NFL Players Like Winston Arrogance

February 25th, 2015

jameis 1121FOX Sports senior NFL writer and Joe’s friend Pete Schrager admits he left Jameis Winston’s news conference last week “rolling my eyes.”

Schrager was annoyed by Winston’s cocky attitude, as if Winston already had been crowned King Jameis. So Schrager reached out to NFL players to see if they were equally disgusted.

They were not. Per Schrager; the Winston way was adored.

“This guy thinks he’s going to play in Super Bowls against Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. Is he delusional? Maybe,” Schrager said in a FOX podcast. “He believes it. He believes it. So, you know, as a person, if you worked with a guy like this and he was in the next cubicle over, you’d be like, ‘I can’t stand this guy.’ He’s an arrogant, unbelievable thing.

“But he’s not working in a cubicle. He’s a football player. And football players need to have confidence. They need to believe they can overcome adversity. And when you ask guys around the league, which I was doing, thinking that some of them would be like, ‘Yeah, right. I agree [Winston’s overly cocky].’ No, all of them [said], ‘Loved it. That was charismatic. He’s got swag. That’s what I want in a leader. I don’t want the softspoken type. I want a guy who’s going to grab a 10-year veteran who plays left guard, scream in his face and say, Let’s go.’ And that is a character-personality trait of Jameis Winston.”

So there you have it. NFL players want a boisterious, emotional leader.

Joe’s not surprised.

Michael Irvin was saying that during the combine but then again, that’s the type he was. Also Aikman was known to get on players/pump them up etc.

Barry, I’m accusing you of stealing my car. Doesn’t matter that you didn’t, the investigation will prove you didn’t and any judge/arbitrator will rule the same. For the rest of my days I will tell anyone I meet that I have accused you of stealing my car. Fair?

Just because he says he wants to be mentioned with the tom Brady and Payton he has a cocky attitude. If he said he is better than them yeah that comes off as cocky but wanting to be next to the bests in the game this guy sounds foolish

  15. knuckledragger Says:

Huge difference between cockiness and confidence
Confidence is when you know youre good.
Cockiness is when you need others to know it.

  16. phreakybucfan Says:

The #1 goal of each team each year is to win the Super Bowl. How dare Jameis Winston verbalize his confidence in his ability to contribute to a team’s success in achieving that goal. So immature.

  17. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

I think too many people try to compare their career with the NFL. It’s not the same thing.

And there’s something to be said for that positive attitude, believing that you will succeed. There was nothing disrespectful. He wants to be great.

Again, this is about people who already don’t like him, who will look for any way to further not like him.

  18. WyldKat Says:

It sure sounds better than, “I’m going to get us to 6-10 and maybe save Lovie’s job”.

  19. Nick Says:

  20. Eric Says:

Fisher said that Winston’s study habits are particularly impressive.

“Every night, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, we get off the practice field, he eats his dinner at 6:45, and then he’s up here in the offices until 9:30, 10, 10:30 at night,” Fisher said. “He would sit and watch every practice tape and then prepare for red zone, third down, whatever it might be. A lot of guys are very talented but he likes to understand the game.”

Looks like it is no accident that he is the smartest QB since Manning….

  21. Chef Paul Says:

See? This is just another plus to Winston. I don’t know about you guys, but I friggin hate Cam Newton, and a lot of that has to do with his attitude. So if we draft him, we’ll have a Qb that the rest of our division will hate!!! If a panther fan hates our qb as much as we hate theirs, life will be good.

  22. Whocares92 Says:

You guys remember when Barry stole that guy’s car?

  23. Tiny Tim Says:

Hey we already have a leader that Robert 9 and Barry can be proud of in Gerald McCoy who goes on national TV/Radio and say Suh is better than him. Regardless if that is the case or not just gives a little insight into that locker room’s attitude. We need Winston that tells his team before the game that “we ain’t leaving here without a W”. Then they go out and trounce Clemson by giving them one of the worst home losses in school history. Why was Jameis so confident? His answer “Because at Florida state, if we gonna do it, we gonna do it big then.” I’ll take that attitude over Suh is better and that is not to knock GMC as a player. I am talking about mentality.

  26. Eric Says:

If I remember right Chucky was a little self assured.

