… build your OL and then fill in the missing skill guys…. For an easy and recent lesson on which works best… check out Dallas… or another team on the opposite side of the spectrum who has been “impact position” oriented…and see who comes out on top and lasts,,, (can’t come up with a good example off the top of my head… I’m sure there are many… maybe WAS ?}… anyway.. any fancy house is only as good as its foundation !

Anyone know how to remove characters from the “website” box so I won’t post in red….I delete it but it still shows up…..

TBBF,
Try deleting it and posting something immediately.

Speaking for Pablo
“Pablo thought an offensive line was like when Pablo stood in line at Taco Bell behind several Florida roofers. Pablo now knows that wasn’t what the Bucs have….but Pablo thinks it stinks also”
March 12th, 2015 at 9:03 am
I think I saw Pablo on a billboard in South Carolina while traveling north on I95.
March 12th, 2015 at 9:07 am
We signed sexy players last year?
Someone please explain to me how or when it became acceptable for a grown heterosexual man to use that terminology for another man? I just don’t get the analogy. Even if I were into that sort of thing, sexy isn’t exactly the word I’d use. Sweaty, beastly, talented, hard working etc…
March 12th, 2015 at 9:07 am
Lovie Smith has only ever had mediocre to bad offensive lines, usually closer to bad. Time to get used to it for his tenure.
March 12th, 2015 at 9:08 am
CALM DOWN Bucs fans, Lovie & Licht know what they’re doing! So what if Chris Conte was the worst safety in the NFL the last 2 years, Lovie knows more about him than you! So what if almost all of last year’s signings failed, Licht has spent his whole life working in an NFL front office!
Don’t question, don’t criticize, just accept that L&L know more than you! They don’t make mistakes and they don’t miss out on opportunities. They surely won’t be fired within a year or 2.
/sarcasm
March 12th, 2015 at 10:16 am
^^^JFF- that’s the way it is around here or else the fan police come out with their “true fan” indignation! Protecting Lovie and lapdog like it’s their mother you are talking about. Hilarious!
March 12th, 2015 at 10:39 am
Yeah! Let’s fire Lovie aftet two years! Then we can fire the next coach after two years, and then give the coach after that two years. That will get us back to the top in no time flat! Oh, iguess you guys forgot, the same people who hired Lovie will be hiring the next three coaches that you want to turn around the franchise within a two year window. Why don’t you guys do everyone here a favor and become Browns fans.
March 12th, 2015 at 10:44 am
Calm down Shane and think about the job these guys have done and the fact that we have earned the first overall pick in the draft in a generation. Most coaches don’t get to make that pick after leading a team to that pick. He has all the room in world considering he has only made this team worse. Remember all offseason last year he couldn’t stop arrogantly reminding everyone that we are a 4-12 football team.
March 12th, 2015 at 11:13 am
The Buccaneers will say otherwise, but I think it was pretty clear to EVERYONE at the end of last season that the Bucs coaches were tanking to get one of the top few picks to try to find that ELUSIVE franchise QB. So MOST of us think that given ACTUAL coaching (new offensive coordinator) that even the players we had LAST year would be playing better next season. At least that’s what most Bucs fan HOPE. So that being said, I am DYING to hear that the Bucs have at least TRIED to bolster the O-line this offseason.
March 12th, 2015 at 11:22 am
I hear you Dallas, and im not a huge Lovie guy, I’m a consistancy guy that realizes its gonna take more than two years to get us on track. 2-14 sucked, and im not happy about it, but at the same time I think its pretty obvious that we tanked a handfull of games at the end of the season for draft position. As long as we don’t have to see McClown and Cousins starting for us and the defense continues to improve as it did last year we wont be anywhere near 2-14, or 4-12 for that matter.
