“I Didn’t Even Get Coached Up Like I Should Have Got Coached Up”

February 23rd, 2015

WinstonMariota

What exactly was Jameis Winston talking about Saturday on NFL Network?

Winston sat down alongside fellow quarterback prospect Marcus Mariota and NFL Network personalities and was asked about the interview process by Charles Davis. Winston gave a detailed answer but dropped a somewhat bizarre line about getting coached/not coached for the private sessions with teams.

Here’s the exchange:

Charles Davis: Do you think you both accomplished what you needed to accomplish, you Jameis interview-wise, teams grilling you?

Jameis Winston: I believe I accomplished what I needed to do. Because, you know, I just came in trying to be real, you know, be as genuine as possible. Real recognizes real. So if you’re talking to a grown man, you’re just being straight up up front with him, you know accepting the past but telling him you’re just trying to earn his trust, I mean you can’t do nothing but respect that.

Davis: How tough was it during that time? Did it get really tough at all in the interview room, or was it pretty straight-forward?

Winston: It wasn’t tough at all. Like I said, I was being real. I wasn’t trying to put on no show or anything. I didn’t even get coached up like I should have got coached up. You know, I just took responsibility for everything and I just was real.

So was Winston annoyed by his handlers not coaching him up properly? Or was Winston referring to shunning coaching by his representatives and just trying to be himself?

Joe’s not sure what’s better.

Draft genius and Packers general manager Ted Thompson made an interesting point last week about prospects getting heavily coached up for pre-draft interviews. Thompson said he’s good with it because it shows a player is coachable, a key component to NFL success.

    Keep talking Jameis…..wiggling in quicksand

  2. Rodney Says:

He meant he didn’t elect to get coached up to have the “right” answers, he just wanted to respond in a way to keep it “real.”

That’s what he meant, if that was for show I don’t know, but his idea was he doesn’t have anything to hide if he’s just truthful – which requires no “coaching up”.

  3. briandorry55 Says:

Clearly he was saying that he didn’t spend a bunch of time learning how to impress in the interviews like most prospects do…like he said, he was just himself.

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Rodney

Thanks for the translation….glad someone understood…..perhaps you can sign on as the Winston interpreter if he is drafted…..you can work side by side with the mentor.

  5. Luther Says:

I liked that part of the interview. I hate it when guys give canned robotic answers. I’m sure the “Face of the franchise” bit was preached to him but he was very off the cuff and that was what I wanted to see.

  6. MTM Says:

Can’t wait to hear Winston scream “I’m just going to keep real”. Winston should be happy Dave Chappelle doesn’t have a show any longer. He may have made an episode or two.

  7. Eric Says:

Obvious he was saying he didn’t get help on his answers.

However, he must communicate enough for several NFL scouts to say he has the smartest football IQ since Manning, and for Mooch to say he the smartest one he has ever interviewed.

He knocked the interviews out of the park all on his own.

Excellent work Mr. Winston. As NFL.com said today it is a virtual certainty he will be a buc.

Gonna be a great day April 30th.

  8. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

Nobody coached Jameis on his table top,”F in the pu**y”, extemporaneous rant either….the guy has more red flags than a Cold War Russian military parade…

  9. dan Says:

    Trade down and play Glennon!

  10. Couch Fan Says:

Bucs have a big red flag on their helmet. So Famous will fit right in. Welcome to Tampa Jameis!!

  11. kaput Says:

    JoeJoes,

    That’s a bit vulgar, don’t you think.

Not for the “Jamarcus”, “rapist”, “thug” crowd, Eric. For them, it’ll be a tear in their beer kind of day.

  13. Luther Says:

@JoeJoes I was in the Navy and I can assure you that I saw grown men do MUCH worse that that. The rape allegation was serious, no doubt about it, but the guy was basically cleared. What more do you want?

“just trying to earn his trust” and not putting up a show or sth?

okay, i think we can´t say anthing about wether its plain BSing or not because we weren´t interviewing him like the teams.

Winston helping someone in a wheelchair, winston having a pastor/mentor
    – sorry i can´t help, but that sounds like… like a 90 year old women with way to much make-up in her face and saying she´s a teeny.

to make it clear: i sure hope he means it and is wants to become a better person and so on – tahts perfectly fine

at the same time: i just dislike drafting him #1 overall – even he would be the nicest person on earth – simply because of on-field skills/traits

  16. Eric Says:

Smartest EVER. Manning like in terms of intelligence.

