Licht: Throw Jameis, Throw!

February 18th, 2015

jason licht 0126

Yesterday, Joe heard this driving to the airport enroute to frozen Indianapolis for the NFL Scouting Combine (yes, Joe knows the Tampa area is bracing for cold, but the next three nights in Indianapolis, the forecast low is expected to be near or below zero).

A fan calling SiriusXM NFL Radio, hearing that Florida State and Oregon quarterbacks Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota may not throw for the assembled scouts, coaches and team executives, wondered why teams can’t force players to perform full workouts or penalize them for not participating.

Take the case of Winston and Mariota. Both are throwing at the combine, per NFL Network, but there is no upside in Winston throwing. Mariota, whose shoulder may not be 100 percent after injuring it in the national championship loss to Ohio State, may not be able to throw when their time comes on Saturday. (Either could still pull out.)

Bucs general manager Jason Licht told Jarrett Bell of USA Today that, while he understands why quarterbacks won’t throw, he wants to see them wing the ball around the field.

“Of course, we come here and the guys go through their medical exams, but we want to see as many players work out as possible,” Licht, speaking from Indianapolis, told USA TODAY Sports on Tuesday. “It’s a personal decision. Every player can have a situation, be it an injury or something else, which can lead them to not work out.

“One way or another, we’ll see both of them in an extended workout.”

Again, Winston has nothing to gain by throwing Saturday. There is tons of tape of Winston throwing in ways scouts and NFL-types desire, throwing guys open, threading needles, etc.

That’s the lone knock on Mariota. The spread offense is not an NFL offense and doesn’t always include NFL throws.

Jeez fellas, smell the coffee and get the latest news. Mariota declared last night that he would throw and Winston shortly thereafter followed suit. Good for Mariota…and good for JW, against his camps advice, to compete. How about an article thanking Mariota for making this combine a WHOLE lot more interesting. God forbid the kid throws accurate lasers all over the field.

  3. Phil Says:

    Sign Jameis NOW.

  4. J 2.0 Says:

“There is tons of tape of Winston throwing in ways scouts and NFL-types desire, throwing guys open, threading needles, etc…”

I have seen a lot of tape where the FSU receiver is wide open down the field and they have to stop and wait on the ball to get to them and then pick momentum back up to complete the TD. The receivers were so painfully wide open. I haven’t seen as much footage of Winston hitting them in stride down the field.

  5. J 2.0 Says:

I also can’t help but think Winston’s draft stock is going to take a hit on March 20th when “The Hunting Ground” comes out and people see the face that has been demonized unfairly by overzealous FSU fans and have to hear her story.

  6. mikeh Says:

@j2.0- I agree where is the threading the needle throws? and hitting receivers in stride! bulls*** all I have seen is them waiting on the ball while being wide open.

Wow, you must be special to be able to see things that people that get paid boatloads of cash to see. Do you have the sixth sense? But instead of seeing dead people you see other crap that isn’t really there?

There are dozens of game tapes available on on draftbreakdown.com of both Winston and Mariota, and I’m unconvinced you’ve watched any of them.

  8. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

Props to Mariota for deciding to throw. Hopefully they both put on a great showing so the #1 pick becomes that much more valuable to a team that truly is QB needy (translation a team that isn’t fortunate enough to have Mike Glennon on roster with an OC that has had success with pocket passers). Jets, Bills, Browns, Texans, and Titans…those are some truly QB needy teams!

  9. ADown88 Says:

There is plenty of film on everything Joe said, if you haven’t seen it, you haven’t looked, because everyone else has. I also agree that there is plenty of film of guys being wide open and havening to wait for the ball in the air; however, typically when a guy is wide open, you are taught to throw at the guy opposed to leading the guy, as the completion is the important part.

Also, I don’t know why everyone thinks that The Hunting Ground is going to be this 2 hour long movie about this girl bashing Jameis and exposing him, because it’s not. Yes, she will tell her story, but she has already… It won’t change anything, and it doesn’t mean people will sudden take it all as truth, as they shouldn’t. Also, her story will only be a small portion of the documentary. Hell, nothing about herself or Jameis are even in the preview.

  10. Aaron Says:

I don’t think teams sign players “officially” before the draft anymore. The NFL trying to pump up That draft night tv ratings.

  11. INDYbucsfan Says:

Joe it is super cold here. I just spent 10 min shoveling the sidewalk and my hands and lips are numb. Welcome!

  12. Phillip Says:

I wonder if they are gonna make Jameis run this play?

.. I’ll sum up the remaining comments on here…

    20 comments about the following..
His players and coaches and teachers love him..
I’ll buy season tickets for 85 people in my family each year till he stops playing here…
Some pointless mock draft… Before any workouts mind you
He just likes to have fun and party…
    Just crab legs..
Just him saying a popular phrase..
    He wasn’t convicted of rape..
He makes some stupid joke about people bashing Jameis as we make jokes about him defending Jameis..