The man just stated his goals. Wants to win the Super Bowl, and compete against the best like Manning.

    I say bravo young man.

  28. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

A lot of people talk about all the talent on the FSU team, and I agree.

The thing, it was already filled with 4 and 5* players before Jameis took over. The difference was at QB. If you look at how that team performed with EJ Manuel, and then the way they responded to Jameis, it shows, not just what a great passer can do, but what a great leader can do to transform a group of talented players to a team of winners.

show me a guy that thinks glennon or mccown inspired hope of pulling out a victory and i’ll show you a guy who thinks the bucs should trade down and keep average talent at the most important position and a guy who thinks we should trade down to get more talent that could end up being just as average. you gonna give your first second and third round pick this year and next year i’d think about it and still i’d pick a quarterback

  40. Skyline Crew Says:

Evans said he wanted to play with Mariota. A coach that he knows said so.

  41. Luther Says:

I’d rather have a guy that says he wants to be compared to Brady and Manning that a guy flashing money signs on one play. Winston’s work ethic matches his words. Can’t knock a man that works to back up his talk instead of partying like he’s already made it.

Your statement to him is what I said to him a long time ago. He doesn’t but it may not be his fault. I suspect he is a little slow and can’t think critically!

  49. Fishfries Says:

Negative people don’t like confident or slightly arrogant men or women. That’s facts! Especially when they’re black.

  50. sandogbuc Says:

Why are the Bucs blowing smoke with the 1st pick?

I am seriously asking because other than trading down why would L&L being blowing smoke?

    1. It’s highly doubtful the Bucs want to trade down with a clear need for a QB

    2. Lovie unprovoked starts off the combine and declares that so far nothing they have found takes Winston takes him off their draft board and can see him as the face of the franchise. And then goes on to praise his leadership and throwing abilities as a QB

    3. Licht sits down with Peter King and while discussing Mariota, changes the subject to Winston and pulls out a play from his phone, again praising Winston. And in another interview also mentions face of the franchise.

    4. All the talk we have seen from L&L on Mariota says he is a great kid and athlete but always stops short of saying he could be the face of the franchise.

    5. An overwhelming amount of chatter from behind closed doors at the combine all point to the Bucs drafting Winston.

I could go on but the point is everything heavily points to Winston, yet the Mariota supporters say it’s just Lovie and Licht blowing smoke and point to the Greg Bedard article on MMQB, Charles Davis (who admitted on Path to the Draft he could switch), Bill Polian on ESPN, Pat Kirwan on Sirus (who just changed to Winston) and Chris Landry who buries his info behind a pay wall.

My question is why are they right and everyone else is wrong?

  53. BucFan20 Says:

Winston could not have performed behind that line last season. Nor would another NFL QB. The defense gave away games people will claim Winston would have made a comeback and won BS. Even when Glennon or McCown put the team back in striking distance with the 1st down some idiot like Dotson, Mankins or EDS would draw the flag and put them back in long yardage again. Time after time. Winston will not solve the problems this team has now.

    —————————————-

I didn’t know that the article stated that Schraeger only asked current black football players if they had a problem with Winston’s confidence. I thought he said “And when you ask guys around the league, which I was doing,…….” That sounds like he asked players of all races. Not sure how someone can see a racial bias there unless you yourself was a racist first. If that is the case, then it makes sense why Winston is viewed as the anti-christ to some.

  59. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

Can we dispel the notion that all Winston supporters liked Manziel?

I have always thought Manziel’s size and style of play will get him killed. Additionally, he freelanced far more than any NFL OC wants. Who wants to spend the week sleeping on the office couch creating a game plan for Manziel to go through one read then start running around playing sandlot? He’s a great improviser, but to a detriment.

Plus, it sounds like Manziel didn’t study. Winston’s football IQ is high because he puts the time in. Completely different players.

  60. Eric Says:

    @Robert9

Jameis is too smart to get hurt.

Don’t you know the scouts say he is the smartest QB since Manning?

    Highest QB grade since Luck.

Go Jaboo. Keep proving them all wrong, like at the combine…….