Man that just rankles the haters to no end.

    Go Jaboo.

  17. Robert 9 Says:

being real, real recognizes real…. LOL

man I wish Chappelle was still on air. could just see a skit on winston when keeping it real goes wrong. lol

  18. Robert 9 Says:

telling people your just trying to earn their trust is like a sales person saying let me be honest with you.

it implies you are lying the rest of the time

  19. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

    I love Big Dog…..

  20. Robert 9 Says:

    sorry, still laughing.

can’t believe anyone would go into an interview and be like “I just keep it real” …….trust me, it’s not like I have a history of theft.

RFLMAO………sorry, this whole thing made me laugh.

go jaboo, keep on keepin it real

  21. Luther Says:

Big Dog having a fit over the mock drafts. For him, Winston did nothing over the weekend and he is in denial.

  22. MTM Says:

    Exactly!

your only forgiven if your rothleisberger’s skin color and you had to actually settled out of court and paid the victim, that’s the rich white man’s version of no consent (not guilty nor innocent). cleared of all charges for a black man in the public eye gets you all this hateful crap you got right here on joebucsfan. you don’t even realize the perception half of you put out there when you say the negative things you say about him and you think because you disagree with someone saying your racist and you laugh it off that it’s brushed aside but you wont give the man credit for what he did on the field, you wont give him credit for what he’s done in the classroom lol you tell me what else it could be then

“Real recognizes real” if you know what that means then you understand why he is saying I didn’t need to be coached up…in the military it’s like calling privates a penguin because they all look alike and fall in line, I find it refreshing that he is running his mouth this way because he has no choice but to back it up

  25. Evo Says:

Hey joe. just wanted to say thanks for not letting that blowhard in the afternoon push you around on the air. He just comes across as a big bully on air. You make good points and when he has no reply for it he just resorts to name calling or deflects. Keep it up joe.

Keep it up for us who he’s hung up on or blocked from the text line to the entire station just because our views are different than his and we can agrue with valid points.

He will agrue with the non intelligent fans all day on the air because he can make them look foolish. But the smart fans (yes I consider you a fan joe) he wants no part of. I hear you cater to him because it’s his show. I understand that. But keep standing up joe.

Maybe one day we can get JP back in the bay area in his slot. I miss the days off afternoon radio where you could disagree with the host and not get yelled at or hung up on. THE ONLY TIME I LISTEN TO HIM IS WHEN YOU AND LANDRY ARE ON.

  26. Rodney Says:

    @Tampabaybucfan

In the video of what he said the meaning as clear, I’m sort of surprised anyone wouldn’t get his point. In text it sounds a bit odd since it can be interpreted as he was whining perhaps, but that clearly wasn’t what he meant. Find the video of that segment and its obvious, there is no other way to interrupt what he said when you see it fully in context.

  27. Yungry Says:

Let’s keep it real, he was a 1 year wonder. Its alarming to be inconsistent when you only play 2 years…

  28. Celly Says:

Its so funny to see so many different takes on one statement.

    Here’s how I took it:

I expected there to be more questions about me playing football. Actually going through all the Xs and Os…you know, more coaching questions”

But guess what, guys….Since none of us were in the room, we have NO idea what was said or what was actually meant by the statement.

So i guess the fact that his numbers compare to Luck’s first 2 years means nothing, right?

  30. LutzBuczFan Says:

  31. Yungry Says:

    @ Celly,

    Listed below are Luck’s stats:
    *2010 Stanford Pac-10 SO QB 13 263 372 70.7 3338 9.0 9.7 32 8 170.2
    *2011 Stanford Pac-12 SR QB 13 288 404 71.3 3517 8.7 9.4 37 10 169.7

Thats right 69 touchdowns to 18 interceptions when Jameis threw 28 touchdowns to 18 interceptions in 1 year… Nice try though…Like I said 1 year wonder

  32. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

Was Jameis accepted to Stanford U, or Samford U….

  33. pick6 Says:

it was pretty obvious to me that he was implying that he had no interest in practicing to be somebody other than the person the team drafting him was going to get. the timing of the accusation going public meant that FSU kept him away from interviews whenever they possibly could last season, and so people were left to extrapolate from news reports and game broadcasts who he was. i’m glad he’s finally getting a chance to show his intelligence and charisma now that teams are meeting him directly, and kudos to him for not trying to be a robot or a glossy advertisement.