Then you’ll get like Eric and Warrick Dunn chiming in with the same non sense with a different twist..

    yawn

  13. Eric Says:

Looks like both guys are going to throw.

    That should be very interesting.

    I disagree.

  15. Phillip Says:

    nonsense*

The absolute worst part about you guys(Winston fans) is that you hijack every comments section like if it’s going to change ANYONE’S mind or like your OPINION matters? I understand my opinion doesn’t matter that is why I don’t post stuff about him on every article… Besides from yesterday I haven’t posted on here in weeks.. The article could be about Michael Johnson and one of you Winston nuthuggers would go on a diatribe and start the whole useless debate up again..

    Take your damn blinders off..

  16. ben Says:

Joe has a man crush on Winston who is NOT the qb for the bucs…unless you want passes being picked off or Winston getting questioned a lot by cops

  17. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

@Phillip. It goes both ways. Your (own) diatribe you easily read:

  18. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

After this whole process shakes out, Mariota is going to beat Jameis in the overall evaluation process and he will be our #1 pick. Basically everything that Winston can do physically, Mariota can do better. And we know who’s going to win the interview process. #EmbraceMariotabcuzhescomingtoTampa

  19. Eric Says:

Lots of sample wonderlic tests online.

You haters should take it and compare your results to Mr. Winston.

Surely you are way smarter than him, right?

  20. Jeagan1999 Says:

I hope they both do throw in Indy.if we are going to invest a #1 pick in one of these guys, I’d love to see them have enough confidence in their abilities to throw anytime anywhere! The other thing I’ll be watching during the combine (aside from MM and JW ….see their 40 times and what kind of general shape they are in), will be the O-linemen, the LBs and the DEs. Hopefully we will find some good players still available in the later rounds!

  21. MTM Says:

There is plenty of game tape showing Winston throwing picks for Scouts to view. Jameis willed his team to victories by playing in the ACC. The kid’s a winner! Leftwich 2.0

  22. Ray Rice Says:

    Is Michael Koenen gone yet?

  23. Luther Says:

@Eric, I’ve taken the real test and scored a 35. I don’t care if Winston scores better or worse. He should be the pick and all the haters can find another team.

  24. LUVMYBUC Says:

    QUESTION:

What’s the only thing more ignorant than Jameis Winston?

    ANSWER:

    A Jamies Winston supporter!

  26. Eric Says:

    @luther,

I don’t care either but id like to see the comparison.

I’m also curious as to how much more athletic Moriota really is. I’m thinking not very much but we will see.

Jameis has sneaky speed and can jump. You don’t play two sports in college if you aren’t pretty dang athletic.

  27. Luther Says:

I want to see the comparisons too. I think Mariota will probably run very fast but so did RG3.

  28. Skyline Crew Says:

Nothing is to be gained by them throwing at the combine. Everyone has seen them throw and it answers none of the questions about either QB except for throwing mechanics on Winston. However, as has been mentioned before the mechanics may looked fix, but in a game will he revert back to his old ways.

As far as athleticism goes, Mariota has more athleticism than Winston does and has been noted by scouts many times. The only thing in Winston so-called-favor is that he played in a traditional system.

  29. SOEbuc Says:

    @ J 2.0

I totally agree with you. I don’t know if I’ve seen winston hit one receiver in stride other than on deep bombs. Theres a lot of coming back and a lot of high throws. And you can really tell who FSU and Winston fans are in here when they cover their ears and start screaming NO! NO! NO! like a 5 year old in a toy store

  30. knuckledragger Says:

I DID see Winston throw THREE first half INTs at UF.

  31. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

    ‘Charles Davis, Mariota or Winston?’

    ‘…… Mariota.’

    ‘Why?’

‘Because on-field issues are easier to fix than off-the-field issues.’

Mariota is coming to Tampa, geniuses.

Luther, wouldn’t he be considered an Uncle Tom or something? How dare he…

  32. thegregwitul Says:

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; Just draft a QB. I don’t care if it’s Mariota or if it’s Winston, I just hope it’s the better player for the Bucs and I’ll be happy.

As for Mike Glennon, I don’t care if he beats out the rookie in camp, so long as the rookie QB is a good player and not a bust in the making, the Bucs will have a nice asset to potentially trade to a QB needy team later on down the road.

The Bucs are not trading with Philadelphia. It’s been a long time since there has been a blockbuster trade that’s involved draft picks and multiple players. As for Nick Foles, he regressed some last season and there was talk of him possibly being benched for Sanchez before Foles was injured. No thank you.

Use your head; if Chip Kelly is that desperate for a QB that he’s willing to trade a bounty of draft picks along with his starting QB to obtain the first overall draft pick from a team that is even more desperate for a franchise QB, that team better say no.

    ************

I’m hoping it is Mariota personally, but won’t throw a fit and break the TV if it is Winston. I think both of these guys are good and will great in the NFL, however, it all depends on what offense Koetter wants to run. They need to pick the right QB for the scheme. If you aren’t going to utilize Mariota’s strengths then it is a wasted pick and would rather not go down that road.
