Josh McCown Cut

Starting quarterback Josh McCown was released this afternoon by the Bucs.

The Bucs have released starting quarterback Josh McCown.

In a stunning move, the Bucs waved goodbye to turnover-prone Josh McCown today, the club announced this afternoon. Joe will let Buccaneers.com editor Scott Smith offer the details.

On Wednesday, the Buccaneers released veteran quarterback Josh McCown, who started 11 of the team’s 16 games last season, including the final eight. An unrestricted free agent who signed with Tampa Bay last March after three years with the Chicago Bears – including two under current Buccaneers Head Coach Lovie Smith – McCown was anointed the Buccaneers starter over incumbent Mike Glennon to start the season. Glennon, who started 13 games as a rookie in 2013, regained that job in Week Four after McCown suffered a thumb injury at Atlanta on September 18 but the team went back to the veteran passer in Week 10.

McCown’s original contract with the Buccaneers was for two seasons, but since it included no signing bonus or any other 2015 bonuses, Wednesday’s release will not adversely affect the team’s salary cap situation.

In his 11 games with Tampa Bay, McCown completed 184 of 327 passes (56.3%) for 2,206 yards, 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions and he also ran 25 times for 127 yards and three touchdowns. He joined the Buccaneers after a very strong 2013 campaign in Chicago in which he started five games in place of an injured Jay Cutler and recorded a 109.0 passer rating. In Tampa, McCown was a team captain and a well-respected leader in the locker room. His NFL career also includes stops in Arizona, Detroit, Oakland and Carolina and he has thrown for just over 11,000 yards in 73 games and 49 starts.

So much for McCown being the mentor for Jameis Winston, eh?

  15. Mr. Patrick Says:

    Winnin’ with Glennon!!!

  16. Waterboy Says:

Lol doesn’t sound like they’re planning to trade down.

  17. Warthog Says:

Is this really a ‘stunning’ move joe? Seems like a no brainer considering his salary.

The question now is – will Glennon be retained as backup or will he be traded and a different cheap vet brought in?

  18. Couch Fan Says:

Thank you for your services and good luck with your future endeavors. Thank you Lovie.

  19. BucFan20 Says:

    There goes the mentor!!

  20. Pickgrin Says:

Who is going to try and spin the we aren’t taking a QB #1 story now??? Go ahead. I dare you to be so foolish in public.

  21. matt Says:

    Woooooh!!!! Jamis Winston sweepstakes

  22. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

Guess that means they keep Glennon? Even if he doesn’t start, I don’t see another better capable back up out there.

  23. DallasBuc Says:

I still cannot get over the fact that Lovie and Licht actually hired this career failure to QB a professional football team. My football team. Lovie Smith should be ashamed. McCown did his best which is awful but completely predictable based on past behavior. Lovie did the dirty to his best friends’ dog on this one and should acknowledge his failure in a publicly shameful way. He won’t because he can do no wrong.

  24. matt Says:

I bet they bring him back at a cheaper rate

  25. WS99 Says:

    Joe
You don’t have a pic of mccown crying on the podium? That would be perfect for this article. Haha

  26. Aceofaerospace Says:

    Well, we’re half way there.

  27. keithv Says:

    Whelp…..
    this was a no brainer

  28. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Cutting him early gives him a better chance of being picked up….decent guy…..wish him well….

Even though this is part of the puzzle for next year….it still tells us nothing…..we could draft a QB….use Glennon as backup……..Bring in a FA….Trade Glennon…..who knows?

  29. Rrsrq Says:

U know Lovie will sign a vet, he will not go into the season with a rookie and a 3rd year player, i.e., trading Glennon and drafting a QB, or not trading Glennon and bringing in David Garrard (jk), but some vet with potential to start, who knows what to expect. Josh enjoy the 5 mil u got that Revis didn’t get for us.

  30. Name Required Says:

    Bucs just won the off-season!

  31. Pirate Marcus Says:

    Take Lovie with you.

  32. WS99 Says:

$5 says he goes to the Ravens as a backup and some how wins a ring.

  33. Waterboy Says:

Now just bring on Winston and let Glennon back him up. That’ll completely satisfy the fan base down there, one nice QB that they shake hands with and cheer for and another one who will finally help win some games!

  34. WS99 Says:

I’m not totally against bringing in Vick, what say you?

  35. Rrsrq Says:

I think Dirk Koetter, looked at the McCown tape and said either he goes or I goes

  36. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Next man up…….Mike

    Kafka

  37. bucrightoff Says:

Glennon or someone else who’s already in the league (Bradford?) is pretty much locked into opening day starter next year. Guess we’ll find out come FA time.

