Jim Miller Talks To Joe
February 4th, 2015If there is a better football show available to a fans’ ears than “Movin’ the Chains,” heard exclusively on SiriusXM NFL Radio during afternoon drivetime, Joe has not heard it.
Co-hosts Jim Miller, a former NFL quarterback for the Steelers and Bears, and Pat Kirwan, a former linebackers coach and front office executive for the Jets, are music to football fan’s ears. They bring unmatched insight from the football field, the locker room and the front office.
During Super Bowl Media Day, Joe was able to get a few questions in to Miller about the Bucs.
JoeBucsFan: If you are Jason Licht, what do you do? There are as many as nine positions that can be upgraded this Bucs team has so many holes. Where do you start?
Jim Miller: Well, I think quarterback is going to be a necessity. I do think they have to build up their offensive line a little bit. I know they brought in Anthony Collins and those guys a year ago, but historically, guards and tackles that have gone in the first round have served [their teams] and played pretty well. Even centers. Look at Alex Mack and Nick Mangold, centers that have been drafted in the first round. Maurkice Pouncey, they have all proven to be solid picks. I’m a big trenches guy. I believe you build up the trenches on both sides of the ball. But where the Bucs are picking, they are going to have the pick of the litter when it comes to quarterback. [Quarterback] is so thin at that position [in the draft]. I came from the Senior Bowl and Bryce Petty at Baylor and Garrett Grayson out there at Colorado State are vying for that third and fourth quarterback picked, and maybe you should throw in Brent Hundley, too. Are they first round picks? I highly doubt it.
This is Joe’s point exactly. Just as Joe told his good friend, “The Big Dog,” Steve Duemig of WDAE-AM 620, yesterday. Joe is a big trenches guy, too, but you can get solid if not very good offensive linemen in the middle of the first round or early in the second round. More often than not, you can’t get a good quarterback there, especially with what is available in this year’s draft, and what is expected to be available next year.
Quick, name a decent pro-style quarterback that is expected to come out next year? Joe can’t think of any.
And would you be willing to roll the dice on a one-year wonder? That springs to mind Akili Smith, quite frankly.
Joe will have more from Miller tomorrow.

If and I day IF the Bucs are sold on Winston after all of their evaluations, then let’s take him and I will be one of his biggest supporters. I do have counts though. If Mariota is the guy they get then I will totally support him. Winston is immature and Mariota seems like he has a monotone personality. I just want the best QB to be a Buc regardless of who it is.

Shameis (The next tenant for the Orient St. Hotel) would be the younger version of Josh Gordan of the Cleveland Browns. He is already on that trail to surpass him.
February 4th, 2015 at 9:22 am
Doubts… Damned auto spell.
February 4th, 2015 at 9:24 am
Pretty sure the top QB next year will be Connor Cook from Mich St., doesn’t look nearly as good as JW/MM
February 4th, 2015 at 9:24 am
If you want to get the fans excited, take a QB with the #1 overall pick. What else would they do? Take ANOTHER DE or LB? Yawn.
We so desperately need a QB and their are 2 available to you with the top pick.
If we don’t take a QB, the fan base will literally explode.

QB prospects look to be less for next year’s draft. This year with the #1 pick it’s time to pull the trigger. Roll the dice…Mariota or Winston. Study and investigate them, then choose 1 and ….take the chance!
February 4th, 2015 at 10:08 am
If the Bucs somehow can trade down for picks and still come away with Mariota, I’d be a very happy camper…
February 4th, 2015 at 11:02 am
Conner Cook runs a decent pro style at MSU and has the tools to be a top 10 pick next year. If he reduces the amount of chances/risks he takes and checks down (dumps off) to his 3rd or 4th option this year, his rating will go up. Has a very solid oline. He’s better than you think. He’s got a quick release, he’s got a strong arm, he can throw on the run.
February 4th, 2015 at 11:17 am
Miller made 2 good points.
Trench guys drafted in the 1st round do very well for a long time, and Bucs really heed a few
This is a very weak QB class from top to bottom.
Just because a mule can outrun a goat doesn’t make him a thoroughbred

Treyvone Boykin, Kevin Hogan, Dak Prescott, Grayson, and Connor Cook are the top 5 next year.
February 4th, 2015 at 11:46 am
Sorry, Grayson is coming out this year.

