Winston Experiencing Weak Wing

February 20th, 2015

For the second straight day, Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston has been having longer than needed “medicals” at the NFL Scouting Combine in frozen Indianapolis. Per Chris Mortensen of BSPN, Winston is experiencing weakness in his throwing shoulder.

Joe just spoke with Winston’s quarterback coach, George Whitfield, who expressed surprise at Mortensen’s report.

“If that is the report, that is the report,” Whitfield told Joe. “I don’t know. We haven’t experienced anything with his throwing in San Diego.

“I have no idea. He hasn’t experenced any injury. He expressed no injury to us. He has been fine. He has done all the lifts. He has done all the throwing. In fact, we had to pull him back on some things becsu he wants to go so hard.

“That thing could mean any number of things. It could be from baseball. The elongated motion with pitching. And it could be something innocuous.”

To Joe, this could be very, very serious. It almost smells like Winston’s shoulder was screwed up learning new mechanics, you know, like might happen to a baseball pitcher, which Winston also is.

  3. LOYALbucsfan Says:

joe must be crushed. Maybe we can focus on some of the other players in the combine now.

  4. Justin Says:

uh oh, the cracks are already starting to show in your boyyyy.

  5. Skyline Crew Says:

Soft and Fragile, don’t need a weakling on our team. Draft Mariota.

    MARIOTA!!!!!!!!!

  9. Barry Says:

This guy was never a serious contender anyways as far as the Bucs/Glazers were concerned. IMO.

  10. MTBuc Says:

Can’t wait till all this crap is over.

  11. bucrightoff Says:

He was never really in consideration for #1, but any physical concerns make it a lock he’s out. It’s gonna be between the Mariota mob against the Williams crew for the #1 pick.

  12. voice of reason Says:

i used to be pre-med and i know that the shoveling food motion can be hard on the shoulder. shaun king could probably give some insight.

  13. kaput Says:

Whitfield said he’s been getting stronger and stronger.

I have doubts about the report, at this point.

  14. Barry Says:

Hey, if he has a sore shoulder then he can’t go head to head with Mariota. Right?

  15. kaput Says:

“He was never really in consideration for #1”

Maybe one of the dumbest posts I’ve read on this site in a while, and that says something.

  16. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

Stall tactic? Who knows, but it certainly doesn’t help Winston’s case for #1 if there is an injury. Should be an interesting next few months

  17. Jeagan1999 Says:

Could just be muscle soreness, but it could also be much more. Not a great time for Winston to be experiencing medical issues. Maybe he just doesn’t want to throw at the combine and is too afraid to say it! Any way you look at it, not a good sign for a guy that wants to be the first overall selection in the Draft!

  18. LOYALbucsfan Says:

glennon and williams start 1st game

  19. mark Says:

As I said before, the draft is a long ways away. Some players move up, some move down.

Right now Jamis has only one direction to go. DOWN.

  20. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Speaking for Pablo

“Now Pablo is not accusing Winston of this…..but when Pablo is in one of his really, really good behavior modes, Pablo ma$terbates excessivly….and Pablo has injured his shoulder in the process. Pablo thinks Warren Sapp would be better off with a sore shoulder and a job…..than disgraced and out of work”.

  21. JFat Says:

Bummer. Guess that’s a definite that he won’t throw tomorrow. Could be serious, could be nothing, could be that karma is a bitch.

Smoke is not your friend this time of year. Lovie was never even thinking of Crab Legs over Jesus Lovin Mariota. Not even a consideration. Remember when they were definitely taking Manziel last year? Yeah, he was never considered either. Welcome to the draft rookie.

  23. Robert 9 Says:

where all the lovers defending him????

  24. BP52 Says:

I’ sure the FSU people will just blame it on his bad ankle or his recievers dropping the ball

  25. BP52 Says:

    * I’m* ^^

  26. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Putting two & two together…..perhaps there is more to the previous article about Fowler not wanting to play for the Bucs…..maybe Winston is faking injury to avoid being picked by the Bucs…..(being sarcastic)

  27. Posey99 Says:

I wonder if that 87 guy will still take that jersey bet.

  28. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

What is there to defend Robert 9? He has a sore shoulder.

God you people are freaking insane

  29. mark2001 Says:

Remains to be seen if and how serious it is…another yellow flag at this point. But for his trainer to say “he is getting stronger and stronger” is meaningless…what would you expect him to say?

  30. Robert 9 Says:

nothing more than a built in excuse for tomorrow if he does throw and look like $hit.

and if he does well he’ll be painted a hero.

unless your in his camp, you see this clearly for what it is.

I faked a back injury once, this is the same thing. him faking for positioning.

add perpetual liar to the concern list.

he’ll be luck to get picked in the 1st round. this sux for the bucs, cause his trade/the 1st pick value takes a huge hit with this.

and for someone to say he’s doing it so he does not have to play for the bucs is crazy. going from the 1st to the ???? pick and losing how much money?

