Dirk Koetter And “Inferior Players”
February 2nd, 2015The Super Bowl is over and the New England Schianos were victorious, but Joe still has all kinds of Bucs-related goodies to share from his journey to Phoenix.
The latest comes from a four-time Pro Bowl quarterback who is a big fan of new Bucs offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter.
Joe got a chance to chat privately with Rich Gannon, who does game-analyst work and is a daily host on Sirius XM NFL Radio. One topic was Koetter and how his offense might look with Tampa Bay.
Gannon said Koetter will mesh well with Lovie Smith’s desire to be a running football team in the mold of the Seahawks and Panthers.
“I think he believes in solid fundamental football,” Gannon said of Koetter. I think he wants to run the ball, play-action is going to be a big part of it, and he’s a guy that can tailor his system to the strengths of the personnel that he has.”
“I’ve always admired the work that he’s done. I think he did a great job, if you really study him down in Jacksonville, with some inferior players.”
For Joe, it was very encouraging to hear Gannon’s enthusiasm for Koetter. Gannon’s hardly a rah-rah guy. Remember, Joe already shared how sour Gannon is on Jameis Winston.
Also noteworthy is that Gannon doesn’t think Koetter is coming to Tampa to install some form of a Chip Kelly offense to suit Marcus Mariota.
Gannon came back to Koetter’s time in Jacksonville with David Garrard. Koetter had a top-10 offense there and hung on for five seasons, about double the shelf life for a typical NFL offensive coordinator.
“Oh, my gosh. And he lasted there for years,” Gannon said of Koetter. Not only did he last [in Jacksonville], you talk to guys like Matt Ryan, they really enjoyed working with him. And he had success in the short time with Matt. He’s well respected in league circles.”
The Bucs made a good hire in Koetter. Joe sincerely hopes Lovie hands Koetter the keys to the bus and doesn’t try to drive.

“Joe sincerely hopes Lovie hands Koetter the keys to the bus and doesn’t try to drive.”
Yes Joe let’s hope Lovie stays far away from him, or that would be Schiano-like.
February 2nd, 2015 at 10:49 am
Winton is the only one that fits this bill
February 2nd, 2015 at 10:52 am
Regardless of the offensive scheme, the team badly needs to remake the O-line. That should be priority 1. A good running game and a great defense. That’s the recipe.
February 2nd, 2015 at 11:04 am
Lovie is already micromanaging the guy. The hiring of Bajakin (sp?) is clear evidence of that. Lovie just hiring another Chicago guy. GTFOH Lovie, let the offensive coordinator hire his own staff. Retaining/hiring your guys is completely foolish and shows what a ancient coaching philosophy you have. Setting Koetter and this team up for failure here, and its too bad. Maybe when the Glazer’s hire a new HC next year things will get better…
February 2nd, 2015 at 11:05 am
The BUCS are going to take their Buccaneer Man with their first pick
Winston be be > Mariota on the field
but you have to look at this as who would you rather be married to for the next Ten years and who do you trust with your $100 million that you are going to give him.
Glazers have shown a cautious history here.
(See how Josh#5 was NOT given his $100 million contract)
Mariota is the SAFE, if not better, “Franchise/Face of the Team” Option
February 2nd, 2015 at 11:09 am
Josh Freeman was better than Marcus Mariota.
The end.
February 2nd, 2015 at 11:10 am
Michael Pittman beat the hell out of his wife….
The end.
February 2nd, 2015 at 11:27 am
But the Bucs already had Pittman…..they don’t have to take Winston.
February 2nd, 2015 at 11:34 am
Fire lovie and promote koetter
February 2nd, 2015 at 11:34 am
Running game featuring who exactly?
One of the things I liked about the falcons offense was that they could (at times) effectively use 3 or 4 running backs between Jackson Freeman Rodgers and Smith.
We seem to have a decent stable with Martin Sims Rainey and James but we need to find somebody to block for these guys
February 2nd, 2015 at 11:40 am
RayRay…..the point is I don’t think the Glazers really care as much as the liberals think they do.
Warren Sapp had drug rumors coming out of college as well.
February 2nd, 2015 at 11:44 am
The Bucs should be embarrassed to call themselves a football team after watching the superbowl last night. We don’t have a football team.
But it was nice to see so many Former Bucs get a super bowl ring.

Really… You want us to waste a #1 overall pick because you’re hung up on his cute lilte face and we can march him out there to smile. Seriously… Give me the guy that will smack you in the face. Need someome who hates losing more than he likes winning. When Mariota washes out all of you will beat the crap out of the Bucs for Reaching for him just as you will for them taking Winston. Bucs are in a No Win situation because most people lack common sense and logical thinking. You can’t win the Lottery if you’re scared to play!