  38. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Joe…..new Lovie confidence poll please….

    Tanked last game
    Hasn’t lost a game since
    Hired Koetter
    Hired Bajakian
    Leans Winston
    Cuts McCown

Wow…..my guess he will improve substantially!!!

  39. Connor Says:

Let Glennon start until Winston is ready. He’s cheap and much better than McCown

  40. SOEbuc Says:

Just went from 6 to midnight

  41. Pickgrin Says:

Let’s not have any dissing the guy when he just lost his job. He played as well as he could under difficult circumstances – and took a lot of punishment back there with nary a word of complaint about it.

MccCown served his purpose well – especially at the end of the season when we were absolutely trying to lose but not appear to be.

    Thanks for your efforts Josh.

That said – this is definitely in the best interest of the team.

Now all we have to do is draft Winston. Let Glennon and Winston fight it out in camp and pre-season for the right to start on opening day.

  42. Not ...... "The Kevin" Says:

Just watching a video on the top five on the leagues website under a bucs article….man that Leanard Williams looks scary. Like a young Warren Sapp.

Haven’t watched him play. Is he really that dominant?

Lovie may be licking his chops to put Him, McCoy, McDonald and Smith out there at once.

  43. Iknowmorethanlovie Says:

This move was by Licht as Lovie doesn’t have it in him to cut his boy

  44. DallasBuc Says:

WS99- I wanted us to sign Vick last year instead of that repulsive failure Lovie paid $5mil. At this point Vick would be a much better mentor than McCown from a football perspective since he has had success and from an off field perspective because he has been in so much trouble and been truly reformed. That is a completely different guy coming out of jail than going in. I’m all for it.

  45. OneLove Says:

    I just came!! LITERALLY!

  46. Rrsrq Says:

No to Vick, how’d that mentor thing work out with Geno, not to memtion, a few years ago coming out of jail, oh yes, but way past his prime now, I’m a Mike Vick fan

  47. beeric Says:

Even Dungy needed a QB to win. Good luck to McCown but man did I just sigh in relief.

  48. White Tiger Says:

Wow. The gift of Jeff Tedford…it just keeps on giving, eh?

Goof luck Josh, I’m sure you’ll have another shot before you hang up your cleats. May it be for a team with a real OC next time…

  49. beeric Says:

Edit: Even Dungy needed a QB to win a super bowl.

  50. White Tiger Says:

Wow. The gift of Jeff Tedford…it just keeps on giving, eh?

Good luck Josh, I’m sure you’ll have another shot before you hang up your cleats. May it be for a team with a real OC next time…

  51. Jacko101 Says:

johnny football and 2 2015 1st pick for our first pick?

  52. Pickgrin Says:

If you see Vick signed – then that would be a pretty clear indication Bucs are drafting Mariota. If there is no other QB on the roster come draft day that resembles the style of player Mariota is – then Bucs are absolutely picking Winston and running with Glennon as bridge/back-up.

You could never convince me that we are taking Mariota if Glennon is staying. Their styles of play are polar opposites.

BTW – apparently Lovie wasn’t fibbing when he said Glennon is our future. Future back-up perhaps but I’m guessing he will have his chance to earn the starting job next year – for awhile at least…

  53. White Tiger Says:

Why? Do you run a rehab clinic?

  54. ddneast Says:

Don’t like to see anyone lose their job but a I think McCown has set himself up well enough he’s not to worried about it.
Tough competitor who was saddled with an inenexperienced inept OC like the rest of the offense last year so perhaps we shouldn’t be to harsh in our judgment.
As for WS99, his continuous comments display what a totally classless jerk he is. What else did you expect from a troll? I’m sure your coworkers will feel the same way about you when you lose your job down at Mickey D’s, WS 99.
By the way, after you finish abusing your poor wife, do her a solid and put a leash on her and reward her with a walk around the block.

  55. IdahoBucsfan Says:

Trade the picks and Play The Cannon!

  56. Mr. Patrick Says:

Time to warm up “The Cannon”

  57. Pickgrin Says:

that was pretty harsh and personal ddneast

  58. Joe and Johnny Football Forever Says:

I knew he would be cut because he wasn’t worth 5 mil per season…. BUT, I am surprised that he was cut this many weeks before free agency. Weird. And the first one to go?