  31. mark2001 Says:

As a result of the kind of test, it may be nerve related. The point is that it isn’t a “sore shoulder”….may be next to nothing or much more….but for us to speculate on how this will effect his future or draft position is in fact, stupid.

  32. mikeh Says:

oh! no! 87 your superman? lol!

  33. Robert 9 Says:

you have a sore shoulder on the most important day of your career?

    LOL

    ok then.

I have a bridge for sale!

  34. mark2001 Says:

Robert…come on….I’m leaning towards Mariota, but to say he is faking something is BS. He didn’t complain about the shoulder…it was discovered in an extensive medical exam and medical testing…..these tests aren’t “complain” or “doctor I feel” kind of tests. His actions in the past have some sketchy points, but to accuse him of tanking something like this is plain crazy.

  35. 87ForWinstonNOMariota Says:

Look at these fools once again.

I can name Mariota’s NUMEROUS times that he’s been injured in college. NOT a peep out of any of you.

  36. mikeh Says:

mark2001 …Robert is more concerned for all the “white” women in Tampa and also thinks Winston should have stolen fried chicken and collard greens, instead of crab legs.

So pay no attention to the house racist.

  39. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Robert 9

I disagree that it would hurt our trade value….if this is something more serious with Winston (and I hope it’s not)…..but if Winston is off many boards, it make Mariota even more valuable….and we have the pick….

  40. JTHV Says:

Lol @ all you Winston hating clowns!!!

Per Ian Rapport, Winston was checked and cleared by doctors.

Per NFLN, Winston to speak to media in an hour.

Per me, you Winston haters are hysterical!!!

You do realize that Mariota is a string bean compared to Winston right?

    What a jack***.

  42. HawaiianBuc Says:

I’m shocked to see the same fools jumping all over this with complete joy. I feel sorry that you can have so much hate for someone you’ve never met. I can only imagine how hateful you must be to people that you actually have met and don’t like.

When you are at the combine, they will pull you for a broken fingernail. These guys are coached by their agents to not do anything if you aren’t feeling 100%. I’m not saying I like it or it’s right, but that’s the job of an agent. If a player won’t listen to his agent, then he shouldn’t hire one. The reports are saying this is extremely minor, but I guarantee you he is being heavily advised on what to do. They all are, especially those in the top of the draft.

And for those saying it’s a built in excuse, give me a break. I won’t care if he sets the combine on fire, nor will I care if he does poorly. I don’t know how many times you have to see players excel at the combine that don’t amount to sh!t in the NFL, and vice versa.

This whole draft argument is completely comical at this point. The same people (myself included) saying the same things over and over and over. People who want Mariota jump for joy when they can find anything negative about Winston. Pro-Winston people aren’t that much better. Reality is, 99% of people’s minds are made up one way or the other. It won’t matter if Winston solves world hunger and defeats ISIS, there are going to be people against him and hoping for him to fail. It’s really pretty sad.

  43. chris k Says:

Jeez! What is this? Red flag #20? It’s such an easy pick. Everything else is just hype talk leading up to the draft. Mariota is the pick! Lets start talking 2nd round and on going forward.

I swear…seems like we have a board full of couch potatoes that have never had a battery of medical tests…..much of it is electro-chemical, imaging, radiological, etc… It has nothing to do what “what you say”…give the guy a break.

  59. Skyline Crew Says:

    From ESPN:

“Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston has undergone specific testing to determine why he is showing weakness in his throwing shoulder that was discovered during the NFL combine medical exams, according to team and league sources.”

“Sources said Winston had electromyography to study a weakness in his shoulder that often can be caused by a nerve problem and can be treated through therapy, if necessary.

No other specifics were provided by the sources. Winston is scheduled to speak to the media Friday afternoon after his planned session Thursday was postponed for medical testing at a nearby hospital, a source said.”

  60. HawaiianBuc Says:

    @Barry,

So Winston is going to be interviewed within the hour. Kind of blows your stupid theory out the room, doesn’t it?

I’m not sure if many of you even realize, but Mariota has a bum shoulder too. It’s probably a more serious injury than Winston.

If Winston was your client and he had a bit of a sore shoulder, would you want him to throw? I probably wouldn’t want him to throw at the combine if he was 100%. The opinions of a bunch of jack arse fans that hate him anyway wouldn’t mean a damn thing to me. So you guys can all dance for joy and have your worthless theories as to why, but you are completely irrelevant.

  61. Nybucsfan Says:

How many red flags do the hunting ground fans need? 87 Mariota is 8 or 9 pounds less and they said Jameis looked flabby and had 20% body fat that’s a lot. Let’s move on

  62. mikeh Says:

@87 your the fool! this kid should stick with baseball. and you should go f**k your fist. jack*ff

mikeh – normally I dislike your vitriolic comments. But I’ve got to give it to you dude – that was pretty funny.

