“As Long As You’re Communicating With Ownership”

February 4th, 2015

Glazers2013A popular thought is good NFL teams have owners that stay out of football operations and decisions.

Those who believe that might want to hear what back-to-back NFC champion general manager John Schneider told Joe last week.

Schneider was chatting with Joe and a few other media types about a variety topics. What a cool dude. The October trade of Percy Harvin came up, and Schneider painted a picture of Seahawks ownership playing a vital role in the decision-making process.

Keep in mind this was the Super Bowl winning GM talking a malcontent player who was often injured.

“We had talked to ownership about [trading Harvin.] So if you have support of ownership, it makes [a trade] that much easier,” Schneider said. “As long as your communicating with ownership in that regard, you know, our explaining why it didn’t work out, then it’s much easier to do then just kind of like slamming it home, like waking up the morning, ‘Hey, we’re going to do this.’ We do that not just regarding Percy, but all the players really. Where are we going with them? What if somebody calls?”

And some Bucs fans actually think Team Glazer won’t play a role — perhaps the role — in selecting the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. Joe has waterfront property in Brandon to sell those folks.

  1. Lev Says:

Trade out of that # 1 pick and draft a long snapper. We can get the QB in later rounds.

  2. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

Yea, and I’m sure the Glazers are going to let the Bucs trade down or take a freaking defensive end instead of a potential franchise QB. Please

  3. BirdDoggers Says:

There has to be communication. It’s no different than any other business in that regard. The problem is when the owners are making the decisions despite the feedback of their front office or coaching staff. I think the Glazers will have a big voice when it comes to the #1 pick. However, I think their preferences could be swayed if the GM, coaches and scouting department don’t think a certain prospect doesn’t grade out well enough to draft #1 overall.

  4. Hawk Says:

I have read the above three times, Joe, and I still do NOT see where the OWNERS made the decision. Keeping the owners ‘in the loop’ is just common sense (as well as being professional), but nowhere does the above say that the owners MADE (or even made suggestions) about personnel moves.
You could just be suffering from heat-stroke at your waterfront property.

  5. Skyline Crew Says:

So by telling the ownership that you are trading a player is playing a role? I’m sure every NFL team does that. Wouldn’t want to be an owner and wake up and be like “Traded who?” “Why?”. Kind of reaching aren’t we. I’m sure Lovie and Licht will inform Glazer of the results of all evaluations and investigations and tell him who they think they will be drafting or what their plans are. Glazers probably don’t care since they are more in to soccer than anything else. They’ll probably sign off on anything.

  6. Skyline Crew Says:

You want Owner involvement then you look at a Jerry Jones or Dan Snyder. Those Owner’s are involved and make a majority of decisions. Hell Jerry is the GM over there.

  7. bucrightoff Says:

They can play a role, they just can’t make the pick. If they do we’re totally screwed as a franchise. Let the football people handle football, the rich kids through nepotism should not be involved in anything football related.

  8. Barry Says:

With the character issues with Winston you know owners will be involved. IMO, with the impending civil trail looming on Winston, the Glazers have taken the Winston option off the table.

  9. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

There will be no civil trial Barry…..cleat chaser’s appearance in that documentary pretty much seals it. No one preparing for a civil trial would EVER appear in a movie

  10. Keith Says:

Interesting, Joe. Hawk, I think you missed the point.

  11. Mr. Patrick Says:

    @ Cream
As usual you are mistaken. Her appearence in that documentary was to lay the groundwork for a civil trial. She has already filed a Federal lawsuit against FSU and is suspected to be preparing one to be filed against the TPD. Just remember that when large sums of money are involved anything is possible and people come out of the woodwork. Just ask Bill Cosby

  12. theodore Says:

Russel Wilson threw a game ending pick, do you guys really want a 3rd round QB? 🙂

  13. Mr. Patrick Says:

I think it will be interesting to see who really does make the decision about what to do with that #1 pick and what the decision process really will be.
Do the Glazers make the pick, do Lovie and Licht make it, how much does the imput of assitant coaches matter, do the Glazers tell Lovie to make the decision but run it by us first, will it be a total group decision and if so who has the final deciding vote?
What do you guys think? Who decides?

  14. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

    wrong mr patrick

you clearly have no idea what you’re talking about. The documentary was so she could get her face on tv. The code of conduct hearing was meant to lay the groundwork for a civil trial. That went bust just like everything else she has tried because she is a lying, self-described cleat chaser.

This “federal” lawsuit you’re so hyped up about. Also going nowhere. There will be no civil trial and if she does try to file it will be thrown out…not faster than a counter suit will be filed but pretty damn quickly. I also wouldn’t be overly confident that CNN will end up airing this “documentary.” We will see, but they are treading very very closely to slander and libel right now.

  15. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

Hell all Winston’s lawyer has to do is USE the documentary as proof that she’s only out for the money.

Case dismissed and the whiners will whine.

  16. DallasBuc Says:

Given the QB decisions made by Lovie Smith in year 1 it is fair to expect them to be more involved at this position from here on out.

  17. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

She will NOT sue Jameis. There is no way her atty will let her deposed by Winston’s lawyer. From #cleatchasers to her friends stories different her, etc. It won’t happen. I doubt they even get that far with the FSU case. They are looking to get a settlement, nothing more.

She does not want to go to deposition. It will get ugly. Don’t believe me? Just watch and see.

