Time’s up for a member of the Bucs’ O-line, says NFL Films guru Greg Cosell.
In a matter of minutes before “98.7 The Fan” was shut down by the sports radio station’s ownership this month, longtime NFL Films chief Greg Cosell was on their airwaves talking all things Bucs.
Cosell made it clear that Josh McCown, per the film, was nothing more than backup fodder, but Cosell also had firm words for the offensive line.
In particular, Cosell singled out perennial Pro Bowler Logan Mankins, saying he’s at “the end of his career.” In October, Cosell described Mankins’ play as a “detriment.”
Joe’s not sure Mankins is totally washed up, but it’s clear to Joe this is the end of Mankins’ Buccaneers’ career. And it’s definitely the end of Mankins’ streak of five consecutive Pro Bowl seasons.
The 32-year-old Patriots’ icon just doesn’t play anywhere close to his $6.5 million salary. There’s no way the Bucs should hold on to him for that price — and he may not be worth much more than the league minimum. Remember, Mankins was a little bitter when Joe asked him about his play.
Joe can’t knock the late-August trade for Mankins, though. The Bucs were desperate after Carl Nicks couldn’t return, and after Oneil Cousins and Jamon Meredith freaked out a nation of Bucs fans who saw them collapse at left guard in preseason. It is a shame, though, that the Bucs coughed up Tim Wright, who’s got a long NFL future.

You wonder if a player can drop in performance that much in a year or was he held up the other linemen that much? I guess desire to play enters into it also because he went from a winning team to a losing team.
We did learn a great lesson, never trade with the New England with the present coach.

Hey Joe, do you happen to know why 98.7 the Fan was shut down? I was sooo pissed when all I hear is Christmas music! Well I’m done listening to sports radio in this area. As far as Mankins, PLEASE!!!! Anyone who thought that this guy coming in was going to be some sort of lift was begging and GUZZLING the Lovie Smith Kool Aid!! The record of this putrid team is indicative of the sorry ass coaching staff, the sorry ass front office, the sorry ass ownership, which collectively can’t evaluate talent to save their lives. Hence the regurgitated crap we all see on the field week in and week out.
Just business on the radio shutdown. Bad ratings = no money = no more station.–Joe

Tim Wright has been better than Mankins straight up…and we threw away a 4th round pick to boot. Utterly horrific trade.

I’m happy for Tim Wright, great kid. He gets to play with a great QB and is going to have a long and happy career. Too bad for the Bucs, but at least he got away from this mess.

And they gave away Zuttah, who is having a Probowl year, and gave away the farm to get Mankins because of L&Ls horrendous off season player shuffling. Yea, that’s who we want running next years draft…

Basically wasted a high 2nd on Austin S-Jenkins-Baxter-Bierny as well. Compounding mistakes have lead to this dumpster fire. Somehow the Bucs will win today or againt the Aints to botch the high draft pick to boot.

Sounds like a horrible idea – “Lets give up a mediocre tight end and a 4th round pick for a 5 time pro-bowl guard”. Anyone who thinks that sounds like a bad idea after what happened with Nicks is either a liar or an idiot.

Icing on the Mankins cake? There’s near $3.5 in cap penalty if we cut him. He’s owed $10m next season. Terrible trade in retrospect.

The mistake happened before the trade for Mankins. It was made when L&L assumed that Nicks would be back, just like they assumed that Tedford would be OC and that any of their FA acquisitions would improve the team. I think that the Glazers have more than enough evidence to strip Lovie of all managerial power and fire Licht after the Saints game for general incompetence; its so bad that perhaps a Vegas inquiry should be called as the numerous blunders almost amount to tanking/throwing games from the coaching standpoint….

You’re right. Even the Bucs at one time fleeced Lovie on a trade. Remember that we traded putrid Gains Adams to the Bears for a 2nd round pick. I don’t recall what that pick turned into, but the fact that Lovie gave up a 2nd round pick for a 7th round talent tells you everything you need to know.

Considering he had 570 yards and 5TDs last year on a Schiano team (he’s utterly horrible as a coach right?) and with Glennon throwing him the ball (who’s likewise utterly horrible yeah?), I don’t know if he’d tear it up, but there’s no doubt he’d be putting up similar numbers this year. We threw away a productive player to get an aging, overpaid player from New England (the NFL’s biggest red flag)…and for fun we threw away a 4th round pick with it too.
New England is the model NFL franchise. We’re the model dumpster fire. I wonder why that is.

Not to mention that Wright was an undrafted free agent, who didn’t play all 16 games, and had better stats than ALL of our current tight ends combined. I hope they trade Glennon to NE too.

Why does Licht seem to escape any criticism for all the horrific personnel moves made this offseason? Besides drafting Evans almost every move this guy has made has backfired.

I figure that patriots knew that mankins was on the decline that’s why they wanted to get rid of him. If I remember correctly we called about their backup right guard and ended up w mankins. So no I wouldn’t have done the trade. Something sounded real fishy about that whole situation and like everybody said b4 we knew all free agency that there was chance nicks wouldn’t b back. So I fault l&l for stupid trade and stupid free agency. All goes back to keeping zuttah penn and Joseph. Should have never got rid of those 3