  64. Robert 9 Says:

how do they determine he is showing weakness?

did they test his shoulder strength last week? I think not.

    it’s call “ouch, that hurts”…….lol

nerve damage, the only nerve damage is in the people’s brains buying this BS.

    pick mariota or trade down.

  65. Robert 9 Says:

if he does good tomorrow he’ll be called a hero who works through pain. if he blows he has a built in excuse.

if you guys think a smart GM or coach is buying this…..lol

this will hurt his already sinking draft position

  66. JFat Says:

@Hawaiian — Gotta assume Mariota would get the same advice and wouldn’t throw tomorrow if his shoulder was still hurt. Or does he not get “pro style” advice either?

I’ve had the test Jameis had today for shoulder weakness and it wound up being bursitis. Can get that from something as simple as the position he sleeps in.

  67. mikeh Says:

@pickgrin- hey I don’t hate jw. personally I really don’t think either is worth the pick. jmo.

  68. HawaiianBuc Says:

    @JFat,

Mariota hurt his shoulder against Ohio State. I would assume (and hope for his sake) he is 100% by now. If he’s not 100%, he needs a new agent.

  69. HawaiianBuc Says:

    @Robert 9,

If you actually listened to facts instead of speculating, you would already know that Jameis didn’t say anything. One particular doctor saw something. It has been determined that it is incredibly minor, not even needing treatment. But nice try though.

  70. Bert Says:

After reading the comments from the regular jameis haters it’s become obvious that these JoeBucsFans internet bada$$e$ are the individuals who have real “character issues.” You guys come off as teenagers who are trying to look cool in front of your peers. It’s funny that Mariota is supposedly a Jesus type of guy with a high quality of character and many people want him for that very reason, yet the mariota mob seems to have some of the lowest character qualities I’ve ever seen on this site. Based on how bad Barry, Mr Patrick, Supersam, robert9 and others attack Jameis’s character it would seem that they should actually want jameis because if his character is as bad as they say it be a perfect match for them as they have displayed their immaturity in their daily attacks every single day seems like a match made in heaven.

  71. Skyline Crew Says:

I don’t think Mariota or Winston should throw at the combine. It doesn’t do anything for either of them. Plus they will both be throwing at their pro days.

  72. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    ——————————————————————-

Its pretty hard to tell that from your comments. Perhaps you just like to sadistically toy with Winston lovers.

Can’t say I agree with you either. I think both are worth the pick – especially when you need QB talent as much as the Bucs do. Both these guys are going to be pretty good if not very good NFL QBs IMO.

  76. Skyline Crew Says:

Mariota is more accurate, faster, extends plays better, has a better release, and has the better stats.

What’s the difference between Manuel, Weinke, Ponder, & Winston?

We aren’t trading back with the Eagles. Even if we did, what you are asking for is way to much and no team would ever do that.

  77. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

Bert I want Mariota over Jameis……because I believe he’ll be a much, much better NFL QB over the span of both their careers…much better…however I am a charter member of the trade down crowd….neither Jameis or Mariota are worthy of the #1 overall

  78. LUVMYBUCS Says:

There’s so many QB’s that have been great for the spread/read option –

    Timmy Chang
    Colt Brennan
    David Carr
    Moses Moreno
    Kellen Moore
    Ryan Dinwiddie
    Jared Zabransky

    *Colin Kaepernick

Good Prospects no doubt. But If you’ve watched any of the West Coast Offensive Guru’ over the past few years.

    Outside of Tedford/Chris Ault/Chip Kelly

    • Noel Mazzone
    • Chris Petersen
    • Mark Helfrich (Wanted him to be our QB coach-A few years back)
    • Steve Sarkisian
    • Mike Leach

You sell a lot of bubble screens, tunnel screens and come back routes. And you’ll notice they’ll run, the hurry up offensive from the Pistol Formation. You’ll quickly notice that–If you don’t have a ready made system for them, their QB’s just doesn’t translate well to the league.

  79. Skyline Crew Says:

I will say this, whichever QB they draft they had better utilize them correctly and to their strengths. None of this BS stuff of trying to make a QB do something they haven’t done before.

  80. Skyline Crew Says:

    @Luv

    That is bad coaching.

  81. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Skyline Crew

True..Its terrible coaching. If you watched Alex Smith when he played for the Utes. You couldn’t walk away think WOW-this kid is a freaking world. He struggled until Jim Harbaugh installed spread/read option in San Fran.

