Bucs Hire Dirk Koetter As New OC

January 8th, 2015
The Bucs have hired DIrk Koetter as new offensive coordinator.

The Bucs have hired Dirk Koetter as offensive coordinator.

Your Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a new offensive coordinator, buddy. And his name is Dirk Koetter.

The Bucs announced this afternoon the team and Koetter have agreed to terms for him to take over the Bucs offense, a position vacated by Jeff Tedford in the middle of the 2014 season.

Koetter interviewed this past weekend, and Joe was able to break the news about that interview after chatting briefly with Koetter off the record prior to his Tampa Bay interview.

Koetter, 55, has been an offensive coordinator in the NFL for the past seven seasons, the past three in Atlanta. Previously, he served as offensive coordinator in Jacksonville. He had been either an offensive coordinator or a head coach the previous 21 years, all on the west coast, mostly in the then-PAC 10.

For those who like to connect dots, he was head coach of the Oregon Ducks in 1996 and 1997.

can’t wait to hear all the “Welcome back Kotter”! impersonations.

  2. Stanglassman Says:

    Great work Joes

  3. Bob Digital Says:

I hope he can utilize ASJ the same way he did Tony Gonzalez.

  4. Wiezguy Says:

Koetter at OC = Winston at QB

  5. The Buc Realist Says:

joe, can you do a good horshack???

  6. Wiezguy Says:

Atlanta was 8th in offensive yards and 12th in points last year. I’ll take that in 2015 please.

  7. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

  8. The Buc Realist Says:

Glennon and Winston are the QB’s for 2015. write it down!!!

  9. Stanglassman Says:

It seems that the Tampa OC job wasn’t that unattractive after all.

  10. LJ'sDaddy Says:

    Good hire…no trestmen or cutler!

  11. Rob Says:

Please tell me Koetter would be excited about having an electrifying, mobile QB and doesn’t just want Winston because he’s used to working with a statue.

  12. The buc pessimist formerly DB55 Says:

Seriously? The guy who couldn’t get more than 6 wins w 4 pro bowl skill players on his team.

    2013 4-12
    2014 6-10

Tony Gonzales matt Ryan Julio jones Rodney white Steve Jackson.

Seriously man Lovie sure knows how to pick’em. Hope you guys are ready for the matt Ryan clone cuz the future is now.

  13. Joe Says:

Seriously? The guy who couldn’t get more than 6 wins w 4 pro bowl skill players on his team.

Dixie Chicks defense was rotten and Julio Jones is hurt almost as much as Austin Seferian-Jenkins.

  14. Jeffbuc Says:

He’s the offensive coordinator not defensive coordinator Atlanta was crapppy cause there defensive has been bottom 2 last three years

  15. Joe Says:

I hope he can utilize ASJ the same way he did Tony Gonzalez.

Dude has to stay out of the tub, first.

  16. The buc pessimist formerly DB55 Says:

“For those who like to connect the dots”

What are you saying joe, he’s MM daddy?

  17. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

and it seems he or Chip Kelly will be our next HC the year after next

  18. Jeffbuc Says:

Db55 pessimist go be a packers fan you know nothing. Great hire he had number 9 ranked offense in Jacksonville with garrard at qb sounds great to me

  19. The Buc Realist Says:

Koetter will have a quick adjustment coming from Atlanta to Lovie’s terrible O-line

  20. crazy Says:

Solid pick. Either QB will be in good hands.

  21. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

ASJ needs to get in NFL shape….he has lazy flab on his frame

  22. Stanglassman Says:

If Koetter really does like Jameis better and Tenn (I’m not buying Titians are happy w/ their QB position) wants MM why not swap spots with them The Bucs could pick up a extra 1st rounder next year and 2nd this or something like that and still get the QB they/we want.

  23. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Wiseguy

“Koetter at OC = Winston at QB”

Just curious if you base that on wishful thinking or any rational reason? You do know that Koetter is closely tied to Mariota and the Ducks right? He and Helfrich go way back.

