“Coping With The Pass Rush”
March 4th, 2015It’s going to be hard to avoid a train wreck of a season from a Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie quarterback in 2015.
Barring a stunning overhaul and/or improvement of the Bucs offensive line, and the revival of the impotent Tampa Bay running attack, there would be no way to avoid chaos for Jameis Winston or Marcus Mariota.
But it’s Mariota who would face a unique struggle with the pass rush, says a prominent NFL scribe.
That would be pickpocket-thwarting, Bucs-uniform-frowning, Allie-LaForce-smitten, Big-Ten-Network-hating, pedestrian-bumping, olive oil-lapping, popcorn-munching, coffee-slurping, fried-chicken-eating, oatmeal-loving, circle-jerking, beer-chugging, cricket-watching, scone-loathing, college football-naïve, baseball-box-score-reading, NPR-listening, filthy-hotel-staying, fight-instigating, barista-training Peter King, of Sports Illustrated and NBC Sports fame.
King cranked out a very good video below, touching on many pros and cons of Mariota, from his film study and those of scouts and NFL types.
It’s worth watching. Joe also thinks it’s worth noting that Winston was knocked around quite a bit in his career behind some shaky-at-times line play, and on a bad ankle — and excess body weight — last season.

I smell the desperation in here. Yungry sounds like he’s holding his breath and stomping his feet.

If we trade down twice in the 1st round we will create a pass rush
as well as
neutralize the opposing defenses pass rush

@Yungry you can say that there are FSU fans here they don’t wanna know who Shameis really is
March 4th, 2015 at 5:56 pm
Both of these top QB’s will be pummeled into the ground by opposing defences behind the Bucs O line. I’m not against trading down for more picks, more is better and the Bucs need upgraded players at too many positions. Franchise QB’s, I don’t think these guys are it.
March 4th, 2015 at 5:57 pm

I like. Nice break down. History repeats itself?
March 4th, 2015 at 5:57 pm
FSU had a great O-line for Winston to camp out behind. Oregon not so much. Bucs fans witnessed what a bad O-line looks like last year. Either pick will struggle if the O-line doesn’t improve.

March 4th, 2015 at 6:05 pm
IM GONNA SAY THIS ONCE. STOP ENTERTAINING AND STATING FACTS TO PEOPLE WHO THINK A COURTROOM/INVESTIGATION DOESNT LEAVE THEIR LAPTOP. I’m more sick of reading paragraphs of people defending Jameis than I am the fools who wrongfully accuse him of anything but immaturity. Anyone who believes he raped her is stupid and you cannot fix stupid. Everyone should know that
March 4th, 2015 at 6:08 pm
Deacon
They only harp on the 18 Ints but never mention his 65/32 career TD/int ratio.

“I’ve studied a lot of him, I think Jameis Winston has a big upside in the NFL, but there are some real flaws to his game. Quite honestly, I would not take him at that No. 1 pick.
I’m not talking about the off-the-field stuff. I have no comment on that because I’m not privy to that kind of information. But there are certainly mechanical flaws in his game that are troubling to me.

