“I Hate That For Mike”

Josh McCown is a proud member of the Mike Glennon Mob

Josh McCown hasn’t been crying today, less than 24 hours since the Bucs and his ol’ pal Lovie Smith cut him.

McCown even took an upbeat lap around various national radio shows.

McCown did lengthy chats with Adam Schein on SiriusXM Mad Dog Sports Radio, as well as PFT Live on NBC Sports, plus Movin’ The Chains, with Jim Miller and Pat Kirwan on SiriusXM NFL Radio.

One highlight Joe will share now came from the latter chat.

McCown told Kirwan and Miller about how he has changed offensive coordinators every year of his long career and he is bummed out that the same thing is happening for Mike Glennon.

“I hate that for Mike,” said McCown, who believes Glennon has star potential.

“He’s definitely got the arm talent, higher level arm talent in our league,” McCown said of Glennon. “And he’s got a good demeanor about him and an outstanding work ethic and he’s an intelligent kid. He’s got the variables that you want to be able to have success at that position.”

McCown said he counseled Glennon at length last year to work extra, extra hard, explaining that McCown’s early years were too focused on learning the playbook and not the position.

McCown went on to say he believes Dirk Koetter is a great fit for Glennon because he has Matt Ryan-like tendencies.

In typical McCown fashion, he was very complimentary of Lovie and Jason Licht but was totally focused on his future.

There was no chatter about Jameis Winston or Marcus Mariota, but McCown did talk about how disastrous it can be a for a rookie QB to play before he fully understands NFL offense. McCown said that’s a great way for a kid to develop bad habits.

This is EXACTLY why we didnt see much of Glennon last year!

  2. Greg Schiano Says:

It is not McCown that is cryin…it is the Big Poodle!!! Ok…now it is time for the Glennon backers to flood the Big Poodle’s show on WDAE telling him that the Buc’s are going to trade down because Lovie trusts Glennon and wants to draft defensive players!

Why take a chance on Winston when you have a future start QB1 in Mike Glennon?? Trade that #1 pick to Chip Kelly (he has the talent to use it) and let him pick Mariota! Winston can go the the Ram’s at pick #10! Lovie is really hot about getting those extra picks because he knows he only has 1 more season and Glennon gives him a much better chance to win in 2015 than a rookie QB does!

So…Lovie trades the #1 pick…he gets Bryce Petty in Round 3 and Glennon starts all 16 games for the Buc’s in 2015!!

How about that Mike Glennon!! Hey Big Poodle!! Are you all about the Glennon mob now??

    Greg Schiano

  3. budnbeers Says:

Mad max Glennon wasn’t a rookie last year.

  4. MadMax Says:

Duh! I didnt say he was…..he didnt have much time to sit and learn DURING his rookie year!

  5. MadMax Says:

Shush it Greg…..we’re drafting a QB 😉 (helps our trade down value to fake that, so shush) lol

  6. Eric Says:

Josh is a great guy, but can’t play in the league.

    Like a certain duck.

  7. Buc-O's 82 Says:

    MGM

  8. Greg Schiano Says:

McCown is really saying that he hates it that a super talented QB like Mike Glennon is trapped for another year with Lovie Smith! McCown understands that Glennon could be a starter on most other teams with his special variables and super arm talent, but he cannot get consistent coaching with Lovie Smith!

Hopefully…Glennon can stick it out one more year as no way that Lovie survives another repeat of last years debacle! What a mess…team could have easily been 8-8 but for a little coaching…so no matter who is throwing the ball, with Lovie coaching it is going to be a long year!

I am really looking forward to Mike Glennon’s press conference as QB1 of the Buc’s….maybe the Big Poodle can get us Press passes so we can go down and hang with Mike!!

The 2015 season is looking up as no matter who Lovie picks, we still have the uber talented Mike Glennon as the starting QB!! It is going to be an excellent season!!

  9. Jeagan1999 Says:

McCown’s departure CLEARLY indicates that the Bucs are leaning toward Marcus Mariota with the #1 overall pick.

  10. tgreg Says:

Please trade Glennon to the Saints and draft Winston, then I can laugh at the Bucs for years…Lovie knows talent..LOL

  11. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I can see more similarities between Glennon and Chris Sims.