You may be right but that’s not the conclusion most would jump to, in fact most would say here comes Marcus…first Father Dungy’s blessing and then an Oregon man known for his work with QB’s is named OC. How did you come up with Jameis?

It’s Koetter’s Oregon connection that actually relieve me. Not that I now believe Mariota is a slam dunk now. If we do not draft Mariota however and instead pick Jameis we’ll feel good knowing that Koetter had the inside scoop on Mariota and must have seen something he didn’t like.

The other possibility is that Koetter has ID a different QB solution freeing Lovie to load up on talent by trading that #1 pick.

Whatever the case I applaud this hire and I’m relieved. Whatever the draft choice I believe at least there will be professional NFL quality offensive judgment in our draft room. The fact that he has intimate knowledge of one of the Heisman winners is just an added bonus. Now if we take Marcus or we take Jameis we’ll know inside knowledge was involved.

  24. bk Says:

I like this hire. NFL proven is what we need. Offense wasnt problem in ATL. I agree with this means Winston is going to be the #1 pick.

  25. Hilobuc Says:

    @The Buc Realist

Your going to have to make a quick adjustment when my Wang flies to your face!

    Stop drinking the haterade…

  26. thunderchunkyPA Says:

Love this move, you have Evans and VJAX like her had J and White. ASJ can be a major weapon at TE. He helped Matt Ryan play at a pro bowl level as well. Now BIG questions, who is the O line coach and QB coach? I assume THE Dirk Koetter has a say? Sounds like an action hero. ” oh no we only have 15 seconds and need a touchdown.. call..DIRK KOETTER”

  27. Howard Cosell Says:

    Howard is OK with this.
Both in the person selected and the length of time it took.
Looks like a good hire and it was done with urgency but not
panic. Maybe the sons are finally applying themselves.

Howard didn’t really care for Roman. The 49ers offense
always underachieved and he had the stench of the Harbaugh
drama on him. Trestman I liked a lot but he started acting like
    a stuck-up bitch….**** him Howard says.

This is good. We have Matty Ices OC and we have him early
enough where we can set to work with some urgency.

  28. tmaxcon Says:

I’m good with this hire. Now Lovie leave him alone. Get out of way.

  29. INDYbucsfan Says:

@joe tell me how to fell about this.

  30. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

I like Winston better than Mariota….but I would have take Mariota over Winston

  31. warrenfb12 Says:

    Jameis at QB?

Or does it really mean Glennon is the future?

  32. jacko101 Says:

Hmmm interesting. I don’t see him coaching up Mariota 🙁 It’s either glennon or Winston

  33. Pickgrin Says:

I like the hire. The man has good solid NFL experience as an OC and has been a play caller for almost 20 years. Exactly what we didn’t have last year.

The Bucs offense just got instantly a lot better.

Now the big question. Which QB does he prefer???

  34. Harry Says:

Awesome! In the little research I did, he was my favorite. But I was also very excited about Lovie, so wtf do I know, lol. Hopefully I got this one right

  35. StPeteBucsFan Says:

“Koetter will have a quick adjustment coming from Atlanta to Lovie’s terrible O-line”

Not really realist. He’ll feel right at home. Did you miss Joe’s post where the stat guys determined that the Dixie Chick’s offensive line was actually worse than ours!

I don’t know that they were worse but Atlanta’s OL has sucked for awhile now.
Remember last year when they were so desperate they had to start Jeremy Trueblood after we and the Skins dumped him.

  36. Howard Cosell Says:

    Jeez.
If the Bucs do pick Winston you’ll be able
to walk outside and if you listen very hard
you should be able to hear the Joes climaxing
    together.

    Whatever. Winstioata.
From what I hear it is leaning more Winston now.
Either one is much better than Johnny.
What was the deal with Joe and Johnny Football.
Even I (I mean even Howard) could tell that JFF
would be more of a reality TV personality than an
    NFL QB.

