30 Days Until Glennon Takes The Field

March 21st, 2015

Glennonwide

Barring a change in plans, Tampa Bay will report back One Buc Palace in 30 days. Attendance is taken, physicals are performed, and practice and study begin with Dirk Koetter’s shiny new playbook.

The Bucs have yet to sign a veteran quarterback who could help mentor a rookie and make Mike Glennon expendable via trade — a trade that could help Tampa Bay move up in next month’s NFL Draft, which starts in 40 days.

So that means the labeled “quarterback of the future” will be the first man in charge.

It’s possible the Bucs want to get a deep look at Glennon operating as the lead dog before the draft to see how he fits and evaluate his command. For Glennon, it could be as important an audition as the five starts he made last season.

The Bucs still have plenty of time to sign a veteran. There are live backup bodies on the market.

Joe still suspects Lovie Smith has Jason Campbell on his radar. The 33-year-old has much more game experience and wins than Josh McCown, and he was praised for his mentoring of Andy Dalton. Also, Campbell was Lovie’s backup in Chicago in 2012.

Please not an other Bear that played for Lovie.

  2. biff barker Says:

What has Jason Campbell done? Much like McCown, he’s a has been that never was.

  3. Brian Dorry Says:

    Biff,

Campbell isn’t going to start…he would be backing up Jameis.

  4. See Below Says:

It’s proven on a near daily basis just how stupid this new post-Fantasy Football Era Buc fan base is and each time I read the comments section here, all doubts are removed.

I sure hope I won’t have to sit next to you idiots at Ray Jay each Sunday as I know for a fact I have before and would hate to do it again without a Shotgun.

  5. bucs4lyfe Says:

He gets all his reps in training camp lol he’ll be back on the bench during the season plus of course they’ll go to camp with 3-4 quarterbacks in the roster but the fact that they haven’t signed any free agent is odd

  6. James Says:

ohhh man, Joe just gave the Glennon Mob jerk off material. By the beginning of the season the Glennon Mobs main lube will be tears.

  7. bucgator Says:

    ………………………….
Glennon isn’t going anywhere. Surprised that nobody can see it.

  8. Shipwrecked87 Says:

Man I’ve been dreaming of Mariota being a Buc for the last 2 years, but the last few weeks I’m now favouring Winston. It makes more and more sense that he is the pick but Glennon would be such a quality backup. Yes we need linemen help on both sides, but no way should we trade him unless we get a good pick for him, such as a 3rd rounder. That could allow us to go get a DE in the second then two OLs in the third or vice-versa.

  9. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

Well at least the Glennon Mob are, as you put it, “jerking off” to a guy who is actually on the team and is a proven NFL QB. Way more spanking done last year for “Pineapple McCown” and Johnny Football…both currently hanging on to their NFL hopes in Cleveland, and the Winston crowd who have annointed him the Bucs savior despite (1) not being on the team, and (2) not even taking a snap as an NFL QB (there is the chance he could suck…like Manziel). So be thankful Glennon is still here, he is still the best NFL quality QB on the roster (and very well could be after the draft)

  10. RayRay1 Says:

Look out for the old ” Chipster “. Philly’s two 1st. rounders this year + a 2nd. next year + Bradford for the # 1 this year.

  11. StPeteBucsFan Says:

I DO understand the lack of love for Napoleon Dynamite. He’s not the prettiest QB in the league. I simply do not understand all the haterade.

Why would we trade this guy for anything less than a great offer? Assuming we draft Fameis, MG8 is still a great insurance policy. Even JBF concedes he’s a solid backup QB. And so who out there presents a better option to back up Fameis? Somebody suggested Chase Daniels to me the other night. Honestly I haven’t seen enough of Daniels to get blown away. I have seen enough of MG8 to believe with the right OC..Koetter is PERFECT for MG8, that Napoleon can be a very competent NFL QB. A great backup for Fameis.

MG8 may be the smartest QB in the league. I’m going on scoreboard here not the BS that Winstonites try to manufacture about Fameis which usually includes made up “majors” and the fact that he was offered a football scholarship to Stanford. That offer simply means Fameis is not stupid, but not necessarily all that smart. Not suggesting he’s not smart enough to be a great NFL QB just pointing out he could carry Glennon’s book bag.

And so Glennon has quietly been at OBP working with Koetter on the new offense. He will be SOOOO ready in 30 days that he’ll have a big advantage.

Again for those who forget here’s an indication of just how bright MG8 is….

Glennon completed his academic tenure at NC State with two degrees: a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management and a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies, graduating on December 14, 2012. His GPA in the MALS program, which had an emphasis in leadership and sports management, was in the 3.8 range on a 4.0 scale.

