Not Confident In Lovie’s OC Hire
January 6th, 2015No, no, no, NO! Do not misread the headline above. “Hire” is not past tense. It means when Bucs coach Lovie Smith hires a new offensive coordinator.
Given the Bucs have interviewed no less than three men (Greg Roman, Dirk Koetter and Marc Trestman), it’s easy to believe by the end of next week, the Bucs may have their new OC.
Count Melissa Jacobs as skeptical, before the announcement is made. The former BSPN producer and founder of the female-oriented site, TheFootballGirl.com, she believes no matter who Lovie hires, Bucs fans will be disappointed.
Much defending of Lovie Smith this season. Dude could have the ghost of Bill Walsh begging to be his off. coordinator & he’d look elsewhere.
— Melissa Jacobs (@thefootballgirl) January 3, 2015
Look, there was little defending of Lovie from Joe. Just how could you defend a coaching job that was a flat out “F” by any standard? Who is defending that?
Now if Jacobs believes Lovie hasn’t had his feet held to the fire enough, then that’s a different animal. Every move Lovie made has his fingerprints on it. And by far, most of his moves blew up in his face like a roman candle with a short wick.
It sure as hell wasn’t Greg Schiano or Raheem Morris who led the Bucs to their worst record in nearly three decades. It was Lovie.

This team would be fools not to interview Chudzinski before making the hire.
Also of note, Trestman scares the hell out of me…
January 6th, 2015 at 9:05 am
No confidence in Lovie….a cheap imitation knock off of Dungy…
I have heard /seen quite a bit of Tony over the past week addressing this and that related to post season college etc. His answers to whatever are in such contrast to Lovies droning meandering answers it is striking. Lovie is an empty suit !
January 6th, 2015 at 9:08 am
Funny, Trestman worked for Bill Walsh, maybe he has a ouija board.
January 6th, 2015 at 9:13 am
welcome to Chicago south.
remember when we used to laugh at fleecing them on trades?
yeah, thats us now.
January 6th, 2015 at 9:14 am
It’s a sad day when Joe is referencing The Football Girl.
January 6th, 2015 at 9:20 am
Hopefully, there are playoff coaches they want to interview.
January 6th, 2015 at 9:20 am
We will know in the near future…
January 6th, 2015 at 9:25 am
No reason to have any confidence in this hire whatsoever. We need this hire done!! I’m tired of the nightmares. Nightmares every night, Lovie hires Mike Tice, Marty Mornhigweg, or friggin Rex Ryan.
I think she has more confidence in the OC hire than I do.
January 6th, 2015 at 9:31 am
my only issue with it is hiring another person your close with. i.e. a yes man?
hire someone that will challenge lovie. oh wait, that happened already.
oh well, back to the recycle bin.
January 6th, 2015 at 9:31 am
The picture Melissa Jacobs uses of herself reminds me of that girl we all went to high school with who seemed normal, but was in reality a liiiiiiiiitle bit creepy.
January 6th, 2015 at 9:33 am
Confidence like Trust is earned not just a given. If one looks at Lovie’s history with an open mind there is no way anyone could be confident in him hiring an offensive coach. Same can be said for his history with draft picks. Lovie has no credibility offensively or as a talent judge therefore the lack of confidence should not be a surprise to anyone.
January 6th, 2015 at 9:34 am
L&L has done so many things against what the core fan base wants, why would OC be any different? The team knew last years OLine would have performed considerably better than this one. Im not a part of the MGM, but why didnt we let him play down the stretch? He could have gotten us 2 more wins. Well probably totally bomb the OC hire and then the draft because Lovie surely values a DE over a QB. I dunno about you all, but i have to keep my expectations low so i dont get so disappointed.
January 6th, 2015 at 9:34 am
Regardless of who Lovie hires as OC, he is still the head coach and he will direct what the OC does.
With this in mind, we draft Mariota, Lovie does his thing with McCown and our record decreased by the 50% Lovie does and we go 1-15 and have another number one pick, the Glazers fire Lovie and hire JoeBucFan as the HC and we win the SB.
There is more chance of this happening than Lovie hiring a true offensive mind as OC and turning him loose to reck havoc on the league. We are behind you Joe.
January 6th, 2015 at 9:34 am
Hey, who’s going to argue with a woman’s intuition?
Lovie Smith = OC Killah…..
and the good OCs know that!!!
Simple as that…..
January 6th, 2015 at 9:35 am
WE* knew, not the team….
January 6th, 2015 at 9:36 am
Just about any OC with NFL playcalling experience will be an improvement…
January 6th, 2015 at 9:37 am
What is a Melissa Jacobs. A television producer who was bounced out of a network hardly makes her qualified to make an informed opinion. I might as well listen to the logic of Robert 9.
A little early in the morning to stir the pot isn’t it, Joe.
