Who Should The Bucs Draft?

January 14th, 2015

Later this week, Joe will compare results here to those from the same poll last week.

  1. Rob Says:

If I’m not mistaken it seems you can vote over and over again… maybe fix that and restart this poll if you want anything resembling an accurate answer?
You are mistaken. Multiple votes don’t go through from the same IP address. Joe is not an idiot. –Joe

  2. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Now let it run throughout the day so the people at work get to vote too. 🙂

Obviously, all the Winston people are here right now.

  3. Robert 9 Says:

wow, lot’s of rape approval on here today. FML

  4. Jim Says:

If you want a short-term fix Winston is the choice. Barring injury, the qb should help the team for the next 10 to 15 years. Looking long term, I prefer Mariota.

  5. J Moné Says:

Winston acquitted so please drop the “rape”

  6. Sapp, STFU Says:

I’m torn. I want a QB no matter what. But I don’t know which guy is better. And considering the likelihood that anyone can be a bust, I’m not convinced this pick will actually be the turning point of the organization.

We have to remember that Manning sucked his first year too. Aarggg!

Formerly: Draft the Chip Kelly Bait

  7. bucrightoff Says:

Leonard Williams is gonna be the guy. Lovie will not be able to stop himself once he gets to break him down. He’s gonna think of Julius Peppers with Leonard and that will be that.

  8. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

Voted trade down if there’s someone willing to forfeit some future #1 picks. Problem is I’m not sold that either Mariota or Winston will grade out as a #1 pick with very many GM’s since both have issues (system and off field respectively). I just can’t see how after a 2-14 season Lovie and staff survive another “rebuilding year” excuse with the Glazers if they draft a QB and sit him (or play him and he is another turnover machine like Bortles was his rookie year). I think for Lovie the best chance to win now is draft a DT/DE who can potentially contribute day 1, bolster the OL, and roll with Glennon (hoping Koetter has a scheme that works for him).

  9. StPeteBucsFan Says:

LMAO. Opinions are like ……. It’s a sports blog and so I respect everybody’s right to their opinion.

I was mildly surprised we didn’t have more in my category of “Don’t Know”.

Only 5% could admit they don’t know. Again..LMAO.

You guys are more certain than even Koetter, Lovie and Licht at this point. No interviews, no combine, no background checks and yet let’s throw a dart at the board and hope for the best. 🙂

  10. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Toes

I certainly take your points and won’t pitch a hissy if they go for a DL. We needed a better pass rush last year. There is some hope we might be able to cobble together a rush if Clayborn returned to rookie form..If Michael Johnson got healthy and played like he did with the Bengals and if Jacques Smith keeps on improving. Our interior DL is actually solid with GMC..Akeem. McDonald and perhaps even Bowers who certainly played better inside than out.

However OL is totally different. There are reportedly at least three franchise tackles in this draft. We select either Peat/Scherff/Stanley to anchor our OL and then we’re just an RG away from a competent line and certainly enough for Koetter to work with.

If we don’t go QB I lean LT but again I realize the value of adding Williams.

  11. Another J Says:

Voted Winston, but Would be happy with either one!

  12. Zam Says:

did you finally get all the MM fans fed up enough to quit the site?

Seriously such a massive reversal makes me question the validity of this poll or the previous one… MM hardly went Toretta to warrant that kind of turnaround.

  13. Luther Says:

People realized that Mariota will face that kind of pressure every week and came to their senses.

  14. Rob Says:

“Winston acquitted so please drop the “rape””

That’s simply not true. The school declined to discipline and and no charges were filed due to lack of evidence. That is no where near the same thing as an acquittal. And there are major questions about the lack of an investigation that are about to be hashed out in a series of lawsuits. The idea that you want the face of your franchise associated with what’s still coming down the pipe is crazy talk.

  15. Patrickbucs Says:

Yeah he was terrible without his two of his top 3 WR’s out top TE and no running game. Thankfully most people on this board aren’t running the hapless Bucs our we would tie the Lions for the worst ever NFL record.

  16. Couch Fan Says:

Massive reversal or is it just that the Mariota fans were just much louder than everybody else? Lol. Makes you think.

  17. Robert 9 Says:

    no more rape talk. promise

from here on out i’ll focus on theft, stupidity and property damage

  18. bigpoppabuc Says:

Leonard Williams, please. An absolute beast.

  19. Tampabaybucfan Says:

It seems to me that Winston is benefiting from losing the Orange Bowl….and that Mariota is certainly not benefiting from his performance in the National Champoinship Game.
Obviously fans are makiing decisions based on individual games rather than the entire body of work.
In addition, to have the owner of the site running a daily promotion for one of the choices has to be an influence.
Thankfully, we won’t make the decision….it will be made by those who get paid to do it.