Joe doesn’t post anti Winston articles, you guys should know that lol. Only anti Mariota, that’s why I have to go to other websites to get my information, this would be my one and only bucs site if it wasn’t so one sided. Oh well.
March 4th, 2015 at 6:23 pm
Bucs need to make it seem like they want Mariota, even if they don’t. That would force the Eagles to mortgage the farm.
March 4th, 2015 at 6:27 pm
silly luv
your comparisons mean bo diddly squat. it is not possible compare people accurately for projection. you are grasping at straws, as usual. otherwise this “reminds me of” luck and griffen iii. winston = luck and mariota = rg3.
see how silly this is?
March 4th, 2015 at 6:28 pm
I can’t to wait for the draft so I can get my WINston jersey and autographed rookie cards. Lets win Bucs.
March 4th, 2015 at 6:32 pm
@WS99
No problem brotha, just it was oddly similar. A lot of folks have forgotten that IF Matt Leinart would’ve entered the Draft in 2005. He would’ve been the consensus #1 pick.lol
March 4th, 2015 at 6:33 pm
If the Bucs select Jameis then they are picking the guy who has all the tools needed to become a NFL success. If it doesn’t work my finger will be pointed at Winston not at the choice the Bucs made.
If they pick Mariaota they are picking the guy who may have a arm but chooses to throw lollipops over the middle. He is an obvisous project and if it doesn’t pan out the Bucs will look like a bunch of idiots.
Uh yeah pick Jamies and his talent.
March 4th, 2015 at 6:36 pm
@Super Sam….This would be my one and only Bucs site if the writer didn’t write like a heckled 12 year old
March 4th, 2015 at 6:46 pm
@lurker
Not silly at all brotha. Just comparing QB’s that had Winning Streaks, Heisman’s, and National Championships. Its not like I brought up Gino Torretta or Ken Dorsey..lol
March 4th, 2015 at 6:48 pm
I am now fully prepared if Winston is the choice. I will be convinced that all due-diligence has been conducted and that everyone is on board with the decision.
It is still my opinioin, however that the on-field difference between the two QBs doesn’t warrant the risk and that the Glazers will see it that way.
That has been my opinoin from the beginning and that hasn’t changed….however, I have warmed up to Winston somewhat.
March 4th, 2015 at 6:50 pm
Yeah….just imagine if we still had our old line. I wasn’t a huge Penn fan but he always was capable. He just needed a good foot in the ass to motivate him. I didn’t think Joseph was done, he was returning from a bad injury. Zuttah….who the hell knows why we let him go….
I still believe our Line will look better with a proven OC running things, they need improvement but I don’t think they are THAT far off. Last year was a little misleading with Arroyo in charge of the offense.
March 4th, 2015 at 6:57 pm
I’m not feelin all this “risk” business with Winston. Not to dismiss that picking him comes with risk but Mariota has risk too. The dude could very easily fall into the flop category that so many other 1st round QB’s have. His skill set dictates that he comes with his own risk. Lets just put risk in perspective when we call Winston one.
March 4th, 2015 at 7:12 pm
I agree that Winston is basically the new Matt Leinart. C’mon L & L & the Glazer boys, don’t be stupid and pick that clown!!!

Yungry. you’re ridiculous!! You were talking about Winston, not Sharper, and YOU are the one assuming. Assuming that a girl who publicly alleges rape one year after the fact, with no charges subsequently filed, is telling the truth. And those comparing him to Matt Leinart…c’mon!! if ANYONE is Leinart, it’s mariotta!! A Pac-12 QB that won the Heisman because of the system he was in that was considered a project when he enetered the draft. That’s why he fell to #10. Just like Mariotta will do. He won’t go any earlier than #6, I promise you that. If we had the 10th pick, I’d take him. Not a hater. But the best QB prospect is Winston….period. That’s why he is #1 on all the draft boards and mock drafts. Like it or not, he’s about to be your QB of the Bucs. I can’t wait to see how silent all you haters are when he kicks ass.
March 4th, 2015 at 8:02 pm
I would draft MM just to spurn Kelly for what he did to us. Plus he’s got tons more upside.I don’t care if Lovie gets fired. I care about wins for a long time. Not off field problems and the possibility of him leaving for baseball. Given the right direction Marcus has proved he can excel.JW has too but the red flags scare me. I don’t want to have to hope for a first overall pick again in 5 years.

Its okay if you have reading comprehension problems. A lot of people suffer with this difficult task. Your local high schools should have GED classes or a tutor to help you understand what is written. I never said Winston was a rapist, you attached your boyfriend’s name to the label rapist. Not me! I will call him a thief though because it was on tape and there was an admission of guilt. I know you are mad but you only have to post your comment once. I know how to understand the English language after reading things 1 time. But, since you have a learning disability I can post twice to help your comprehension problems.

You know, when it gets to the point where the so called “Journalists” running the site start calling their readers “D-Bags” and “taking pride in being biased”…(are you frakking kidding me?) then it’s time to seriously reflect on why the hell am I even spending my valuable time on this site. A little bit of tease fluff to draw the views of Bucs fans who are bored during the long off-season, and dozens of off-colored comments hurled at each other behind the anonymity of the internet, because I know none of you have the brass to walk up to each other’s face and say half the bile you spit out.
It gets old, very fast. That’s “my opinion”. I’m out.