————————————————
They didnt give Freeman his money because Freeman sucked from his 3rd year on and only got worse with time. There was also rumors that may or may not have been true so i wont get into that but thats a completely different situation. Sure Mariota would make a better face of the franchise if you dont care about little things like… idk actually winning football games?
February 2nd, 2015 at 12:03 pm
Im off topic but have any of you guys read about joe’s boyfriend manziel being in re-hab
February 2nd, 2015 at 12:04 pm
@Couch
Free had franchise records his 4th year.
Not so sure you can call that sucking…
February 2nd, 2015 at 12:24 pm
@celly
the whole league was breaking passing yard records.
1 guy in the 5000 passing yards, Free was 9th with his franchise passing yeards that year! And there were 17 QBs that threw over 3500 yards that year!!!
February 2nd, 2015 at 12:26 pm
@77bassguitarist Says:
Yes. I posted the link above. Easiest way I can think of to chose a QB is to go against whoever Joe wants for us
February 2nd, 2015 at 12:34 pm
@ gatrbuc…lol bro i totally agree
February 2nd, 2015 at 12:42 pm
@ TBR
So, because other QBs in the league did well that year, Freeman’s accomplishments should be overlooked?
So, his franchise record for TDs probably shouldn’t matter either???
February 2nd, 2015 at 12:50 pm
Who’s this Freeman chick?
February 2nd, 2015 at 12:54 pm
@77bassguitarist I wonder if Lovie and Licht actually did like Manziel but were scared off by character concerns. Guy didn’t even get in a full year with the franchise, hopefully he gets his life straightened out.
February 2nd, 2015 at 1:06 pm
It doesn’t matter who the QB is or running backs are, if they don’t rebuild this offensive line they will stink again. Trade the #1 pick, pick up some additional picks and draft some young studs and dominators. They made a mess out of free agency last year so I don’t look for them to make the improvements there
February 2nd, 2015 at 1:09 pm
Free had franchise records his 4th year.
————————————–
By default because we have a history of horrible QBs. Records are stats and not necessarily impressive all by themself. He had a stretch of about 5 good games that year rest were garbage.
February 2nd, 2015 at 1:40 pm
100+ articles written about – Johnny College Football, Mike Mattress Williams, Shameis Loseton. Track record speaks volumes!

Sorry, Joe, but that doesn’t sound like Winston.
While I agree we won’t see a “Chip Kelly” offense, that’s not what Seattle runs, and I believe that is who Lovie wants to emulate.
Winston is a statue in the pocket. His game has one facet. Throw the ball.

Put on the breaks there, ’87!
Sapp was nothing like Winston. With Sapp, a rumor was started just before the draft that he smoked dope. It was put out there to make him drop. He has always….always denied it…and given how widely accepted weed is these days and the fact that he’s no longer playing, don’t you think he wouldn’t care if people knew he did it?
With Winston, it is not rumors. It is sexual assault. Big difference. It is theft. Big difference. It is lack of discipline.
Sapp had that one rumor. Winston has what? 5 accusations? Comparing the two is way off base.
February 2nd, 2015 at 1:49 pm
As to whether the Glazers care? Normally I would say they do…but given the last decade, they may be willing to take a chance. I’d give it 50-50 at this point as to what they are willing to do. In other words…impossible to predict.

They already have 11 picks this year. We can take out quarterback AND get offensive line. They would never draft more than two OL guys in rounds 1-4 anyway. We have 5 picks in the first 4 rounds.
Why get the icing alone when we can have the cake with it?

