What Is Mike Glennon Thinking?

An intriguing take on Glennon’s body language Sunday

It wasn’t long ago that Lovie Smith, after he made such fanfare out of acquiring a journeyman quarterback (who he cut in Chicago) as if it was the second coming of Kenny Stabler, made the eyebrow-raising proclamation that Mike Glennon was his quarterback of the future.

This, of course, after he deemed Glennon second string.

And not long after Josh McCown was hurt, and Glennon led the Bucs to one of their only two wins, Lovie again benched his quarterback of the future.

Since the Bucs have been eliminated from the playoffs, Lovie openly has pined for more snaps at middle linebacker for Danny Lansanah as a test drive for 2015 (Mason Foster is a free agent after the season), and already has benched under-performing left tackle Anthony Collins.

Yet McCown, a turnover machine, continues to shat the bed of the Bucs offense week in and week out. McCown didn’t even complete half his attempts yesterday and shot-putted a fumble 25 yards downfield.

(Hell, people across the nation — including here in the Tampa Bay area — are crucifying Johnny Football who completed more than half of his attempts yesterday. But McCown? Eh, no problem. Who needs a quarterback, anyway?)

Yesterday, the “Custodian of Canton,’ eye-RAH! Kaufman of the Tampa Tribune, twittered out a dispatch claiming the body language of Glennon suggests frustration.

Joe doesn’t think Glennon is the type to start a dust-up with Lovie on the sidelines. But Joe does sympathize with Glennon. The kid has been jerked around in the past year.

First, he was benched for a journeyman while simultaneously lauded as the savior down the road (why not a savior now, Joe doesn’t quite understand). Then after he leads a comeback win over the Steelers in Pittsburgh, the kid is benched (again).

If Glennon is really the quarterback of the future and not some empty title, then play him. If he’s not, trade him. It’s only right and fair.

If Lovie doesn’t think Glennon is the answer at quarterback, there is no shame in admitting so.

Lovie ,the Christian, is pissed at Glennons brothers Tweet…..Lovie continues to say McCown gives “us the best chance to win”….is just another example of his ineptitude..

  2. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

Glennon will have the last laugh, I predict he lasts longer as a NFL QB than Lovie Smith will remain a NFL head coach.

  3. mikeh Says:

    @TOESONTHELINE- I agree 110% with u on that.

  4. jo_mama Says:

Lovie knows that if he puts Glennon in, he wont tank the game on purpose like McCown has been told to do.

Both Lovie and McCown need to be banned from the NFL and the Bucs need to lose a draft pick.

This is TOTAL BS and they are not even hiding it.

  5. Wombat Says:

Maybe Lovie stepping down may give us the best chance to win… I am sure Schiano would have eked out more than two wins out of this team, plus he would never have blown up the o-line or overpaid for Johnson, as he would have kept Revis… anyhow, role on the Draft and the FSU/ Oregon game!!!!

  6. Phil Says:

We all know Glennon isn’t the quarterback of the future. He will either be traded or cut next year. IF we can cut the best player on our team (Revis) Glennon doesn’t stand a chance. Glennon is probably wishing his brother hadn’t of open is mouth.

  7. SteveK Says:

I feel the lack of change at the QB position should lead to the firing of Lovie.

You can’t tell me that McCown is better, when he is simply not.

On top of that, I have zero trust/confidence in Lovie to make the “right” move when he is unable to apply any logic this this matter.

So, Anthony Collins can be benched, same with Mason Foster, but McCown gets to go out there and continue turning the ball over?

    Fire Lovie/ Hire Harbaugh.

    Lovie does not make sense.

  8. SteveK Says:

    Phil,

I am not jiving with your logic, you mean to tell us that Lovie is benching Glennon because Glennon’s brother ran his mouth?

You mean that Lovie would rather watch this team crash and burn, then play the best possible player at said position on Sundays?

    Lovie should be fired.

  9. passthebuc Says:

Lovie is a [Nah, nah, nah. That’s a bit over the top, sorry. — Joe], there is nothing about him that I respect. He’s just a sound bite waiting to happen.