  12. Matt B Says:

What really scares me is putting any rookie quarterback behind our offensive line as it’s currently constructed. That’s a sure way to get the kid shell-shocked, lose all his confidence, and ruin his career [see David Carr].

  13. Drew Brees Says:

Jameis Winston would make an excellent second or third round selection, if not available I am sure there will be many other (better?) selections to be had in the later rounds to compete with the Cannon. It is time for Glennon to put up or move on. Mariota looks to be a first round “project” or “system” player, the Bucs don’t have time for that.
With the first selection pair McCoy with Leonard Williams or Randy Gregory. Sapp was great but when paired with Simoen Rice the defense hit the next level.
As far as, trading down, I just don’t see partners in this draft for that. Who is worth moving up for? But if someone goes nuts and offers multiple picks for the first selection Dante Fowler at DE would be intriguing along with an offense tackle but that would be dreaming.

  14. Mr. Patrick Says:

So here’s what I find interesting about Mike Glennon:
NFL coaches, GM’s, Personnel Directors, Scouts, and Fellow Players are the people that say good things about him and his ability to be a very good NFL QB and help a team win.
The people that say bad things about him and his ability – The Fans

tgreg is on point. how hilarious would it be for Glennon to carve us up for the next 10 years as we have high draft picks each year. we’re a farm team for other teams to pluck talent from. lol

  16. WS99 Says:

    Robert
My friend from Boston calls us the pats farm team.

  17. Robert 9 Says:

LOL WS99. true, so true. Bilicheat’s face lights up when he sees 813 area code.

at least domenic got something in return

  18. WS99 Says:

I’ll say it again. I don’t think the MGM believes Glennon is a probowler or a superstar. We do believe he is/was the best qb on the roster, has a good arm and is smart enough to protect the ball. World-class athlete? Absolutely not but he does put us in a position to win.

He played well in NO and had us in the game with 31 points. He came back on Minn w 13 points scored in the 4th. He beat Pitt obviously. He sucked against the Browns and the Ravens game was over before it started so NO he is NOT a goat. He is however the best we got. considering no one wants to play for the bucs (i.e having to overpay FAs) I would work with what I have. But what do I know?

  19. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

    Mike Glennon vs Winston.

    LMAO.

  20. CP80 Says:

Mike Glennon to New England for a 4th round pick

  21. CP80 Says:

    You heard it here first

  22. WS99 Says:

Furthermore, I don’t know of any qb who has had 3 diff coaches in his first 3 years that didn’t completely suck (I’m sure you’ll correct me). My point is that MGM is not set up for huge failure. Koetter will have to use the hurry up 99% of the time and keep him in the shotgun 100% of the time for MGM to shine.

I would treat him as if I had Peyton on the team meaning a slow, unathletic qb who is smart and can throw the ball. We got ALOT of work to do. ALOT.

Oh yea, my bad I forgot the rookie qb is going to come in and win 9 games. My bad I forgot.

  23. WS99 Says:

    *Not = now

  24. SteveK Says:

Glennon has more adversity to overcome, I’m excited for this kid. He’s going to be a good one for us.

    Schiano knows talent.

  25. Robert 9 Says:

winston is the savior, dontcha know!

him or mariota and this team will be a dynasty.

    It’a ALL about the QB!

They carry the teams on their back to the superbowl!

especially the rookie ones with no O line.

    shall I carry on?

  26. WS99 Says:

You guys get this “spam error 3.4 message” below?

  27. Robert 9 Says:

joe flacco, andrew luck, peyton manning etc, etc…

all goofy lookin mofo’s with a fire in their belly

I’ll take that all day and twice on sunday than some prodigy with an ego and character issues or some project thats brittle

  28. feelthepewterpower Says:

McCown is a class act.. I don’t think the Buccs feel the same about Glennon as do many fans, but we’ll see..

  29. Hawk Says:

The ‘dark horse’ in the QB search is Denver. They know that Manning won’t play much longer. They might make a run at a high pick or try to trade for a young QB who might fit their system.

  30. WS99 Says:

Hopefully next weeks combine will shine some more light on the situation.

