Could Do Worse Than Greg Olson

January 5th, 2015
Former Bucs OC Greg Olson would be a nice hire as quarterbacks coach.

Former Bucs OC Greg Olson would be a nice hire as quarterbacks coach.

It is obvious that it won’t be just a new offensive coordinator the Bucs will have this month (one would hope he is selected by the time the Senior Bowl practices roll around). One would assume the new OC would select his own quarterbacks coach.

Joe just cannot imagine ill-suited Marcus Arroyo hanging around Tampa Bay, unless the Bucs need someone to fetch bagels and make coffee runs to Dunkin Donuts to stay awake during late-afternoon meetings.

In Joe’s eyes, the Bucs could do worse than bringing back Greg Olson as quarterbacks coach.

The former Chucky assistant was to be the quarterbacks coach for Raheem Morris until the unexpected jettisoning of then-offensive coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski. (What is it in the water with Bucs offensive coordinators?). Then, Olson was thrust into the void left by Jagodzinski.

While some may question Olson’s gameplans and strategy (he birthed the now notorious “Benn’d Around” play), Olson did a nice job developing franchise quarterback leaky, sleepy Josh Freeman. It was not Olson’s problem Freeman went mental.

With another rookie QB dropped in his lap in Oakland, Olson helped develop Derek Carr developed into a promising young signalcaller.

Yes, Olson is in Oakland, for now. But owner Mark Davis, who sits in line like the rest of us when he flies Southwest, is currently interviewing head coaching candidates. Presumably, Olson will soon be looking for work.

There are only so many jobs available in the NFL. The Bucs would be a nice fit for Olson to help develop Jameis Winston. It’s a good match.

Hopefully, whoever the new offensive coordinator is, has Olson’s cell phone number. The Bucs could do a whole lot worse than Olson as a quarterbacks coach.

Hopefully, whatever OC we bring in will already have a qb coach in mind that he’s worked with and been successful with.

The o-line coach concerns me more. Gotta get the o-line fixed or no qb, rb, or anyone else will be successful.

    YOUR A FUNNY GUY JOE.

Maybe that’s what the Glazers were thinking when they hired Lovie:

    “We could do worse……”

    Now they’re probably wondering….

    Simple as that…

  4. bucrightoff Says:

Oakland is going to keep him for the Derek Carr continuity so he’s not going anywhere.

  5. Gooberville Says:

No thanks.. Yeah lets get a QB coach before an OC. Let’s stupudly put a Winston comment to make it more ridiculous. Of course knowing how the Bucs hire it wouldn’t suprise me. Bucs need to get their arses in gear and hire an OC already and let him hire his own staff. We don’t need Arroyo or the O-line coach. Frankly the entire offensive staff should be fired. And why is our special teams coach still employed?

Winston is NFL ready. He doesn’t need a QB coach and can call his own plays.

No rookie QB is truly NFL ready and he won’t be calling his own plays either.

Been there done that with Olson. Was not to impressed the first time around.

There is a recipe for disaster.

Kind o a harsh statement. Seems to me that Marcus Arroyo was thrust into a lousy situation and did what he could to make the best of it. Maybe he was ill-suited but he’s a gamer.

You could make a very strong case he wasn’t even qualified for an NFL coaching internship position.

I’m still pissed at Olson for having his OL coach Pete Mangurian fired.

    That guy worked wonders here.

Surely this is meant to stoke…..

Winston doesn’t need a QB coach as much as he needs a NFL version of a guidance counselor……Too bad Johnnie Cochran is gone…..perhaps a good defense attorney would be needed.

I hope the nightmare scenario called last season’s offense doesn’t set Arroyo’s career back. He was thrown to the wolves.

  16. Snook Says:

Olson did great with Freeman in 2010. But 2011, it seemed he got away from letting Freeman scramble and move around. And/or he just went mental.

  17. OB Says:

OK Joe I know you want Winston and you keep talking about the best QB to wear number 5 in Florida, but did you notice that there was a number 5 playing defense for FSU and with our cast of characters running the Bucs they may go with your desire but draft the wrong number 5 at FSU, then what say you?

You think this can’t happen? You didn’t think McCown would play QB for ever game he wasn’t injured nor did you think the Ghost would play either.

  18. SAMCRO Says:

We’re going to hire Marc Trestman as the OC, then hire Scott Frost as QB coach and asst. OC, to groom newly drafted Marcus Mariota.

  19. CC Says:

Bucs new they needed an OC for months now. This should be done. In Lovie we bust!

  20. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

    @ SAMCRO

If the recent article on the Chicago Tribune is accurate then Marinelli wasn’t a huge fan of the Trestman hire in Chicago which COULD mean Lovie would listen to his long time friend Rod and pass on Trestman (assuming he’d even want to be the OC for the guy he replaced in Chicago). I’m guessing the Bucs look elsewhere for an OC.

  21. BB Says:

Looking forward to seeing Mariota our franchise QB play with the bucs true bucs fans support if you don’t then don’t let the door hit you on the way out

  24. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Obviously, the OC hire is taking time because the guy tgey want is in the playoffs.

  25. cmurda Says:

No thanks to Olson. As a Qb coach, I agree that’s not the worst thing in the world but we should be aiming higher. Trestman should be a hot commodity for OC and I find it both surprising and alarming that Trestman would be spotted in Clearwater Beach with McCown but without landing an interview. I fear another long retread at OC and him bringing in his old school cronies for the rest of the offensive coaching positions. This is a passing league and despite what Lovie likes to do, this needs to be recognized and Lovie needs all hands off deck when dealing with the offense.

  26. cmurda Says:

@Bonzai. I agree. It’s the only logic that makes sense. A team wouldn’t want to slow hire an O.C. unless their guy is in the playoffs. But who is the mysterious candidate? I’ll go with Rick Dennison (QB Coach of the Ravens). Can’t argue with his resume especially with Flacco having the best year of his career.

  27. The Buc Realist Says:

either in the playoffs or Lovie has been told “No” for the seventh time!

  28. Zam Says:

wait wait, Winston doesn’t need any developing remember? He’s ready to play in the NFL day one!

  29. kevin Says:

We Already has olsen on our staff as an oc. Hes an oc now. The only reason he would take a job as a qbs coach is if he sucks….which he does. So WHY?????!!!!!!!!!! Id rather have arroyo as qbs coach and I dont want arroyo sooo…….

I never met Greg Olson, but we cleaned his roof!
His wife called us to get their roof cleaned, because they were selling their home here in Tampa, so she could join him out west.

Why would Frost leave a soon to be National Champion IMO to be a QB coach for the Bucs? Nike funds that program it’s why they are even relevant, I think he’s staying or going to be a college coach elsewhere. I don’t QB coaches for the Bucs make anywhere near what he could possibly be offered elsewhere but well see.