  37. Howard Cosell Says:

Howard has little doubt that Lovie has been
relieved of his veto power on offense.
Again, credit the sons with stepping up
    to get this done.

  38. Stanglassman Says:

RE: Koetter so close to the ducks.

Way back? Other than coaching for the Ducks 19 years ago for one year.

Does this mean that Trestman and the Bucs are real close? He coach here one year a long time ago too.

Is there more to it, I don’t get the close connection?

  39. cmurda Says:

Im just relieved it’s over and we could have done way worse. I’m not jumping out of my shoes, but I’m also content

  40. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Ok Tricky Dicky, who are you going to want as your offensive assistants? Let’s get rid of OL coach first.

  41. J Moné Says:

    Mariota please ty

  42. bucfan999 Says:

If Marcus Mariotta had gone to Florida State and Jameis Winston had gone to Oregon with the same stats that they had this year the people clamoring for Winston would now be clamoring for Mariotta. All they would be saying is look at the 17 interceptions in college against inferior competition and how athletic Mariotta is. Face facts 17 interceptions against college competition translates to 30 interceptions against NFL competition.
Koetter will want the best QB he can get to help not only the Bucs but his own career and that QB is Marcus Mariotta. He has Russell Wilson type skill set, a clean off field with no character concerns and you can run a varied offense that will keep defenses off balance.
A good choice by Lovie and Light, Koetter will make our offense at least 12 spots higher in his 1st season.

  43. StPeteBucsFan Says:

I’m not saying Koetter won’t draft Jameis. But I’m incredibly curious where you guys connect dots that an Oregon man who is best buds with Helfrich is now a cinch to draft Jameis?

The only way that makes sense is if Koetter has said something and I feel pretty sure he hasn’t and won’t! Again he’s a freaking OREGON man with close ties to Helfrich.

Now if he does take Jameis I feel better about the choice because of Koetters inside knowledge of Oregon’s program and Mariota.

IMHO it’s either Mariota or Glennon and a bunch of picks in the draft. I love Andrus Peat at left tackle, a man beast whose father played in the league.
And Peat did announce a couple of days ago that he’s coming out for the draft. Alas I’ve seen him going as high as #3. That seems a little stiff for a franchise tackle but who knows.

  44. Stanglassman Says:

That was his point he will feel right at home B/C the Bucs OL sucks too.

  45. Cascade Says:

I don’t see how this hire says anything about the Bucs’ preference at QB in the draft. People assume WAAAYY too much.

  46. biggun Says:

Now we trade the first pick get some multiple picks and get glennon in the bullpen and ready for action. New OC has his younger version of matty ice on the roster, we need more pieces to puzzle than a raw rookie qb to fix our problem. This way lovie can keep his boy McCowen on board in some compasity.

  47. jb Says:

It’s a one or two year hire….tops! Both he & Lovie will be gone before or after the 2016 season. Great Job Lovie! What imagination………….Let’s sign the Falcons castoff…what was their record last season? Just because Koetter’s offense bitch slapped your team to the tune of 56 points doesn’t mean you should hire him lol

  48. The only Buc fan in Montana Says:

I am excited about this hire. I hope he gets a say in our O-Line coach. I am still on the Mariota bandwagon, so my hopes are a little higher yet.

  49. Joe Says:

New OC has his younger version of matty ice on the roster,

Mike Glennon is a younger version of Matty Ice? Really?

    Calm down.

  50. Stanglassman Says:

    Koetter & Helfrich.

I see they coach together at Az state too. Alright. I see it now. Maybe there is something to it.

  51. biggun Says:

Who know maybe trade Atlanta for matty too, then we have a set of twins and a mentor for glennon.

  52. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Stanglassman

Way back? Other than coaching for the Ducks 19 years ago for one year.

Perhaps this helps from wikipedia Stan. Helfrich, Mariota’s coach literally owes his career to Koetter….

