Report: Dirk Koetter On Bucs’ OC List

December 30th, 2014
Koetter

Former(?) Falcons offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter

Retread alert!

ProFootballTalk.com is reporting the Bucs are interested in Dirk Koetter as a potential offensive coordinator — if he gets fired from the same gig in Altanta.

After Mike Smith was fired as Falcons head coach yesterday, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported Koetter cleaned out his office.

To Koetter’s credit, he led the NFL’s seventh-ranked offense with Jacksonville quarterbacks David Garrard (12 starts) and Quinn Gray (four starts) in 2007, when he won a playoff game. A ferocious defense helped that Jags team, too.

That might have been his greatest accomplishment.

After getting fired in Jacksonville in 2011, Koetter, 55, moved on to Matt Ryan in 2012. He had a top-10 offense and a trip to the NFC title game that season, and another top-10 offense this year.

Joe’s not high on Koetter, but at least the experience is there. The former Boise State and Arizona State head coach played quarterback for Idaho State. And Koetter has plenty of professional experience with a bad offensive line. That could serve him well transitioning with Tampa Bay.

  1. Patrick in VA Says:

We could do worse. I’m still onboard for Trestman though.

  2. BirdDoggers Says:

Koetter doesn’t have the best track record of developing QBs. He’s ok, but the Bucs could do better. Trestman would be a more compelling option.

  3. Brandon Says:

I’m mentioned Koetter here before…as well as Trestman. I like Koetter’s abilities to get the most out of his players in the passing game. When he had Gonzales, the TE was a huge part of his attack, when he retired, Harry Douglas took on an even bigger role as the #3. He knows what it’s like to deal with a terrible offensive line. Also, he helped young mobile QBs look good while they figured out the NFL game (Garrard) even if they never quite got it.

Koetter is at or near the top of my list.

And Matt Ryan is pretty darn good, BirdDoggers. Here’s something to toss out there…

…if Lovie is known for not developing offense in previous years, why would you want his former offensive coordinator to come here? It already did not work once.

  5. LargoBuc Says:

I wouldnt mind Rob Chudzinski. He helped Cam transition in a year with no offseason. He would be our best bet if we draft Mariotta. Thr only con with Chudz is the possibility he would keep Warhop around.

  6. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @Brandon

We happen to have a potential “Gonzales” TE on the roster too. 😉

I think Koetter is the best fit for us.

The Falcons run a quick moving offense.
Koetter groomed Matt Ryan, who if Brees were to retire would be considered the best in our division.
He knows our division rival pretty well, and there are always advantages in that.
    He’s got experience.

  7. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Koetter is the choice if you are not name dropping. Going for “name” coordinators could end up dooming this team.

    It’s a valid point.

I think Koetter could do it too.

  9. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

And Koetter has had some success with non-mobile, strong armed, pocket passing QB’s like Matt Ryan, so that bodes well for your Buccaneers QB of the future Mike Glennon.

  10. bucrightoff Says:

Falcons aren’t letting him go unless they hire an offensive HC. But I see them hiring Rex Ryan and keeping Koetter so this is all a moot point.

  11. BirdDoggers Says:

    @BuccaneerBonzai

Trestman wasn’t on Lovie’s staff in Chicago as an offensive coordinator or in any other capacity.

  12. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Ah, my bad.

  13. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I really hope the Falcons hire Rex Ryan. I really, really hope so. He’ll destroy Matt Ryan within a couple years.

  14. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

Whichever OC we get they will have a task of rebuilding the O-Line and getting a QB, unless they truly like Glennon.

Here is what Pat Yasinskas had to say about Cousins:

Offensive tackle Oniel Cousins: He wound up starting late in the season on a very bad offensive line. Cousins isn’t even a quality backup. The Bucs need to use the offseason to improve the depth on their offensive line.

Currently, they have 11 Bucs on UFA. Will we resign any of them? Majority are defense so Lovie may let them go.

  15. ManzielMadness Says:

Wouldn’t mind this move or treat an if we drafted Jameis, if we go after markets Id take a look at Greg Roman

  16. ManzielMadness Says:

    Or Trestman*

  17. ManzielMadness Says:

Go after Mariota* I hate autocorrect sometimes

  18. Killian Says:

Dirk Koetter does not get me excited. Scott Frost and Marcus Mariota does get me excited…

Why can’t the Bucs ever be creative in their hires? Tedford was somewhat exciting, but obviously that didn’t work out. Scott Frost’s offense set a record for total offense in his first season as Oregon’s OC. This guy is going places and it would be sweet to keep him and MM together. He also played for the Bucs during his NFL career.

  19. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

@Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston

What are the names of those UFAs? I know a few I think.

  20. Buc-O's 82 Says:

Chud or Trestman, the Dirty Birds offense for the last 2 years was just that – offensive

  21. Ryan Says:

Could do worse, could do better too

  22. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @Killian

Loved you in Iron Man 😉

  23. bucrightoff Says:

Why would Rex Ryan destroy Matt Ryan? Cause he had human excrement as QBs in Sanchez and Geno? Like somehow it’s his fault they’re garbage. More than likely, Rex on the Falcons is a nightmare for the division as you know in time he’ll have them as a top 5 or so defense, and the Falcons already have a good offense. I want him in Oakland, not Atlanta.

    Like when they hired “Lovie”!

  25. Aaron Says:

I was hoping that after we started hearing the Offensive Coordinators of interest – we might get an idea of the QB the Bucs might be leaning toward.

Then I read this quote from Koetter – (The Falcons ran the “Pistol” this year)

“When I think of pistol, I think of three things,” Koetter said. “I think Colin Kaepernick, Cam Newton and Matt Ryan. Those are three different styles of pistols.”

