Second Quarterback All But Doomed
December 28th, 2014You want to know why Joe was all but on his knees that the Saints would rally from 13 down so the Bucs could have the first overall pick in the draft? Take a look at the names below.
With the No. 1 pick, it is the Bucs who get to choose their quarterback of the future. They do not have to settle for second banana.
Joe did some research. Far more often than not, the second quarterback picked in the draft has been a miserable failure in the NFL. Only two quarterbacks the past 10 years picked second have been successful in the NFL, thus far (both Super Bowl winners).
Take a gander at the list below and if for some reason you are depressed about today’s loss, this will bring sunshine to your dreary afternoon.
2014: Johnny Football
2013: Geno Smith
2012: Robert Griffin III
2011: Jake Locker
2010: Tim Tebow
2009: Mark Sanchez
2008: Joe Flacco
2007: Brady Quinn
2006: Matt Leinart
2005: Aaron Rodgers
That right there should lighten the mood for any Bucs fan.
And yes, Joe would rather have Johnny Football than Josh McCown.
December 28th, 2014 at 5:51 pm
Joe, I agree over McCown. Just not in the first round. Wasted pick.
December 28th, 2014 at 5:52 pm
How about you post a list of Heisman winning QBs the last 25 years. Makes you want to think about Brett Hundley.
December 28th, 2014 at 5:52 pm
Yep the in 2004 there was manning then rivers that one worked out ok
December 28th, 2014 at 5:53 pm
Trade down TWICE in the first round….let the rebuilding begin…QB in 2016
December 28th, 2014 at 5:54 pm
Aaron Rodgers has a super bowl
Joe Flacco has a super bowl
Tebow won a playoff game
RG3 was great until Shannahan exploded his knee
I don’t think this really provides great evidence.
December 28th, 2014 at 5:56 pm
Joe..stats are for losers…one can manipulate them any which way suits your theme….Jameis..is the conductor on the Titanic
December 28th, 2014 at 5:56 pm
Aaron Rodgers could come to Tampa Bay and I believe Lovie would find a way to turn him into Josh McCown. Lovie has a history, and that history is awful offense and good defense. I’m not talking about a small sample either. He has 11yrs of awful to mediocre at best offenses. The NFL has also changed rules to make playing defense harder. Given Lovie’s history I believe our franchise is doomed to either be awful or, even worse, year after year of 7-10 wins. I would hate to win just enough to pick in the 20’s every year but not enough to make playoffs.
December 28th, 2014 at 5:56 pm
Is there a worse QB than Trash McCown?
December 28th, 2014 at 5:57 pm
Mariota or Winston bring one on there better then mccown!
December 28th, 2014 at 5:59 pm
The Bucs did their very best to end this season like a turd in the fan’s punchbowl. Thank goodness Drew was able to call upon his drastically eroding talents and pull out one with under 3 minutes to go.
Then the Bucs and ‘ol Josh did their thing with two straight sacks, the last one a safety. Couldn’t have ended more appropriately or in more Buc’s fashion, with the line and their useless QB giving up the win for the 14th time this season.
Now it is time for Jason to get his people together, start wheeling and dealing to unload this roster of crap and rebuild it with Winston and the rest.

Johnny Hangover!
December 28th, 2014 at 6:02 pm
Congratulations Lovie Smith you will now get your franchise quarterback. I am happy for you considering the way you were done in Chicago!
Laughs for all those who want negative things to happen to coach Smith. Peyton has his brees, smith has his ryan, rivera has his newton, the guy from greenbay has his rodgers, bellicheat has his brady, dungy had his manning, and Lovie will have his qb: J. Winston!!!!
December 28th, 2014 at 6:02 pm
Mariota time!
December 28th, 2014 at 6:03 pm
Johnny Bust.
December 28th, 2014 at 6:04 pm
All of those who claim to leave if Lovie drafts WINSTON or won’t renew their season tickets, then just leave there will be others who will take your seats with better attitudes! CONGRATULATIONS COACH SMITH!!!
December 28th, 2014 at 6:04 pm
Fire Lovie and get a real coach.