  18. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

    Singin’ :

And the whiner’s gonna whine, whine, whine, whine, whine and I’m just gonna laugh, laugh, laugh, laugh, laugh it off.

    Laugh it off!

  19. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

Question : Am I the only one on this site that can’t wait until we roll the clocks back again so all the post times will be correct on JBF?

    lol

  20. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    @87

We are looking great on NSD. And UF is currently #35. That’s definitely something to laugh about. And UF is paying Muschamp to pull them to Auburn. Even funnier.

  21. PewterPants Says:

Trade Glennon and Doug Martin to the Browns for their 19th 1st rd pick and a 5th rd pick

  22. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

ODB…Oh I know man. They lost Kai Locksley though.

  23. Couch Fan Says:

Stop makin fun of my gators! We’ll be back sooon!!

  24. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

Joe hurry up with Jameis Watch I have something saved and ready to go for all to see. I’ve having a really hard time keeping to myself all day.

    You’ll enjoy it too.

  25. Mr. Patrick Says:

    @ Cream and 87
Sorry, but as usual wrong again.
The allegged Winston victim was not paid anything for the documentary
And yes, CNN will show the documentary in prime time before the draft
And the only way to be convicted of slander is if the person you pinpointed can prove what you said if false. Think Shameis wants to go to court and open up that can of worms? NOPE
And at the code of conduct hearing it was Winston, not his alleged victim, that refused to be questioned so he read the statement that his attorney wrote for him
Geez, I know you Winston lovers keep your head way down in the sand, but you have to come up for air and facts every now and then

  26. Mr. Patrick Says:

I wonder how much input the Glazers had or listened to when Dom and Raheem drafted Josh Freeman? I bet they don’t want to get burned like that again

  27. Skyline Crew Says:

I liked the Freeman pick, but definitely thought it was a reach for him in the 1st.

Hopefully, once FA hits here soon we will be able to tell more of what is going on and the way we will be drafting.

While we’re at it, we should try and acquire JJ Watt for a 7th round pick. About as good of odds as happening…

  29. Hawk Says:

    Keith Said:

“… Hawk, I think you missed the point.”

    Joe said:

“And some Bucs fans actually think Team Glazer won’t play a role — perhaps the role — in selecting the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.”

This looks to be the ‘point’. What did I miss?

  30. theodore Says:

@bucrightoff – Fans are delusional when it comes to the value of their own players, and the stupidity of other teams.

The Texans will take nothing less than a 5th round pick for Watt 🙂

  31. Buc'n Enough Says:

    That’s funny Joe…

Larry. Moe and Curly Glazer making the decision on who to draft…I would like to be the fly on the wall when they are discussing who to pick…

So far, they chose..RAH…DOM…& Toes on the Line..( Not a good track record).

Maybe they use one of those magic 8 balls to make the pick, you know, shake it up and it and turn it over and see who the 8 ball says to pick

    or

They hire a Medium to contact Father Malcolm to help them make the decision…

Either way, those Stooges have a lot riding on this pick and they better get some help.

  32. feelthepewterpower Says:

All the evidence you need to show that the Glazers will play a role in the draft is the war room video of them in the room as Light submitted the pick for Mike Evans last year…We’re not drafting anyone without their blessing/approval. My hunch is that they’ll take Mariota (because of the off field issues of Winston, plus they originally wanted Chip Kelly), but I hope I am wrong and they take Jameis. The kid is still young, he will be around grown men in the NFL and hopefully takes that important step of maturing.

  33. Nick2 Says:

I just hope they are not scared of Winston. If they just tell Lovie to pick whichever qb he wants of the two I will be happy.

Bro, innocent until proven guilty. He wasn’t even found guilty enough to be charged and stand trial. Then FSU review board apparently believed the same thing. Heaven forbid somebody falsely accuses you of something. I would hate to think that everybody in your world assumes you’re guilty regardless of the facts.

Don’t be ridiculous! We need that 7th round pick…we should be able to get Leonard Williams or Randy Gregory in that spot…if you want JJ Watt so bad, I’m sure the Texans would be thrilled to receive Oneil Cousins for him.

  36. StPeteBucsFan Says:

I can easily understand why some posters are calling this woman a “cleatchaser”.

Makes them feel better about Jameis actions. And of course none of us have EVER been around a boorish, self entitled, big football “hero” who crossed the line with arrogant behavior. Had to be the woman because it ABSOLUTELY could not be Saint Jameis.

  37. lurker Says:

“I can easily understand why some posters are calling this woman a “cleatchaser”.”

i had to look this up to be sure it is what i was thinking it was. it seems there was a clique of girls that called themselves “fsu cleat chasers”. it is said that the accuser was a part of this clique or called herself this. perhaps, perhaps not. of course, much information has been deleted from social media regarding said clique.

  38. Dean Says:

I think it breaks down this way.

If it is simply a choice of who is a better fit for the scheme or who is more the type of QB the team wants or needs, then the total choice is up to L & L. The Glazers just sign off.

If there are character concerns or a chance that the chosen one could impact negatively on the organization, then the Glazers are going to have a much stronger voice in the decision.

  39. mikeh Says:

AND WAIT WAIT FOR IT AWWWWW! THE GLAZERS AND LOVIE DONT WANT NO TROUBLED BOZO. WINSTON DROPPING FAST. AND BOOM GOES TO THE JETS. YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!