  59. Mr. Patrick Says:

I do wish Josh well. He really took one for the team last year

  60. The Buc Realist Says:

To me, the Bucs had to do this, no one in there right mind would buy a ticket if there was a remote chance that Lovie would start McCown for next season!

  61. ddneast Says:

LOL. I guess if you stick around out here you hear just about every stupid insane remark there is.
However, considering the source of the comment, how could you a expect anything other than pure convoluted thinking.
DallasBuc says Michael Vick would be a better mentor than McCOwn. Really?
What is Vick going to teach him. How to lie to an owner and a commissioner.
How to be cruel to animals. How to stockpile money in the prison commissary.
He sure isn’t going to teach him how to read an NFL defense because after 10 years in the league he still can’t do that.
You really are a tool DallasBuc, a dull tool.

  62. Eric Says:

    Wonder what this means.

Obviously keeping Glennon. No way they are starting a rookie out of the gate at QB.

    Hmmmmm

Got me on this one. Surprised.

  63. Ladyfab Says:

    tHANK YOU JESUS

  64. theshaz Says:

I am fine with Glennon being the towel holder behind Winston.

  65. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

Not many NFL teams will have the luxury of having 2 QB’s of the Future on their 2015 roster
    Glennon and Mariota

  66. WS99 Says:

Diss me all you want but don’t talk about my family.

  67. bucrightoff Says:

Can people seriously stop suggesting we trade for Manziel? Did you all watch him play last year? Worse than Tebow by a wide margin. Cannot make a 10 yard out throw at all, and basically runs around hoping something works out. He’s flat out terrible and he is not a key component to a trade and is a distraction of the highest order. He’s out of the league in 2 years or less. So please stop pining for him, Glennon is at least triple the QB Manziel is.

  68. Ray Rice Says:

This feels just as good as when I busted a nut this morning….. Well come to think of it…. No it doesn’t. But man it sure feels good.

  69. Jeagan1999 Says:

I’m surprised, but not a lot. I didn’t think they were going to trade Glennon. The question is what now? You would think that if they were going to draft Winston, they would have kept McCown as a mentor, but that’s out the window now. I’d say it’s even money now between drafting Mariota and trading down in the Draft and starting Glennon (or trading down and picking up a veteran QB). But who really knows at this point. I’m sorry things with McCown didn’t work out better for us and him.

  70. DallasBuc Says:

ddneast- you want the guy that has never won in this league to be a mentor and I want the guy that has had a history of playing at a high level his entire career. Vick was a bad guy and did bad things, paid dearly for it and returned back to society and football a better man. Vick has a wealth of experience on and off the field that would be helpful. Just because Geno Smith was not good last year doesn’t mean Vick was a bad mentor. Your liberal use of correlation as justification for calling me a tool is TheKevin level irony and humor. You two peas in a pod are virtually indecipherable on this site. Keep it up tough guy…it’s a hoot!

  71. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

Hey…I just remembered that backward fumble…..McCown and Jameis have alot in common….

  72. LJ'sDaddy Says:

Thank you. I thought Lovie would March that piece of crap out there again. Woooooooooohooooooooooo!

  73. Bucsqb12 Says:

I just don’t see Glennon being very happy about mentoring. He’s young and wants to start. But then again, 5 large is a lot for a backup/mentor. Maybe they trade Glennon and find a cheap veteran. Strange times at One Buc.

  74. Pirate Marcus Says:

Hope we don’t cut one turnover machine for another cough Winston cough

  75. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

Koetter has already praised Glennon…..Glennon has a role with the Bucs next year

  76. Skyline Crew Says:

Can’t wait until Lovie finds out. Haha

  77. DallasBuc Says:

Bucsqb12- who gives a sht if he’s happy?…it”s mike Glennon!

  78. Buc-O's 82 Says:

    MGM, YESSSSSSSSSSSS

  79. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

Mariota will be our starter by Week 1.

  80. Skyline Crew Says:

    @Pickgrin

Have to agree that if we draft Mariota we couldn’t keep Glennon. Will have to wait and see what happens.

  81. carlstoe Says:

If we get Foles we can run the double dynamite formation! Teams wouldn’t know where the snap is going! Cannon is working with Shaun King to put on 20 pounds this offseason.

  82. Mr. Patrick Says:

So I just re-read Koetter’s remarks where he said that they want the next Buc’s QB to be mobile and be able to use that mobility to pick up 1st downs on 3rd down. Then saw where he said that he likes Glennon who reminds him a lot of Matt Ryan. Then they release McCown and still have Glennon.
    Anybody else confused?