Definition of assume: to think that something is true or probably true without knowing that it is true-sound familiar?
I never mentioned Winston’s name in the same sentence as a rapist or any other sexually-related matter at all. If I had said Winston was/is a rapist I could understand your point. Please copy/paste verbatim what I wrote that ever said that Winston raped anyone.
March 4th, 2015 at 11:19 pm
yungry, you are being dense or silly, and either is a waste of my time, right now. there is no stretch of the “image” (as you like to say) that if you say rapist, what is implied. if you do not know the definition of imply, it is above. your backtracking does not matter to me now. most on here know what was stated and implied.
March 4th, 2015 at 11:21 pm
@Luv
Just because people were all hot and heavy for Leinart the year before he came out doesn’t mean he would have been the top pick.. Hello Teddy Bridgewater and Brady Quinn.. Scouts would have still found flaws in his game like they did whether he came out the year before or not..
Off topic..
Do any of the Winston haters or apologist’s say anything other than the same thing in every article about him? It’s got to get old defending him or trashing him constantly.. The constant articles on the QB situation are old and we are just under 2 months away from the draft (I know its the most important position and I’m in the draft MM with the 1st pick group btw).. Looks like I’ll be visiting BN more in the future to get away from the horrible comments allowed on here trashing each other constantly.
March 4th, 2015 at 11:27 pm
Take my words out of context if you want. I never said “image” either so again please stop making up these false allegations. Yeah I said it. I said “imagine” which refers to seeing words that do NOT exist like rapist and Winston in the same sentence. We are beating a dead horse. So please have a good night and GO Bucs #1
March 4th, 2015 at 11:29 pm
If you’re foolish enough to try to force Russell Wilson into a system he’s never played…don’t be surprised with sacks. You’d be a fool to do that.
It would be just as foolish to force Kid Fameis into Seattle’s, San Francisco’s, Carolina’s, or Philadelphia’s offense…he’d be a sack machine.
This is a stupid construct – I don’t accept that the Bucs are ONLY considering a drop back WCO system…
I’ve heard Bill Polian, Bill Walsh and Gil Brandt all say how you DO NOT force the talent into the system, you adapt the system to the QB.
Once John Beason or Ndamukong Suh type rushers start teeing up on ol’ slow-footed Kid Fameis (and don’t talk about ‘escapability’ – Eli is faster than this guy, had a better 3-cone, and SS…the first time he’s buried after a Anthony Collins or Demar Dotson “WATCH OUT” block form his blindside…he’s going to hear foot steps for the rest of his career. You’re going to see that there’s a HUGE difference between a bad offensive line in college, against defenders in the ACC…and a bad offensive line with the fastest defenders on Earth.
Any of you who think that Kid Fameis is going to produce wins in the NFL, this season, behind THIS offensive line – and without the benefit of a run game – are dillusional. No doubt you’ll all have excuses about how Koetter or Lovie, or Licht, didn’t do enough to make Kid Fameis successful.
Here’s a clue. there will be a lot of disillusioned Bucs fans if Kid Fameis doesn’t win..and we won’t be aiming it at Lovie, Licht, or Koetter.
No way this kid is going to be successful until AIN’T they draft this unbelievable, “once-in-a-lifetime” QB, a Left Tackle who’s just as expensive as Kid Fameis is now…which means we’ll have to a lot more losing…

It doesn’t matter – this isn’t about FSU fans taking NON-FSU fans to school over words in their post. You want that, go start your own blog.
This particular article only applies if you KNOW the Bucs are going to run “Pro-Style” (i.e., West Coast Offense) offense…and ONLY if the team that drafts Mariota pans to force him into the wrong offense.
I predict that the team that drafts Marcus Mariota will NOT force him into a legacy “Pro-Style” system you FSU fans insist only Kid Fameis is ready to run at the next level.
No, Mariota will go the next team that will convert to the offensive model that saw San Francisco and Seattle to 3 Super Bowls, allowed Cam & Carolina to win our division, and Philly to produce the 4th most productive offense in the NFL (2nd in the NFC), while utilizing NICK FOLES as their starting QB…