@ Skyline
Don’t forget Cardale Jones. If he starts for OSU and plays like he did this year he will be at the top
February 4th, 2015 at 11:54 am
No thank you to Cardale Jones.
February 4th, 2015 at 11:54 am
But-O’s. You’re a schmohawk. You know what they say about opinions. JW has not failed drug tests.
February 4th, 2015 at 11:54 am
I bet he doesn’t even start next year up there if Braxton stays.
February 4th, 2015 at 11:57 am
“Quick, name a decent pro-style quarterback that is expected to come out next year? Joe can’t think of any.”
Too easy Joe…Hackenberg will be a junior and eligible to declare for next year’s draft. I’d much rather see the Buc’s take him than either Mariota or Winston but fear his former HC (O’Brien) will be trading the farm away to make him the face of the Texan’s franchise
February 4th, 2015 at 12:00 pm
Of course if Braxton transfers to FSU then there will be pornstars at the games. Who can resist that offer, right?

Here are the Top 5 Cs in the draft with their overall rank and projected draft round.
58 Reese Dismukes – 2
72 Hroniss Grasu – 2-3
103 Andy Gallik – 3-4
144 B.J. Finney – 4-5
171 Shaquille Mason – 5
February 4th, 2015 at 12:19 pm
From those projections you can see that there will be some quality OGs in the draft in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, but if you want an OT you have to go 1st round. Centers are what they are.
February 4th, 2015 at 1:09 pm
Joe the decent QB next year will be the one that won the national championship at OSU.
As far as this year, only Dirk Koetter knows what he is going to do as far as offense is concerned, so he should selected the best one for it.
You are for Winston, I am not. Gordon was just suspended a year and if Winston does anything wrong, because of his past actions, he is going to be hammered by the NFL. Getting up on a table and shouting what he did plus the shoplifting is indicative of someone that believes they are above the law knowing full well that he was going to be in the draft this year. Give him millions guaranteed on top of that and you can’t control him because he thinks he has all the money in the world and it will keep coming. I also don’t believe that he can think and pass fast enough to defeat the rush.
February 4th, 2015 at 1:30 pm
Winston is not Josh Gordon…Winston is not a druggie.
If Winston stands on a table and says the same thing again after he has millions. Nothing will happen for the commish.
People just blow this stuff out of proportion. Then again, then have their own opinions and Winston will have to prove them wrong either here in Tampa or from some other state, while they are crying at what could have been.

The top five drafts are Smithwick’s Irish Ale, Buddy Weiser, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Newcastle Brown Ale, and Guinness.
February 4th, 2015 at 1:38 pm
The QB must be taken this year, no ifs ands or buts about it. There is no way that we don’t draft a QB this year. Otherwise what are we doing just tanking the season before it even starts just so we have to start a rookie next year? No way. It will be a QB this year and the entire season will be devoted to developing that guy (hopefully Winston) although I would be more than happy with Mariota. But, there is no way that it won’t be one of those two guys.
February 4th, 2015 at 2:07 pm
For one thing he wasn’t on a table.. Read.. Read.. Stop believing the first thing you hear.

*******
Is this the FA pool coming out?
February 4th, 2015 at 2:42 pm
Sky
No, those are draft picks. The top five FAs would be Fuzzy Navel, Jamaican Me Happy, Lime Melonade, Calypso Colada and Bahama Mama.
February 4th, 2015 at 3:28 pm
Ha…I think the top 5 draft picks are Three Philosphers Quad Ale, Devil’s Backbone Catty Wompus, Old Bust Head Chinquapin, Allagash Black, and New Holland’s Dragon’s Milk.
February 4th, 2015 at 4:55 pm
Skyline – I like your ‘draft’ picks much better than OAR’s. I live here in Devil’s Backbone country. They have one that they made with Apocalypse Ale Works called Devil’s Secret. Have you ever tried anything from Founders out of Michigan?
February 5th, 2015 at 3:38 pm
LOL about people talking QBs next year. Then next year comes and it will be the same talk…well in 2017 there will be this guy and this guy and that guy.
Spit or get off the pot. Trust me, if the Bucs are picking top 5 next year and they don’t already have their rookie QB, none of the current regime will be making that pick.
