Jameis Watch: “Controlled Environment”

February 9th, 2015

Jameis WinstonCrab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, former national champion Jameis Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon and Josh McCown.

It’s Joe’s daily nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback to wear No. 5 ever in the state of Florida.

Like every other guy that has declared for the 2015 NFL Draft, Jameis Winston has lost his cover. There’s no more blanket from their college’s public relations staff and a protective head coach.

The media gets a free shot, and that comes at next week’s NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

Unless something changes, Winston will stand before 100+ NFL media types and field all kinds of questions.

It’s an important moment because it showcases how a future face of a franchise handles himself in the big-boy world.

Today on WDAE-AM 620, Bucs beat writer Rick Stroud and columnist Tom Jones talked about the meaning of Winston leaving the “controlled environment” of FSU and Jimbo Fisher. Jones also shared the various personas of Winston he experienced while covering him in person.

(You can soak in the audio below.)

Joe is quite sure Winston will be engaging, serious and entertaining when he is grilled next week. He’ll be extraordinarily coached up to prepare for the inevitable rape questions, and every other possible query that attempts to discredit him. No. Joe doesn’t expect Winston to wilt or cry on the podium, like his potential mentor did in November.

  1. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

Is there any word yet on whether or not Winston is going to throw at the combine?

I’m hoping the competitor in him comes out and he decides to throw since Mariota won’t, but I haven’t heard if he is or isn’t yet/

  2. Robert 9 Says:

Not a message board link parade. –Joe

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

It’s Monday morning & apparently we can rest easy that Winston didn’t behave badly this weekend…..11 more weekends until the draft…..but, if he is selected….even his avid supporters will always have some anxiety…especially in the off-season.
Let’s hope the “controlled environment” doesn’t end up being a jail cell or ankle bracelett!!!

  4. Nybucsfan Says:

Hope the bucs pass on the rapist AKA the hunting ground AKA JABOO

  5. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

“Hayward said the school could not divulge Winston’s grade-point average because of privacy laws. Ricky Rabb, who is now a part-time assistant coach at Hueytown, said Winston’s GPA was 4.0. The quarterback received the Butch Wilson Award for the highest grade-point average for a football player.”

“He’s got this infectious personality,” Dilfer said. “A lot of people use the term leadership, but I like guys who are comfortable in their own skin. That’s Jameis. He came in a little unprepared, and he admitted it. But he’s got a real presence to him. I’ve been real proud of him.”

  6. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

The interview process will be a breeze for this kid.

  7. labuc Says:

I hope he impresses. If we get Winston we will ten games and instantly become playoff contenders.

  8. INDYbucsfan Says:

Ah the time of year where I fake being sick so I can spend my week downtown Indy bothering everyone I recognize. It’s been long awaited!

  9. Robert 9 Says:

I watched some tape on the kid. I gotta say, the kid looks like he can play ball.

it’s the off the field stuff though……….

that and from some of the things i’ve seen…. it just seems rehearsed, not genuine, like he says all the right things, but something is just not right.

  10. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

“He not only did well in school, he had colleges here all the time recruiting him, and he withstood the pressure,” Hayward said. “His grades were so good he talked about going to college to study to be a podiatrist.”

“Hayward shook her head from side to side dismayed by the public perception of Winston. “I think it is very unfair. He is a charming, polite kid; I never saw the bully in him.”

  11. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

“We had these ninth-grade boys walking past him gawking, but he handled it well,” Boshell said. “He didn’t act like a lot of seniors when they are around freshmen. If they needed help, I saw him help them. He never treated those kids like peons.

“He is a very bright kid. He picked up things in that class right away. He ate my class up.”

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Listen….only a fool would not wish him well…..I hope he perfor like a champ and lives a life like Jeter……surely he would love to play for the Bucs,
I have never questioned his talent in any way shape or form.
I want to win and win often over a long period of time.

I also hope Mariota makes all the throws and impresses all. I am hoping this comes down to a choice of two future francise QBs that all other teams would covet….and we pick the best one.

I stll maintain that I will rest easier with Mariota….heck, the subject of this article prooves that there is concern.