  31. Barry Says:

You people need to understand what’s coming, and what’s coming is MG8 as your starting QB. If anything, Mariota will be drafted and will sit behind Glennon and learn the NFL. #TheCreepyCrab is done, noway he’s coming to Tampa. #RealityCheck for you Winston marks. What is it that you don’t understand?

  32. Bucfan4life Says:

Wow, i guess you guys are just so used to bad QB play you will settle for anyone. Out of the top 40 QBs in the league you know how many had a QB rating than “the cannon?” 30!!! He beat out a couple of rookies and none other than the guy none other than Nick Foles. Many of you guys want to trade down to the 20th spot to get that guy. 30 out of 40 folks. That’s why he didn’t see the field again last year. He’s just not that good. His QB rating was right in line with most of the back up QBs on that list. That is all he is.

  33. BFFL Says:

I doubt Lovie wants to start a rookie QB. This is why Mariota is more appealing. People will buy the line that Mariota needs time to develop while Glennon starts the season. On the other hand, people will so foolishly expect that Winston is ready to start and never except anything less.

  34. feelthepewterpower Says:

On the other hand, people will so foolishly expect that Winston is ready to start and never except anything less.

    ———————————

If we draft a rookie qb, regardless of who it is, they won’t be starting week one.

  35. Eric Says:

Josh also said he still likes and respects Lovie.

Quite the contrast to the vile remarks hurled at the guy around here.

  36. Biff Barker Says:

    Vile remarks about Lovie?

Since when does the word suck mean vile?

  37. lord cornelius Says:

    @ Mr Patrick

Do any coaches / GMS / etc usually talk trash about QBs they are asked about from other teams?

Of course not. They kiss every Qb’s ass. I’m sure there are positives from a lot of GMs and coaches on a bunch of random backups and 3rd stringers in the league

  38. lord cornelius Says:

Also is anyone else confused about the mike glennon “arm talent”?

The guy underthrew a lot of deep balls in the games I watched. Luckily we had a 6’5 WR who could jump up and catch them but for him supposing to have a big arm he only had ac ouple prettty deep balls by my count (the main one I can think of was to Loius Murphy against the Lions where he actually hit a WR in stride)

  39. WS99 Says:

Funny. The only person that can/should get bashed on this team is Glennon. Everybody else is a great person/player. Lovie is great, mccown is the greatest person ever meanwhile were 2-14 and it Glennon that sucks. Okay whatever you say.

  40. MadMax Says:

@lord, if he’s under throwing, then why are you pointing out Evans lucky enough to be 6’5 and jumping up to catch? :/ Did you mean over thrown?

  41. lord Says:

Mad Max. Underthrown and talking about what I saw all of 2013; when vjax would have to come back to the ball and out jump the other teams corner or safety to keep it from being an interception

  42. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Drew Brees

    “Dante Fowler at DE”

Yeah baby. Local guy makes good! The best St. Pete football player since Sean King.

  43. lurker Says:

I’m not against keeping Glennon, with Koetter as OC. Hell, trade the 1st pick to Cleveland for their #12, #19, 2nd, and 3rd, or even better Alex Mack. We could fill the OL, DE, and MLB holes, then get a vet QB like Hasselbeck in FA, and work on depth after that. Does that make too much sense?

  44. StPeteBucsFan Says:

As for Glennon. He is not that bad! He needs an OL to perform however.

Yes he is a statue. He can ran any faster than most of us. People want to call him a coward because he didn’t sell out on that ONE play. But he took his beatings behind horrid line play and kept his eyes down field.

When he is given time, and I acknowledge that’s a big challenge for the Bucs, he is a solid QB. His smarts are off the charts and his arm strength is adequate.

He’s not a world beater, but he doesn’t suck either. He clearly could play as well as Brad Johnson if he continues to progress and much, much better than Trent Dilfer. But I agree he’s not going to carry a team by himself.

  45. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Wow lurker that’s thinking outside the Jameis box. And you know I can’t say I disagree if we could get all of that.

Alas the Browns owner just said it’s too early to give up on Johnny Football. Then again what else can he say? LMAO.

Perhaps he could invite Joe out for drinks and they could both drown the Johnny flash in the pan sorrow.

  46. Mr. Patrick Says:

    http://espn.go.com/espn/fp/flashPollResultsState?sportIndex=nfl&pollId=4702384

    Mariota even wins Florida, lol

  47. Barry Says:

Lovie is your HC. Glennon your QB. Like it or find another team to complain about. IMO.

