Jameis Watch: Memphis Man
December 8th, 2014Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, national champion James Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon and Josh McCown.
It’s Joe’s daily nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback to wear No. 5 ever in the state of Florida.
The Jameis Watch sure is a lot more exciting now that your beloved Buccaneers own the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 draft — for now.
The draft gurus are starting to earn their paychecks, typing up mini mock drafts. Dane Brugler, of CBS Sports, took his turn and sees Winston as a proud member of the Tennessee Titans, assuming they can cling to the No. 2 overall pick.
2. Tennessee Titans – QB Jameis Winston, Florida State: The Titans are a team with problems all over the roster, but that’s especially true at quarterback. Tennessee fans will likely be weary of another top-10 pick passer given the results of Vince Young (2006) and Jake Locker (2011), but Winston is worth the gamble and would give Tennessee a cornerstone to build around on offense.
Brugler has the Bucs picking some dude named Mariota.
December 8th, 2014 at 9:03 pm
What about “Scherff” watch….him or Andrus Peat could very well be our guy…..then Bryce Petty.
December 8th, 2014 at 9:07 pm
The best to wear 5 in Florida is Freeman and until the alleged raper plays a down in the NFL and surpasses 4,000 yards in a season why bring this crap up every week. It’s old, dumb, and very boring. This dude has bust all over him..
Joe quit embarrassing yourself like you seem to enjoy.. Didn’t the Manziel teach you anything? Or even accusing Lovie of being reckless and sending Mccoy back in game when it was agreciously reported that he had a busted knee cap.. You’re stories and opinions are really off this year.
December 8th, 2014 at 9:07 pm
I hate to admit that Joe was right about the QB situation.
Maybe a slightly more talented kid could have been the difference to win
5 or 6 games and have the offense moving in a positive direction.
…or maybe the line would just get him pummeled.
No doubt that we’ve suffered immensely losing Tedford.
December 8th, 2014 at 9:08 pm
At this point, I’d take Mariota over Winston, unless our OC is someobe like Chudzinski who would fit Winston perfectly.
Winston has proven that he is a loose cannon, despite having the rare ability to carry a team on his back, a lot of times this season he has had to do that because he put his team in a hole to begin with.
I’d still take him if he declared, but IMO his best interest should be to stay at least another year at FSU.
December 8th, 2014 at 9:15 pm
Yeah.
Mariotta.
Drafting Winston would just feel dirty.
December 8th, 2014 at 9:21 pm
No trade down our oline needs a major rehaul! No qb can handle that pressure…yes no qb there no point of sending a rookie qb without a oline and running game we have neither!
December 8th, 2014 at 9:24 pm
Successful qbs have a good online and back… just look at russel wilson he has lynch.. kapernick has gore.. both have great oline and backs… joe back me up here!
December 8th, 2014 at 9:24 pm
I don’t think we suffered from losing Tedford. I think we suffered because we hired him. I never approved of the hire personally.
To be honest, I don’t care if its Mariotta or Winston…so long as its the one that has the most success. I think that’s what we all want.
December 8th, 2014 at 9:25 pm
Nashville Joe…. Not Memphis
December 8th, 2014 at 9:25 pm
Nate, kapernick is not doing well at all.
December 8th, 2014 at 9:32 pm
Memphis Man? You do realize the Titans play in Nashville, right?
December 8th, 2014 at 9:35 pm

Great idea, draft a top 10 OT at #1 overall then pick up Kevin Kolb 2.0 in round 2.
December 8th, 2014 at 9:36 pm
For those who keep calling for a pole between QBs, I just saw one on another site:
Marcus Mariota – 662 votes – 82%
Jameis Winston – 149 – 18%
December 8th, 2014 at 9:41 pm
Mariota and let’s install the spread offense I’m done with boring bucs Sunday’s!
December 8th, 2014 at 9:42 pm
No Brandon…trading down and then drafting him….so much value with that #1 overall pick.