  10. buccinfan Says:

It takes mccown over half a season to win one game. Against a horrible washington team that now lost 6 in a row. It took glennon 5 games to to beat a damn good pittsburg team. Hmmmmmmmmm

  11. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Johnny Football was playing his first game. He was nervous. Give the kid time. I still think he’s a bust, but its not fair to fully judge him…yet.

    @JoeJoes Fungi Nails
What does being a Christian have to do with anything? What? You have a hate on people with morals and prefer to create a new username to express it?

  12. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

Lol Joe, had to get in that part about Johnny Goose Egg didn’t ya? 😉

  13. tweezydakidd Says:

Love is such an idiot!screw him! He brought his dusty arse in here, busted up the online, brought in stinkers (including coaching staffs) cut revis, cut, zuttah, kept bowers, wouldn’t bring in a real freaking OC, starts a guy that has more ints than TDs! Screw love!!!!!!!!!!!!! N good evning

  14. bucrightoff Says:

I imagine Glennon is thinking only a few more months until I’m out of this dumpster fire.

  15. jo_mama Says:

[Sorry. None of that Or Joe will lock this post. — Joe]

  16. Buccfan37 Says:

Lovie is going to do things his way, damn those who question his tactics. If it can be f’ed up Lovie will take pride in doing just that. I’m sick of the bulldog McCown show. But I suspect MG would get beat all the hell up and back if served up at this late date. The recipe to beat and embarrass the Bucs is an easy one to master.

  17. tmaxcon Says:

The only thing Glennon is thinking about is what kind of Headphones he prefers for his radio show. Another tough question he must be thinking about is, does he want a high back chair or a task chair for when he joins his brothers radio show…

he and lovie will both be out of the league in 2 years.

  18. jo_mama Says:

[Sorry. None of that Or Joe will lock this post. — Joe]

  19. bucrightoff Says:

Tmaxcon you’re hatred for Glennon is so absurd you have to be a massive Freemanite. Glennon will be in the league in 5 years and probably even 10. At worst he’ll be a top level backup. David Carr made it 10 years for Christ sakes.

  20. Patrick in VA Says:

I really can’t wait til we start winning again so we can get better quality commentary in here. The venom spewing in here is clearly just people piling on and folks that are projecting their own self loathing on to the players/coaches. It’s so tedious to read. I’d love to look through here and read people who are actually utilizing their brains and debating things based on stats, analysis or something other than just hate fueled ignorance.

  21. Mitch Says:

I second that, Patrick in VA.

  22. Vball John Says:

All the answers we want, all we need, and certainly all we deserve will be supplied by Lovie during his hour long talk with TJ Reves on this week’s show … NOT. These shows hosted by the Buccaneer Network don’t even take calls anymore, the reason being they cannot control the content of the callers, they can for the texters, Emailers, and tweeters. The shows are nothing more than an extension of the dialogue the Bucccaneers spew forth … garbage, evasion, and lack of accountability. At this point, it’s beyond McClown’s fault, beyond Arroyo’s, beyond even Lovie’s fault. At this point, after 15 weeks of garbage football, it’s the Buccaneers ownership’s responsibility to be honest with the Buccaneer faithful, before there are no more !!! Be honest with us, we deserve at least that. We the Buccaneer faithful, and all citizens in fact built your stadium, we buy your merchandise, we watch your team, we defend our support, now it’s your turn … be honest with us. Give us answers as to why we have continued to start perhaps the worst QB in the NFL week after week. Telll us why we shed from the roster a complete offensive line only to replace it with a line that would be second to what Wisconsin has on it’s squad this year. Tell us why our D line continues to provide opposing QBs ample time to hit the receivers who seemingly know all the openings in our fabled Tampa Two. Finally, tell us why our coach can make contradictory statement after contradictory statement to the press and not be held accountable ? Tell us Ownership … tell us.