  13. Eric Says:

“His work ethic in terms of how he bleeds the cause, undeniable. He gives it up for his teammates, works his butt off behind the scenes. And that’s when he really wants to really rise to the occasion for his guys. He’s a team guy first, not a me guy. He pours himself into his teammates and I think teams will get a chance to see that.”

    55 on 5…….

  14. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

Breeze through the interview process. No worries.

  15. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

I’ll rest easier on Sunday nights into Monday morning knowing Winston just won the game for us.

  16. Marcus_Mariota_Mob Says:

    Mariota.

  17. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

I’m tired of feeling like crap every Monday morning after games. I’m tired of the sleepless Sunday nights. I’m tired of NEVER having a franchise QB.

    I’m tired.

  18. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

TBBF, I love how you keep holding up Jeter on a pedestal like that’s how you want Jameis to act.

Can you imagine what you guys would be saying if a story came out tomorrow about Winston handing out gift baskets to his one-night-stands like Jeter does? It would basically be a reason to tar and feather Winston

  19. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

We need to get Greg Hardy. He’ll hit the market now and he would be the final piece on the dline. Only 26 years old too.

If I were Licht, I would be clearing cap room to get him to sign. The thought of playing against the team that turned their back on him may entice him greatly.

  20. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @CreamsicleBananaHammock

Did Mariota announce he won’t throw at the Combine?

  21. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

As a Noles fan I rested easy on Saturday nights…and then Sunday would come along and depression would set in by Sunday night.

I’m tired of it. That’s right I said, I’m tired of it!

  22. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

BuccaneerBonzai are you freaking kidding me?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

You’re a guy that’s concerned with Winston’s character but you want to bring in Hard?!?! You can no longer post concerns about character…that ship has officially sailed

  23. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Eric

    “team guy first”

I beg to differ…..anyone who, after being accused of rape, gets up on a table in public and yells “FHRITP”….is a “me” guy…..a person who doesn’t care what anybody thinks. This was on 9/16/14….just a few months ago. He was suspended for one half….(could have been worse).

  24. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @CreamsicleBananaHammock

Yes….I hold up Jeter as an example of a HOF pro athelete that played 2O years as a fantastic role model to kids and a credit to his sport.

The problem for Winston is that he will be under a microscope and every little thing he does will be magnified out of proportion….that is what happens when you have a reputation for bad behavior….its unfortunate, but that’s the media world we live in.
Now, if you’d like to suggest another role model….I’m open…as

  25. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

Upon winning the Heisman trophy Jameis Winston says : “it’s not about me, it’s about FSU.”

  26. Couch Fan Says:

Im just wondering TBBF were you there when he stood on the table? Did you hear from a friend of a friend? How can you judge him and say he’s a “me” first guy, despite just about everyone else who actually knows him saying otherwise. I give you that hearing the fact he stood on the table and yelled that is odd behavior but if you know absolutely nothing about the rest of the scenario…. such as maybe he was dared to do it? and being the personality he is, he did it. Or it could be a million other things that we arent hearing for why he did it. But again, I guess he is guilty until proven innocent right? Lol

  27. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @CreamsicleBananaHammock

I’m open to other role models…as long as they are NY Yankees…..Mariano Rivera OK with you?

  28. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

Many of the hometown folks view him as quite different from the persona seen inside the 24/7 media stream that announces him as a nuisance, and possibly worse.

    Just ask them about “Jaboo.”

“He’s my hero,” said Arron Smith, 11.

  29. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

    Perhaps…A-Rod?

  30. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Couch

I believe that there were many witnesses and his coach suspended him for the action…are you saying it didn’t happen.

And, I hardly think doing something on a dare gives person a excuse to be stupid.

Supporters seem to go to extraordinary lengths to excuse all of his actions….I guess the end justifies all the means for fans who look the other way.

If we choose him, I certainly hope I’m wrong and it was simply an isolated “brain fart” on his part

  31. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

“People say, ‘Well, Jameis Winston must not have had much discipline as a kid if he is getting into this much trouble,'” said Chris Rabb, a defensive end at University of Alabama-Birmingham, and Ricky’s brother. “You wouldn’t say that if you knew his parents. People have no clue.”