  12. tmaxcon Says:

The only positive if Glennon take a regular season snap this year is Lovie will be gone. Raise your standards folks. stop making excuses for 8 and accept his fate. radio host

  13. Bucsfan4lyf Says:

Glennon is here to stay and start while Mariota learns the ropes, Winston bum ass is going to New York, where he can get all the fame and media when he starts throwing picks and blaming his teammates 😀

  14. Chef Paul Says:

Right on, StPete!! I agree with bucgator 100%

  15. BFFL Says:

I’ll take Glennon over Mr. Big booty chicken leg any day of the week

  16. ander Says:

I don’t know why everybody wants too trade glennon. The guy is a decent qb that can start till Jameis is ready. I mean I don’t know about you guys but I rather see glennon start week 1 than another washed up qb like Jason campbell.

  17. Chef Paul Says:

Trading Glennon also means putting ALL our eggs in one rookie basket. He’s a good back up and a decent back up plan if the rookie don’t work out. Tolerate him until we find someone better, as Rah would say.

  18. Strider #FamousJameis Says:

I’m sick of these old ass bears players it’s like schiano and his damn Rutgers

  19. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I still think the moment they sign a veteran it will pretty much make our pick obvious, and that is why they are waiting.

  20. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Maybe they want freeman back 😉

  21. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Strider

Take your point. But ya gotta at least concede at least we’ve moved up a notch unless you believe Rutgers has better talent than the Bears.

I’m sure there’s a Bears blog where fans might wish to say that. LMAO

“I’m sick of these old ass bears players it’s like schiano and his damn Rutgers”

I hate to break it to people, but all coaches bring in players from their past. It happens with EVERY coach. Get over it.

  23. LargoBuc Says:

I doubt OTA’s will have much influence regarding Mike Glennon being a starter. Although I said before that I only see Glennon starting this year if we a)trade down or b)draft Mariota. So I dont know what all this means. Maybe lack of a trading partner willing to give us what we want. Either way he’s better than Mccown so whatever role Glennon has on this team I support it.

  24. ruggyup Says:

Always the same caveat, “played for, knew, coached for, payed homage to Lovie in Chicago. BFD, get over it.

  25. ddneast Says:

Glennon has been in the league for two years, has a full season of games under his belt and is said to have good study habits and work ethic.
How long do you have to be in the league to be considered a veteran?
Still Joe wants to trade another player away for another worthless fifth round pick.
    Why?
Maybe so Joe can hound Lovie about calling Glennon the QB of the future.

  26. Buccfan37 Says:

Glennon still has a mob of fans right here at this site. Got the anti MG side also, whose minds go spastic at the mention of his name and why is’nt he already traded for a 2nd to 6th pick depending on the hate factor. MG’s mob is still going strong, many just want to see him actually play more.

  27. tickrdr Says:

    Random thoughts:
Lovie is “old school”, and as much as I may not like the results so far, perhaps he will be a man of his word. To wit:
Maybe Josh McCown signed here after being prom the starting gig by Lovie, and then in “old school” fashion — could not lose his job after an injury— and was therefore re-instated by Lovie even though clearly outplayed by Glennon. Finally at the end of the year, even poor Lovie could see there was little point in trying to win, and just tanked the rest of the season for the highest draft pick. Now, perhaps Glennon will finally get a legit shot as the #1 in training camp to progress enough to keep the rookie on the bench. A tough position to be in; since most fans will be screaming for their new toy after the first incompletion, let alone the first interception. Don’t believe me? Just look at the comments after St.Pete Buc Fan suggested the possibility of a 10 win season and a playoff berth with MG8 at the helm, which prompted many posters pointing out that his trade stock would rise, and they could then hand the reins over to their new plaything??? SMDH

MG8 played five games last year, minus the quarter in Atlanta.
In those five games, he averaged 257 yards a game! Now stay with me here ’cause the math may get tough for some. At least 250 yards a game—-
means 1000 yards in four games— which means 4000 yards in 16 games!
The same logic equals 29 TDs and 19 INTs for a full 16 game season.
Please look at the stats for 2014 regular season. That 257 yards per game would have been tenth in the league for last year. Remember, that was after only 18 games in the league. He couldn’t possibly improve with even more playing time—right??? Plus, “ol’ cement shoes” is even slower than JW5!!!

  28. LargoBuc Says:

Im not of the mindset that Glennon should be our starter this year but really, when Brian Hoyer was being lauded as some good mentor that our rookie QB can lean on, its not like he has that much more of a resume than Glennon, who we already have for much cheaper! I never got the Hoyer support from the writers but as far as a mentor type goes, Matt Schaub was just cut and has more of a resume than Hoyer and Glennon combined!

  29. Arealbucsfan Says:

Lets not act like Campbell is McCown. Campbell was doing very well with his season as a Raider. No he wont be the starter, but will be a great mentor

  30. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Clearly MG8 won’t be viewed as a mentor to Fameis. Even though MG8’s intellect, work ethic and two years in the league could provide Fameis with some great insights.

