Lovie Changed Tune On Coordinator Search
December 30th, 2014Joe thought it would be prudent of Lovie Smith to invest time during the bye week to sniff around for offensive coordinator candidates.
So back in October, Joe asked Lovie if he would do that, and the head coach’s reply was the opposite of what he said yesterday.
Here’s the exchange with Joe and Lovie on Oct. 14.
JoeBucsFan.com: Coach, do you plan to invest any time during the bye exploring potential offensive coordinators for next season?
Lovie Smith: Absolutely not. What I’m trying to do right now, is get our football team, this football team ready right now. As far as next year, of course we won’t be doing anything like that. We’re doing everything we possibly can, coaching staff, player-wise to play better once we come back out of the bye week.
But yesterday, Lovie said he’s been looking for an offensive coordinator throughout the season. That’s not what he said in October.
Here’s Lovie’s Monday quote, as transcribed by the Bucs’ media relations staff.
(On when he will start the process of searching for a new offensive coordinator)
“Since we didn’t have an offensive coordinator throughout the season, I knew – as the year went along, the plan initially was to have an offensive coordinator on our staff. So I’ve been looking throughout. Of course evaluating coaches on my staff and, of course, I’m a football fan, just looking what’s happening in our profession too.
Joe’s not sure why the head coach contradicted himself. At this point, it’s not important. But Joe finds it interesting and, therefore, worth sharing.

Non story..coach talk during season. He’s not going to make the current staff look bad by publicly saying he’s looking for a new OC.
December 30th, 2014 at 11:08 am
I guess he had to save face during the season. Doesn’t matter tho, just as long as the hires the best candidate.
December 30th, 2014 at 11:09 am
Lovie Lied. I am shocked!
December 30th, 2014 at 11:13 am
“At this point, it’s not important.”……The key sentence to this subject. In other news sometimes its foggy outside.
December 30th, 2014 at 11:14 am
Ummmm. I would say he didn’t contradicted himself. He didn’t do any interviewing during the season. He may have spent some time researching. Big difference.
You might want to re-read what was written here. –Joe

Love you sly fox. Next thing you know he’ll be telling us Glendon is our QB of the future. Oh wait….
December 30th, 2014 at 11:19 am
I guess he was supposed to say “Yes, I have no confidence in my staff and the search has already begun to replace Arroyo since I know he is over his head”.
For example, Lovie easily could have said, “as with everything aspect of the team, I’m always pursuing all avenues to improve our football team.” –Joe

Joe, the only conclusion I can come to at this point, I see it as you being racist against Lovie Smith. At least that’s what Al Sharpton has alluded to regarding your negative bias towards Lovie Smith.
Dude, that’s beyond ridiculous.–Joe
December 30th, 2014 at 11:28 am
Lovie is so so unlikeable …
December 30th, 2014 at 11:30 am
I think he was speaking about priorities there. While he was aware of the need and kept his eyes open, I doubt he was making time each week to search for an OC.
When the need is there, you are always “looking”, but not always actively doing so.
I see no lie at all. It’s all a matter of perspective.
December 30th, 2014 at 11:32 am
To Lovie….there is probably a difference between “exploring” and “looiking”……
December 30th, 2014 at 11:33 am
You also have to keep in mind that Lovie is not the kind of guy that would blatantly undermine the confidence of his team or staff by saying “such and such isn’t going to get the job done, so we’re going to replace him.”
Expecting that would be unrealistic.
And he did, on numerous occasions, make “I’m always pursuing all avenues to improve our football team.” type of statements, Joe.
December 30th, 2014 at 11:36 am
The double talk is concerning.
Instead of lying, why not just dodge the question and not answer? Belicheat style.
December 30th, 2014 at 11:38 am
Anyways, what does it matter? Do you not want there to be a new Offensive Coordinator?
He’s doing what’s needed. Can’t we be happy with that? If he wasn’t, you, me and everyone else would be upset.
I think people are looking to speak down on Lovie regardless of what he does.
Just to clarify, Joe, I do not think you have a grudge against Lovie. Not at all. But there are some things you accept in the NFL. Coach speak is one of them. It’s part of the game.
It’s like, if Lovie is dropping hints that he wants Winston, he probably really wants Mariota.
December 30th, 2014 at 11:39 am
Stop making things up. Thank you.–Joe