“He never missed a practice,” Ricky Rabb said. “He worked out with the football team summer mornings, then went to work out with a trainer right after that, then he went to baseball in the afternoon. Jameis had a lot of discipline. His parents stayed on him.”

  32. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

TBBF, you don’t know any of these guys or who they really are.

Kirby Puckett was a role model….until we found out how he really lived. Bill Cosby was a role model. Steve McNair. I could go on and on and on.

We don’t know these guys — and that includes Jameis. If you do any digging into Jameis and read what anyone in position of authority who has spent time with him has said, they are always glowing reviews on the type of person the kid is.

  33. ben Says:

Bucs can draft the best qb in the draft which is M.M. Why would you want a guy that is not the best to be the face of your team. How long before Winston gets into trouble again with all the money and women around him ?

  34. labuc Says:

If we pass on Winston it be hard to see him become a star somewhere else.

  35. Couch Fan Says:

are you saying it didn’t happen.

    —————————————

Um… No? Might want to read my post again. Lol. Why does it sound like you are so dead set in your ways that you are twisting what I said?

You said he’s a “me” first guy. I gave you an example of why that might not be true. Just cuz he was suspended doesn’t make him a “me” first guy. Nobody said it was a smart thing to do either.

But aye, guilty until proven innocent I suppose that seems to be the motto around here.

  36. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Couch

    No, I wasn’t present….but I think it’s highly likely to have happened…..apparently the “I took a dare” excuse didn’t work for him….

As the university’s most visible ambassadors, student-athletes at Florida State are expected to uphold at all times high standards of integrity and behavior that reflect well upon themselves, their families, coaches, teammates, the Department of Athletics and Florida State University. Student-athletes are expected to act in a way that reflects dignity and respect for others.

As a result of his comments yesterday, which were offensive and vulgar, Jameis Winston will undergo internal discipline and will be withheld from competition for the first half of the Clemson game.

The University and athletics department will have no further comment on the matter.

  37. Nybucsfan Says:

A rapist should be no once hero. I don’t care if he can throw a football. He should be in jail where JABOO belongs. I can’t believe some many people play dumb and ignore the fact he is a rapist and got away with it. Dude is a low life. Who gave this guy the nickname JABOO? That’s like the comparison to rapistburger. JABOO sounds like a rapist nickname

I believe that there were many witnesses and his coach suspended him for the action…are you saying it didn’t happen”

The problem is that people take rumor as truth verbatim. I wasn’t there, so, I don’t know exactly what happened. Some people prefer to assume the truth. I don’t assume the truth. We don’t even know exactly where he was…it might have been at the top of steps, and not a table at all. It certainly wasn’t a cafeteria. There’s so much misinformation on this.

NICE BLAST ON MCCOWN there JOE. Crying on the PODIUM>>>

    HA HA AHA HAHAAH

  40. Couch Fan Says:

Derrick Brooks was suspended at FSU. Is he a “me” first guy also. According to your logic he very well could be.

  41. labuc Says:

Forty percent of Marcus throws are WR screens. It’s the play call that allows them to go up tempo. And soon as you adjust to stop it that’s when they hit wide open guys down field. Haven’t seen anything that says good NFL QB

  42. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @CreamsicleBananaHammock

That’s exactly the point……none of us “know” any of these guys….so our opinions are shaped by their public (known) behavior.

Look at Tiger Woods for example, a model citizen….then…..bam!!!

And….the second Mariano or Jeter “f” up….they fall right into the same pit.

All I am saying is that Winston will be in the spotlight….and his supporters won’t be able to save him if he screws up again!!!

  43. Couch Fan Says:

Umm.. again, I never said it didnt happen. Lol

Not sure what you are reading but you might need to slow down and take a deep breath. I asked if you were there because I wanted to know how you could be so certain he’s a me first guy as if you were there to see the situation unfold.

Nowhere did I say or imply it never happened. Keep trying to twist.

  44. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

TBBF, and I’m saying that if Jameis conducted himself exactly like Jeter has, then he would be described as a scumbag womanizer with no respect. Certainly would have no business as the face of a franchise.