  83. Senor Mofo Says:

    @Erik with CleanAthletics.com

Actually, Mariota will be our starter by May 1st.

  84. Eric Says:

    I’m confused,

I would have thought you keep the older vet to back up a rookie.

Start Josh over Mike then cut Josh to play Mike?

    Makes no sense to me.

  85. Pelbuc Says:

Good! Now cut Collins, Goldson, Cousins, MJ, koenen, Galkey and of course, Lovie.

  86. Jlynch Says:

Josh Mc cown mentor? are you kidding me teach somebody to make bone head plays and throw picks nfl follies are josh mc cowns game tape!!!!!!!

  87. Pickgrin Says:

It’s not confusing at all Patrick. This means your worst fears are about to come true. We are drafting Winston and Mike Glennon will be our QB until Winston can win the job. That is very clear to me with this move.

If we had kept McCown – then he would have been capable of running the type of offense that any team who picks Mariota will adopt. His mobility would allow it. Since Glennon is staying -his lack of mobility means we will have a traditional pro style offense with a the emphasis on QB plays from the pocket. That means we are drafting Winston. Easy Peasy to see that now.

  88. Jon Says:

Classic…another miss by the front office of L&L. Unreal to be this bad in one offseason. Now we celebrate as if they did something good. Good would have been making better decisions last year when they broke the bank. Worst offseason in NFL history.

  89. iamkingsu Says:

How in the hell can we get a decent pick for mike glennon now??

  90. Luther Says:

Trade down twice and put Evans at QB…sounds crazy but I’ve seen crazier posts here.

Draft Winston and enjoy the ride.

  91. Joe and Johnny Football Forever Says:

” Cannon is working with Shaun King to put on 20 pounds this offseason.”

    LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  92. Eric Says:

Lovie had no options at QB.

Only what rock star and Schiano left him.

There were no other free agents to bring in at the position. Post Freeman fiasco disaster.

    ——————————————————————————-

It makes sense if you were intentionally tanking the last 5 or 6 games of the season in order to get a REAL QB in the draft….

  94. Bucs Fan #237 Says:

Seriously… he benched Glennon for what?

  95. CLW JB Says:

    Amen

  96. Pickgrin Says:

BTW – we didn’t need to pay $5.25M to McCown in order to “mentor” Winston (or Mariota). We have a very capable QB coach who makes a lot less than that – and none of it counts towards the salary cap.

Bucs just freed up enough $ to fill one of the holes with a good FA.

  97. rayjay1122 Says:

It is funny to me how many trade back fans undervalue the #1 pick. If the Bucs would be stupid enough to trade back with the Browns for 2 1st rounders and Manziel….well that may finally be enough for me to head to the Skyway for a swan dive!!!

  98. Senor Mofo Says:

    @Pickgrin said:

    ————————————————————————————–

    That’s some very interesting dot-connecting.

But you couldn’t be more wrong. Mariota is our pick.

  99. Luther Says:

I wonder if McCown cried when he was released. Maybe they will offer him a spot on the coaching staff when he retires.

  100. StPeteBucsFan Says:

This entire “mentor” thing is grossly overrated! They have an excellent OC who can “mentor”. They have an excellent QB coach who can do even more mentoring up close and personal.

If they draft Mariota he won’t need mentoring. He’s a very bright coachable kid.

If they draft Jameis his mentoring will need to be in how he handles himself off the field not on it. Like Mariota Jameis can learn the NFL ropes from a solid OC and a solid QB coach.

We better hope that DB55 can keep Jameis head on straight. That’s the only “mentoring” that concerns me.

  101. Eric Says:

Well now that they are left with only one QB I suppose it could mean they have made up their minds to draft one.

    Dang if I know.

  102. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I’m a Marcus Mariota guy, but if anything this makes me think they are either going with Winston, trading for a passing QB, or signing one to mentor Winston.

OR, maybe there will be a FA mobile QB to mentor Mariota. Michael Vick maybe? Then again, his past character concerns are an issue as well.

    Expect McCown to retire.

  103. OB Says:

Someone with common sense has entered the building. Someone listened and saw how he played last year.

  104. StPeteBucsFan Says:

BTW. I doubt anybody can really answer this but I’m curious if Kafka has any talent at all. Perhaps Joe saw some of him with the practice squad.

One could say that the fact he couldn’t beat out McCown or MGM speaks volumes about his lack of talent. But it could just as easily speak to an inflexible head coach who was not about to admit a mistake until he was forced to admit it.

  105. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Which, btw…before he even signed with the Bucs I said there was achance he would retire after one year.