  20. DB55 Says:

I voted idk. Still tink it will be Leonard Randy williams Gregory but I’m just not sure.

  21. Robert 9 Says:

i voted trade the pick. if we can fleece philly for picks.

MM.. everyone says he’s not ready
    JW.. too many character issues

net-net we either have the next jamarcus russell or a guy who can’t start anytime soon. a no win.

the win is that there are a lot of teams looking and a lot of value in the pick. but i would be happy with either one because we truly need a franchise qb. if they grade out as that then make the pick.

  22. JH Says:

Joe must have rigged the poll.

  23. DB55 Says:

    Tbbf

    That’s what worries me.

ASJ – the jury is out
Simms – lol psst funny guy. Running into T. King was priceless but I’m not impressed.
The OL picks? Need we say more?
Herron – poor kid can’t catch punts or passes.

So yea, the professionals who get paid, maybe don’t have the most outstanding track record. Check it out for yourself. Look at rnd two beneath ASJ and you see quite a few impact players like Jordan Matthews, jace amaro and Carlos Hyde to name a few.

  24. DB55 Says:

    Here you go:

    http://www.nfl.com/draft/history/fulldraft

  25. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @DB55

We can worry…sure…but we don’t have a choice…..it’s not an election, its the draft….

  26. nybucsfan424 Says:

VOTED IDK AS WELL IM SOOOO CONFUSED!!!

you guys are right still very early and after pro days and interviews maybe we will have a better idea

I like the Williams pick even tho i have said on here before i wanted MM.

I JUST WANT TO WIN !!!!

  27. Hendiggity Says:

It most certainly will be JAMEIS WINSTON!!! There is really no debate. He is the best QB prospect since Andrew Luck. He will sell alot of jerseys and put more fans in the stands simply off the FSU fanbase in and around Tampa alone. AND TO Anyone calling him a rapist or commenting about the way he talks, I ask you this: “Would you say those things to his face?” I highly doubt it. This is why I hate Social Media, it gives some of you people a sense of safety sitting behind a computer screen thinking you can say whatever you want. If you cant say it to his face, then say nothing all. COWARDS!!!

  28. DB55 Says:

    Tbbf

Can you imagine Evans, Vjax and Jordan Matthews lined up together? Carlos Hyde and Martin pounding the rock. A lot of good defensive players too.

  29. Espo Says:

Neither of these qbs look like franchise players to me. If this were last year’s draft, where we should’ve picked Carr, neither of these would be first round picks.

  30. You Go Joe Says:

    Rob got burned!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    And WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA….. people want Winston?

People realized that Mariota will face that kind of pressure every week and came to their senses.
    ***************
Then everyone should have voted “Trade Down” we all saw how Winston did against a fast team in Oregon. They will be faster in the NFL.

  32. Buc1987 Says:

    I just voted for :

    Jaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaameis!

  33. Buc1987 Says:

    TBBF…You wanted the poll.

Now everyone quit crying and like it.

  34. RCH Says:

So basically 19% of Buc fans don’t know anything about football that is what I learned from this poll by looking at the results.

  35. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

Koetter yesterday: “I do think in the NFL it’s easier to win when you have a franchise quarterback, but I don’t think it’s a necessity that you have a franchise quarterback,” Koetter said in a Tuesday conference call with the Tampa Bay media.

    **************
That’s false, many had Mariota going in the 1st round last year as well. He decided to stay for his degree though. Now he is projected as a potential #1 pick.

  37. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

The more time passes, the more I think Liar and Lapdog are actually going to keep Glennon. I like Mariota and Winston, but let’s all be real, they were far from impressive. Taking an NFL hit and not being able to hop back up? Or getting tackled by a ghost and fumbling the ball 10 yards back? Those comparing Winston to Luck and Mariota to Rodgers need to lay off the pipe.

I voted Mariota, because we really need a QB with “it”. Winston has it too. But I wouldn’t mind if they beef up the O-line and start Glennon next year and groom Mariota. Glennon has already gotten the Matt Ryan endorsement and has not looked bad when the O-line plays well. But he doesnt have “it”. I don’t think we trade down. We need a QB.

  38. Oregone Bust Says:

    Mariota is a bum.

  39. Eric Says:

Didn’t take long for that opinion to change.