  61. Skyline Crew Says:

It’s very likely that Manziel turns out to be a bigger bust than Leaf.

it’s called class. some of us don’t like people with no class, no matter what the color. and I am a highly positive person, but also have strong opinions. a lot different than being negative. I did not bust on johnny football last year, cause he was a joke and had zero chance of getting picked by the bucs IMO. Winston has a very good chance, so I actually have an opinion on the matter

Thanks for point that out BucFan20. All Bucs fan are completely unaware that the o-line sucked last year. However I do have a question, with 6 draft picks after the first one and a boatload of money to spend in free agency do you think there is a chance that L&L might address that issue!

  65. 87ForWinstonNOMariota Says:

Tis what I said last night.

All? All Bucs fans are unaware that the o-line sucked last year?

All of us? Stevie Wonder could see that.

  70. Eric Says:

Id say they got it extremely right with their first round selection last year.

Who is also a very, very confident player.

Which, I have never heard one buc fan complain about.

  71. Todd Kiper Says:

I really do think confidence is more accurate description than arrogance. As Jimbo Fisher alluded to in the NFL interview, the thing that makes his teammates and anyone else who interacts with him like him so much, is the fact that he doesn’t put himself on a pedestal….he’s “just one of the guys”

  72. Eric Says:

Also true not many got all riled up when Mike Evans, after being drafted by the bucs, got in a fight in that Miami nightclub, and threw a punch at the bouncer – jumped over a car, etc.

    Seemed kind of immature.

Went on to have a great rookie season.

  73. SuperSam Says:

Depends. That may work at first with some of the younger guys, but he will lose the locker room quickly if the wins don’t come FAST! That only works if your winning, if your losing, then it just becomes an annoyance. I also believe players will follow a quiet leader, ive never seen Russell Wilson yell at anyone.

  74. Nybucsfan Says:

Confident is one thing. Making stupid predictions puts a target on your back.

  75. BucFan20 Says:

    @ Eric.
    Nobody is talking about Evans
The topic is the line and other holes.

  76. Eric Says:

He did not make a prediction. He says he wants to win the super bowl and compete with Manning.

He did not predict he would do so.

    Its a goal.

  77. Kyle Says:

There’s no doubt a vocal leader is better than a quiet “leads by example” one. As another poster said, this type of leadership will work when winning, but the kid will have to learn when to dial it back too, something he hasn’t really shown but is probably capable of.

It’s mind boggling to me how someone who is apparently incredibly smart could do all the stupid things he’s done. He was a top recruit out of high school and with that arrogance, I’m sure he thought he’d be a top draft pick set to make millions. So how do you risk all that time after time?

Hopefully he’s done with that sh*t, but I wouldn’t bet money on it.

  78. SuperSam Says:

I also still believe that the leaders on this team will have a say so on who gets drafted, Gerald McCoy will have to agree to have this guy on “HIS” team, I remember an interview when they asked him about Richie Incognito joining the team, and he said ” This is my team, and he wont be doing those things here”.

  79. Tiny Tim Says:

    @ Robert Says:

it’s called class. some of us don’t like people with no class, no matter what the color.

    —————-

Thats the problem. Your definition of class is not the end all be all of what class mean. I am sure there are people out there that would feel your definition of class rivals Rosanne Barr. Instead of embracing the individuality of a person, you shun them because they do not conform to your tunnel visioned sheltered thought process of how someone should act in order to appease your ego or deficiencies. This society would be a better place and less judgemental if we could simply understand there is more than one way to skin a cat.

  83. Tiny Tim Says:

Mccoy does not have a say who joins the bucs. He was asked would he have a problem with Incognito. He said he does not make those decisions, but if he is signed, I will let him know this is my team and I won’t tolerate some of that stuff. Mccoy has no say so in who the bucs pick. Next you will say the cook will have a say because he does not like cooking crab legs. lol

  84. barryjo Says:

Why do all you Winston haters keep talking about the rape charges. three different times he was not found guilty. Could it be that the BIMBO who agreed to go to his apartment is looking to make some money. Why didn’t she file charges until she found out he was on the football team? She claimed she was drugged but the toxology report found no drugs in her system. After the alledged rape she gets on his motorcycle and they drive away together. Who gets rapped and does that. There must have been reasons why he was not charged. The other stupid and mature things he did..yes, immature..But if you look at some of the frat brother’s at FSU, I bet Winston would look like a saint. I think she has lied about the rape charge and is only waiting for him to sign his contract before she takes him to court for her big pay day. Give the guy a break..He’s learned his lesson the hard way, and will probably will lead the Bucs to a Super bowl in a year or two.