When Koetter was hired as head coach at Boise State in 1998, the 24-year-old Helfrich went with him as the quarterbacks coach.[7]
At Boise State Helfrich coached Broncos quarterback Bart Hendricks. Under Helfrich’s development, Hendricks won Big West Conference Player of the Year in 1999 and 2000 and guided the Broncos to the fourth best passing offense in the nation in 2000.[8]
Helfrich followed Koetter to Arizona State when Koetter became the head coach of the Sun Devils. Under the coaching of Helfrich, Andrew Walter broke nearly every Arizona State passing record and John Elway’s Pac-10 touchdown record.[9]

  53. R.O. Says:

Truth is no one knows anything about everything.

  54. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Sorry Stan…I was typing when your post popped up saying you knew that.

    Apologies.

But besides the connection we all can get pretty excited by the success BOTH of these coaches have enjoyed developing QB’s. Since Koetter is Helfrich’s mentor we can give some of the credit of Helfrich success to Koetter.

The more I think about it and the more I read the more I like this hire!!!

  55. The Buc Realist Says:

Lets be honest, If the OC makes it to the bye-week that will be a huge improvement.

  56. Aceofaerospace Says:

This hire and selecting a franchise quarterback with the first pick will go a long way in helping me forget about last season. I still want Mariota but I will be winstons biggest fan (besides the joes) if he’s wearing pewter next year.

  57. Stanglassman Says:

Once again read comments BF posting St PeteBF. It will save you and everyone else time.

  58. Gooberville Says:

Mariota is clearly the choice now. Oh yeah… Feels good. Thank god Joe was wrong again. At least we get to make fun of him next year while we watch both of his guys struggle. Life is good.,

  59. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Sorry realist. I should have read your post more carefully. According to Stan you were saying that Koetter will adjust quickly BECAUSE the Falcons line is as bad as the Bucs. True dat realist.

  60. Stanglassman Says:

You got me that time. Same deal.

  61. Eric Says:

    Good solid hire.

There goes the “nobody wants to work for Lovie” nonsense.

  62. chris Says:

Stanglassman, He was the head coach at Boise State where Helfich was under him. He lists Chip Kelly and Kotter as his two biggest influences on his coaching.

  63. cmurda Says:

The other thing I like is a little bit of inside scoop against ATL twice a year doesn’t hurt.

  64. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

Well, there you go. Winston it is.

The style he ran at Atlanta favors Jameis much more than Mariota. Mariota would have to learn how to play outside his wheelhouse while Jameis would adjust better.

If they were going to draft Mariota they would’ve gotten an OC that favors a spread option IMO, so while it may not be set in stone, I think these signs point to Jameis Winston going No. 1 Overall to our Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

  65. Stanglassman Says:

Good hire, I’m excited we got one of the good ones. I can’t think of many OC in Bucs history I’ve been happy to get.

  66. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

    SPBF & Cascade

It’s pretty simple. Take a look at the offense he’s been running in Atlanta. take a look at that playbook and tell me which QB is a better fit. The answer is glaring.

  67. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    Stan

Once again read comments BF posting

Don’t know how long you’ve been blogging but frequently when the blog is hopping with activity you can be typing and have a half dozen comments appear after you hit the submit. There is NO CHANCE to read comments while you’re typing.

Sometimes I misread them as in realist’s point. But I DO read everybody.

  68. biggun Says:

    @joe

YES… you know the coaching history behind ryan and glennon, its not that far fetched, glennon had sh*t for OC’s past couple years, put matty in same postion when he came in I don’t think he would have faired better. Ijust hink we got a lot more provlems than qb to put all our eggs in one basket lets get some multiple picks off this 1st and go shopping.

  69. Bucnut2 Says:

Guys, this means a virtutal lock for Mariota. Most of you are reading this wrong. If Lovie was going to draft Winston, it would have been Tressman. Lovie is levering his connections with Oregon. For better or worse, write it down, I said it, it’s Mariota!

  70. thegregwitul Says:

With this hire, I’d like to think that McCown will be shown the door unless he were to reduce his salary from five to about a million bucks. Glennon always reminded me of a poor mans Ryan or homeless mans Flacco, so perhaps he sticks around to backup Mariotta or Winston.