    The double standard is sickening

  45. armchairGM Says:

Interesting read here on Jameis the high school years. Paints him in a pretty good light and towards the middle you can see some things that maybe foreshadow some of the things he gets negative criticism for during his time at FSU. Anyhow if you haven’t already it is worth a looksy:

Let’s hope Jamies doesn’t turn out like Derek Jeter. We wouldn’t want him put on an Oscar winning performance and pretend to get tackled. 😉

  47. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @Love & Warrick Dunn

I read your article….and the lengthly attempt to excuse Winston of the incident.

I was impressed by the source below:

  48. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

It is NOT what Jameis does in front of 100 NFL media types…..it is what Jameis does behind close doors….in grocery stores….on Student Union table tops…in private property he does not own with BB guns…on and on…

  49. armchairGM Says:

I have to agree with creamsickle on this one buccaneer bonanzi, you have been coming down hard on Winston and Hardy’s is much worse than what Winston was accused of.

  50. Robert 9 Says:

    The double standard is sickening

We finally agree…..you are prooving my point…..any person has a mountain to climb to try to undo their own bad reputation.

You have never seen me accuse Winston…..I only question…..I give him the benefit of the doubt on things that haven’t been proven like the rape.

  52. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    @tbbf

That’s what you took from it? Interesting.

  53. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

TBBF, then that has nothing at all to do with performance on the field and contributing to W’s. Will it hurt Jameis’ endorsement opportunities? Maybe, although after a few years of playing well the endorsements will come no matter what. But that doesn’t matter one iota on the field.

If Jameis is the better prospect — which he undoubtedly is — then you take him and never look back.

  54. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @Love & Warrick Dunn

No…I took much more than that…..I took that the details of exactly where it happend may be in question….but, I took that the incident did happen…..the writer tried to excuse the beahvior by describing the behavior as “really not that bad” etc.
The point that I am making with the source is that in the age of the Internet….many things are reported and accepted as facts when they may not be.

  55. budnbeers Says:

I believe in Jameis. Undoubtedly, the best QB in the draft. And he’s not a rapist. Get over it.

  56. Couch Fan Says:

Creamsicle gets it. And dont worry there wont be any more table shouting profanity incidents. I’m sure Lovie with have a stern talking with him cuz we all know how Lovie hates cursing.

  57. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Not Guilty does not mean Innocent!!!

Greg Hardy was deemed guilty by a Judge but in NC he is entitled to a trial by jury.
The case went to trial today and the accuser didn’t show…….so it was dismissed.

Now, Hardy is not guilty of a crime…..but, in the eyes of many…..he is not innocent.

Does he deserve a another chance….absolutely..(Mike Vick)…..will teams pass on him and will it likely cost him money…..oh yes.

  58. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ CreamsicleBananaHammock

You can search every single post I have ever made…..not once have I ever questioned Winston’s ability on the field……and, I actually agree that he may be the better “prospect” as far as football player is concered……but “prospect” includes the entire package.
I reserve judgement on Mariota’s ability to adjust to the NFL….I’ll leave that opinion to someone more qualified than me, or Joe, or 87, Couch, or you…..to determine

  59. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    “@tbbf

many things are reported and accepted as facts when they may not be.. ”

Are you trying to be ironic? Because that’s my point too. We have no idea exactly what went down, or the context.

The media jumped on this and reported he was in a cafeteria and jumped on a table and screamed it. Millions of people believe that’s what occurred now, and we know at least part of that is completely untrue. Shoddy reporting. See ironic statement.

And the fact that someone didn’t attach their name to it changes what about the photos and tweets and other context? I would rather have all that information, anonymously, than ESPN reporters tweeting out stuff that they spent zero time vetting.

  60. buddha Says:

All you have to know about Jamies Winston’s intelligence is evinced by his statement that “the only thing as vicious as rape is falsely accusing someone of rape.” That is absolute, unmitigated ignorance. The chance of being falsely accused of rape is about the same as a person’s being struck by lightening. Rape affects millions of women and their families. Anyone who who would play the victim card by trying to make being falsely accused of rape–which we don’t know and likely never will know–with being raped is a person who has given little thought to the whole issue and is a morally bankrupt individual. The people who study and do research on rape have estimated that the chances of being falsely accused of rape are somewhere between 50,000 and 100,000-1.