I also saw this though earlier.

Jameis Winston, QB, rSo, Florida State, 6-4, 232, 4.86 40 yard

He did run a 4.67 as a senior in high school….I’m pretty sure of that.

  91. Robert 9 Says:

so, by the time he is 30 he should be running about a 7.7 40?

  92. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    @Supersam

    Here’s the McCoy quote:

“I don’t make the decisions. I leave that to the guys upstairs,” defensive tackle Gerald McCoy said. “But as far as I’m concerned, as long as he can help the team, I’m all for it. I played against him a couple times, he’s a good player, a Pro Bowl guy, a vet. And I think he can help.”

Besides perhaps a franchise QB like Brady, please post documentation of ANY player ever getting asked about their opinion by a front office, especially, a defensive player on a QB.

Otherwise, you have no proof whatsoever. If you want to believe that in your mind, fine, but, don’t expect anyone else to go along with it.

Your continuous off base post never cease to amaze me. I wonder if the bucs asked double nickle if it was okay not to resign one of his best friends and roommate Warren Sapp. My guess is they did not because if they had, Sapp would have never played for Oakland. Players are paid to play and not make personnel decisions. You are just too funny bro.

  96. Daniel Says:

Please stop comparing Winston to Manziel, Johnny was a douche and broke so many NCAA rules; didn’t even respect his parents. What NCAA rules did Winston break, he was never even charged with rape so chill, and he was a young kid having fun with that other bs.

Also Manziel had terrible mechanics, was undersized, and doesn’t have half the football IQ Winston has. Manziel was the 3rd or 4th prospect last year in a weak QB draft class. Winston is apparently the pack leader in an impressive draft class.

Jameis may sound arrogant and ignorant to walking- stiff-first-class-flying executives but he’s a pack leader of a group of mean dogs. I too am looking forward to gettin our swag back.

I think he understood that. It was a moment of him being 19 years old and making a critical mistake. But I think those mistakes are very easily corrected. Character issues are different, and I don’t think he has those.” – Jimbo Fisher

Sorry Winston compared himself to proven winners in this league, it’s really terrible that a young prospect is setting the bar high for himself. He should really lower his expectations so he won’t have to worry about failing, said no champion ever!

I’m willing to wager anyone who called Winston’s interview arrogant has never been a champion, known what it takes to physically and mentally push themselves at that level. Keep playing it safe and “humble” boys, let me know how it works out. As a fan I want someone who truly believes they are the best, that is the first step in becoming the best.

I see some people on here trying to say that Winston has “fundamentals” issues – but all you have to do is watch the kid do his thing and see that its just effortless for him. Like throwing a 50 yard bomb with perfect touch that drops right into the receivers hands in stride. Effortless.

Winston to Evans long is going to be a thing of beauty for many, many years.

  136. Pickgrin Says:

I like that last line cmurda.

    New catchphrase.

  137. Bill Says:

EJ Manuel had both Rashad Greene and Kelvin Benjamin to throw to.

    Greene:
    57 rec , 741 yards , 6 TD’s

    KB:
    30 rec , 495 yards , 4 TD’s

What happened when the freshman replaced the senior?

    Greene:
    76 rec , 1128 yards , 9 TD’s

    KB:
    54 rec , 1011 yards , “15 TD’s”

Winston (as a freshman) boosted production by %50 over his senior counterpart. Was it talent? leadership? a better overall team? It was probably a combination of all of that.

Nole fans will tell you, this guy brings an attitude that his teammates respond to. I want that in Tampa, and according to this article, most players agree.

  150. chris k Says:

If Winston is the obvious choice they won’t waste anymore of Mariota’s time and not invite him to work out here. If he does come in for a workout then there’s nothing obvious except lazy so called experts not doing all their homework. Has anyone even given thought to maybe the Bucs are putting stories out to the media just to see what the public’s reaction is gonna be. I’ll be happy with either, but the reception the fanbase is currently given about Winston being the choice is not all roses. Do people really believe the Glazers are not considering the fans with this pick? If you believe that then you’re simply fooling yourself.