  40. ManzielMadness Says:

Winston…. Mariota scares me, once Oregon faced 3rd and long situations against Ohio St. they were done. And if we went defense I see Lovie taking Gregory, Leonard Williams doesn’t for our scheme and Gregory is Lovie’s prototypical DE

  41. ManzielMadness Says:

    Fit our scheme as well*

  42. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

    @ ManzielMadness

Curious why you think Williams doesn’t fit the Bucs scheme as well as Gregory? Williams played a 3 technique while Kiffin was the USC DC and was able to adapt well to other positions/techniques once he got a new DC. Most analysts think he can be a dominant lineman who can play DT or DE in the NFL regardless of 4-3 or 3-4 scheme. Gregory seems like a fine pick too if the Bucs trade out of the #1 spot.

  43. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

FWIW I’m not ‘scarred’ of the Bucs drafting Mariota or Winston, I just don’t think it’s the best play for a team with a defensive-minded HC who’s seat is kind of warm bordering on hot. I’ll confess to being one of the few that actually think Glennon can be an effective NFL starting QB if he gets at least 3 seconds in a fairly clean pocket…MG8 will never be confused with a run first QB, but that’s actually not a bad thing in the NFL with all the rules protecting QB’s in the pocket. I’m very interested to see what he can do with the first NFL experienced OC he’s had especially seeing some similar traits in his game to Matt Ryan. To me a QB is an option for the Bucs to draft, but the desperate need is pass rush and Oline, maybe LB as well

Acquitted? They had such little evidence he wasn’t even freaking charged. Kind of like Mark Sanchez, or Peyton Manning’s sexual assault in college, yes putting his bare ass and testicles on top of a female trainer’s head could be considered sexual assault

Actually, for any head coach, a rookie QB is the best option. Even if the rookie and team struggles, coaches on the hotseat often survive when they have a hopeful young stud QB in waiting, owners and GMs don’t want to mess with continuity. Also, with Lovie being defensive minded, it is his mind set that his teams will play good defense, he knows all he needs to win is a competent offense. QB is a great place to start.

  46. Buccfan37 Says:

I voted late to trade down. Let Lovie draft who he thinks is a can’t miss prospect. These QB offerings are just ho hum.

    ______________________________________________________________

Actually in 2015’s NFL, with a dwindling fanbase and little hope, a coach coming off a 2-14 season isn’t getting a third season without winning. We just saw 11 and 12 win coaches get fired. Lovie going 2-14, 6-10 is fired no matter how you wanna spin it. You may wanna keep him, but you’ll be in the 1% who does. Season ticket base is dead at that point.

Starting a rookie and watching him struggle means Lovie is fired. Drafting a rookie to sit doesn’t help Lovie. Drafting Leonard Williams? That helps Lovie for sure. There is no buying time. Lovie’s track record is not good enough to let him have two losing seasons when other new coaches are making a much bigger impact. Lovie blew all his goodwill in one season, which makes the notion he tanked utterly absurd. He decided to cut his own job security? I doubt it.

  49. Buc1987 Says:

bucrightoff …Lovie will be safe if the Glazers WANT a QB to sell tickets.

  50. bucrightoff Says:

Why does that make him safe? Are you seriously suggesting if he goes 2-14, 2-14 he’s safe no matter what because he takes a QB? What if the QB he takes looks awful? Sorry but there is no safe for Lovie without winning. A new shiny QB is meaningless if the team still sucks. You say you’ll buy 1,000 season tickets or whatever…what is Winston’s first year stat line is 12 TDs, 20 INTs? Are people gonna keep coming out just because he was drafted #1? Probably not.

Seats were full with Chris Simms, Shaun King and Jeff Garcia. Winning is how you fill seats, not #1 picks.

  51. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

Winston has too many flaws in his mechanics on-the-field and too many flaws in his character off-the-field…. Winston might be better in the short-term, but I guarantee Mariota ends up being better in the longrun. Oh, and Mariota currently sits atop the bucs draft board according to my inside source.

  52. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

” but I guarantee Mariota ends up being better in the longrun”

Can I get the lottery numbers too, Carnac?

  53. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

Oh, and ask yourselves this: If u were accused of raping someone, and u had video evidence showing that it was actually consensual, would u destroy that evidence? It’s pretty obvious to me that the sex was not consensual; therefore rape.

  54. NewTampaChris Says:

I just looked at the list of overall #1 NFL picks. So many of them were minor contributors or flat-out busts. Scary.

  55. Pat Says:

Draft Leonard Williams and sign Suh…spooky huh? BOO!

  56. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

Pat, why do we need 3 DTs. And we couldn’t afford Suh and McCoy.

  57. Pat Says:

You are correct Sky-Suh is just a Fantasy. Okay then, just saying, take the sure thing in Williams then. If we flop like the Rams did with their #1 pick…look who was there at 2 & 3.