My guess is it’ll be Mariotta if he declares after Monday’s game. Between the Dungy connection and this hire (Dirk likes to use the screen game quite a bit, which MM would surely utilize), along with the fact that Mariotta looks electric with superstar potential and is a choir boy off the field to boot, it just makes sense.

If I’m wrong, then I’m wrong, I just need the number one pick to be either MM or Winston and I’ll be happy.

  71. Eric Says:

And of course the do nothing but bitch crowd predictably weighs in….

    SMH.

    —–

You make no sense. Koetter has based all of his offenses both in pros and in college on pro style systems…not the spread. If anything, it proves Winston will be the choice…which it should be. if anybody knows how to get by with a bad offensive line, it’s Koetter. If anybody knows how to get two (actually three including Harry Douglas) WRs the ball, great QB play, and to incorporate the TE into the system, it’s Koetter. Koetter is made to order for what we have and what we need.

  74. Gooberville Says:

@jb. I’ve seen many dumb comments.. I’ve made a few myself but yours my friend goes to the top. Nice job..

  75. StPeteBucsFan Says:

The style he ran at Atlanta favors Jameis much more than Mariota. Mariota would have to learn how to play outside his wheelhouse while Jameis would adjust better.

Thanks. That at least is a rational reason. I don’t know that I agree but it at least is plausible and not something just pulled out of your backside.

Any other reason folks think an Oregon man with connections to the head coach would decide to pick Jameis?

  76. cmurda Says:

Just because Koetter’s offense bitch slapped your team to the tune of 56 points doesn’t mean you should hire him lol……

The Falcons record was abysmal because of how pathetic their defense was. Case in point why Mike Smith was fired. There was nothing wrong with their offense while Koetter was there. Quite the opposite actually.

P.S. You can’t be a castoff when you haven’t even been let go.

  77. SAMCRO Says:

When the national championship game ends I bet Koetter will offer Scott Frost the position of QB coach. They have the connection.

  78. The Buc Realist Says:

I know that Winston amd Mariota won’t throw at the combine. But I have not seen Mariota make some of the throws that Koetter offense requires. But Winston can as does Glennon.

We should also see a heavy does of play action next year.

The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; The Realist adjusts the sails.

  79. theodore Says:

Koetter gonna turn into Vinny Barbarino when he finds out who’s on offense.

    “Who? What?… I’m so confused”

  80. Gooberville Says:

@brandon.. Who’s says our offense will be a spread? Mariota can play in any system . Go look at his stats from the pocket.. Much better than Winston. If any QB can play in any system it would be Mariota. We will play a similar offense to Seattle IMO..
My comment about us for sure taking Mariita was tongue in cheek. Our OC hire doesn’t really point to either. No one knows and won’t know till the draft.

  81. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    Greg

If I’m wrong, then I’m wrong, I just need the number one pick to be either MM or Winston and I’ll be happy.

I used to feel exactly like you but this hire has relaxed my position. IF we do not take one of the QB’s I’ll trust Koetters judgment and he clearly has inside knowledge about one of the prospects. If he turns them both down then all the folks who have been screaming there is no Andrew Luck in this draft will be vindicated for sure.

I’m just relieved that an NFL quality OC will be part of our draft process. If we pick Jameis I’ll be cool. Marcus fine. Trade down and that tells us Koetter felt neither were good enough for the top pick and Koetter must have a better deal in mind.

  82. chris Says:

He did run variances of the spread in Atlanta, shotgun, single tailback, just because Matty Ice has no mobility doesn’t mean he won’t take advantage of having a mobile qb

  83. cmurda Says:

  84. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Gooberville

No one knows and won’t know till the draft. I’m just doing what the Joes do. Throwing shi! Out there to get a reaction and look it worked.

    I like your style! 🙂

  85. Gooberville Says:

Joes any knowledge (you know since you’re best friends with Koetter) if he gets to bring in his own staff.