Then when he hit KC—Andy Reid a WC guru-said let me Hire Chris Ault. Install that same system, and keep this ball rolling. That’s being flexible–that’s good coaching

  82. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    *Freaking ALL WORLD

  83. mikeh Says:

@pikgrin- yes I dish it out just like the Winston lovers and yes we need a QB and If they don’t trade at the draft for a QB that has already been playing in the NFL then I hope it is mariota. jw has bad news written all over him and did you listen to him talk? he is educated wow!!!

  84. Skyline Crew Says:

Yes, that is why I said if we do draft Mariota we have to have a spread style offense here to slowly ease Mariota in. Why wouldn’t you want to play to his strengths. If we truly want a Seattle offense then go get Mariota. If you want to continue to just throw from the pocket with nothing else expected from the QB then go get Winston. I like Seattle’s offense. I also think Mariota can run GB’s offense as well.

  85. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Skyline Crew

You just can’t go, hire some a guy off the streets to run Chips system though. Scott Frost is still trying to figure out all of its little nuances.

  86. Skyline Crew Says:

I said Seattle’s offense and GB’s offense and you bring up Chips system. Why can it only be Chip’s system? He would do fine up in Seattle running their offense. However, they already have a QB running it.

  87. White Tiger Says:

Decided not to read the comments before posting this – because I’ve clearly noted that I am a Mariota fan – I will freely admit Kid Fameis played a competitive position at a high level, for a college team that has been very competitive as their starting QB – as proof Kid Fameis has obvious talent.

I just don’t think he’s the best candidate here.

…but just the very limited, novice-level, study of the public video clips of Kid Fameis’ pass plays this year, I noted there was something odd about his passes. They seemed to drop really quick, the ball almost looked heavy after it left his hand. While we all have access to it, I don’t buy coaches film, and don’t pretend to be anything more than a novice with possibly a bit more initiative than most – what I saw made me look at and compare it to the way he threw the ball in a few games from 2013…and it’s definitely different. Not sure what the issue is, or when it started, but the way he threw the ball in the last few games of 2014 looks different than last year.

May be nothing, may be the reason why he was hoping not to throw at the combine…I think @joe correctly notes that it is a concern (at least as much as we know right now – he or his agent may have been forthright about this issue and just didn’t announce it to the public…but if not…it’s a huge issue on two fronts 1) there is a previously unknown/undiclosed problem 2) he and his agent hid behind Mariota’s decision not to throw…

Maybe it’s a reason Kid Fameis had so many more INT’s than 2013?

  88. White Tiger Says:

Wonder why it is that ALL the teams that drafted one of the elite spread QB’s – did so right out of the gate?!

why is it…that guys like Colin Kaepernick, Cam Newton and Russell Wilson, all had instant success in the NFL? It didn’t take years of building a spread team: assembling JUST the right talent for the offensive line, finding the right WR’s…and that one cut RB…?

It’s mostly for the same reasons that it has become the dominant offense in college, the beauty of the spread is that it really doesn’t require a specific type of talent, sure they’d prefer the traditional “skill positions” to be mobile, but really they just need them to et in the way of the defensive linemen long enough to spring the play. You don’t have to have 350 lb tackles that run a 4.5 forty …you just need a 290 lb quick twitch-type guy …the ability to execute and sell the scheme is key, because the scheme does the work. The zone blocking scheme is already utilized by NFL teams, and it matches well with some versions of the WCO. Which is probably why heavy WCO-based teams are able to adapt and fit spread-option concepts into their playbook. Since the majority of the incoming talent are very experienced with the spread, maybe they figure that combination (WCO/spread-option) will ramp up the learning process and get more the top draftees onto the field quicker?

It’s clear, the spread has taken over college football, some teams have decided not it may be wiser to change the system to fit the talent, rather than the time it would take teaching the talent the system…

What makes this relevant is that, as I understand it, much of the spread offenses at the collegiate level use a visual system of communication. The sideline “sends” a play in either by hand signals (or, as in the case of Oregon, someone holds up a poster with a group of 4 pictures)…either the QB signals the play by signal, or the o-line, WR’s and RB’s look to the sideline as he/they approach(es) the line of scrimmage – sometimes operating more like a point guard bringing the ball up the court..

…they have to transition from a visual system, to one in which the QB has to commands the huddle after every play, calls a new play, reads the defense, and possibly calling an audible. These kids who have never gone into a huddle in college, suddenly have to re-learn to process verbally. Unlike years ago when colleges ran offenses similar to the NFL, these new college players struggle with 1) learning the verbiage and 2) processing what they hear.

I’ve heard a former GM say that you can sometimes see a lineman hesitate after the ball is snapped…and that hesitation is due to the fact that instead of intuitively reacting to the called play…he’s processing what he heard. They say it’s not always a big deal, after a year or two they adapt. Sometimes, when there’s an epic failure, it’s because the player can’t make that transition – while struggling with the speed of the NFL.
