Bucs Interviewed Greg Roman

FoxSports.com reports the Bucs have interviewed 49ers OC Greg Roman for the same gig with Tampa Bay.
Well, well, well. Joe is happy someone with influence over at One Buc Palace reads Joe. As it seems, the Bucs conducted their first interview for the vacant offensive coordinator gig, and that was with 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman.
The Bucs’ braintrust didn’t just go to the Rose Bowl to have a few beers and check out (future) quarterback Jameis Winston.
No, the Bucs also interviewed Roman in the City of Angels, by way of Alex Marvez of FoxSports.com.
Roman interviewed in Los Angeles, where Bucs officials were in town to attend Thursday’s Rose Bowl game between Oregon and Florida State. Tampa Bay was paying particularly close attention to both starting quarterbacks — Oregon’s Marcus Mariota and Florida State’s Jameis Winston — as potential picks with the Bucs holding the No. 1 overall selection in April’s draft.
Roman spent the past four seasons working on the staff of Jim Harbaugh, who left the 49ers earlier this week to become head coach at the University of Michigan. Roman isn’t expected to follow Harbaugh back to the college ranks and is considered a hot commodity to fill an NFL offensive coordinator vacancy.
Joe thinks the Bucs simply cannot go wrong with Roman. He saved Alex Smith’s career. He groomed Colin Kaepernick. He believes in the run like Bucs coach Lovie Smith and, as a former offensive line coach with the Crows, could oversee that unit with authority, unlike ill-fitted Marcus Arroyo.
The Bucs could do a whole lot worse than Roman. You know, like, say, Ron Turner and Mike Tice. The latter scares the hell out of Joe.

I would be very comfortable with this hire. Someone that knows what it is supposed to look like and succeeded at the highest level. Get it done fellas and for eff sake keep Lovie the hell out of it.

My question is WHY did Lovie hire Tedford? Did he see the light and NOW hire an OC with a track record? If he doesn’t get this OC right, he will be in the basement for good.

Lovie Smith really doesn’t have to look too far in his search. Former Bears head coach Marc Trestman was spotted on Clearwater Beach with Bucs quarterback Josh McCown on Thursday. Speculation is that Trestman is being considered for the Bucs opening.

He would be a great hire!
If we target colleges, Scott Frost would be interesting.
Another one would be Doug Nussmeier, who was Saban’s OC before 2013 before he moved on to Michigan.

Not a fan of Roman. I live in San Francisco and 49er fans HATE this guy with a passion. They blame Roman and his playcalling for the niners’ inability to get over the hump these past few years. Considering how many weapons he had, it’s pretty sad that the Niners offense consistently ranked so low.

I’m surprised your surprised they interviewed him. They have quite a few coaches to interview. Why would you think they wouldn’t interview him?
“The interview process will start with offensive play-callers whose teams recently parted ways with their head coach: the Falcons’ Dirk Koetter, the 49ers’ Greg Roman, the Jets’ Marty Mornhinweg and even former Bears head coach Marc Trestman. Former Browns head coach Rob Chudzinski are also candidates on a vast list that also includes former Vikings head coach Brad Childress, the Chiefs’ senior offensive assistant. There are also some assistant coaches whose teams are participating in the post-season that the Bucs may wait to interview.”

I like it that he has experience with the Oline. Him, Trestman and Chud know how to deal with young QBs. Tedford leaving will turn out to be a good thing. In other words, keep Lovie far away from the hiring process.

I’m familiar enough with Lovie to know he’s all about smoke and mirrors. He’s so random I wouldn’t be surprised if he found some Arena League guy to lead our Offense. I just hope it’s someone that can add some stability to this team.

I’ve just been around a long time and I believe if you’re looking for the mouse, start with the cat! Try as we might to pick the QB for the Bucs, the truth of the matter is we will only get to jawbone with each other in the theater of the absurd while there is one person who will unilaterally make this pick and that is Lovie Smith – the cat in my analogy. I suggest we stop looking at QB stats and start asking the question – What would Lovie do?
That is why I suggest all of you to re-listen to Lovie’s words at the end of his final presser when asked his opinion of the read-option offense. Then put on your gumshoes and put some current facts together. The first two OC candidates that Lovie wanted to interview are Dirk Koetter and Mike Mularkey, the present and former OCs for the Atlanta Falcons.
Mularkey and Koetter, his successor at the Falcons both run a pro-style offense that depends heavily on the running game. Ryan had his greatest success under Mularkey when he frequently mixed in up-tempo, no-huddle style offensive plays. That sounds a lot like what the Bucs were aiming for last year with the “speed in space” offense with coordinator Jeff Tedford.
Lovie spent a lot of time with Tedford developing the concept and thought it important enough t to try and keep it under wraps before the season started. Well so much for that idea, but Lovie is stubborn and I think he is still intent on running that offense – kind of explains the Charles Sims 3rd round pick from last year. The news that the Bucs have interviewed Greg Roman adds further credence to that as Roman runs a read-option offense with QB Colin Kaepernick and RB Frank Gore.
I have been loud and clear that I think Winston is the best pro-style QB and Marc Trestman is my choice for OC, but sorry I will not get to make the pick. But if I had to guess what Lovie would do, I think he wants a Matt Ryan “with legs” and an OC that can run an up-tempo, no huddle style offense. My guess is that after seeing Mariota “gas” the FSU defense last night, he would pick Mariota and an experienced OC like Koetter or Mularkey (if the Titans allow him to interview) or Roman. From now on, I’m looking at the cat and I’ll bet that’s where we’ll find the mouse!

