Glum Mood Over Koetter Departure

Folks from Atlanta are not in a good mood seeing Dirk Koetter taking over the Bucs offense.
Researching new Bucs offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter, Joe wanted to get a sense of precisely what Koetter meant to the Dixie Chicks.
Joe had heard Matt Ryan — he of the 19 picks his senior year at Boston College — was none too happy at Koetter leaving Flowery Branch, the site of the Dixie Chicks compound some 45 minutes northeast of Atlanta.
Koetter had apparently had it with the Dixie Chicks. Though still under contract, he still was encouraged to interview with whoever succeeds was to Mike Smith. But Koetter, apparently disgusted, was one of three Dixie Chicks assistants to clean out his office the moment Smith was jettisoned by Atlanta owner Artie Blank.
To read the words of good guy D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Koetter’s skills will be sorely missed in Billy Sherman’s favorite spot for smores.
Also, we’d like to thank Dirk Koetter for being so gracious with his time during his stay here. How he was able to keep the offense moving with backup offensive linemen over the past two seasons was a tribute to his game-planning and play-calling.
He’ll be a formidable opponent in Tampa Bay for the new Falcons’ coaching staff.
Joe has noticed some Bucs fans have sniffed that Koetter’s offenses were not that good. Really? As Ledbetter points out, the offensive line of the Dixie Chicks has been a mess of injuries the past two seasons. Turnstile Jeremy Trueblood started for them in 2013, and it was so bad this year that before the regular season started, rookie Jake Matthews had to fill the void at left tackle. Hell, even Gabe Carimi started seven games this year. Remember him?
Star wide receiver Julio Jones seems to be in the hot tub as much as he is on the field. And the Dixie Chicks had virtually no running game, relying on over-the-hill Steven Jackson.
Koetter did a fine job putting together a productive offense despite injuries and old age. To Joe, that’s a fine job.

I have a friend up in Atlanta who is happy to see him go, especially after Atlanta failed to put up any points against Carolina at home, in the division championship game.
Not me though, I am glad he is here in Tampa.
It will be interesting to see what QB we will draft, since Dirk has Oregon ties.

My next door neighbor is a huge Falcons fan…..he was upset that Koetter is gone and extraordinarily upset the the Bucs got him…..I’m sure the reaction is mixed.
Here is the question…..is he an improvement from Arroyo?…..don’t think Joe needs to do a poll on that!!!

I like this guy. Step one is achieved now that have to at least break even in Free agency and the Draft. After last years fa mess 50/50 would be nice. I’d like to see 4 new starters on the o line next year but have accepted I’ll be lucky to see 2 new starters. I am not on the Mankins or EDS bandwagons. I think they can easily be replaced. I did read on twitter that Koetter used to coach with Warhop and that they have a history. That’s not good news in my opinion.

I think this will be good for us. Those down on it should try to remember the excitement we all had about Tedford before the season started last year. At least this guy has a proven track record in the NFL. Something we didn’t have with either of our OC’s this year. I wonder how much of the rest of the offensive staff will get shuffled!?!

and something else…..it appeared to me that Lovie stayed out of Arroyos way mostly this year. Why would we think that he would step on Koetter?

I think Lovie will let koetter do his thing to be honest.
Word around the league is that Lovie is pretty hands off when it comes to offense, he simply doesn’t have much interest in it.

He has to be better than what we had. Hopefully with Jameis Winston at quarterback & ME, VJ, & ASJ catching passes we will be able to score more points than our defense gives up.

I’d imagine Lovie’s confidence poll will indicate that the confidence has risen since this hire. Lovie clearly made the decision to hire & Koetter has no problem working for Lovie…..he would have certainly had other choices.
As for Lovie getting in Koetter’s way…..I sincerely doubt it….this is something that would get to the Glazers and I’m sure Lovie is still on a short leash.

Exactly Zam! He’s had success with mobile QB’s and immobile QB’s like Matty Ice.
What he did with the Falcons and their OL is actually amazing. And remember that offense was also hampered by a horrible defense giving up field position.

We do have a lot of fair weather fans though with pretty good reason. When a franchise has been in existence almost 40 years and said franchise has but 7 double digit win seasons, that’s something to be concerned with. Especially when year in and year out the franchise is the paper champion before so many seasons start. Let’s hope this years off season hype transfers to the actual season for once. That said, I like the hire and I’m ok with either qb. M&m isn’t the typical little option qb. Dude is big and with some coaching I bet will be a real qb.