  23. tmaxcon Says:

bucrightoff — I am not going to apologize for my hatred of Glennon’s GAME it’s not personal. I want to win and 8 is not a winner nor does he have that “IT” factor that makes players around him better. We will have to agree to disagree about his future in the league. And to be clear, I am no freeman fan. I find it completely repulsive when people who have that much potential / talent waste it. Freeman was a mental midget.

  24. tweezydakidd Says:

    Right on @ stevek

  25. Supersam Says:

I have yet to read an article on this website about how picking Mike Evans instead of Johnny turnover was the right desicion. God he looked awful yesterday, he made McCown look like a pro bowler huh joe?……

  26. bucrightoff Says:

Right Tmax, but saying Glennon will be out of the league in 2 years is over the top absurd. Manziel might be out of the league in 2 years, Glennon has a long career ahead of him, even as only a backup.

  27. Matt Says:

Calm down guys, we are clearly tanking on purpose to secure the number 1 pick. We arent playingGlennon bc doing so would get him hurt or reduce his trade value. The Texans purposely tanked last year and are highly pissed Clowney is injured. A healthy Clowney is good for a couple more wins. Well don’tbe shocked if we do something similar to the Texans or trade back for a multitude of picks and come on to the scene like gangbusters next year.

It is blatantly obvious we are tanking, stay patient and lets all pray together that GMAC LVD and ME (hell it is time to admit JSmith has skills too) stay healthy. Personally I am most looking forward to seeing individual matchups next week… clay matthews vs Dotson, Banks vs Nelson and Lansanan at mLb vs the best QB in the league. Look at it like that for next year.

  28. tmaxcon Says:

bucrightoff — It’s not the first absurd opinion that I have had over the years and I am sure it won’t be the last before I am fish food.

You yourself said 5 to 10 years. He already has 2 years and I said 2 in this post and 3 in several other posts which equals 4 / 5 so we are not that far off. I’ll gladly buy you a beer and a shot if he makes it ten… LOL…

  29. tmaxcon Says:

bucrightoff — to be honest I was wrong about JF.. I originally wanted him to be a buc but the more I have watch him play I feel that he is much better served taking the Doug flutie route and heading up to Canada.

  30. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

I hope they trade Glennon, he deserves better than Lovie.

  31. AK Says:

Mike Glennon is better than Bruce Gradkowski, the latter whom has now lasted nearly 10 years as a backup and has made and even won a few spot starts. Glennon should have no problem being that type ,heck, Josh Mccown is in his 12th year. No reason to argue about this. Of course he could always leak his medical records to get out of Tampa if he wanted…

  32. Nose Tackle Says:

Why get a non mobile qb crippled and or embarrassed behind the worst o line in the nfl ? He’s either our back up next yr or trade bait. And no one will trade for damaged goods but the bucs themselves.

  33. ddneast Says:

Getting thebGlennon mob stirred up ehh, Joe.
Glennon wasn’t benched after the Steelers game, he was benched after two games where it seemed his play was regressing, especially against a very beatable Browns team where he underthrew a very wide open Mike Evans not once, but twice.
I have no problem with Love starting Glennon because he doesn’t want to see the team get McCowned again, but let’s use the facts when we talk about Glennon’s demotion.

  34. ddneast Says:

V Ball, The only people the Bucs need to be accountable to is their season ticket holder which I seriously doubt you can count yourself as one.

  35. Patrick in VA Says:

They aren’t accountable to anyone. They’re a source of entertainment. If you’re not entertained then stop buying the tickets. You don’t get to call up and yell at them because they aren’t doing a good job. You show your support by buying tickets. If you don’t like the show, stop watching it. They don’t have to subject themselves to fan abuse because they’re unhappy about the way a football season is going. Get real people

  36. Gooberville Says:

Glennon had is shot and shat the bed. This on him for not playing better when he had his shot. Has Mccown sucked ? Yes he has but Glennon could have made it impossible to go back to McCown and failed .

  37. utahbucsfan Says:

Josh mccown is are best chance to win= first pick in the draft. If we lose out this year are we guaranteed the #1 pick?