We can agree that Jamies Winston is a damn good football player. And Joe is right, he will be coached up, (though I think we can also agree that a Winston Press Conference doesn’t give the impression of a Rhodes Scholar). But a person’s character can’t be changed. He is deep down a misogynist. The outburst that caused his coach and university to suspend him cannot so easily be bracketed as “an error in judgment.” It was vulgar and misogynist. This is not “immaturity.” It is character and morality. It shows how he feels about the relationships between mean and women. He is not the person I want as the face of this franchise. I believe that the Glazers will do the right thing for the community and for the team. Anybody who believes that Jamies Winston is not going to ever have problems with the law or with women again knows little about human behavior and character. He has shown for the past two years what kind of football player he is and what kind of person he is. We have to live with how we have acted. Winston has earned our respect as a football player and our condemnation as a person.

  61. Couch Fan Says:

All you have to know about Jamies Winston’s intelligence is evinced by his statement that “the only thing as vicious as rape is falsely accusing someone of rape.” That is absolute, unmitigated ignorance.

    —————————————————

Ignorance? You are correct that there is very few incidents of someone falsely accusing someone else of rape but it does happen. If Winston is, or thinks he is, being falsely accused of rape this comment makes perfect sense. There is ignorance in this post but its not from Winston. Its from the outsider doing the judging of which he knows nothing about other than what he wants to believe. But aye, do your thing.

  69. Couch Fan Says:

Your exactly right Patrick, so when Winston is picked at #1 you will have no reason not to root for him as you just admitted Licht/Lovie will be able to see through any BS. Will be a great day! Though I am sure you will find some silly reason not to root for him.

  70. Eric Says:

Mariota =’s the NFL QB’s of the future
Winston =’s the NFL QB’s of the past

  76. Mr. Patrick Says:

For all of you that don’t read all the posts or have a clouded short memory, I have already stated that if the Bucs do make the horrible mistake of drafting Winston that I will supprt him heavily because I am a true Bucs fan, unlike some others on here

  77. StPeteBucsFan Says:

The rape allegations, the screaming of obscenities while under investigation, the BB gun and the crab legs…any of these by themselves would pass. Taken together as a pattern if folks cannot at least admit to red flags they are delusional. The due diligence better include a whole lot more than a PR event at the combine!!! Not saying I wouldn’t draft him, but I would be truly nervous at this point.

Apparently most of you missed the fable about the scorpion and the frog!!!

The scorpion needed a ride across the river to the other side and asked the frog to give him a ride on the frogs back as he swam to the other side.

“Are you crazy” asked the frog. You’ll sting me and I’ll die.

“Are you crazy” asked the scorpion. “If I sting you we’ll both go under and I’ll die to.

The frog accepting that logic lets the scorpion jump on and about halfway across the scorpion stings the frog!

The frog asks with his dying breath, “Why did you do that? Now we’re both going to die”.

The scorpion replies, “I did it because I’m a scorpion and that’s what scorpions do!”

Let’s just hope Jameis isn’t a scorpion who will take the franchise down with him.

  78. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

Patrick…keep digging. You got more than that. It’s all smear tactics.

It’s not a cafeteria by any means, rather an environment where standing on outdoor benches is a daily event.

This doesn’t change what he said, but offers a clearer picture for those who have never been there.

  81. Mr. Patrick Says:

    Oh really?

  89. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

It was the same talk as last year and as the 2013 season went on, everything looked peachy until Mariota’s knee injury during the Stanford game. The Ducks dropped two of their last four regular-season games before running away with a big win over Texas in the Valero Alamo Bowl.

So, the question was, how much did Mariota’s injury hamper him? How much did it affect the Ducks? The win over Utah was fine, but a one-point win over Oregon State seemed much too close. And the loss to Arizona would’ve seemed unfathomable just a few weeks earlier.