  106. tmaxcon Says:

Glennon is not going to be on the roster to mentor Winston. They will get a 6 or 7th round pick for the backup, heartless and check-down guru. If Glennon sees the field the only positive is it will me Lovie is on the way out the door.

  107. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @StPeteBucsFan

O don’t know his potential talent level, but I’m guessing promises were made to McCown that he would be the starter last year. If nothing else, Lovie tries to be a man of his word.

  108. tmaxcon Says:

Expect McCown to surface in Jacksonville.

  109. Mr. Patrick Says:

    @ Pick
So where does all of the mobility come from? Winston and Glennon don’t have it

  110. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @tmaxcon

While I agree with you that Glennon would not be a mentor, I’m not sure he’ll be gone either, barring a trade.

Really, if they go after Winston, who is a pocket passer, they would need a pocket passing backup. That would fit Glennon.

As far as mentoring, we’ll see who it will be. I think we’ll have 3 QBs again this year.

OR…and I hope this isn’t the case…they might make a move to get Cutler. Give up our first, get Cutler and their first…or something like that. Not saying I like the idea…just that it is possible.

  111. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @BucBonzai

Agree about Lovie trying to be a man of his word. We can criticize Dungy/Lovieball but nobody can really criticize the character of these two men.

I think McCown just felt too much pressure to protect Lovie’s rep. McCown is no world beater but he played waaay below even his talent level. He was brought here to protect the ball and he made decisions that were impossible to imagine.
He is a nice guy but honestly he choked.

  112. Mr. Patrick Says:

Maybe they will bring in Hoyer to battle it out with Glennon, or get Foles or Bradford. We all know Lovie loves his vets

  113. The only Buc fan in Montana Says:

I know he’s gonna be 40…but what about a guy like Matt Hasselbeck as a backup? Maybe a guy who knows Koetter’s system, like TJ Yates? Maybe bring back Josh Johnson? Face it, if we draft Winston, he’s starting day one, like it or not, and Glennon could fetch us another 3rd rounder, which should be worth an upgrade at OL or DE.

  114. Seminole Bill Says:

There are 3 different reasons for this:

    1. Since a veteran QB as mentor is a necessity, the Bucs are getting ready to swap their #1 for an experienced QB like Nick Foles plus a late first round #1 and #2;
    2. When Lovie said Glennon was the future he meant it; the Bucs are swapping their #1 for a late round #1 and a quality OLineman;
    3. Lovie and Licht have gone off their rockers. Why cut a veteran QB and end up only with a rookie?

  115. Mr. Patrick Says:

    @ Bonzai
OMG, please don’t use the “C” word (Cutler)

  116. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    DallasBuc Says
    >i>”ddneast- you want the guy that has never won in this league to be a mentor and I want the guy that has had a history of playing at a high level his entire career. Vick was a bad guy and did bad things, paid dearly for it and returned back to society and football a better man. Vick has a wealth of experience on and off the field that would be helpful.”

Vick only makes sense IF they plan to draft a mobile QB. On field, he was a media darling early in his career, and the focus was on his mobility. As a result, he neglected the development of his passing game.

Was watching a story on NFLN yesterday and they were saying this, and that when he returned to the league, he had become a better passer.

So…that considered…I think if they sign Vock, the pick will be Mariota. He’s someone that could mentor a mobile QB and would stress the need to develop the passing ability as well.

They ONLY reason he would be useful with Winston is the off field issues experience…and frankly, according to Winston people here, he is innocent, right? So why’s he need behavior mentoring at all?

Setting aside the off field issues, Vick points toward Mariota.

  117. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Mr. Patrick Says
    “@ Bonzai
OMG, please don’t use the “C” word (Cutler)”

I know. I don’t want it either. BUT…it remains a possibility. Really, it wouldn’t be a completely horrible thing, especially if it means we get their first with him and can address the oline.

  118. Skyline Crew Says:

They very well could take Hoyer with Glennon and draft Williams. Just saying.

  119. kevin Says:

If the Bucs draft Winston Mike Glennon will win the job anyway. So why waste the pick? Draft Mariota and have a competition through training camp. Do the Hard Knocks show. Create some real buzz. Win a GAME!!!!!!

  120. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @StPeteBucsFan

Personally, I think McCown should consider coaching. He has a good offensive mind, knows how to play the game well, has plenty of experience, and has good off season training and leadership habits.

It’s just that when he gets on the field, he screws up everything he knows.

And there are plenty of bad QBs who become great coaches.