@Tampabaybucfan, I think so too about lovies confidence level, Mine did starting with setting starters in the second half of the last game, that must have been a hard pill to swallow = another loss but for the good of the future he did it and now a good hire of a OC.. It’s nice to be able to acquire a genuine OC rather than some teenager who’s looking for experience like Mike Shula, Clyde Christianson, Greg Olson, Jagodzinski, or Marcus Arroyo. I was getting sick and tired of being OJT for the rest of the NFL.

who said we’ve been winning the offseason? when you sign 4 probowlers in the offseason and still only win 4 games like the infamous greg schiano did, the guy who people wants back so badly yea your not winning anything…..everyone had to know they would address the offensive coordinator with the best we could find out there just like they had to know we would address the o line in the offseason. this is the worst fan base in the nfl, lets fire everybody and start over every year if you have a losing record in a rebuilding year, that actually makes sense to too many bucs fans….how about if you don’t like the coach don’t pay to see them pay, if you don’t pay to see them play then shut up

I’m very happy after the Koetter hire.
If I want to be glum all I have to do is remember the Glazers still own the franchise and not Jeff Vinik.
For the Bucs to win it has to be in spite of bad ownership not because of good ownership.
If you look at franchises like the Bucs, Browns, and other perennial losers the common denominator is ownership.

Listen to this crazy theory. Tampa Bay will not draft a QB with the #1 pick. With the hire of Koetter, Lovie will trade the pick or use it to get us a pass rush. I want everyone to look at his first season in Jacksonville. He fired the starting QB and turned the back-up (David “my legs are rooted tree trunks” Gerrard) into a playoff QB. Since 2007 he has taken whatever the team gives him and turns it into points/yards on the field. He has never been a OC to NEED a certain player for his offense to work. Since being an OC in the NFL his teams have went: DE, DE, OT, DE, WR, no pick, CB. Does this look like the record of a man that is going to take a big risk(drafting a QB is the riskiest pick to make, more busts than even mediocre starters) or is this an alchemist that takes what he has and turns it into gold (sometimes silver, nobody’s perfect)?

Matt Ryan had so much NFL talent around him smh. He took that team up the ranks not by handing off on game winning drives.
I think it’s a good hire need a QB and a line which he didn’t have this year in Atlanta with all those injuries. Julio has been grey when healthy which hasn’t been much. When you give up all those picks to get 1 player it’s going to cost you at some point. I think everyone deserves a chance and I hope this is at least a 2 year deal for our new QB to grow.

My last post was incorrect. 2011 Koetter was still a member of Jacksonville so he drafted a QB and not a WR. In his defense the only still starting QB’s out of that draft are Newton, Dalton, and Kaepernick. So it isn’t like he totally blew it.

That’s an exceptional job and people around here (as previously stated) needs to raise their standards because hes the type of coach that makes the best with what he has.
He still had a solid offense with trash OL.
Hopefully that trait rubs off on Lovie and Frazier who likes to make excuses for injuries when they field sloppy undisciplined teams.

I take your point Chef Paul but winning in the season does begin in the off season. You’re missing the entire point of being a sports fan. You’d work really well on a Chicago Cubs blog. What would you do? Tell them forget Maddon, the great new 3rd baseman and the signing of Jon Lester as winning the off season for how many years now for Cubbie fans.
We know we’ll always be handicapped and frequently sucking hind teat as long as the Glazers own this franchise. It could be worse. At least it’s not Daniel Snyder or that crook up in Cleveland.

I know this will cause blood pressure to hit stroke levels with a lot of JBF’ers, but based on the decent production this guy has gotten out of non-mobile QB’s I’m seeing a real possibility of the Bucs building a OL for Glennon and drafting Leonard Williams with the #1 to get the pass rush that fits Lovie’s plan for success (based on his past in Chicago and things he’s said about winning 10 games with D/ST). Maybe they sat Glennon because they didn’t want to get him David Carr shell-shocked after seeing the pourous O-line last year instead of the speculation that he’s trade bait or McCown was better?

Especially if they’ve won a Heisman. Only 1 out of seven make it in the league.
Since 1950 of the 27 Heisman QB’s only four were successful and overall they have a losing record and horrible QB ratings.
Bryce Petty is looking better and better to me…as Charles Davis and the Baylor coach say…the next Blake Bortles in this year’s draft. It’ll be interesting to see if Petty climbs the draft board like Bortles.

I agree completely with your observation. And so are you fine with that move.
I got no problem with rebuilding our Oline…love to see Andrus Peat and giving Glennon a REAL chance with a decent OC, good receiver and some protection.
I’ve seen enough mock drafts that actually had Williams #1 that he could very well be the BPA. If L&L decide to either fix the OL with a stud tackle like Peat or address our horrid pass rush with Williams I’m ok.
I know we need a QB. But perhaps we need to think more like Billy Beane and the baseball people and pay more attention to probabilities and not just stats on the field. Sadly once again as unbelievable as it might seem to JOE and the JBFers…by Billy Beane thinking if we take one of the two Heismans there is a six out of seven chance they will be failures.
If the QB is the BPA take him, if not wait until the round where the QB is the BPA. That could be the 2nd or 3rd in this year’s draft.