The obvious statistics tell one story that, yes, the knee injury affected Mariota greatly. He hadn’t thrown a pick at all during the 2013 season and then he threw two a piece in the Arizona and Oregon State games. He had accounted for nine rushing touchdowns before the injury. After the injury? He didn’t find the end zone with his feet again.

I agree with your post except the part about being nervous. There has to be an exhaustive search into the mans background. No doubt. But if they do a good job researching into everything they should feel confident in there decision one way or the other. No need to be nervous. There are 2 QBs. If not Winston then you got the choir boy Mariota to fall back on unless they don’t like him either. Then there are other options, no need to be nervous.

McShay said the Buccaneers and any other quarterback-needy NFL teams potentially interested in Winston will have to answer for themselves whether they feel comfortable with Winston being the face of the franchise. He labeled Winston more NFL-ready as a pocket passer than Mariota.”

“This isn’t to single out McShay’s analysis. It’s clear that many people within the league feel that way and believe that Winston will be drafted ahead of Mariota, even with Winston’s off-field issues while at Florida State.”

I can continue, but I think this is enough. These are updated ones and some have changed their minds others have not.

Mariota is the better QB and we should definitely take him.

  128. Skyline Crew Says:

“In high school, however, having Winston around was a thrill for some, a nuisance to others. Winston was boisterous; some days his effervescence was OK, and some days he took it too far. He would nag players on the baseball field or football field, belittle a little too much, and then the teammate being heckled by the star quarterback would have enough and snarl back.

In the midst of one such argument, Winston reminded a teammate that Winston had the Division I scholarship and the teammate did not.

The issue for many of his classmates was the overbearing nature of “Jameis Winston, Superstar.” Winston has a vibrant personality, and it was not easy for him to turn it off for the benefit of others when they wanted some peace.”

  129. Skyline Crew Says:

“It was just that he was always loud, always the center of attention,” said a classmate, who did not want to be named. “Some people liked him, some people didn’t. He got wrapped up in the celebrity too much and he got away with some things.”

The classmate said there was an incident where Winston got irritated and overturned a table in a science class and it was ignored. Winston would scream at offensive linemen on the sidelines of games, “so loud you could hear in the stands,” said the classmate. “He dogged them out.” Coaches let it pass.

The downside of the antics at FSU, said the classmate, is that “everybody loves Ant, his father. … I imagine Ant is furious at some of these things.”

  130. Skyline Crew Says:

An unidentified veteran NFL offensive coach told ESPN.com’s Mike Sando that the primary concerns surrounding Mariota’s games are generally overblown:

It is mostly a bunch of bull. What is interesting about Oregon is that they have most of the pro concepts in their pass offense. The easiest thing to teach is how to play football under center. The bottom line is, when Mariota gets the ball in his hands and drops from there, he has no problems. He is athletic and he is so in control of everything—on the sideline, on the field, how he handles himself. Plus, he is every bit as tall as Winston.

  131. Skyline Crew Says:

Those drafts also have Winston going #6 to the Jets. I guess Winston is slipping down the mock drafts.

  132. Skyline Crew Says:

I bid you adieu all. Have fun and stay safe. Draft the best QB in the draft (Mariota).

I think we can take him safely as long as we have a good motto, like: Jameis. please don’t shame us! Look, there are a lot of players that have been tagged for misdeeds in the media and have gotten, or will get a second chance and there are even more that have committed crimes that have not come to light. How many players does that leave for a team to choose from? They can’t all be perfect human beings. Just don’t become hypocritical. This is football, not ordination for the priesthood. I might or might not pick Jameis, but if I had a chance to pick up Jameis, AP, Hardy, or Suh, Rice, or even Incognito, would they help the Bucs be better next year? I think if the answer is yes, then you have to consider it strongly and provide them a second (third, etc) chance. or the team will just continue to suck forever.

    ___________________________________
Set them back from what? How can they be worse than they are now? You are worried they will stay exactly this crappy for the next 3-5 years if we get Winston? Well, if the Bucs remain that crappy, then we’ll get another chance to get another QB with yet another 1st round pick, won’t we? We have to take a chance on getting a franchise QB sometime and whichever one they choose, the result of that decision will be a crap shoot, it always is.