  38. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Its seems to me that the only scenario that makes any sense is that Lovie & Licht have made the decision to trade Glennon. They don’t want him injured or take the chance that he performs disasterously behind this sorry Oline.
Glennon will command at least a mid-round pick and it is likely they have made the decision to draft a QB to compete with McCown for the starting job.

To sit Glennon for punitive reasons doesn’t make sense…..it was his brother’s comments.

The idea that there is a conspiricy between Lovie & McCown to deliberately lose games is absurd.

  39. Tmaxcon Says:

    Patrick VA

when professional sports franchises accept public funds for stadiums etc they do become accountable to a certain extent.

Season ticket sales is a very small revenue source for NFL teams when compared to TV revenue and merchandise sales.

  40. BirdDoggers Says:

Lovie and Licht view Glennon as a tradable commodity. No reason to play him behind a paper thin offensive line and get him hurt. That’s my best guess for not playing him. If Lovie is the coach next year and they don’t draft a QB, citing Glennon as the QB of the future, then it will be official. Lovie is delusional.

  41. LutzBuczFan Says:

We saw enough of McCown after the first three games, just like we did Byron Leftwich in 2009. Still no franchise QB….

  42. Patrick in VA Says:

@Tmax – None of that means that the players and coaches should have to endure fans calling in to the shows that the players are, again, doing for the fans’ entertainment and have to listen to them yell at them about not being good enough at what they do. If the stadium being funded by taxpayer dollars wasn’t something that would be beneficial for both the team and the city then the city wouldn’t have done it. If they would then it’s the fault of the people of the city for putting shady people in place as elected officials. Don’t act as though them getting tax dollars means that the city owns them now. It was the city investing in itself to generate more revenue and more tourism.

  43. Broy34 Says:

Patrick in Va consider yourself promoted to Lieutenant of this site. Finally a reasonable, rational soul. And lemme guess u want a QB first round

  44. Tmaxcon Says:

    Patrick—

I used the words “to a certain extent” . Don’t put words in my mouth. If the players, staff and coaches do not want to deal with fan backlash when they don’t perform they should not accept money for call in radio shows or public appearances where they are compensated. No player or coach should ever be subject to verbal abuse but criticism is fair game. To many people confuse different opinions and legit criticism with hate which is just bs

  45. tmaxcon Says:

another factor that you need to consider is when the sleeze bag politicians invest public money in a sports franchise it is no different than any other investment and the politicians have a right to hold the franchise accountable to ensure the public reserves the best return on their investment.

  46. tmaxcon Says:

    ^^^^ receives not reserves

  47. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Patrick in VA.

Yes Patrick and that’s what frightens me most about the #1 Pick. Can you imagine the rabid FSU fans if we DON’T draft Jameis? I hope the Noles win a second straight title. I’m not a Jameis hater. I just think he’s a huge gamble off the field.

The division created by the QB controversy will not end after the draft. The haters from both sides…FSU fans and Marcus supporters and those in favor of an OL or DL pick will constantly hurl their bile and venom at whichever guy gets selected and has an off day. I’m afraid it could get even uglier still Patrick!!!! I almost wish we didn’t have that #1 pick.

  48. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    BTW Taxmcon

My post was not directed at you but rather at the larger group. The real haters know who they are and I agree with you that simply having a negative opinion about someone’s athletic performance or off field transgressions is not being a hater.

It’s the name calling and ad hominem attacks that differentiate simple disagreements and venom.

I’m thoroughly disgusted by Lovie’s performance this year. But he IS A CLASS ACT and I’m comfortable giving him another year. Even though like Father Dungy I find him a boring coach and dislike his style I have nothing but great PERSONAL respect for both Lovie and Dungy.