January 6th, 2015 at 9:40 am
Trestman, Chud, Norville.
But the basic premise of Lovie being the NFL’s dinosaur remains.
You need to hire an OC who can take over the reins. It’s an eventuality.
January 6th, 2015 at 10:08 am
If Lovie hires Trestman that means he intends to start McClown or McGlennon next year. If that happens the fan base is going to disappear immediately. I can’t and won’t watch more inept offense like last year’s display.
A think a bad hire at the offensive coordinator position will doom both Licht and Smith. This offense needs to be completely different looking than last year for Lovie to survive. IMO.
January 6th, 2015 at 10:12 am
We’re in trouble: Were in trouble cause Lovie doesn’t know what he’s doing; because Winston will stay in school and we’ll take the choir boy instead; because our offensive coordinator will do a little bit better than suck! My expectations are low already….so it won’t hurt as much.
January 6th, 2015 at 10:13 am
You can see my optimism with this team! smh
January 6th, 2015 at 10:25 am
Apparently Dirk Koetter is the choice. Meh, not bad, not great.
January 6th, 2015 at 10:39 am
Dick Koetter isn’t a bad choice, not a wow one either. But there were a lot of awful guys that didn’t make the cut – and for that I’m going to cut Lovie some slack. He could’ve done a lot worse.
January 6th, 2015 at 10:48 am
By the way – a nobody with a twitter account and a website showing displeasure with Lovie means about nothing to me. She can join the rest of the crowd.
January 6th, 2015 at 10:48 am
I think lovie will pick trestman because of his Chicago connections.
January 6th, 2015 at 11:05 am
All three of those are good candidates.
Who do you geniuses want him to hire?
And while you are at it, what QB did you want Lovie to sign last year, who was available, that would have helped this team?
Finally, if they fired Lovie today ho would you replace him with? Rex Ryan seems like the hot candidate. Jack Del Rio is getting interviews. The Shanahans Etc.
Or, are you only capable of bitching?
January 6th, 2015 at 11:26 am
Zero confidence. Right now, the general media consensus seems to be that Koetter is going to be the hire.
If they hire Koetter, drafting Mariota would be a mistake. You need someone like Roman to work an offense around Mariota.
Hiring Koetter means another season with McCown or Glennon under center, and we just aren’t going to get that much better with those QBs. Suffering a heinous season like we just did, and not coming up with a draft pick that might be an actual true game changer at QB is going to be a terrible message to the fan base.
This next season attendance might be bad enough to start the Bucs moving to LA.
January 6th, 2015 at 11:34 am
what are you talking about joe? it takes amazing skill and precision to coach a team to the first pick in the draft lol
January 6th, 2015 at 11:35 am
i have total confidence that Lovie will screw up this just as he has screwed up 100% of everything else he has attempted while in Tampa. Lovie is a bad joke. The clown needs to be fired yesterday.
January 6th, 2015 at 11:42 am
Lovie had 6 offensive coordinators in Chicago…….enough said
January 6th, 2015 at 12:06 pm
As I expected, no ideas, only bitching……………..
January 6th, 2015 at 12:23 pm
Ideas…FIRE LOVIE ! Until Lovie is gone the franchise is lost in the wilderness….
January 6th, 2015 at 12:30 pm
Funny that those that bitched the loudest last year about Schiano now expect those of us who wanted Schiano to stay and were against hiring Lovie to just enjoy the crap sandwich, even though he made the team worse.
January 6th, 2015 at 12:37 pm
I never took a stand against Schiano or Glennon…both rookies to NFL both showed some promise as well as doubt…Lovie on the other hand has shown he is nothing but average at best…certainly not a forward thinking coach, one that sees how the NFL table is set these days and the direction the league is encourage to go….wizz bang offense
January 6th, 2015 at 12:47 pm
I think the Glazers see the big picture in drafting Mariota. Sit him for a year while he learns and adjusts to nfl speed….and in 2016 or 2017, Chip Kelly comes to Tampa as OC or even HC! Meanwhile, O line, O LIne, O LINE!!!!
January 6th, 2015 at 2:08 pm
Ah, Schiano fans.
That explains it.
January 6th, 2015 at 2:13 pm
This time around, have the next OC take a physical.
January 6th, 2015 at 2:22 pm
I guess all you “experts” with all your access (tv) can tell he is lost and doesn’t know what he is doing. Please you guys are something else on this website
January 6th, 2015 at 3:55 pm
Raheem Morris and Greg Schiano’s phones are burning up from teams calling to interview them for all these head coaching vacancies.
And Dominik is in huge demand also……..
January 6th, 2015 at 4:42 pm
Well put, Eric.
Raheem will be lucky if he lasts the year with DC the way his defensive backs were lit up last year.
Schiano will be going back to college, where he belongs.
January 6th, 2015 at 6:17 pm