“Per a league source, the Buccaneers have interest in hiring Koetter to fill the void created when Jeff Tedford developed a heart ailment just before the start of the season.” – Mike Florio
Dirk Koetter. I called it yesterday. Perfect fit. He runs a fast paced offense with the Falcons and he is good at grooming a young QB.
Once again…I prove I know my stuff. 😉
December 30th, 2014 at 11:42 am
btw, on the off chance the Bucs read my suggestion and were inspired by it, I am willing to relocate and work for the organization 😉
December 30th, 2014 at 11:43 am
HEY LOVIE – check out craigslist! might be something your looking for.
December 30th, 2014 at 11:46 am
Lovie is a liar. He can’t help himself. If Lovie speaks the truth its an error on his part.
December 30th, 2014 at 11:47 am
You know, I think all these liar accusations are the same person creating user names.
December 30th, 2014 at 11:48 am
I’m pretty sure that Lovie was just making sure that line of questioning wasn’t going to be something that he’d have to deal with every week for the rest of the year.
December 30th, 2014 at 11:50 am
How could Lovie or any head coach have time during the season to find an offrnsive co. Even during the bye there is so much game planning and film study and player evaluation going on I dont see how an NFL head coach would have the time. If it were as simple as calling Chan Gailey or whoever dont you think it wouldve been done.
December 30th, 2014 at 11:55 am
I can’t really see this as much of a story. Coaches don’t often tip their hand as to what they are doing or thinking behind the scenes. Whether he’s just started looking for a new OC now, or he’s been doing all season long, the important thing is to find the right man for the job, so they can start rebuilding this pathetic offense!
December 30th, 2014 at 11:59 am
Lovie just gives Happy Talk so you can’t believe anything he says.
December 30th, 2014 at 11:59 am
It’s not his job to be honest with the media, few football coaches are. Jim Zorn is an example of an honest football coach, and he was roundly blasted BY the media for doing so.

The infamous Lovie Double Check!!
Saying a lot of nothing – Hahahahaha 364 days to go until this clown is gone.
December 30th, 2014 at 12:13 pm
I suspect you will be disappointed in 364 days, Architek. Or eating crow gladly.
December 30th, 2014 at 12:30 pm
Lovie is a mess. If there weren’t $15 mill more reasons to stay…I bet he’d quit. Everything he’s done has gone wrong. I don’t see it getting any better either.
Oh well.
December 30th, 2014 at 12:43 pm
You can fool some of the people some of the time….
December 30th, 2014 at 1:12 pm
Love’s double talk has become legendary unfortunately-
Bears fans & Media would pull the hair out. Because it seemed like, every time he spoke he’d contradict himself. He is great at playing coy, about not letting information out. Because he speaks without EVER saying anything. So you’ll never have to attend a press conference or listen to audio feed. Why would you? Your gonna get the same Ole BS everytime…Lol
December 30th, 2014 at 1:13 pm
I get the impression that Lovie isn’t a high-IQ guy.
December 30th, 2014 at 1:18 pm
I think he evaluating Arroyo. The jury is in.
December 30th, 2014 at 1:58 pm
How do you know when Lovie is Lying, When he is awake.
December 30th, 2014 at 2:12 pm
So Lovie lied…what a shocker. Does he ever tell the truth?
December 30th, 2014 at 3:04 pm
And this guy’s job is SAFE??? lol
December 30th, 2014 at 3:12 pm
Joe, Lovie Smith is a LIAR. You know it and everyone knows it. Its not just coach speak. Coach speak means speaking in a manner that doesnt reveal much but id DOESNT mean lying. Lovie Smith has been lying all year because he doesnt know any better which is shocking given how long he’s been a HC in this league.
December 30th, 2014 at 3:22 pm
I love listening to the, ‘LOVIE DOUBLE TALK”. It very entertaining. Unlike the “unwatchable product on the field”.
December 30th, 2014 at 4:05 pm
Yeah, because what Lovie really should have done is demolish any shred of confidence that Arroyo had when we were technically still in the hunt to turn things around. How about drumming up some credible nuggets on who Lovie has made or will make contact with to fill our vacant OC spot as well as other coaching moves (Marinelli?). Give us some substance please!