Have any of you watched 49ers games the last couple years? The 49ers offense has stunk for years. Kaepernick’s play has regressed. Vernon Davis same thing. Why do you guys think this guy would be so great with us? I wouldn’t be excited about this hire at all.

mariota’s style of play is similar to Colin Rand Kaepernick.

I’ve been calling for Roman since the YUCS coaching vacancy opened last year. But after seeing how conservative he got I’m not sure it would be a great thing. Unless it was really Harbaugh calling the plays.

Roman would be a great hire imo. The chance to work with either Mariotta or Winston would be really appealing to him I’m sure. Especially Mariotta. He is like Kap except he is extremely accurate on the run. After the game he had last night. I truly believe he is our guy and hope to God the Bucs management end up feeling the same way!! GO BUCS!!

Colin Kaepernick’s passer rating has steadily declined every season since he became the starter. Is that the kind of “grooming” we want for our new signal caller?
Plus, of all the OC candidates we’ve been hearing about in connection with the Bucs job, Roman is probably the least innovative. No thanks.

Joe why are you so infatuated with Roman you complain complain complain about the Bucs play calling all year and all you do is talk about he would be a great hire did you not watch San Francisco offense this year Frank Gore would run the hell outta the ball in the first half and he wouldn’t get a carry in the second they won some games by kicking nothing but field goals and you talk about what he did for Alex Smith but look at his current qb……Greg Roman CHILD PLEASE!!!!!

Dirk Koetter is noted as being the second most influential coach to Mark Helfrich the head coach of Oregon. Considering they worked together multiple places it makes since. I think that is a clue. Greg Roman implemented aspects of the pistol for Kap, another clue.

I’d like to see Chuzinski as the next OFFENSIVE Coordinator, He did wonders for Steve Smith, Jonathan Stewart,and DeAngelo Williams,and He did one heck of a job tailoring an offense that fit with Cam Newtons strengths.
Considering the job he did with the empty cupboard that was the Cleveland Browns, l’d call him a safe hire,and an innovative offensive mind that the Bucs need.
Imagine what he could do with two 1,000 yard receivers,a 6’5 tight end,and a stable of young running backs to go along with Winston, or Mariota.

Whoever they get for OC, they need to pair it with the QB they draft and leave them together for three or four years. The true Hall of Fame quarterbacks over decades all have stability with coaches in common.

Don’t kid yourself, the reason we drafted Evans is because he’s a younger VJax – and THAT’s because VJax won’t be here next season.
Not sure if the Sequoia WR corps, matched to a pro-style/spread-read-option, is still the plan. That’ll depend on the OC.
…but you can get used to waiving good by to Vincent Jackson. He’s not the receiver we brought to Tampa. His pay is high, his ability is evaporating, that’s the wrong end of the scale.
There are a LOT of needs along the o-line – and still missing that elite RDE.
So many question holes on this roster on offense, too many to solve all at once.
First things first – we need an offensive coordinator – and Greg Roman is a GREAT one. As for as Kaepernick: his regression wasn’t on Roman…nor was it on Harbaugh. It kinda looks to me like Colin has hit his ceiling. After two shots at the Superbowl leaves you exhausted and your QB regresses…it may be yet another case of diminishing returns. We’ll see.
Roman or Chudzinski – at this point I’d be fine with either.
Now, if you see either Koetter or Weiss get hired as the OC…dude, we won’t be drafting a QB – those guys coach old school, drop-back QB’s. The only guy remotely close to THAT kind of QB is already on our roster – Opie ‘kid’ Dynamite his-self…Mike Glennon.
Come to think of it – that’s probably the way it will go. Just like Lovie – the offense won’t be sexy, it’ll just allow the OC to field an average, non-risky offense, pretty quickly. Focus on the edge rush, or a nice phat offensive left tackle!?
Yep,that’s no doubt what was going on – Licht didn’t go scout Mariota/Winston, nor Roman for that matter (just a curtesy)…I’ll bet if you check the hotel registry, you’ll probably find that either Weiss or Koetter were ALSO in Pasadena…

Kaepernick is from one of my alma maters. I like the guy, but he is not a great prostyle QB. Mariotta is an upgraded version of Kaepernick, but we don’t have Frank Gore, their OL, or their defense.
Jameis Winston has been labelled as a young Ben Rothlisberger (perhaps in more than one way if you remember his headlines that he would like to forget).
In my little world of the theater of the absurd Winston is the man. Last year he had great receivers and a good defense. This year not so much.
Get him a decent OL. Let a healthy Doug Martin run behind them with a QB that can kill you with his arm and hurt you with his legs. He is not a Mariotta gazelle, but even cape buffaloes are fast enough.

Joe. Why do you keep insisting that Winston is the clear choice? I’m sorry but how can you ignore the HUGE warning signs about this kid? His immature decision making is not going to change after you give him $35 million dollars and a bunch more stress and responsibility to handle…