I may be reading this wrong but this hire signals to me that we are almost guaranteed to draft a DL or OL. It also makes me think that Lovie isn’t a bumbling idiot but a vault with a plan. Notice how several starting players were traded for not so great picks? Notice how our de facto backup was not traded? HMMMM. Notice how McCown was only the de facto starter only when we didn’t have a OC? The few weeks Tedford was around Glennon started. Maybe Lovie didn’t want MG to learn bad habits from an inexperienced OC/QB coach. Maybe he knew that MG didn’t have the mobility to stand behind our “finish line ribbon” of an o-line and didn’t want MG to get injured/PTSD from playing football. It is known that Glennon was wanted by other teams on draft day and Schiano shocked the world and pissed of some war rooms by drafting him. If we are guaranteed to draft a QB#1 then why hasn’t MG turned into a 3rd or 4th rounder by now? Lovie has shown a propensity to grab draft picks since he has been here, but not with MG. I also believe that picking #1 has generally NOT gotten you a QB of the future, but it has given you an OL/DL of the future the majority of the time. I think Lovie also thinks this.

I don’t know if you’re wrong or right but your theory is certainly plausible. If I’m reading you correctly you are suggesting that Lovie DOES have a plan and just because he hasn’t laid it out for all of us doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist.

Say what you want about Heisman winners, but I can assure you, Bryce Petty is NOT the answer. At best, he is taken mid 2nd round…and even there he would be a reach. He’s a 3rd round talent coming from a near undraftable offense.

Obviously, Atlanta having Matt Ryan over Josh McCown or Mike Glennon is huge, but without looking at advanced metrics or any of that other stuff, I’d contend that the Falcons had an even worse offensive line this season compared to the Bucs.
Yeah, Collins was a flop and the new guys didn’t quite gel for the Bucs, but the Falcons were starting over-matched rookies, Bucs castoffs and even backup TE to protect the QB, and the offense was pretty solid all things considered. I have confidence in the hire and hope either Mariota or Winston is the number one pick in April.

Okay, I read until you wrote “David ‘My Legs Are Rooted Tree Trunks…” because mobility was probably Garrard’s greatest attribute. Obviously, you don’t know what you’re talking about. Garrard rushed for nearly 2000 yards and 20 TDs and well over 4 yards a carry in his career despite not having a ton of starts.

I supplied a link to the Charles Davis piece that would have told you exactly why he thought Petty might be the next Bortles. That’s not outrageous in that Bortles has still only shown promise. Verdict is still out.
But respecting your opinion…if I told you that we simply are not going to take that 1 in 7 risk with a #1 pick that might be converted to even more picks…IE Aside from Jameis or Marcus which QB excites you most?

That is exactly what I am saying. I have been trash talking all season on Lovie Smith. But I was looking at him as a “right now” fan. Now that the season is over I am looking at him as a “over the long run” fan. I can guarantee that Lovie came in wanting to win right now but after week 4 he saw that we didn’t have a chance without an OC and he became a “next year” coach. That is why Glennon never really got a shot. Why risk your “QB of the future” getting injured/PTSD when you know that there is no “win right now” possible. He still had to sell tickets so he became a “vault” that only let out information to try and sell tickets. I love my Bucs and I DON’T want to believe that our head coach is a bumbling idiot (even though that was my perception from watching games with a “now” mentality). Lovie didn’t tank for the #1 pick to pick a QB that hadn’t even declared yet. He tanked to get a player to build a franchise of the future around (sorry McCoy you are the foundation of the now). #1 picks get you (almost)guaranteed OL/DL foundations but a #1 QB is guaranteed to not be a foundation player. I believe this is also Lovie’s philosophy based upon this Hire and his previous drafts.

Just watched the entire 2013 Oklahoma game… which shows how much stats can deceive. Baylor blew them out, Petty had nice numbers in the game… but he didn’t do much other than hit a few wide open WRs from blown coverages. He isn’t nimble, he’s more of a Tebow-type runner, he excels at throwing slants and has a decently quick release, but his arm strength is average, his pocket awareness is poor, his timing on most throws is pretty good but when pressured he’ll throw the ball up for grabs or to nobody in particularly quite often. Not an impressive tape.