  49. Patrick in VA Says:

There’s a difference between criticism that comes from a knowledgeable person within your field who has years of experience that has made them an expert and criticism that comes from ignorant fans who want to take a single player to task for what is a team game. What’s more, those players are executing the plays that are being called in by the coaching staff. That’s not to say that the plays being called in are bad because there may have been a blown assignment. You see, we as fans have no idea what went wrong on any given play but folks want are beside themselves because they can’t call and “criticize” the players about it. The players accept appearance fees for events and radio shows because they’re there for entertainment. If you had a clown at your kid’s birthday party would you berate him and embarrass him in front of the crowd? No, you’d call the company and tell them about your experience and ask for your money back. Unfortunately, you can’t get your money back for the tickets you bought for a football game but you can stop spending the money on future games. I just don’t get how folks think that tarring and feathering the players on the sidewalk on Dale Mabry will do anything to help the team get better. Do you honestly think it’ll help win games if fans were able to call in and tell the players that they made mistakes? They’re watching the game film with professional football evaluators. They get it

  50. ihateloviesmith Says:

this whole season has been a nightmare from the hire of lovie his coaching staff his O.C. his D.C. his FA’S, his QB, his stubborn unwillingness to change QB’s when it s futile to go with his handpicked man, who is nothing more than a turnover machine. his refusal to hire a competent O.C. after tedford bailed on him. every thing this man has done including his double talk, about his QB of the future. should be impeachable. in my opinion he is disingenuous at best. and an out and out liar at worst. he has proven he can not be trusted by the fans, players ,and it should be apparent to ownership alike! well it is all about the glazers now, is it not? do they ever plan to put a winning, competitive club on the field. or just keep giving us the same old brand year in and year out. they sure got fleeced, with this group of thieves. because they sure did con you boys

  51. Mike Glennon Mob Says:

Mike Glennon hasn’t unfolded his arms in about an hr. Either he is feeling a chill or he’s trying to stop himself from confronting his coach

Nonsense. Mike Glennon would never publicly confront Lovie Smith.

  52. dontlikethedirtybirds Says:

I disagree with most of you. I don’t think Glennon will be traded next year. They had an opportunity to trade him this past year and didn’t. Here is what I think.

Scenario 2. McClown will be cut and Mariota/Winston will be drafted and will be the back up to Glennon until (which ever one we draft) is ready to be the starter.
Scenario 3. Glennon will be traded and Mariota/Winston will be drafted and will be the back up to McClown until (which ever one we draft) is ready to be the starter.
Scenario 4. We trade away our top draft pick and get several other ones and McClown and Glennon remain on the team with McClown the starter.
Scenario 5. We trade away our top draft pick and get several other ones (Petty is drafted in the 2nd or 3rd round) and McClown is cut and Glennon remains on the team as the starter.

The Bucs will continue to loose until they replace the entire offensive line.Any rookie QB won’t survive behind the present line. Then you must scrap a defense that allows the opponent to always win the time of possession. You will have to replace almost the entire team and Lovie to be successful. So please tell me how drafting a QB with the first pick will solve all the problems that Lovie created on both sides of the ball.

  59. Matt Says:

With the #1 pick L&L get unprecedented flexibility in the draft to stock this roster with much needed wholesale youth. For starters, I could see the jets hiring an offensive minded coach and them trading up with us (we have a rich trade history with jets with Meshawn and Mevis) and we get their 1st and 2nd this year and next years 1st and they grab a qb. Can you imagine Winston in a big market like NY?! My goodness that would be big time publicity. If not Winston imagine Mariota with Harvin and CJ. In this scenario we have a hedge for a top selection next year from Jets should said QB be a flop and this gives us a better shot at Hackenburg should our rookie be a flop as well.

If Winston somehow someway is able to stay another year then the price for the #1 pick skyrockets bc of only 1 Top tier QB left.. think about that scenario…. I cant even imagine what it would cost the Eagles to trade up with us if that happens. 3 1sts 2 2nds & 2 3rds??

Tresman is gone in Chi and he’ll come here and team back up with McCown (as a bridge to our rookie we draft) and the Saints will trade for Glennon to groom as Brees’ replacement.

The point is, there is extremely high value and flexibility in the #1 pick and we MUST secure it and that’s what we are doing.