  58. ndog Says:

You’re right Rob he was never even charged so how could he be aquicatted?

  59. ndog Says:

And for the record if they don’t draft Winston as a season ticket holder I am going to seriously consider giving up my tickets. I would have a serious issue with their ability to judge talent after the free agents last year and then picking a project qb ,at best, or a random player that in the long run won’t make a difference (see mario williams, Erik Fischer, etc…)

  60. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

    @ Pat

I’m with you on the Williams pick especially if they can’t trade down, but instead of Suh I’d prefer the Glazer money truck be used to bring Jason Pierre Paul back to Florida assuming he doesn’t totally break the bank. I can envision a healthy Pierre-Paul, McCoy, Williams, and (whoever wins the other DE spot?) causing opposing QB’s to shart themselves after being pummeled 1 or 2 seconds after the ball is snapped 🙂

  61. Pickgrin Says:

Apparently JBF readers are coming to their senses regarding who the best QB prospect is.

  62. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

Toesontheline, that would be a great fantasy for Bucs.

  63. Buc1987 Says:

Bucrightoff…I say more than a 1000 FSU-Buc fans buy season tickets.

More like in the 10’s of 1000’s buddy.

  64. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

    @ skyline crew

Hey a fan can dream 🙂 Thing is we have the #1 pick this year, so Leonard Williams can be aquired. I’m pretty sure the Bucs have a good chunk of free cap space, so barring the Giants using the franchise tag (which I believe I read would be a $15M cap hit for NY) the Bucs could make that scenario a reality. No first round shiny new rookie QB that may or may not pan contribute in year one or two or ever, but if I’m Lovie Smith I’m rolling the dice with the “ToesOnTheLine fantasy defense” and Glennon doing enough to make a few throws to his playmakers, protect the ball, and not loose the game.

  65. ndog Says:

Hey Erik my inside source says the Eagles will get Mariota. With the 20th pick in the draft!

  66. DB55 Says:

Tough situation for Lovie. If he doesn’t pick a qb people will be like wth. If he picks a qb people will be like argh another 2-3 losing seasons.

Winning IS the best way to fill seats so I think the easiest way to win is to strengthen the defense and ST.

I still need to ask where williams lines up? Is he a 3tech, NT or DE? Gregory on the other hand looks like a Simeon rice clone.

You can keep JPP his fire has been extinguished. And Suh, oh boy, no way Detroit lets him walk they’ll franchise him at the very least. Am I wrong?

  67. StPeteBucsFan Says:

“Winston…. Mariota scares me, once Oregon faced 3rd and long situations against Ohio St. they were done.”

WTF game did you guys watch? Seriously!!! Mariota was down his two top wideouts and the starting TE. His first 3rd down pass hit a guy in the freaking numbers and he dropped it. His second 3 and 12 pass hit a guy smack in the hands and he DROPPED it. Two straight 3rd down conversions for Mariota to start the game..IF receivers made the easiest of catches!!!

Oregon’s game is predicated on getting those first downs and then speeding up the play. Once those two first down passes were dropped and Oregon had no rrunning game and nothing to stop OSU’s running game it was all over but the shouting.

Did you guys actually watch the game?

  68. StPeteBucsFan Says:

And Suh, oh boy, no way Detroit lets him walk they’ll franchise him at the very least. Am I wrong?

Can’t imagine you are DB55. I’ll have to start watching some tape of Gregory. Honestly I haven’t kept up with the DL’s because I’m obsessed with the OL and a franchise LT. I can’t help but think of Walter Jones…6th overall..Tony Boselli 3rd overall. There are reportedly as many as three franchise LT’s in this draft and so that’s probably still how I lean much to Joe’s chagrin.

How we get one is up to L&L. Could trade down perhaps a dozen spots and still get either Peat, Scherff or Stanley.

Not likely that the video evidence would be admissible as evidence. However, the technology does exist that would allow the deleted footage to which you speak of to be recovered. You are way out of your league on understand complicated issues. The state investigator made the evidence available on the internet. Why not base your argument on the actual evidence?

  74. mikeh Says:

vote all you want people! there not taking a QB in first round. no way lovie dovie needs to win now! the seat is warm. @Toes

Mainly be cause Williams plays in a 3-4 and is a DT/DE who mainly uses his power to cause pressure – Lovie covets speed. Randy Gregory is quick, and can cause consistent pressure with his speed (also has power) but his style meshs’s well with the t2. I think LW is a great player I just don’t see lovie picking him when we already have McDonald, Spence, Gmac and Gholston