December 28th, 2014 at 6:06 pm
I have season tickets…Ray Perkins….can not wait to call my account rep tomorrow !
Fire Lovie
December 28th, 2014 at 6:07 pm
there will be others who will take your seats
_____________
That may be the funniest thing I’ve read in a while.
December 28th, 2014 at 6:09 pm
Nope. Have yet to read (from an NFL/former NFL suit) anything good about Hundley.
December 28th, 2014 at 6:12 pm
I haven’t hear anything good about Hundley, but I’ve seen the Heisman winners list and Cam is the only one who even remotely qualifies as a franchise guy and he ain’t that.
December 28th, 2014 at 6:19 pm
Just say no to running QBs
December 28th, 2014 at 6:42 pm
It didn’t take long for the RIDICULOUS garbage to start flowing out of this site. Your chances of ridin’ Winston’s jock took a huge hit when we lost this game. Not surprised you don’t realize this. The chance of Lovie takin Winston over Marriota are VERY low, IMO. If we picked 2nd, IMO, Marriota’s off board, and Smith has to take Winston…not anymore.
December 28th, 2014 at 6:43 pm
May not be Lovie’s choice to make. He doesn’t own the Bucs.
December 28th, 2014 at 6:54 pm
true Joe…but are you insinuating the “owners” make the pick? I don’t see Licht making the call for Winston….IMO
December 28th, 2014 at 6:56 pm
to be clear…I think Mariotta the safer pick, with Winston having higher ceiling and much lower floor….bigger risk. Very difficult decision…VERY
December 28th, 2014 at 7:06 pm
Brett Hundley is to inconsistent and that has been his biggest knock.
December 28th, 2014 at 7:34 pm
This is dumb. I get the point you are trying to make Joe, but the point is not made.
December 28th, 2014 at 7:37 pm
You think after we hire an OC, we can get an idea which QB we take? Eh, how you like that.
December 28th, 2014 at 8:24 pm
4 Qbs in the history of the NFL have had more passing TDs than Mike Glennon in their first 19 games,.. and all but one had considerably more Ints. Why are we not talking about the fact that we have Matt Ryan already on our team and our idiot coach refuses to play him?
December 28th, 2014 at 9:25 pm
Winston plays for a superior college football team and had 27 interceptions against 64 touchdowns. How many interceptions do you think he might have in the NFL? Interceptions are already at 42% of his touchdowns in college. He is a loose cannon and a turn over machine with an attitude. If he is drafted by the Bucs look for at least 25 interception and many more years of losing. Trade the first pick and draft as many offensive lineman as you can if you want to win in the near future.
December 28th, 2014 at 9:38 pm
Joe you might as well add Akili Smith, Crying Leif, and Rick Mirer to the 2nd qb taken list…. But remember too that simply having the #1 overall does not guarantee a winner as the following names prove: Vinny Testaverde, Tim Couch, Jamarcus Russell, Jeff George, David Carr, Sam Bradford and Alex Smith…. Hopefully the Bucs beat the odds and select a cornerstone and not a bust and do not trade the pick away unless its a lights out deal with multiple #1s and second rounders….
December 29th, 2014 at 1:46 am
Joe you will be wrong about Winston landing here, as you were wrong about Manchild.
Also you people are INSANE if you think Lovie has any wiggle room to not take a QB first. It’s the only option he has that will buy him some time. He’s not stupid and ownership wont afford him the choice.
December 29th, 2014 at 2:06 am
So you are Jason Licht?
December 29th, 2014 at 2:12 am
Nope damn straight I’m not.
But just like I told you last time you were wrong and you had some smart answer you will be wrong about this one too 😉
December 29th, 2014 at 2:14 am
My crystal ball never lies.
Sorry Joe, it is what it is. 🙁
December 29th, 2014 at 2:49 am
Let’s trade back with the Titans…take there 1st and second rounders this year. Then trade back with the Jets. Get their 1st and second rounders this year and next year. Then build this team to last with some up front lineman on both sides of the ball. Give Glennon some time and we can win some games.