I had a two hour delay in going to work today and watched several Winston games. He is ready to play in the NFL. If everything checks out with his character, perhaps a big “if”, he should be the pick, no question. It’s not often a team gets an opportunity to take a strong armed, big framed, athletic QB with accuracy, anticipation, and moxie along with big game experience. yes, he forced some balls (particularly against NC State and early against Notre Dame-two of the games I re-watched today) and at times he has a few comical Bucs of 2014 plays in him, for the most part, he is a franchise QB in waiting.
Mariota, I like. I like him about as much as I liked Colin Kaepernick when he came out of Nevada. i was telling anybody that would listen that he was the #2 QB in the draft behind only Cam Newton and that he would go somewhere between picks #25 and 43. As much as I like Mariota, like Kaepernick, he’s a project with quite a few blemishes in his game (pocket awareness, feet in the pocket, fitting balls into tight windows, he also has a few Buc QB of 2014 plays in him too, as well as that at times, half of his throws come at the LOS). I see Mariota as a late 1st rounder that will drafted higher based on his potential and reputation.

BTW, I liked Bortles coming out of college. He was my #2 behind Bridgewater, who has the preternatural anticipation and pocket awareness that is mandatory in a franchise QB. Bortles is a solid physical specimen, a gamer, and a leader. He was productive in college, beating Teddy B. head to head and showing a lot of moxie. I don’t see a lot of Bortles’ game in Petty.

Did you ever watch Gerrard play? Scrambling his greatest attribute??????? The guy was clocked at 4.82 in the 40. In the NFL that is called having stones for feet. Just cause the guy had to run for his life every game and therefore averaged a WHOPPING 20yds rushing per game on scrambles. He was also in the top 10 QBs sacked every year he played, leading the league in sacks and yards lost in 2008. So yes “rooted tree trunks”.

Somebody on one of these threads posted a CV of Bobby Beathard a truly great GM who was always an NFL maverick.
He never liked using a #1 pick if he could convert it to numerous picks.
ALL draft choices are crap shoots. If you convert one pick into three you’ve just increased your odds for success. In investing I believe we’d call that diversification.
I’ve pretty much come full circle on the QB debate with that recent discovery of just how incredible the Heisman Jinx has been on QB’s. Some truly sobering stats and probabilities. If we could convert that #1 pick into four picks…two #1’s..a #2 and a #3 I’d probably take the deal now.
If instead Lovie wants to go with Williams who by many accounts is the BPA or Andrus Peat perhaps the best franchise tackle with that top pick I’m ok now. Heaven knows we need a pass rush and we need OL help big time.

Did you ever watch Gerrard play? Scrambling his greatest attribute??????? The guy was clocked at 4.82 in the 40. In the NFL that is called having stones for feet. Just cause the guy had to run for his life every game and therefore averaged a WHOPPING 20yds rushing per game on scrambles. He was also in the top 10 QBs sacked every year he played, leading the league in sacks and yards lost in 2008. So yes “rooted tree trunks”.

Okay, you’re officially an idiot. Jake Plummer clocked a 4.9 and was extremely mobile, Freeman ran 4.95. 40 times have very little to do with a QBs mobility and ability to run. Bruce Gradkowski ran a 4.59, Blaine Gabbert ran in the 4.6’s, being fast does not make a QB mobile.
Garrard averaged 4.6 yards per carry in his career and rushed for over 1700 yards and 17 TDs. Yes, running for over 250 yards over 4X in his career does qualify him as a very mobile QB. His 10 yard rush on a designed draw play on 3rd and long beat the Steelers in the playoffs one year…and this was with the Steelers knowing the dude could run. You obviously have no clue.

The fine folks at Football Outsiders say Bortles had one of the worst QB seasons ever, let alone rookie QB season. In fact only 2 QBs on record have done worse than Bortles did last year: Bobby Hoying and Blaine Gabbert. Revolting company to say the least.
So if you’re using him as evidence that you can evaluate QBs Brandon, we should take whoever you don’t like.

I don’t care what scheme he ran in. If Tomlin called QB runs would Big Ben also be a “scrambling QB” in your book? I don’t care what you stat you want to pull out, the only stat the matters to me when determining a “mobile QB” is sacks taken and yards lost. David Gerrard was the best at that one year, number 3 the next, but always in the top 10. When you take the most sacks in the league consistently, in my opinion, you have legs of rooted tree trunks. I really like how you use 2 washed out QB’s that didn’t retire but just weren’t picked up in their prime to try to prove your argument. I was only trying to prove that Koetter could take a non-mobile, slow QB like Glennon and win. I am sorry I put down you apparent idol but he was neither good nor that mobile. Gerrard was able to get back up job’s after he left Jax so yes he was a solid #2 in my book. Just trying to show what Koetter could do with less. Sorry I insulted your buddy.

We get it Joe, you have a raging hard on for Jameis Winston. I like him too, but I’m not about to cream my pants at the thought of him quarterbacking our Bucs. In fact, I’d be rather worried if he got drafted by Tampa Bay. Because it sure would be hard to find an interesting story on JBF after Winston files a restraining order on your ass and you aren’t allowed 200 yards near One Buc Palace.