  151. knuckledragger Says:

So THIS is where you guys are hanging out. I was on the wrong article.

  152. Luther Says:

@chris k Winston is my choice but they have to invite them both just for due diligence. I would find it hard to pass up Winston though. If the Bucs omehow blow it and draft Mariota, some team is going to be very happy with Winston and I would expect him to have a chip on his shoulder from being passed up. If he’s going to be great, and I think he will, we are due for our own great QB.

It’s our turn, take Winston and start winning.

I’m not sure you understand what literally means.

If you do, I’m positive there’s a sportsbook taking drafts bets. So, by all means, show us, don’t tell us.

  154. chris k Says:

@Luther. There is no guarantee either will be great. There are plenty of people who do believe Mariota’s skillset is actually superior to Winston’s. Factor in the possible matuarity issues Winston will have when ge gets paid and the level headedness of Mariota, this makes this far from a lock. Why do due diligence if it’s a lock. When i find the car I want i buy it. I do go driving across the country trying to save a buck.

  155. chris k Says:

Don’t go driving across country. Stupid phone

  156. cmurda Says:

@chris k. When you find that car you want to buy, don’t you test drive it? And…. Just to make ship sure don’t you test drive one or two others to confirm your selection?

  157. chris k Says:

Cmurda. That is 100 percent correct. They are taking Winston for a test drive! They will take Mariota on a test drive as well. You made my point for me. It’s not a lock yet. Once i decide I buy. No decision has been made yet.

  158. MadMax Says:

@Luther, agreed! Its time we have a great QB for a change. I’ll admit, I thought he wouldnt impress much at the combine but he was on the mark with all of his passes. Plus I didnt realize how high his football IQ was. He’s very sharp.

Most of all, he’s not scared to come play for Tampa. He wants it! That changed the little doubt I had in him. I want players who WANT to be here.

  159. cmurda Says:

Of course no decision has been made yet. Mariota will be in for his test drive but he will have to surprise and impress whereas Jameis is already the car that is wanted. That’s basic due diligence. RG3 declined meeting before 2012 draft to do a private workout with Indy. It was pretty much obvious that Luck was going #1 and RG3’s agents said no thanks. If everything continues to go as it has leading up to the draft, this could look like a replay this year with Indy now being Tampa.

  160. DraftJameis Says:

In this case, you do your due diligence on Mariota in case Winston f’s up again badly between now and the draft. Neither of them are going to go behind One Buc Place on a sunny Tuesday in March and show the Bucs anything (of much substance) they haven’t seen on tape already. If Jameis is somehow stupid enough to get popped by the cops within the next 9 weeks, the Bucs can easily wash their hands and say Mariota was the guy all along.

  161. Luther Says:

@chris k disagree on Mariota. I was going to write something else but really there is no need for us to say other than we disagree. We are almost 60 days out and us fighting amongst ourselves is silly. I am going for a truce and will only say that I think Winston is the right pick and nothing more.

  162. cmurda Says:

I’m sure this has been posted and I hope this doesn’t tick Joe off, but here’s the sweet video of the Winston – Mariucci interview? Jameis absolutely nails it. I’ve watched this for 4 days and still can’t believe Winston’s knowledge.

    http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-combine-total-access/0ap3000000473191/Mooch-puts-Winston-to-the-test

  163. chris k Says:

You think because Mariota doesn’t play to the camera that he’s less football smart? That’s not what every coach who knows him says.

  164. Dr Feelgood Says:

The fact that I am always at the deep bottom of these posts shows how polorizing Jameis is. But to say that no team has offered to trade up is ignorant. They may have, but are the Bucs stupid enough to trade away a franchise QB for other picks. I would bet anything that they HAVE had offers that they are not gonna field because you cannot trade for a franchise QB to a team that needs one!! He is the real deal, and he was falsely accused, one year after the “rape”, by a gold digger!! I can tell you now, if someone rapes me, I am gonna scream on the steps of City Hall the moment I am set out of the police station!!!! My Winston #5 jersey is just waiting for the moment NFL.com lets me order it. Enjoy your hypocritical lives, haters, when this badass erases the RACIAL karma that ASSHOLE Culverhouse put on this team when he f%cked Doug Williams and Bo Jackson with HIS racial bias, and f%cked the Bucs for years as a result.