Think about it, set expectations low year 1, draft rookie qb year 2 (get to use hey i had a rookie qb as an excuse for another year) then contend year 3.

If we slip to say pick 3 or 4 and both qbs are gone and then we draft Gregory and hes Gaines Adams 2.0 we made zero progress and we’re back to drawing board. There’s very little upside to a pick like that and a lot of risk to Lovie. You all can’t tell me you arent worried about that happening. To me, the only pure 4-3 DE pass rusher is Dante Fowler Jr and his value is middle of round 1. So trade back for more picks and take Fowler or Cook or just take Johnson, he’s the dog that we needed since Bennett left.

  60. Matt Says:

  61. Atlanta Buc Says:

Wow! How can we really judge our QB’s this year? We have had a very weak offensive line, injured RB’s, no involvement of TE’s in the passing game and the most important thing no one seems to be talking about, we have absolutley no offensive coordinator!! We need a good offensive coordinator before anything else! We need to start tampering with other teams as soon as possible, fines be damned!! Any suggestions??

  62. TBFAN813 Says:

Glennon should’ve been traded a long time ago now they’re just trying to keep his trade value as high as possible by not playing him. These are professional football players that get paid exorbitant amounts of money to play a kid’s game if they cannot deal with a little criticism from those that pay their checks nobody cares. This team has sucked for 15 years and people are tired of being fed bs by coaches and ownership. I believe fans have made their voices heard by not going to games but the Glazers continue to trot out this horrible product on the field because they still make millions of tv and merchandise. This year has been a complete and utter failure from the beginning and I for one am just ready for it to be over.

  63. tgreg Says:

This board lacks any logic at all…let’s see Glennon sucks and is at best a backup but we don’t play him to preserve his trade value and play a fool instead?

Occam’s Razor: simplest explanation is usually true. Lovie is an idiot.

Personally I would relish Glennon traded to the Saints and beating the Bucs twice a year. Lovie deserves it.

“Tell us Ownership … tell us.”- Tell us that you made a mistake in this hire, and that you are going to rectify this error by firing this entire coaching staff and start from scratch before it all gets any worse….. Please!

They will either make glennon the starter next year or trade him before the draft and get a qb in rd 1. I hope they secure top pick because they can prob even trade back to pick 3 and still get their guy.

I’m also hoping they can get a good offensive lineman or two via free agency and another out of the draft

The blind hate is astounding, yet speaks volumes about some “fans” here. MG has performed better than ANY QB drafted in the last 2 years, all while NEVER getting starter reps in TC, and playing for 2 of the WORST Buc teams in recent memory, yet has never looked like the bumbling, fumbling “leader” we are trottin out now on a weekly basis.

I am really confused why this quarterback issue seems to keep plaguing our team. In the pool of available quarterbacks, 1 name springs to the top of the list, Tim Tebow…
I know there are many people who don’t agree with is personal lifestyle, but what does that have to do with his performance on the field? He was a proven success for the Gators, and would have similar success if he was surrounded by a team, coaches, and owners that appreciated him. besides, he couldn’t be any worse than McCown.

  69. Patrick in VA Says:

I truly cannot wait until Tebow is too old to play anymore so we don’t have to deal with his name being circulated. There’s a reason he’s out of a job. There’s a reason nobody has wanted him since he came out of college. McDaniels got caught up in the hype machine around Tebow just like Haslem got caught up in the hype machine around Manziel. Both were supposed to be winners despite their lack of talent. Both have been woefully unimpressive at the NFL level. You can talk about Tebow winning in the NFL all you want but make sure you mention in there how badly he played in the first 55 minutes of every game and how unbelievable his defense was. Just stop it.

glennon is garbage and glennon is gone. the reason he isn’t playing is because he is slower than a toddler walking for the first time, we cant block and he is only an asset to the bucs as trade bait, he assests to the team have nothing to do with that acme cannon that looks him look like a noodle arm, he’ll get his wish and get traded and sit the bench for some other team and be a stop gap until some other horrible team drafts a quarterback

    Who cares.