  48. JSmalls Says:

Robert, by ‘fire in the belly’ you mean constantly scrabbling and stepping out-of-bounds one yard short?

  49. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Jsmalls

constantly scrabbling and stepping out-of-bounds one yard short?

Constantly? I call hyperbole. There was that game where he did it in an obvious situation where he should have gone for it. It’s a tough choice for QB’s however.
When do you place your body at risk. It’s always a risk/reward thing for QB’s.

If we draft Mariota watch everybody complain if he runs and gets hurt.

The implication of course is that Glennon doesn’t have cojones. That’s simply absurd. He stood tall in the pocket and took his beating just like Josh. Whatever you can say about our QB’s last year nobody can call them out for cowardice playing behind our OL. They both took their share of beatings.

  50. SOEbuc Says:

MGMs heatin up!!! Im starting to get more excited thinking of trading down and MG playing 2015. THE FUTURE IS NOW

  51. mikeh Says:

@robert9- exactly LMAO that’s what these bozo#5 lovers think! he is the best of the best PLEASE!!!!!! he is just a rookie! and he will get his lumps for sure. talk to us about it in a year or so then we will see. that’s if he doesn’t get kicked out of the NFL first.

  52. SOEbuc Says:

Try to trade down within top 6 and try to pick up williams, gregory, or fowler and picks

  53. lurker Says:

  55. Bucs4lyfe Says:

    @Greg Schiano

glennon is garbage and your still protecting him after he got you fired lol. pathetic a guy could throw 50 times and end up with like 200 yards and you actually think he is some kind of prodigy. get it together people because whoever we draft will beat out glennon because if im gonna get fired im atleast i’ll be saying to the owners look what I did, we drafted a franchise quarterback and chances are he’d play just as good if not better than glennon. truth be told with as bad as the offensive line is what makes glennon any better than a rookie, he cant move it’s like watching paint dry and atleast we know that whatever rookie we draft can make up for what he doesn’t know in his head with his feet something glennon will never be able to do

  56. Bucs4lyfe Says:

lol you guys are sad…..here it is the third straight offseason and every year you think glennon is the guy until training camp gets here. when are you gonna learn because the writing was on the wall ever since the 4th preseason game of his career. he was getting starter like reps in training camp and he camp out playing like trash….damn cartoon character he sucks

  57. mark2001 Says:

I think Glennon was shelved for a number of reasons…

    1. Lovie made promises to McCown and tried to keep his word to give him a chance to be the number 1.

    2. The O line needed a year…a bad line can get a young QB “gun shy”, destroy his confidence, and have him develop bad habits,

    3. No Offensive coordinator, to adjust to D’s and help a young QB deal with what D’s were doing to him….and likely the coordinator didn’t even know what was going on.

    4. Winning one or two more games wouldn’t have done anything for us.

    5. We were between offensive systems, with no one really knowing the basis of the philosophy, or being able to explain it to Glennon.

Frankly, playing Glennon more would have likely been the worst thing for his future and the future of the team…it was really one of the short list of things they did right last year. Not saying Glennon is better than one of the top two prospects this year. But he isn’t nearly as bad as some believe.

  58. Bucs4lyfe Says:

if you have to put a qb on the shelf because you have a bad offense line then your simply saying he’s garbage

So it was my intention to just stay quiet this thread, but this comment changes all that:

Where do you see the fire in Glennon’s belly? Was it the constant underthrows or the time he ran out of bounds instead of going for the first down?

That’s the biggest issue I have with Glennon is that I DON’T see that fire. If he would show some of that, i could comfortably get behind him, but i have YET to see it.

The difference is that the QBs job is to stand tall in the pocket and stare down the barrell. You shouldn’t have to have balls to do your job. The balls come in when you’re asked to do something outside of the scope of your work and put your team on your back. THAT’S the issue i had with him not going for the first down.

Look, if Glennon does wind up being our QB next year, then I’m MGM all day. I would never root for my team to fail. With that being said, Glennon hasn’t shown me enough to believe that he’s the right QB for my favorite team. If the guys that get paid to make that decision wind up doing so, then i will accept it.