February 2nd, 2015 at 2:19 pm
I still think that if Lovie truly wants to emulate Seattle, Carolina and the 49ers I think we need a big bruising back in the mold of an Alstott.
February 2nd, 2015 at 2:48 pm
unbelievable Says
“@Bonzai, yes, but only 3 of those picks are in the top 3 rounds.”
Yep. And the majority of starting offensive linemen are picked round 3 or LATER. Take a look.
February 2nd, 2015 at 2:48 pm
@ Bonzai
Bucs have 8 picks
February 2nd, 2015 at 2:49 pm
No, Patrick. 11 picks.
February 2nd, 2015 at 2:52 pm
If yesterday’s game isn’t a perfect example of how coaches win and lose games more so than players then we are all blind bats. I don’t care if we draft Winston, Williams or mm. If lovie and his staff don’t get their chit together we’ll be 2-14 again next year. And yet again I am not impressed by any of his hires this year much less last years group of coaches.
Let’s see what garbage FA’s we sign. I think there’s another thirty something former probowler out there that needs a nice payday before retiring.
February 2nd, 2015 at 2:56 pm
@ Bonzai
So why not get the best lineman earlier in the draft? The Bucs drafted 2 mid/late round o-linemen last year and they both stink. Dom had the philosophy of not drafting o-lineman high in the draft and that’s why the Bucs have the o-line problems now
February 2nd, 2015 at 2:56 pm
Correction. 9 picks. We were both wrong.
Round 1 – Pick 1
Round 2 – Pick 2
Round 3 – Pick 1
Round 4 – Pick 2
Round 4 – Pick 10 (from Baron to Rams)
Round 5 – Pick 26 (from Ravens)
Round 6 – Pick 2
Round 6 – Pick 8 (from Rams)
Round 7 – Pick 1

Have you looked at Lovie’s record with drafting first round offensive linemen? Both were busts. He has had better results outside the first.
February 2nd, 2015 at 3:02 pm
I hate to break it to you guys, but even if we have the best oline in football, the quarterback can still blow games. You have to go QB, then build around him.
We already have all the pieces except offensive line and Quarterback. Unless we can acquire a good QB in free agency (and none are currently projected to be available) we need to get and develop our QB. It takes longer to develop QBs then it does OL.
We could take OL with the first pick, but after Winston and Mariota, there are no QBs coming out this year that are worth spit.
Take the QB, then take OL and safeties. Acquire a WR in FA, along with another starting OL and some depth.
February 2nd, 2015 at 3:03 pm
@ Bozai
I think I count 8
http://www.prosportstransactions.com/football/DraftTrades/Years/2015.htm
February 2nd, 2015 at 3:04 pm
And Joe is right one at least one thing…offensive linemen do not score touchdowns and lead a team to victory.
If we don’t get a QB, we can look forward to another losing season.
February 2nd, 2015 at 3:05 pm
Patrick, your source is wrong.
February 2nd, 2015 at 3:05 pm
Here…count them
http://walterfootball.com/nfldraftorder2015.php
February 2nd, 2015 at 3:11 pm
Only 8 picks. We only have one pick in the 4th not 2.
February 2nd, 2015 at 3:12 pm
Also, Patrick’s source says the same thing as your source. The Pats have our 4th round pick and we only got that 4th round one back with the Rams trade.
February 2nd, 2015 at 3:17 pm
@ Bonzai
Just counted 8 on your aource. 2 picks in round 6, 1 in each other round. Go look
February 2nd, 2015 at 3:42 pm
Do you Winston marks actually think the Glazers are going to put their Product through 3 years of a rape trial? #RealityCheck #SantaClauseIsReal
February 2nd, 2015 at 3:54 pm
cool we have a whole warchest of inferior players for him to use
February 2nd, 2015 at 4:21 pm
Barry…you’re hilarious…3 years of a rape trial?
Where did you get that from? Your head?
If so pull it out of your…______ and get a clue.
February 2nd, 2015 at 4:23 pm
BuccaneerBonzai ….some on here say we can find the next Tom Brady in the 6th round if we just wait. I know smh.
February 2nd, 2015 at 4:45 pm
Rumor now spreading that Winston is slipping and may not go in the first round.
February 2nd, 2015 at 5:07 pm
According to Inside Scoop Cleveland is very high on Winston and Dorial Beckham.
They will use their first two picks on them. And when this happens the rest of the league will send them flowers and thank you notes. Like last year after they took Johnny Manscape.
February 2nd, 2015 at 5:21 pm
Civil trial. #Duh
February 2nd, 2015 at 5:31 pm
@ Barry
The federal case that Winston’s alleged victim filed against FSU could last up to 18 months. It is projected that she will also file a civil suit against the TPD and Winston himself. It will be news and horrible PR for quite a while. Can you immagine the Bucs having him out in the community on Tuesdays trying to show he’s a great guy while at the same time he’s defending himself in court? FABULOUS!!!
February 2nd, 2015 at 10:14 pm
The Bucs have 8 picks in the upcoming draft.
1,2,3,4,5,5,6,7
Where did you come up with 11 picks Bonzai???
And your Walter Football source is wrong as well in regards to the 2nd pick in the 5th round that is not listed. We traded our 6th round pick and Casillas to the Patriots for their 5th round pick. So we get the last pick in the 5th round and the Pats get the 2nd pick in the 6th round. They wound up only paying 2 draft spots for Casillas – LOL