MG8 will view himself as competition for Fameis. And if the world is fair MG8 would get a chance to compete. He won’t of course. Whether it’s Fameis or MM Buc brass will feel enormous pressure to justify that #1 pick.

And so which would be better for Fameis/MM? A mentor or competition?
I love competition and feel mentoring at the NFL level is completley overrated.

You Winstonites who scoff at the idea of MG8 as “competition” don’t have to get excited! If MG8 is not competition Fameis will clearly prove it this fall.

While I”m ready to draft Fameis I’m not ready to anoint him starter. No trouble with making him earn the spot.

  31. Tom Edrington Says:

So if Glennon were gone and Winston dings that ankle again because he can’t escape an NFL speed rush, Campbell is your QB?????

    Wonderful……

  32. bucs4lyfe Says:

Lol if the rookie doesn’t work out? Some of you really are delusional. Matt moore or tebow could do what Glennon does lol it doesn’t matter anymore whether Glennon is a good or bad quarterback because no franchise will sit a guy they drafted first overall for a damn average to below average quarterback for very long…… People here are still dumb enough to think if our defense was elite that Glennon will lead us somewhere. MM OR JW are going to be the focus not Glennon damn you guys are so sad

  33. bee Says:

Glennon is the smartest QB in the league? LMAO…please. I don’t think he leaves the team, he’s a good backup. Nothing more. If he was more, he would’ve done it by now. And if you think he can beat out Jameis or Marcus in training camp, then you need to pass me that joint. Glennon is not good. He’s scared, inaccurate and immobile. It’s like do you some of you Glennon supporters watch the games or just the “highlights”. Why do you want a man to lead your team and he’s afraid to run for a first down when no one is in front of him? His own teammates don’t even vouch for him. Let him do what he does best… ride the bench and let his brother go on twitter rants.

  34. MadMax Says:

I hope we keep MG8. He will be an awesome backup and be our guy while Jameis gets up to speed. Dont get me wrong, I think Jameis can get at it after 2 or 3 games but I dont want to rush it.

I know we’re going to have another losing season, its a given. But things should start to improve a little at least. But O line had better be addressed soon, especially next draft!

    ——————–

We have the #1 pick… we don’t have to hide who we’re picking from anybody. 95% of the time, the #1 pick is signed, sealed, and delivered BEFORE the draft…why would we care?

  36. NonyaBucsiness Says:

    Right on StPete! Well said.

Glennon may not be the swiftest but he has shown when provided good protection, he can move the ball. Also, when your run game don’t work, it makes it even harder to pass. We didn’t run well last year.

Lets not forget, Glennon played in the same college system as Matt Ryan so Koetter should have an understanding of his skill set. I think, given strong coaching, Glennon could be very effective.

  37. Mike10 Says:

They should bring in someone that is like a coach, but for QBs and reserve that extra roster spot for someone that can actually play if needed

  38. Bucs fan in Chicago Says:

I don’t know why Joe likes Campbell so much! No way, Keep Glennon over Campbell anyday.

Joe never wrote that Joe likes Campbell. –Joe

  39. tgreg Says:

  40. AussieBucco Says:

@ James – ironic much? These pages are nothing but Winston jerk-off material.

  41. The original "Kevin" Says:

I dont think we are taking a qb with the first pick. There is nobody out there available better than glennon in fa and he had NEVER had a real OC. Being that his worst game last season was better than McCowns best speaks volumes. Lovie will trade back and get two premium pass rushers in the first round and all O line after that. Glennon will lead the bucs to the post season and silence the critics…

  42. No qb in 1st Says:

Really doesn’t matter wich qb we draft because Glennon will beat either for the starting job in training camp. Really believe glennon haters are going to be pleasantly surprised at what he can do with Koetter. MG8 will finally get to work with a real OC. Of course all this is moot if we can’t fix this Oline. To me the perfect scenario is
Trade 1st pick to Tennessee for their 1st and their 3rd
Then trade the #2 pick to Cleveland for their 2 1st rounders and their 2nd
Then we draft the 2 best OL’s then the best DE then QB(maybe petty or hundley)
Tell me what you think of this scenario

  43. bucs4lyfe Says:

Delusional lol you guys are a bunch of clowns, the excuses are endless for Glennon, is it because he’s white because it isn’t because of production

    The original “Kevin” Says:

I dont think we are taking a qb with the first pick. There is nobody out there available better than glennon in fa and he had NEVER had a real OC.
    ———————————————-
Never had a real oc lol is this the excuse now? Why is it josh Freeman threw for 4000 with that same coordinator the year before? Glennon is not the guy, he’s not better than Freeman and Glennon couldn’t stay on the field with josh mccown as his only competition, your a fool of you think Glennon is going to keep Winston or mariotta on the bench for long….. Dude is as average as they come, he defines the word average and trade bait best describes how useful he is to this team

  44. The original "Kevin" Says:

Glennon couldnt stay on the field even with Mccown to compete with…..