  34. bucs4lyfe Says:

lol no one really wonders why derrick brooks speaks so slow and calm, he’s got a hood side none of you ever get to see….he was tight with warren sapp so don’t you think he can speak that lingo, he’s country and from Alabama and he’s about to be a 21 year old millionaire whether he’s drafted 1st or 6th it doesn’t really matter. he’s a football player and it’s a school yard game everyone wish they could make a living playing if they could.

this is amazing lol just imagine a state ranked like 28 in education making fun of a guys speech lol this is hilarious

  35. pick6 Says:

i’m not sure rehearsing a few talking points tells you anything about these guys’ (winston, mariota, or anybody else) coachability that their ability to execute game plans every week or their willingness to work intensively with passing coaches doesn’t tell you. i’m more interested in the new mechanics mariota mastered in a short time or the more compact throwing motion JW showed off than how well they read their agents’ script.

  36. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Rodney

Talk to Joe too…..here is what Joe had to say in the article….

“What exactly was Jameis Winston talking about Saturday on NFL Network?”

And Joe is very pro Winston…in case you haven’t noticed….

Most of you guys do come off just sounding racist. Its too bad after all is said is done you cant get your head out of your @ss and stop harping on the rapist, ghetto speaking, shoptlifting, cussing diatribes. Not charged with rape. Can chose to speak any way he prefers. (See Richard Sherman who writes and graduated from Stanford but still speaks like that during games). Screwed up with the crab legs. And yes I know its a shock but at 21 yr old that actually uses bad words. Gawd, I hope you never run into Chucky around town. How about we start discussing meanigful not hateful subjects.

    Speaking for Pablo

“Pablo has a think skin when it comes to racial remarks. TBBF has constantly poked fun at Pablo and Pablo just sits back and takes it….because Pablo has confidence in himself and knows TBBF is full of $hit most of the time”

  40. Yungry Says:

    @ Celly,

Are you really going to compare Andrew Luck to JW? FYI, Luck had 12 ints in 2 years where as JW had 28…That is more than half if your math skills are up to par… No matter what you say Winston was a 1 year wonder and Luck was NOT! Just keeping it real playa… You can’t make this stuff up

  41. Luther Says:

I used to talk just like Winston and I was always in the highest classes in school. It takes time to remove what you know. So many of you are sitting on your high horses and I bet that kid is smarter than most of his critics.

  43. Tampabaybucfan Says:

To debate rape allegations on JBF are absurd…but I suspect it won’t stop because that appears to be all some want to bring forward.

It bothers me as a Mariota supporter to see other Mariota supporters use it because it wasn’t proven and probably never will be.

I am sure that the allegation will cost Winston dearly with endorsements and he will forever be convicted by some of the public.

I think Joe would be perfectly within reason if (after warning) he kicked the accusers off the site. I am not sure that you can be held civilly liable for slander of a public figure while posting anonymously on a website…..but common decency calls for restraint.

As well as his critics’ kids.

  46. Celly Says:

@TBBF…While we may not agree on most, at least you will usually put forward a decent argument, so let me ask you this…

Why is it that Mariota supporters are quick to point out Jameis’ INTs but refuse to acknowledge Mariota’s fumbles?

  49. Skyline Crew Says:

    @Celly,

Luck’s first two years was as follows:

    2009: 12 games with a TD/INT ratio of 13/4
    2010: 13 games with a TD/INT ratio of 32/8

So his first two years are 25 games with a ratio of 45/12.

    Winston’s two years:

    2013: 14 games with a TD/INT ratio of 40/10
    2014: 13 games with a TD/INT ratio of 25/18

So his first two years are 27 games with a ratio of 65/28.

What are we comparing? Because their first two years aren’t comparable.

  50. Robert 9 Says:

    @ bucs4lyfe

you really need to use that card less often, it’s getting worn.

  51. Robert 9 Says:

I bet he is better at football and baseball then most of his critics.

maybe smarter than a good amount, but in the common sense category he falls well below average.

  52. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Celly

I’m not sure…..I can only speak for myself…..I don’t know how many of the fumbles were on his running plays…I think he ran over 300 times for 2200+ yds in 3 years.

I also think fumbles may be easier to solve than interceptions…

I, myself have never pointed out the interceptions as a problem. I am satisfied completely with his on-field capabilities.

My concern is what happens when you give an immature person a bunch of money?…..There is an old saying…”Nothing is worse with money”….I’m not so sure in this case….but its just a questionmark.

I would rather take the risk that it might take time to develop Mariota…than take the risk that Winston will somehow repeat his behavior. He will be under such a microscope.

