A Pass Rusher Is Coming
March 20th, 2015OK, so free agency, unless the Bucs are looking for bargains at depth, is over. Given how the Bucs “won” free agency season last spring, Joe is happy the Bucs lost so terribly this spring.
Just a hunch, but Joe’s guessing Team Glazer is happy Nexium can be purchased over the counter now.
In Joe’s eyes, the Bucs need to fill three positions: quarterback, defensive end and pick your spot on the offensive line. For nervous fans wondering why the Bucs didn’t go hogwild again in free agency, Pat Yasinskas has comforting words posted at ESPN.com.
And now the [free agent] shelf is pretty much empty, and it looks like the Bucs have nowhere to turn. But that’s not quite true. There is another opportunity on the horizon.
That’s the NFL draft. It’s loaded with some good edge rushers. The Bucs won’t use the first overall pick on a pass rusher because that’s ticketed for a quarterback (either Jameis Winston or Marcus Mariota).
But the Bucs hold the second pick in the second round (No. 34 overall), and they should be able to get a pass rusher in that spot. UCLA’s Owamagbe Odighizuwa, Oregon’s Arik Armstead and LSU’s Danielle Hunter are among the pass rushers who could be available at that spot.
No less an authority than Mike Mayock of NFL.com has already stated this is such a top-heavy deep draft for defensive ends, maybe the best in years. And the Bucs have the No. 34 pick. Always, a decent player or two slips to the second round. Or the Bucs could trade back up into the first round and nab a defensive end?
It’s not the end of the world (yet).
March 20th, 2015 at 9:02 am
It’s possible, but they also need an Offensive Tackle, and they need to take Eric Kendricks at MLB with the third pick. We might…MIGHT get by without an OT if they can sign Wiz. That would fill the center and guard positions at least.
March 20th, 2015 at 9:04 am
So we need QB, DE, OT, OG, and MLB with our first 3 picks. What could go wrong?
March 20th, 2015 at 9:05 am
Scary to think the BUCS don’t draft a OT with the second pick
E.Flowers and/or C.Erving might slip to there
March 20th, 2015 at 9:06 am
*or even TJ Clemings
March 20th, 2015 at 9:07 am
I think Team Glazer put the brakes on the check book this year. We’ve spent tons the last few years, and Don’t have much to show for it now.
If Lovie wants new talent, He’s going to have to draft it, and Coach it!
March 20th, 2015 at 9:08 am
@Joe
“It’s not the end of the world (yet).”
What are you trying to do? Ruin the morning for the half of commenters here who simply love being Chicken Littles.
Haven’t you read Joe. At OBP the sky is falling…the sky is falling!
March 20th, 2015 at 9:09 am
We will probably grab a TE or RB in the second…
March 20th, 2015 at 9:09 am
Plug and play LT has to be a top priority…..humphries or flowers in 2nd round….don’t like Dotson at LT
March 20th, 2015 at 9:19 am
We need a STARTING: QB, DE, and TWO OL. That’s 4 positions we need to fill in the draft – 4 STARTING positions. Assuming QB and DE are #1 and #2, you trying to tell me we’re going to get two starters with picks #3 and #4? I’m skeptical. It’s possible, but you know – tough to do to go 4 for 4 in starters your first four picks.
March 20th, 2015 at 9:22 am
Don’t forget that the #1 pick gives us first shot at the waiver wire……we have cap space and get to pick first and there will be some decent players cut.
Our pick at 34 is close to a first round pick and we should be able to get a good Olineman @ 65……
March 20th, 2015 at 9:22 am
The Glazers have needed Nexium for six years.
Even during that time when the super fabulous Mark Dominik was here, along with the superlative Raheem Morris and the spectacular Greg Schiano.
Lovie will get us out of this disaster he inherited, given a little time.
Lots of close losses last year where we were one or two play away from victory.
Go Lovie.
March 20th, 2015 at 9:25 am
Odighizuwa, hip injuries have to be concern. Especially with him missing all of 2013-while he recovered from not one but two hip surgeries. A recurring injury or degenerative condition could end his career quickly.
←Remember the last to prospect to come out of UCLA– with an existing hip condition –*BRIAN PRICE
March 20th, 2015 at 9:28 am
If we’re going DE with our 2nd pick, then give me Nate Orchard, and he just might be there at the top of the 2nd!
March 20th, 2015 at 9:30 am
Ahh another beautiful day in Tampa bay. You guys ready for some more arguing and name calling today? Lol.
This is what made me chuckle this morning, thank you I needed a good laugh.
“If Lovie wants new talent, He’s going to have to draft it, and Coach it!”
Now that’s funny.