  121. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @Skyline Crew

I’m not against Hoyer…but part of me wonders if it is the while McCown thing all over again, just younger.

  122. Senor Mofo Says:

Draft Mariota. Sign Matt Hasselbeck at vet minimum, or maybe a little more. Do not go gentle into that good night.

    Move on.

  123. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Hard Knocks is a strong possibility this year…especially with the #1 pick.

“BTW – we didn’t need to pay $5.25M to McCown in order to “mentor” Winston (or Mariota).”

We didn’t actually pay McCown that much. His contract had incentives and he barely met half of them.

  125. ddneast Says:

No problem DallasBuc. The fact that you and WS99 “think” alike doesn’t surprise me in the least.
Michael Vick as a mentor. I’m still laughing. And you think I have convoluted thinking?
I think every time I read one of your inane posts, I will preclude my statement with, “from the same person who thinks Michael Vick would be a great mentor.”
I didn’t even mention what Vick said this year when he was called on to finish a game. I believe it was something like, “I didn’t prepare enough for this game. I didn’t spend enough time on preperation. I didn’t take it serious enough.”
Really? What a great mentor he would be. Thanks for keeping me in stitches. LOL.

  126. DRAFT #5 Says:

This is the clearest sign yet that this team is drafting a QB at #1. They have already tried the retread and Glennon route and that got us a 2-14 season. Don’t see that happening again. L & L will surley be fired if we go into another season with that type of QB situation. Winston is the best prospect and that should be the pick.

  127. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    McCown,

Good Lawd –you took a beating last year. No hard feelings brotha–wish you all the best in all your future endeavors.

  128. iamkingsu Says:

Why in the hell do you’ll keep talking about trading back?? Just LOOK at the St Louis Rams they knocked it out the park the last 3 drafts with a plethora of picks and still are only an OK football team. Why?? Because they don’t have a qb you idiots. Take Winston at 1. Thank me later!

Incorrect. McCown earned $4.75M this year and was scheduled to earn $5.25M in 2015. Those #s had nothing to do with incentives.

  130. DRAFT #5 Says:

Micheal Vick should no way be a mentor to anyone. He is a horrible QB and even when he could run he sucked at throwing the ball. I do not know what value he would bring to this team or to helping any rookie. Also he did so well mentoring Geno Smith we need him down hear. I think not.

  131. finishers Says:

    here comes Sam Bradford!

  132. Connor Says:

And what exactly did we accomplish by benching Glennon for McCown, Lovie? We could’ve let Glennon play out the season to evaluate him!

No, Lovie is a genius right?

  133. Howard Cosell Says:

Lovie says we have a choice between Cutler, Bradford or Grossman,
    and we’re drafting Williams

  134. Mumbles Says:

Bucs have issued a APB for Cousins and Gilkey. Word is they’re holed up in the equipment room.

  135. JSmalls Says:

Hey…I just remembered that podium crying…..McCown and Mariota have alot in common….

  136. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @iamkingsu

The Rams roster is stacked higher than giraffe pu**y. Them brothas-just one or two pieces away from being a POWERHOUSE.

  137. WS99 Says:

I just stopped by OBP and gave the security guard a high five. The place was packed he said they were having wake services. #RIP

  138. WS99 Says:

AGAIN. A poster who uses an example that argues AGAINST his opinion for the absolute need to draft a QB.

First of all the Rams are far more than an “OK” team. They are a young and very talented team that is on the rise…totally unlike the BUCS!

Secondly,..DUH…they used the #1 pick in the entire draft on a QB!!! What is your freaking point? That drafting a QB#1 overall in the draft is not necessarily the answer. You idjits are actually arguing for a trade down to gather many picks for the large number of holes in our roster.

Four years in a row, 4 of the past six years a QB was taken with the #1 pick!
Andrew Luck is undeniable a “franchise QB”. Matthew Stafford and Cam Newton are good QB’s who are never going to carry a team on their back like Luck or Brady or Rodgers. Yes Stafford and Newton are upgrades over our QB’s but do they really get you all that excited?

And AGAIN St. Louis took Sam Bradford. His career in the league is now hanging by a thin repeatedly repaired ligament.

  140. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

What’s the salary cap implication here? I know we were $23M under before, did we free up any more?

I’m wondering if this is a sign that, once again, the Bucs are going to try and be very active in free agency

  141. Connor Says:

Hoyer would be the best option on the free agent QB market. At the right price.

  142. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    That’s not a bad sign.