I actually think the problem with Winston is that he wants to be loved by everyone and that he is constantly showing-off….if that is the case, that’s OK by me because that will mean he has a strong desire to win!!!

  53. Celly Says:

    smh…

    Completion %:
    Winston – 66.0
    Luck – 63.5

    Passing yards:
    Winston – 7,964
    Luck – 5,913

    Passer rating:
    Winston – 165.2
    Luck – 156.9

    TD:
    Winston – 65
    Luck – 45

    INT:
    Winston – 28
    Luck – 12

    Yard per attempt:
    Winston – 9.5
    Luck – ~9

But i guess we’ll ignore all those stats since they don’t back up your argument, right?

If Winston had a sh*t-ton of INTs coupled with a bunch of losses, then it’s something i would be worried and/or concerned about; but the fact of the matter is that he still managed to pull out wins despite his high INT rate.

  54. Skyline Crew Says:

Oh I see. So based off stats you are saying Winston is better than Luck. Gotcha ya. Why didn’t you just say that.

  55. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

Since when does it take being “coached up” to answer some simple questions? I could understand maybe being schooled on professional etiquette but who needs to be “coached” to answer a question?

  56. Celly Says:

LOL…you mean those same stats that you use to show how much worse than Luck he is????

Funny how that works, isn’t it.

Not once did i ever say that he’s better than Luck. All I have ever contended is that he’s not as far beneath Luck as most people would like to claim. People want to bring up stats only when it fits their argument.

  57. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank

It’s not “coached up” it’s being “lawyered up”…..I’m quite certain that Winston’s civil lawyer schooled him on not answering any questions…..”Looking to the future….past is the past”…etc.
I can’t imagine what it would have been like to be asked specific questions…..he would have to plead the 5th….embarrassing…..
I’m not saying he shouldn’t have been advised….to the contrary…he would truly be a fool if he didn’t.
There still may be a civil case against him even if it’s to try to achieve a settlement.

  58. Lovie equals 2015 Blackouts Says:

Hey… I don’t care if he speaks gorilla… as long as he wins football games then that should be all that matters.

I mean take Warren Sapp… he was a horrible person… but a great DT. Now he’s a bankrupted hall of famer who help steer the Bucs to a Super Bowl.

    I good with all that.

I feel it. It is real yall. Wins trump interviews and character. Bring us a title JW. Its real now.

  59. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

I could imagine it going something like this, lmao:

Coach: “Now, you see here Jameis, what you’re gonna do is you’re gonna answer some questions today, a good bit of questions.”

    Winston: “Ight.”

Coach: “Alright, so what I want you to do is just go out there, all smiles, and calmly answer them questions to the best of your ability. Try to be laid back and answer bluntly.”

    Winston: “Yes sir.”

Coach: “Oh, now you see that poor bastard over there with the craft beer in his hands? Poor guy runs a site covering them Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Now he’s probably gonna ask you about playing baseball, what I want you to do is dodge that and talk about football, you know, reassure ’em but don’t give a straight answer, okay son?”

    Winston: “Okay.”

Coach: “Oh, and one last thing, if you are unfortunately drafted by them Buccaneers, you may wanna file a restraining order on that fellow, cause he’s had bedroom eyes on ya since you walked in.”

    🙂

  60. greg Says:

Over this past week, I have decided that I really want the Bucs to take someone else or trade the pick

  61. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

    @TBBF

Understood, and that makes sense, but to me it isn’t a big deal that Jameis answered well in the interviews. It’s not hard to answer simple questions about playing football, and not hard to say “no comment” to the difficult ones. He’s talked to the press before.

  62. greg Says:

can’t compare the QB position with Sapp….completely different mindset…someone with Sapp’s charcter or poor decision making skills would have failed as a QB also….when you are a DL there are different tools that you use as opposed to being a QB

  63. Celly Says:

    @MOWOWP

Do you truly believe that it would be OK for a prospect to say, “No comment” during their one on one interviews?

To me, that would be an even bigger red flag than anything else.

  64. stratobuc Says:

That’s funny Greg, I just decided over the past week that the Bucs should take Winston. I think he’s going to win some games, so he might as well win them here.

  65. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

    @Celly

Well, let’s say someone brought up the rape allegations, I could easily see him going “no comment” on that. That’s what I meant.

And honestly, that’s about the only real “no comment” question I can think for him. Questions about football, baseball, and his character should be able to be easily answered.