Find it hard to believe women would protest Winston and be all in on Hardy.

  139. WS99 Says:

I can confidently tell you with all sincerity in the world that SB Nation has ZERO clue about what they’re talking about ESPECIALLY sander and the other one. Huckey Duckey the only one that has a clue.

  140. Bill Says:

    @BoltIsle,

I agree, Hardy’s situation is notably different. It’s worse in the sense he was judged to be guilty, albeit not by a jury. I’m not sure what that means by North Carolina law, but a charge and a guilty verdict is 2 degrees farther than Winston legal progression.

Winston’s is worse in the sense that rape is largely considered a more serious offense, but talk is talk.

To step aside from the specific stories for a moment, I know a few of you are ex-members of the media. I was wondering if any of you might be willing to offer your thoughts on the broad issue of a “24 hour news cycle vs a long and drawn out legal system”?

The media has significant power over public opinion and it appears that power is starting to cost people substantial amounts of money as a result of the media getting out ahead of a very slow legal system. I feel like a lawsuit directed at the media is just around the corner. Maybe not with Winston or Hardy, but say the next 5 years. Thoughts from people who have been there?

  141. Luther Says:

It amazes me that people don’t want a promising kid in the draft that has a little growing up to do but they are all to will to bring in a grow @.. man who was actually convicted and should know better.

  142. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I come from the media and I can tell you that there is an absolute hunger to fill the cable 24/7/365 news cycle…..that hunger has grown especially since the Internet.

Remember Gary Condit…..he was the only person that benefited from 9/11….he was in the news every day until the towers were hit….then gone.

As far as the media being sued….it happens quite often….most recently with George Zimmerman’s suit against NBC…….not successful….as is with most suits against the media……the media is insulated because you have to prove malice….deliberate attempts to defame….and they also classically use words like alleged….or we believe…etc…..this lets them off the hook.

    ——————————————————-

That is one hell of a concession coming from you Robert. I’m proud of you for doing some homework and saying that. Seriously.

Now you might as well take it a step further and do some more research on the kid since it’s looking more and more like he will be a Buccaneer. Go watch some you tube videos of Jameis in environments that are not rehearsed – that are not speaking in front of the media. There are a # of them showing him being completely himself. He’s got a very likable personality from what I’ve seen. His coaches and team mates have always liked and respected the hell out of him from most everything I’ve ever seen or read as well.

If the relatively small but seemingly very vocal group of people on JBF forums who seem to truly despise Winston as much as you did Robert – would themselves get serious about watching some Winston tape and do some research into who he really is as a person – I think most of this Winston vitriol would just melt away.

On the field – he is one of the 5 best QB prospects to have come out in the last 10 years and a lot of “experts” agree with and confirm that. And not one of his actions in the last 3 years would have caused him to miss an NFL game.

Winston may not be the eagle scout persona that Mariota seems to be – but he’s likable, he’s confident, he’s got all the physical skills and mental football knowledge that scouts covet in a QB – he’s a positive yet fiery leader and most importantly a proven winner!

At FSU – 27-1 Record – Six 4th quarter come from behind victories including clutch play in the waning seconds of the biggest game of his life to win the National Championship. 7-0 record in games decided by 7 points or less.

What the hell more could you ask for?

So will the Bucs take the 2013 Heisman winner?

“I see Winston in a Bucs uniform,” Kaufman said. “Yes, there will be protests . . . but I think in terms of pro potential, I think most people would tell you Winston is ahead of [Marcus] Mariota.”

Thanks for your insight. I’m sure there are many attempts to sue the media that I’m unaware of, as well as the logic behind the results, hence my question.

The concern I have (hopefully your willing to continue sharing your insight) is the burden to show malice has always been combined with the reporting of facts. What’s strange is that “traditional media” outlets are using the anonymous sources of twitter and the like to break news, but these social media “sources” have no credibility or responsibility to be accurate.

I understand proving malice is difficult, but what happens when willful ignorance becomes the claim?