  143. Tampabaybucfan Says:

This cut really doesn’t tell us much of anyhing at this point except McCown has no future as a Buc.
Free Agency is just aroung the corner….and there are many QBs that could come to us and fill any capacity we needed…..starter included.
There will also be others cut like McCown
Now…..if we go through FA and still have Glennon…..that would certainly be evidence that he will likely be on the roster in 2015.

What if Koetter came in and stated that “You have your starting QB & it’s Mike Glennon”…….not likely….but possible.

I highly doubt that at this stage a final decision has been made about the draft.

  144. cmurda Says:

    @ Luvmybucs

Exactly right about the Rams. They fleeced (pun intended) the Skins. The Rams are so stacked it’s scary especially on the defensive front. That is a team literally 1 Qb shy of a playoff run. I’m still on the trade down bandwagon but only if it is a great deal otherwise I am on the Winston bandwagon.

  145. Tampabaybucfan Says:

If we go through Free Agency and still have only Glennon…..

  146. iamkingsu Says:

    @everyone
Thanks for taking the bait. First round picks are 5 years and 2nd round are 4 years. By the time they become good football teams those contacts will be up and they will be in salary cap hell

  147. cmurda Says:

    WS99 Says:

HEHEHEHE!! 2015 has been a great year, I’m going to go home and fck the wife. Yippie! #grownmangitty.

Hahahaha. This man thinks like I do.

  148. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

    TBBF

Dirk Koetter would have been up for quite a few OC positions during the offseason. In my mind there IS NO FREAKING WAY he would have passed up other opportunities to come to a 2-14 team if he wasn’t told that, under no uncertain terms, we will be drafting the QB that he wants with the number one overall pick.

  149. iamkingsu Says:

    @St Pete
How was I arguing against my own opinion?? My point was why trade back when we are in desperate need of a qb??

  150. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

I have a funny feeling that Sam Bradford might stay healthy for awhile and end up being really good…. I’d still greatly prefer Mariota, though.

If the Bucs draft Winston Mike Glennon will win the job anyway. So why waste the pick?

    ===========================

Did you actually read what you wrote? You think Glennon will beat out Winston but not Mariota right now. Glennon probably starts over both at this point but I’m pretty sure most if not all experts would start Winston before Mariota would see the field.

  154. bucrightoff Says:

With McCown gone, Collins likely gone, Mike Johnson possibly gone, EDS possible gone (they kicked on tires on the top CFL centre) safe to say last year’s FA class will go down as one of the worst in NFL history. Throw in the guy they cut in Revis being elite again and winning a ring, and it was a total calamity, being generous.

  155. iamkingsu Says:

    @everynody
Go back and read my comment again. I clearly said they knocked it out the park in the draft but they lack a qb so they are only an ok football team.

  156. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @WS99
    @cmurda

    No doubt

    @iamkingsu

With the new TV Deals, annual 25% roster turnover rate; no worries.

Worst case scenario-their not able to resign everyone–players leave through free agency-and the Rams are rewarded with a bunch of compensatory picks (Ref.Bill Belichick)<–That's how the rich keep eating Sir.

  157. Supersam Says:

I guess Joe will have to find someone else to consistently make fun of harass and ridicule for showing emotion for his team losing at the podium. Not to mention the constant blame for all our loses, forgetting the fact the guy had zero running game zero pass protection and zero imagination from a young offensive coordinator. Hope your happy JOE you got your wish.

  161. iamkingsu Says:

    @luvmybucs
Do you see a tom Brady on the rams roster?? It’s easy for Bill to do that while dealing with that big of a roster turnover because he has Tom. A great qb can cover up the deficiencies of a team in this pass happy league. AGAIN that’s why you take Winston at 1!

  162. kevin Says:

I think michael johnson will get another shot

  163. iamkingsu Says:

And yes Winston will be a Great qb!

  164. Babaloo Says:

We will trade glennon got picks of draft day

  165. Supersam Says:

To blame one person for everything that happened this year is just stupid and idiotic. It’s a team game. Tom Brady would’ve got killed under the line we had last year. Get real

  166. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @iamkingsu

Once again Brady walked into a turnkey situation with New England. That roster was ready to compete. The Genius of Bill is keeps the roster suited and booted with fresh prospects (Heartless)–and he keeps the offense a simple as he can for the new recruits with the Erhardt-Perkins system.

Without imagination, there’s no innovation, without innovation there will be no progress!!!