Ps. The ground is crumbling
March 20th, 2015 at 9:32 am
Do we “REALLY” understand how many years in a row draft pundits miss on DE’s. I’ve been actually studying the draft (for my Buc’s knowledge) for 3yrs now. I save all the top experts to see who is the more accurate. And if you think the QB’s are hard to gauge, look at ALL of the DE BUSTS. And personally I have NO FAITH that Lovie can pick a good one, remember he took Gains Adams from us. Hardy was Lovie’s chance to land his “J. Peppers” and he missed. So for all holding your breath for a rookie to come in and beat he leagues best OL position, good luck with that! It ain’t happening! Especially if Lovie chooses! I use to support the man, even wanted him back when we chose Schiano, God that was a bad wish!
March 20th, 2015 at 9:37 am
(Outside Speed Rushers)
• Lorenzo Mauldin (Louisville) 6-4 || 252 ||40-Time: 4.75
• Davis Tull (Tennessee-Chattanooga) 6-3 || 240 || 40-Time: 4.60
Outside / Inside Pass Rusher
• Preston Smith (Mississippi St.) 6-6 || 270 || 40-Time: 4.90
• Henry Anderson (Stanford) 6-6 || 287 || 40-Time: 5.05
March 20th, 2015 at 9:37 am
Bonzai, Kendricks is a 2nd rd pick. No easy he slips to 3rd
March 20th, 2015 at 9:38 am
“No less an authority Mike Mayock” also said that you have to take Mariota because Winston’s too big of a risk.
March 20th, 2015 at 9:51 am
@MadMax
Nate Orchard is solid
March 20th, 2015 at 9:55 am
Yes Sir Brother Luv! And he’ll probably be there when we pick in the 2nd…..and I wouldnt gamble on him falling much after that.
March 20th, 2015 at 9:56 am
Well Lovie picked good enough in Chicago to field top ten defenses on a regular basis.
And how about that Evans pick? Rookie of the year candidate.
Just a little patience please.
Geez.
March 20th, 2015 at 9:58 am
Off topic.
That awkward moment when your wife texts you “happy anniversary”. Uhm yea right back at cha. Lmao oops.
March 20th, 2015 at 10:00 am
Preston Smith is another to look at very closely!
March 20th, 2015 at 10:00 am
Eric
It’s takes time. We’re on the verge.
March 20th, 2015 at 10:00 am
Yep-your right-he should be there in the 2nd
Are you worried about his 1 year mass production?
March 20th, 2015 at 10:01 am
@ws99, you live that far away from her?
March 20th, 2015 at 10:03 am
Na, I think he’s just getting his motor going Luv. I’d gamble our 2nd on him…and he’s growing, can easily put on another 10 to 15 lbs.
March 20th, 2015 at 10:04 am
@WS99
Lol, yeah
March 20th, 2015 at 10:04 am
What’s this talk about George Selvie? Is he a rotational option?
March 20th, 2015 at 10:06 am
@MadMax
I can respect that
March 20th, 2015 at 10:07 am
@LUV, heres an answer to why he improved so much last year.
“Improved hand use as a senior to work off blocks, keeping himself clean with good length for the position. Works his tail off and highly competitive, giving consistent effort each snap and through the whistle. Wants to be the best and expects a lot out of himself. Defensive leader with excellent physical and mental toughness (wore the ?C? proudly on his Utah jersey). Experienced at left and right defensive end
March 20th, 2015 at 10:09 am
Max
I know there’s a joke in there somewhere. Lol
March 20th, 2015 at 10:11 am
what a desperate state this city is in, it’s honestly hilarious how the draft picks are talked about in the same light as top end free agents lol people that have been on here talking as if they know Winston or mariotta would be a bust with the first pick overall but sit here talking about 2nd round defensive ends as if one is going to come in here and blow the competition in house away. no wonder your mad every year and disappointed that a rookie usually actually has to develop
before someone starts taking shots at me for my take i’ll end my comments with this :Aaron Donald, Anthony Barr, Justin Gilbert, Khalil Mack, Clowney, C.J. Mosley
all these guys were picked 17th overall or earlier somebody please tell me what other picks had their kind of season being picked later in the first or second round because none stand out to me. just accept that lavonte david was one of the rare exceptions and usually teams get 3rd round picks more like mason foster not lavonte david. I like ASJ in the 2nd last year but still taking him time to come on in the nfl
March 20th, 2015 at 10:11 am
If we’re going QB with our 1st, as much as I want a LT, we’re also in dire need of pass rush and Orchard fits the bill IMO….and we can pick up Ali Marpet for the O line with our 3rd.
March 20th, 2015 at 10:13 am
What No Luv for Lorenzo Mauldin?

March 20th, 2015 at 10:13 am
@WS99, Exactly! HAHAHA!!
March 20th, 2015 at 10:13 am
@madmax Orchard could fall to the 3rd
March 20th, 2015 at 10:20 am
I picked up the same tome from the first three stories posted, too, StPeteBucFan.
It’s just a ploy bY Joe to pick up hits on his site by the haters so he can show it to his advertisers.