Again, I don’t see the big deal.

  66. LutzBuczFan Says:

I, too, think Winston is the better QB and hope we draft him for the success of our team.

  67. Todd Kiper Says:

All he meant was he was being genuine….there was nothing contrived. Anyone reading into this to say that he’s obviously not coach able is not paying attention. That white board session with Mooch is indicative of how coachable and intelligent he really is

  68. LargoBuc Says:

I imagine he was coached up to play it off like he wasn’t coached up.

Since you like to tell other people to selectively look up stats to prove your point then don’t tell others to! Why can’t we compare Luck/Winston’s last 2 years of college, because it’ll prove your point wrong? How about we look up career college stats from Mariota, Winston and Luck….That way we look at all the years not your selected years. As Jameis would say:Keep it Real

  70. Dr Feelgood Says:

JoeJoesFunginails. Get a grip dude! Your hate runs deep, and if you listen to the tone of all of the GMs/former GMs, coaches/former coaches, and analysts, it’s SO obvious that Winston is the pick!! WHEN we take him, please either denounce your supposed love for the Bucs or stop with the hate, toward Jameis and toward Joe. The analysts keep saying that Mariotta will thrive if Chip Kelly can trade up to get him and how giddy the Eagles will be. They are not saying that about ANY other team. Why? Because he is a system QB that killed it in that system!! I know we will take Winston, and I hope the Eagles get Mariotta, because if anyone else does, he won’t be anything but a backup for the majority of his career. Unless someone can wait three years for the hope a return on investment. I love the guy’s clean rep, but I don’t see it translating into success in the NFL anytime soon. I’d love to know, and I admit that I don’t, how many 4th quarter comebacks Mariotta has compared to WIN-ston. If anyone does know, please post it.

If you think you saw the interview, you’re wrong. …some of it may have been to see if how he handled it – not just in a particular team meeting – but to see if some of their questions made it to the press?

…but it may also be a bit more showmanship…trying to make it seem like he could have gotten coached up, but he wanted teams to know he was going to be the “real” Kid Fameis…no matter what…

Get used to the way he talks guys because he will be talking like that in the post game press conferences as a QB for Tampa Bay.

  76. mikeh Says:

I like his football skills but no I don’t like him as person. as he said himself he will have to earn trust and respect. even though he comes off cocky and its all about me thing he is a good football player and if bucs draft him so be it I will still root for the bucs. but yes as of right now! I admit it ! I DO NOT LIKE HIM AS A PERSON.

  77. ddneast Says:

This is a big positive. Joe’s boy Manzell got coached up last year to the point Jerry Jones wanted to draft him. We know what happened there.
Getting coached up for an interview sounds to me like you are just trying to con people with answers you don’t believe in but know that is what people want to hear.

  78. Bucfan31 Says:

You don’t even know him as a person so how can you not like him lol. All you know is what you hear and see on TV. It just baffles me how much hate people have this man and they don’t know him. Let’s look at it this way, Winston brings a swagger, leadership and confidence that we have never had at QB! He makes everybody around him better and he plays his ass off. I’m tired as a fan to see the Bucs go the conservative route every and we continue to lose. Let’s take a chance for once and see where it takes us. Because we have tried the team captains, choir boys already and it hasn’t worked out!

Choose wisely L&L. Immaturity = Red Flag

But in the end, the saying goes “the definition of insanity is continuing to do the same exact thing and expect different results.” This certainly applies to NFL Draft when it comes to immature quarterbacks. Teams have thought for decades that they can change the course of the unfledged signal-callers. But by all means they shouldn’t really rely on history to pick their possible faces of their franchise. Right?

Joe: Just before you post another JW article, please think of your guy from last year, JM. Just sayin.

    Sayin, what?

    BTW, LOVE Johnny!

  82. Pat Says:

    LOL. 🙂

  83. Mariota Joe Says:

Have to agree….Joe your JM stance last year must be taken into consideration as we digest your JW stance this year. And JW’s statement above is all well and good until……….he says “like I should have got coached up”

  84. mikeh Says:

ok bucfan31 then I just don’t trust him. yes because of what he has done and may do. not saying he does not deserve a chance. just saying from what I have read and seen on tv! and it is not like its a bunch of lies he really did some crap and not to long ago and now he may be a #1 pick. it should make anybody nervous. there is a couple red flags anytime people talk red flags you have to be concerned . its the #1 pick not some 7th rounder you can say ahh give it a try what we have to lose. JUST SAYING.