  167. iamkingsu Says:

Everything I’m saying is implied in the first comment I made. I was just saying you need a qb in this league to win. I just used the St Louis Rams because they were the perfect example because they traded down and got the best deal you could possibly get and hit onall of their picks. And after all that are only an ok football team. They have talent but “overall” are only ok!

  168. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @iamkingsu

My point is –The Rams are just one or two pieces away from being a perennial playoff contender in the toughest division in football. Thats far from being ok

  169. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Thanks for the convo brotha-until next time–Peace In the Valley

    GO BUCS!!

  170. iamkingsu Says:

    @luvmybucs
They been the same team the last 3 YEARS. They always play tough in the division. It’s when they go out of the division they struggle (i know they beat Peyton). For goodness sakes we should’ve beat them week 2 and we had josh Mccown at qb!

  171. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Kevin

We save only $2 mil of Johnson’s $9 mil on the cap…..we cut him and we still have to pay him $7mil……he absolutely will be kept….

  172. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Besides becoming the 1st team in NFL history to record back 2 back blowout

    Vs
    Oakland W 52-0
    Washington W 24-0

The Rams had recorded 3 signature wins this year. All while starting a *3rd string QB

    Vs
    Seattle W 28-26
    San Francisco W 13-10
    Denver W 22-7

Just one or two pieces away

  173. Howard Cosell Says:

Well, I’ve been told that its the fans who’ve made all of the
poor decisions over the last decade.
So it must be Joe who got McCown cut.
Joe’s a mean, mean man who doesn’t see the great upside
of McCown who cried for his team after a loss!
What more do you want? Bastards.

    # TheKevinsays “Worst fans ever!”

  174. Mr. Patrick Says:

So Sorry Winston lovers, but Koetter said that he wanred a QB that doesn’t throw interceptions

  175. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    *back 2 back blowouts

  176. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @CreamsicleBananaHammock

I tend to agree that Koetter will have a strong influence…I suspect he can work with Glennon, Mariota or Winston…..he’s a real pro.

I did say it was “unlikely” he stated Glennon was the guy.

  177. Sick of this $hit Says:

I think this news dooms the the chances of Mariota being drafted by the Bucs, especially if they keep Glennon. We all agree that Mariota is a top shelf athlete and would best be used if the OC can build an offense around him. That leaves Glennon as a back up in a scheme he cant operate in.

That was my point. If Glennon is the only decent QB on the roster come draft day – it means we are taking Winston. There’s no question in my mind about that now.

  179. iamkingsu Says:

    @luvmybucs
I said they always play tough in their division. And we blanked the Redskins too and for Oakland they are worst than us. Those shutouts were overrated and the tables turned quickly. Eli came in and lit them up

  180. ChessMaster Says:

Josh McCown was like a bad bishop blocked in by his own pawns. Unable to exert any scope on the playing field and was a liability rather than an asset.

  181. iamkingsu Says:

    *Oakland worst than them(redskins)

  182. Howard Cosell Says:

The Cannon is a legit QB.
Maybe not Andrew Luck, but who knows?
Face it: Schiano was a terrible NFL gameday coach but he knew talent.

    It will either be:

1.) Cannon and a another vet (pick from the list).
    2.) Cannon tutoring Mariota.

Cannon could very well turn into one of those guys who hits it big with
another team if we trade him….and we don’t want any more of those
    embarrassing moves, do we.

  183. Barry Says:

  185. BirdDoggers Says:

Lovie’s prize QB already gone? You don’t say. Most of Lovie’s free agent class from last year could follow McCown out the door and it would be an improvement. Lovie needs to coach up the defense and nothing else. No input on the offense. No personell decisions. Just coach.

You Mariota people kill me. Can’t you see that people keeping saying great athlete? That’s code for he is really fast and agile but can’t really play qb. You don’t hear things like he throws with great anticipation or he does fit the ball into tight windows. Other things you won’t hear is wow did you see that throw, only a handle of guys can do that, or man did you see how he broke that tackle and still got the ball down field. And lastly what has never been heard and will not be heard is man did you see that comeback Mariota orchestraed in the 4th quarter to win the game.

  188. ChessMaster Says:

Next up, Anthony Collins and…..what was that DE name again?

  189. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Like it or not….Michael Johnson won’t be cut…and probably isn’t tradeable….

He is due $9mil….7 guaranteed…..only 2mil in cap savings….we will keep him and give him another shot…..

  190. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Oh yeah and as I’ve also been saying…with the first pick in the 2015 draft the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select Leonard Williams…it’s the only path to some measure of success Lovie knows, and I’m good with Glennon + Koetter if they fix the O line