(not sure of copy write laws)

  26. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

    Bonzai,

    Da’Quan Bowers
    Adrian Clayborn
    Oneil Cousins
    Larry English
    Dane Fletcher
    Mason Foster
    Mike Jenkins
    Lawrence Sidbury
    Luke Stocker
    Jason Williams
    Major Wright

  27. lightningbuc Says:

What is Koetter’s philosophy on “speed in space”?

  28. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

Falcons are wanting to interview Josh Daniels

  29. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

    Damn auto-correct…Josh McDaniels

  30. biff barker Says:

    Buc-O’s 82 Says:

Chud or Trestman, the Dirty Birds offense for the last 2 years was just that – offensive.

In fairness they gave up an awful lot to bring in Julio Jones and resigning Ryan.
The OL was really in the tank thereafter.

That said, Trestman and Chud would suit me just fine given their QB experience. Take Mariotta, dump McCown and let Glennon start next season.

  31. The Buc Realist Says:

I would not be surprised if Lovie, hired Rod Marinelli as DC and moved Leslie Frazier to OC!

  32. Bk Says:

He was good enough to drop 56 on the Bucs.

  33. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

Doesn’t that auto spell piss you off Skyline…it sure gets me a lot too (sometimes even creates words!) anyway whoever the Falcons hire the Bucs will still have the 4th best HC in the NFC South. That’s a bummer 🙁

  34. Zam Says:

I don’t know much about him, but looking at the stats (for losers): With a good RB, they had a good run offense, and then with a good QB, his teams had a good pass offense. I like coordinators who can change attack based on strength of personnel.

Bingo!!! Although I am concerned he wants a head coaching job after their run this year.

  36. DB55 Says:

    Joe

Did you say Boise st? Sold! Let’s draft their beastly RB while we’re at it. An all Broncos backfield. I like it.

  37. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

@Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston

    Thanks 🙂

Da’Quan Bowers – Probably History, unless they want him as cheap depth at DT…which I doubt.

Adrian Clayborn – Injuries could hamper him, so if resigned, it should be as depth. Would come cheap.

    Oneil Cousins – GONE

Larry English – GONE (though I like him, we need better)

Dane Fletcher – Will likely resign

Mason Foster – GONE (Depth-wise, he would be okay, but he’s injured too much to start; would come cheap too)

Mike Jenkins – GONE – Never should have been here, but Lovie gave him one last chance.

    Lawrence Sidbury – GONE

Luke Stocker – GONE, but maybe not

    Jason Williams – GONE

    Major Wright – RESIGN

That’s plenty of openings. Not to mention they should cut a few other guys as well…and trade a couple.

This is absolutely the best idea.

The only downside to this is that if he comes in and tears it up, we’ll be looking for a new OC in a year or 2.

Lovie would have to give him the assistance HC position along with it and pay him close to what he could make as a HC.

  39. port richey george Says:

I would rather see the bucs get one of the fired head coaches or a coach that will be fired after the playoffs as an 0-coordinator. the falcons stunk this year. matty ice had one of the top o-linemen in last years draft and a pretty good 0-line. plus good wide receivers and running backs. the offense stunk in most games. I wouldn’t take this guy as the new 0-coordinator.

  40. Rich Says:

I really can’t imagine Lovie letting Scott Frost run an offense even remotely like Frost would want – unless Frost agreed to only go backwards on drives following ones in which the offense scored too quickly.

  41. JJV Says:

When the Bucs finally hire a competent head coach, his staff of coaches will be as well. The bottom line is Lovie remains. We are hoping for miracles that all gets better with a new OC. Our leader will still be making all the decisions and doing things his way. And we all saw the results of that.

  42. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Remember- Mike Mularkey was the previous Offensive Coordinator in Atlanta- So Dirk Koetter walked into a turn Key situation. Atlanta’s offense was already one of the best in the league. Outside of 2007, Dirk Koetter’s Jacksonville offensive ranked no better then the Mid-20’s

  44. lion Says:

All this Lovie bashing is starting to get old, he is an easy target, the scapegoat. These Bucs fans are about as myopic as they come. Lovie Smith regularly won 10 games a year in Chicago, but all fans see is the one bad year he had here. Wait till he hires the right OC and draft the franchise QB and then all of you will be proclaiming him your savior by this time next year, but the funny thing is it will be those same fans that called for him to be fired and said he is incompetent. Then it will be right back on the band wagon. I have faith in the Bucs going forward, especially with the ability to finally draft a franchise QB and given the right offensive coordinator this team can easily be a contender next year.

  45. lion Says:

On a side not I believe there are way better options out there still, Koetter would be the candidate that you would have to settle on if you couldn’t land the big fish.

  46. Connor Says:

“Lovie Smith regularly won 10 games a year in Chicago, but all fans see is the one bad year he had here.”

Making stuff up eh? Lovie only made the playoffs 3 out of the 9 seasons he was in Chicago and his offenses were mediocre at the very best. Usually they were dreadful. Bucs fans are not stupid; they know Lovie has never developed a QB in his life and never produced a respectable offense. And there’s no reason for concern?

  47. Self-proclaimed GM Says:

Had Atlantas defense not been so bad, they would have had a better season and Smith would still have his job along with Koetter. He’s better than Arroyo. Get him, a shiny new QB and the best lineman available unless there is another player available that you just cannot pass on.

I’ll say this, I like what I saw from Charles Simms the other day. If that guy put’s on another 5-10 lbs of muscle he will be a dangerous asset to the team. I just hope we keep all of our weapons on offense. This team has lacked continuity for years. New line, New QB….but keep the weapons. Keep the playmakers. Let them all fight together next year to prove they can do it. After a season like this they’ll be ready to raise some hell next year. That is if we don’t run the ball up the middle 45 out of 60 snaps…