Do you really think mccown out performed glennon. If you do then you need your eyes checked. Its obvious lovie had an agenda to lose. Again I would not be suprised if they draft winston being the fan base wants him….or mariotta. But either way glennon is the best chance for the bucs to win in 2015. Lots of winston and mariotta supporters but also a lot of glennon believers as well.

Hey Joe, why dont you run a 24 hour poll on who fans would rather see start in 2015. Glennon, The duck, or the Nole……Id like to see the results just curious.

  45. Mr. T Says:

I for one want to see what Glennon can do with a real OC onboard now and hopefully here for at least a few years to provide some continuity and stability to the offense. McCown said that playing for many different OC’s in his career hurt him and I’m sure it certainly hasn’t helped MG8 either now having to get used to another new OC and system once again. We’ll see how this all plays out in the next several weeks, it should be interesting.

  46. Pickgrin Says:

LOL tickdr – your hope for and belief in Mike Glennon is something special man. Your thoughtful and well reasoned cases that you regularly lay out for MG8 – with stats to boot. Well done bro. But you are forgetting about that silly little thingy we call “he doesn’t pass the eyeball test”. Remember?

Dude we all watched the games. If Joe did a pole asking – “Based on what you have seen of Mike Glennon so far – are you confident that he can grow into the type of QB that can go to pro Bowls and lead his team to playoffs and Super Bowls? Yes/NO. Of course the answer would be 95% NO.

Can he improve and get better and be a functional starter in this league? Perhaps. He’s smart and he works really hard and he WANTS to be good – that goes a long way. Listen – when you see where Winston is at after his 2nd season in the league – you can look back to where Glennon is now and say – yea – big difference. We are about to get a stud QB. I like MG8. You like MG8. I’m pretty sure Lovie and Koetter like MG8. But he ain’t Jameis Winston. You will see the difference pretty quickly.

I’m glad to have Mike Glennon as our bridge/competition/mentor/ backup to Jameis Winston. I think he’s a solid back up QB and also that he’s going to make a great “mentor”. Mike is a pro and I think he will do all he can to help Winston be the best he can be. Jameis does not put on airs with his teammates – he will treat Mike with respect and Mike will help him develop and learn. Its a good situation to have Glennon as 2nd QB for this year and maybe next. he certainly comes at the right price.

And if Mike Glennon clearly outplays Winston in camp and pre-season – then God bless America and let that $5M rookie sit for awhile. If Mike Glennon can win the starting job AND keep it rolling for an entire season to keep Winston on the bench. That would really be something wouldn’t it? It would mean playoffs for sure. LOL sounds like an MGM wet dream…

  47. tickrdr Says:

    @Pickgrin:

As usual, a nice and fair response. We’ll just have to wait and see how it all plays out. I just think he deserves at least a legitimate shot, no more or no less. It also seems to me that there might be some reverse racism resulting in some of the haterade too. (No, not from you, but likely jilted Freemanites)

BTW, I am interested to know how well all of the JW5 supporters believe he will do in his rookie season. Last year there were so many Johnny Manziel fans, but no one even responded to my friendly wager to bet that he would do as well as MG8. I even offered the same bet for all of other QBs chosen last year, but not one taker, not even for some verbal jousting claiming they would better his stats.

  48. bucs4lyfe Says:

Lol you think lovie had an agenda to lose you really are delusional. Glennon first game was against the steelers and he played a good game. Amt rookie can play a good game or play not to lose like Glennon, he’ll never be the reason we win or the reason we lose, he’s just a piece of the puzzle and your really just blaming lovie because you don’t want to admit Glennon lost the starting job. Nice arm, OK accuracy, zero heart and not enough charisma to be a leader of men, Glennon is probably exactly why the bucs don’t like mariotta personality

  49. Barry Bryan Joel all agree Says:

#MG8 is a true professional. Should be a full time Starter.

    #DP #HGH #PEDs #MushBrainRetard

  50. tickrdr Says:

    Freeman 2013 = 3 games with all starters = 34 points = 11.3 ppg
    Glennon 2013 = 13 games with VJax plus? = 254 points = 19.5 ppg

    McCown 2014 = 10.5 games = 158 points = 15 ppg
    Glennon 2014 = 5.5 games = 112 points = 20.4 ppg

    tickrdr

BTW, Freeman’s 5th season, if I remember correctly.
How many seasons for McCown? 13 + 5.5 games for Glennon = 18.5 games.

Again my question to you all—- how many TDs vs INTs for Jameis Winston?

People need to stop the non sense that we are gonna sign someone before the draft.