He plays these haters like they were his puppets which they are.
Every time I hear what a teams need are I hear “edge rusher.”
I think thee are 26 teams looking for edge rushers.
Was listening to the Dummy talking out of both sides of his mouth last night on Sirrus NFL about Adrian Clayborn who he had as a guest.
Making all the excuses about why he hadn’t developed into an edge rusher. Said he didn’t draft him with that in mind.
Really!
This team needed an edge rusher back then and that’s not what you drafted him for.
No wonder he will never get another GM job in the league after the train wreck he engineered.
Next thing we will hear is he didn’t draft Freeman to be a Super Bowl QB.
March 20th, 2015 at 10:23 am
LOL…
You have no one to blame but yourself on that one. You should’ve done like I did and made sure your wedding anniversary was around the same time as a holiday.
My wedding was 5/25 last year…Memorial Day weekend. LOL.
I think 1-800-flowers does same day delivery. I also don’t think its too late to do some dinner reservations.
good luck.
March 20th, 2015 at 10:25 am
If Orchard falls to the 3rd, than thats even better, we can get him there after going LT with our 2nd. I just like the guy, has a high motor, even in his interview on utube, he’s ready to get after it. Dude has a motor and we need that.
March 20th, 2015 at 10:33 am
I hear you brotha-feel the same about Lorenzo Mauldin
March 20th, 2015 at 10:35 am
I think Orchard will be there in the 3rd as well.
March 20th, 2015 at 10:38 am
My dream first 4 rounds would be:
1. Jameis
2. Cam Erving
3. Nate Orchard
4. Tyler Lockett
March 20th, 2015 at 10:39 am
Mauldin is awesome against the run, just not much of an edge rusher after the QB.
March 20th, 2015 at 11:07 am
I just hope that no matter what the L & L team do, that they get it right.
March 20th, 2015 at 11:12 am
@bucs4lyfe
What No Luv for
21 New England Patriots Chandler Jones DE Syracuse
25 New England Patriots Dont’a Hightower LB Alabama
29 Minnesota Vikings Harrison Smith DB Notre Dame
46 Philadelphia Eagles Mychal Kendricks LB California
47 Seattle Seahawks Bobby Wagner LB Utah State
62 Green Bay Packers Casey Hayward CB Vanderbilt
65 St. Louis Rams Trumaine Johnson CB Montana
(Solid Later Prospects that year )
105 Buffalo Bills Nigel Bradham LB Florida State
123 Philadelphia Eagles Brandon Boykin CB Georgia
132 Green Bay Packers Mike Daniels DE Iowa
142 Jacksonville Jaguars Brandon Marshall LB Nevada-Reno
March 20th, 2015 at 11:23 am
Wisniewski is still out there. Equal money I’m sure he’ll choose Seattle, but if the Bucs could make it happen I think it would be a major boost!
March 20th, 2015 at 11:30 am
A pass rusher is coming, but not necessarily from the DE position…his name very well could bec Leonard Williams if the Bucs stay at #1. I realize for many here it is unfathomable that the Bucs could very well pass on Winston or Mariota, but neither player will likely make an immediate positive impact on the field (as in winning!) as Williams potentially can
March 20th, 2015 at 1:11 pm
I am feeling very good about the BUCS FA, Waiver Wire, and Draft plan. I can see us filling our needs with quality picks.
March 20th, 2015 at 1:19 pm
@LuvmyBucs
Davis Tull (Tennessee-Chattanooga) 6-3 || 240 || 40-Time: 4.60
There you go. Remember T.O. came from UTC. I think lots of the diamonds come from smaller schools in unheralded conferences. Of course you have to dig to get past all the cubic zirconia to the real diamonds.
But damn…a 4.6 40 on a DL looks promising.
March 20th, 2015 at 1:21 pm
The Bucs need a DE but they desperately need to fill the holes on the OL before anything else.
March 20th, 2015 at 1:25 pm
Owa is a top 20 talent so if he’s available in the 2nd round that means he has major injury redflags with his foot. In that case I’ll pass on another potential Price/Bowers situation.
March 20th, 2015 at 1:40 pm
As much as we need a pass-rusher, I think O-line help is more of a need…DE Lorenzo Mauldin out Louisville should be available in the early 3rd Round..
1st. J. Winston
2nd. OL
3rd. DE
4th. OL
…
March 20th, 2015 at 1:55 pm
I’ve been saying this on here since the combine if his hips check out its a no brainer. Again we lucked up because dallas needs a running back and seattle traded away their number 1
March 20th, 2015 at 5:29 pm
@Eric, I couldn’t agree with you more. Sometimes people can’t see the forest for the trees. Build through the draft and develop. Go Bucs!
March 20th, 2015 at 5:46 pm
DE>OL our defense will keep us in games with a struggling rook.