  86. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Samcro

When the national championship game ends I bet Koetter will offer Scott Frost the position of QB coach. They have the connection.

That’s an interesting take. There were some here who even wanted Scott Frost as OC…QB coach would be fine with most.

But you didn’t say whether you thought it would be a package deal. Do you believe Frost will bring Mariota with him?

  87. Lovie will start McCown and pick DE Says:

YES!! Finally a legit OC. Welcome to Tampa Koetter and I hope you get the QB and play calling you want.

  88. Name Required Says:

    Check his ticker.

  89. Gooberville Says:

If this guy can turn the Bucs offense around he’ll be a head coach in the next 2 years. I’m suprised he isn’t one now. Pretty decent resume for sure. Feels good to have something good happen to the Bucs.

  90. Ray Rice Says:

Dirk Diggler…. Come on dowwwwwwwwn! Anything to weaken a division rival. I don’t expect an Atlanta offense in terms of productivity in 2015 but they will soon get there. Hope Lovie just leaves offense alone and sticks to D. Mariota is definitely coming now.

  91. Dick2111 Says:

I like the hire, but these words from Lovie in his press conference scare me:

“It became very apparent early in our conversations that we share some of the same philosophies regarding the offensive side of the ball …”

If both of them share the philosophy ‘SCORE MORE POINTS THAN THE OTHER GUY’ then I’m onboard.

  92. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I am glad this is settled early and that we have some solid experience here…..he also is very familiar with NFC South Defenses…..
He will be a HUGE…..GIANT…..step up from Arroyo….

I’m sure everyone has their favorite choice for OC….perhaps Koetter was at least 2nd on a lot of lists….Time to go to work.

Koetter of all OCs understands what happens when your Oline doesn’t perform well…

  93. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Yes! This is the guy I suggested all along!

    He knows our division rival.
He runs a fast-paced nfl offense.
    He’s had success.
He helped Ryan adjust to the nfl.

    Excellent hire.

  94. Soggy Says:

Great a NFL Guy.. and it seems most everybody is onboard with it no matter who we draft at QB=Great news for us buc fans..

  95. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Those saying this means Winston are living a fantasy. They likely chose him because he had coached the Ducks.

This means pick will be Mariota, not Winston.

  96. Roscoe the Pirate Says:

Love this hire! He’s already up to speed with NFC South teams and can dish on the dirty birds. Pull the trigger on JW and put up with 3 or 4 years of his whingy child BS, after that we will have a real chance.

  97. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    (shakes head at dillusional fans)

    IT WILL NOT BE WINSTON.

    Lol. Get a clue, people.

This may just get me to get my season tickets again. Dirk is the perfect hire. Which is why I suggested him the day the Falcons fired their head coach.

    I couldn’t be happier.

  98. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I’ll be surprised if they fire Aroyyo. He basically was asked to sacrifice himself for the team. He might keep the job or get a change in position instead. Lovie isn’t the type to toss him out after what they put him through.

  99. rayjay1122 Says:

Not a bad hire. Now we just have to hope for no more freakish calamities like MRSA and heart conditions. This organization has the worst luck.

  100. bucs4lyfe Says:

For those trying to connect the dots…. As an offensive coordinator you don’t go to a team and tell them who to draft you work with the draft pick your given and your prize will be job security. Don’t remember this guy working with any type of qb close to the makeup up Mariotta at the NFL level, why are people stuck on what someone did in college, he runs a pro offense nor college kids stuff and we don’t need a guy who has to sit and learn lol this is going to be an exciting off season

  101. BucBob1 Says:

Did Lovie just climb up the confidence scale a few ticks? Love the hire. We sure needed an infusion of positive energy here at JBF.

  102. Soggy Says:

@BucBob1, I think maybe up one confidence tick for my house. your right we needed the positive energy infusion. Now the QB draft thing..

  103. mikeh Says:

yup! and Atlanta and rex ryan will know the offense good move!

  104. tgreg Says:
