Tampa-2 Not Totally Extinct
February 18th, 2015Joe still has loads and loads of untouched interviews, and a couple he hasn’t finished transcribing, from his days in Phoenix during Super Bowl Week.
Today, Joe is in frigid Indianapolis at the NFL Scuting Combine. For media purposes, the combine begins today and lasts through Saturday. So Joe will have tons more strong content for weeks.
At any rate, Joe revisits his interview with NFL.com’s Gregg Rosenthal. Among the questions Joe asked, ‘Was Chucky correct or not when he said the Tampa-2 defense is a relic?
“No one uses it 100 percent of the time anyway,” Rosenthal said. “First of all, [early in the 2014 season, Lovie Smith] had personnel that didn’t really fit it so that’s why he got rid of some of the players. I think when you look at what [Lovie] does on a game-to-game basis, it wasn’t like what Lovie and Tony Dungy were doing 15 years ago.
“Gruden is right. For the most part, teams are not as predictable. You can’t be as predictable. You just can’t leave your safeties back like that. [Defensive coaches] mix it up a lot more than they used to.”
That’s sort of what Lovie did in Chicago, and continues today. If a down-and-distance calls for a Tampa-2 defense, Lovie will break it out. Otherwise, he deviates somewhat.
Chucky is correct that the game has evolved. Offenses more often than not have been able to adjust and flaunt the weaknesses in the Tampa-2. That doesn’t mean is is totally dead.

i agree the tampa 2 is not dead but Lovies version of the tampa 2 is DEAD…. You can’t play NOT to loose games. You have to play to WIN… Lovie plays not to lose it will never work with new rules. Lovies firm belief that points don’t matter and football starts in November will keep the bucs in the top 5 of the draft for years to come. Lovie must go….

If Tampa 2 is dead, come up with Tampa 3

T2 is still effective as long as the defense can’t count on you running it 100% of the time. the bucs would get some big plays from time to time by starting in a cover 2 look and then doing something different after the snap. i think even simeon rice picked off a couple passes this way back in the day.
