On The Cusp Of History

December 19th, 2014
Nearing Bucs lore.

Vincent Jackson nears Bucs lore.

The Bucs offense has been a dumpster fire this year. Not much of a running game. Sketchy blocking. Quarterbacking that would make any cheerleader play ostrich.

Despite this — despite this! — the top two Bucs receivers have had outstanding seasons. Mike Evans may be the rookie of the year.

Though it took teams long enough to start defending him with double-coverage, Evans has still found ways to score touchdowns, often with his impeccable footwork to stay in bounds.

Then there is Vincent Jackson. One could argue Jackson is overpaid and is nowhere near worth the salary he will be paid next year, if the Bucs keep him, just a hair south of $10 million in 2015.

Then you look at the numbers and sort of do a double-take.

If Johnson can rack up 69 more receiving yards in the next two games, Johnson will have put together three straight Bucs seasons of 1,000 or more yards a season. Of all the players the Bucs dropped a treasure chest of Team Glazer cash on in the past three seasons, it’s easy to say former Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik scratched off a winning lottery ticket with the Jackson signing.

There has been only one other receiver in Bucs history to pull off this feat of 1,000-yard seasons, and that was Joey Galloway. He had a much better quarterback to catch passes from in Jeff Garcia, though he dealt with slugs like Bruce Gradkowski, too. It’s a shame Chucky claimed he couldn’t find a way to get both Galloway and Antonio Bryant on the field at the same time, geez.

    This is the one guy that does everything right since the day he got to Tampa. Model citizen, great role model for Evans, great performance on the field, and hasn’t missed a game yet (knock on wood). I don’t care how much he makes, he’s worth it, and more.

    Who the Hell is Johnson???

  3. DB55 Says:

    Pay the Man. 83 business reasons.

  4. cmurda Says:

    @gatrbuc

    Lovie said WTF and decided to convert Michael to receiver. He clearly has learned the man doesn’t belong on a defensive line.

  5. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

    Who is this Johnson fellow you keep talking about?

  6. jo_mama Says:

    QB’s who Mike Glennon is better than FYI 29 TD’s to 15 Ints.

    Josh McCown
    Blake Bortles 11 Tds to 17 Ints
    Bridgewater 11 Tds to 10 Ints
    Jake Locker 27 tds to 22 Ints
    EJ Manuel 16 Tds to 12 Ints
    Chris Ponder 38 Tds to 36 Ints
    Mark Sanchez

  7. jo_mama Says:

    Mark Sanchez 78 Tds to 78 Ints
    Geno Smtih 21 Tds to 31 Ints

    Trade Mike Glennon to any of these teams.

  9. Stu Laake Says:

    Johnson? Oh that’s right Vincent changed his last name so we couldn’t distinguish who was having all those drops…9 million plus for a supposed good role model for Evans.

    CATCH THE DAMN BALL!

  10. theodore Says:

    If JJ Watt can do it, why not Michael Johnson? Same level of talent.

  11. HawaiianBuc Says:

    @jo_mama,

    Football is not a stat sheet unfortunately. Stats don’t tell the whole story. You don’t think every football team in the league has studied Glennon? You don’t think they have multiple people that do that? They do, and they have seen the same thing most have seen – he’s not a starting NFL QB. Glennon suffers mightily under pressure. He is an absolutely horrible deep ball thrower. Is he better than McClown – absolutely. But that doesn’t mean he’s a good QB. In fact, you could be horrendous and still be better than McClown.

    ————————————

    Watt and Johnson shouldn’t even be in the same sentence.

    Regardless, you pay for results not talent.

  13. HawaiianBuc Says:

    @Stu Laake,

    Are you being sarcastic, or just stupid? He leads the team in receptions and yards for the last 3 seasons! I’d say he’s catching plenty of balls.

  14. Jim Says:

    Dump the bums and pay Jackson.

  15. jo_mama Says:

    FYI Josh Johnson and Bruce Gradkowski are STILL in the NFL.

    Josh Johnson Salary $730,000
    Bruce Gradkowski Salary $1,550,000

    Josh Freeman’s Salary = ZERO

  16. biff barker Says:

    Joe, the 1000 yard stat is partly because we can’t run the ball, don’t throw to the TE’s or RB’s and the slot WR receiving role is non existent.

    Not taking anything away at all from VJax or ME13. We desperately need to resign Jackson.

  17. Ray Rice Says:

    Big V-Jax is a keeper regardless. YUCS are in no position to let quality productive players leave. In regards to Savage Mike, as much as I would want to see him rookie of the year I think ODB in NY is well deserved of the recognition as well.

    At the begining of the year Brady Suffered under pressure and was all washed up. If Brady Suffers under pressure then I guess anyone can suffer under pressure.

    The Bottom line is, Last year the Bucs SUCKED. We had No Tight Ends and Wide Receivers with favorite pass time was dropping balls that him them in both hands.

    When its all said and done Touchdown to INT ratio is a very important Stat that everyone should be concerned about.

    FYI Glennons TD to Int ratio is equal to Joe Montana.

  20. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

    Now I know why Johnson only has 3 sacks. He has been playing receiver for us as well.

  21. Patrickbucs Says:

    @jo

    Can you please get off Glennon’s jock bro? Comparing him now to Montana? Get out of here with that garbage.

  22. HawaiianBuc Says:

    @Jo_mama,

    LMAO!!! You just compared him to Montana, thus further proving my point of how ludicrous stats can be. As for Brady, he had like 2 bad games. I’d say he’s got a little better body of work than Glennon. Glennon has put together maybe one full game in his entire career, against an Atlanta team that had quit.

    Again, why aren’t other teams as smart as you? Why aren’t they beating down our door to get him? What’s your answer for that? Why aren’t the Buc players leaking to the media that they want Glennon to play? Do your stats show you that he can throw the deep ball?

    If you give him 8 seconds to throw the ball and 3 hall of fame WR’s and 2 exceptional TE’s and Jim Brown as his RB, he could be an efficient QB. Wake me up when that becomes a reality.

  23. Ray Rice Says:

    Joe Montana LMFAO! Wooooooooooooooooo! (Rick Flair voice)

  24. HawaiianBuc Says:

    @jo_mama,

    I’m giving you some serious advice here – just let this one go. You’ve already embarrassed yourself. Don’t make it worse by trying to defend it, because it just makes things worse. There’s no shame, I’ve done it many times. I think most of us have. Seriously dude, Joe Freaking Montana!!!!

  25. gatrbuc17 Says:

    jo mama was simply illustrating how stats can be construed to one’s desire

  26. Patrickbucs Says:

    @hawaiian

    Good advice.

  27. chipbuc Says:

    Dont worry Patrickbucs, Glennon is gone after this year. So we wont have to listen to this crap anymore!!!!

  28. Buccfan37 Says:

    Keep Jackson because without him this team takes a huge loss in productivity. As far as Glennon, I have’nt seen enough of him to even begin to judge his potential. The MG haters here are just full of crap. MG can make all the throws effectively and still remains the Bucs QB of the future. If Lovie said it, does that mean it is true?

  29. HawaiianBuc Says:

    @Buccfan37,

    You mean all of the throws, except the deep ball right? When are the other teams going to start beating down the door to get him? I never get that question answered.

    Don’t confuse coach speak with the truth. Ever.

  30. jo_mama Says:

    Here is the problem with your arguments.

    While the body of work may not be there yet for a full comparison to Montana and may never hold up when its all said and done. At least there is something to work with. Glennon’s TD to INT ratio is great.

    You can’t say that about any of the QB’s I listed.

    If by all accounts everyone agrees that Glennon is a much better option than McCown. How can you find fault in any support for Glennon to play for are Team?

  31. Buccfan37 Says:

    Why would other teams be beating down the doors to get MG when the Bucs are’nt parting with him? And yes, Glennon can connect with all the throws.

  32. Zam Says:

    To cut V-Jax and use the money on free agents will end up with a worse team. That’s what it all boils down to.

    Is he overpaid? Yes. Do you keep overpaying him? Absolutely.

    That’s the nature of the new NFL. Rookie wage scale means you re-sign your good players and ditch your crap ones. We have a team that stinks right now because it’s built out of other teams’ offal.

  33. OB Says:

    Vjax is a leader and role model, we must keep him. Johnson is the ghost so you never see him catch the ball nor the runner and almost never the QB.

  34. buccinfan Says:

    Is it me or are offensive stats completely overated? 1000 yard seasons arent as tough as they use to be with the nfl trying to turn the league into an offense flag football game.

  35. Teacherman777 Says:

    Keep V-Jax!!

    He is best MAN in Tampa Bay!!

    Mike Evans needs him!!

    And bring back Streeter for next season!!

  36. HawaiianBuc Says:

    Jo_mama,

    I tried to help you, but you refuse. You still ignore that he can’t throw the deep ball. He’s an overall very inaccurate QB. Look at his completion %. How does that compare? Why don’t other teams want him? You keep thinking he’s Montana or Brady, and the rest of us will keep laughing at you.

  37. DB55 Says:

    It’s about time someone realized glennon is as good as mont…. Laughing too hard couldn’t finish the sentence.

    Glennon = Goat #rotf