December 8th, 2014 at 10:11 pm
Watching Brady’s arm last night and Rodgers’ tonight after witnessing Trash McCown’s weak stuff yesterday you have to wonder what they were looking at when they hired this sad sack. We need a guy that has an elite arm…I don’t care who, Mariota or Winston or someone else but this Trash McCown train wreck cannot end soon enough. We have never intentionally started a worse QB in our history that I can think of.
December 8th, 2014 at 10:36 pm
Just curious for your guys pining to trade down and draft lineman. So you see no need to have a starting caliber QB on our roster?
December 8th, 2014 at 10:53 pm
Thanks Bucfan for bringing some sense into the discussion. Why would anyone want to trade down when you have a franchise QB staring you in the face.
December 8th, 2014 at 10:54 pm
I love seeing you guys say things like “other than being able to put a team on his back…I still don’t want him.” Sheesh tough crowd.
I want to win. I could care less what he does off the field as long as it’s not illegal. I just want to win. Mariotta isn’t a sure thing. Winston is. He a sure winner.
December 8th, 2014 at 10:58 pm
Bucs need to trade that pick for more picks then draft Petty. Bucs have needs and holes all over the field
December 8th, 2014 at 11:00 pm
STOP FALLING IN LOVE WITH THESE ONE READ AND RUN QB PLEASE!!!!!!
Marcus Mariota(onereadandrun) < Jameis Winston(prostyleoffense)
December 8th, 2014 at 11:02 pm
No you don’t trade the pick! We need a elite prospect desperately!!!
December 8th, 2014 at 11:06 pm
Nope we is keeping that pick. You are correct Architek.
December 8th, 2014 at 11:15 pm
Honestly, neither QB candidate wows me that much more than the other. Jameis puts the team on his back to carry them out of the hole he’s put them in…not sold.
@Kalind 2/3 of the things Winston has got flak for have been illegal….
Regardless, you don’t trade the pick. The fan base would riot if you got anything less than what the Redskins gave up for RG3 (even more than WAS gave up since it’s #1 vs #2)…with that said, don’t be surprised if Lovie drafts the DE out of USC.
YOU PEOPLE ARE FORGETTING THE BIGGEST RULE TO ALL THIS ARGUING
the bucs do nothing that is logical and that makes us happy. everything is a recipe for pain and despair.
December 8th, 2014 at 11:19 pm
If Jameis is there you take him and don’t look back. If you pick first you take Jameis and don’t look back.
December 8th, 2014 at 11:24 pm
Winston 24 TD’s, 17 INT’s. Not exactly worthy of the #1 pick
December 8th, 2014 at 11:27 pm
aj…ding ding ding we have a winner!
Jingle bells jingle bells jingle all the way… to Tampa Mr. Winston. You snotty brat. You scrappy fighting warrior from FSU.
Bring Satan to Tampa at all costs.
December 8th, 2014 at 11:30 pm
Winston’s 2013 Freshman stat line 40 TD’s 10 Int’s.
December 8th, 2014 at 11:30 pm
Oh I forgot, Mike Glennon is the Buc’s QB of the future. Lovie said so
December 8th, 2014 at 11:36 pm
….and a National Championship.
Throwing the game winning TD to Mike Evans..oops I mean Kelvin Benjamin for the win against the mighty SEC Auburn Tigers.
….and undefeated..still!

December 8th, 2014 at 11:43 pm
Bryan to Joel : He’s an in state FSU Heisman Trophy winning QB Joel.
Joel to Bryan : You’re right bro, it’s going to take something BIG to bring these fans back into this stadium next season.
Bryan to Joel : Let’s tell Lovie his hands are tied right now when it comes to this kid.
Joel to Bryan : I’ll get him on the phone.
Joel and Bryan to Bucs-FSU fans all across the bay area and beyond : Have a Merry Jameis Christmas.
December 8th, 2014 at 11:44 pm
Game over.
December 8th, 2014 at 11:54 pm
FSU has been won dispite Winston. Just like a rookie nobody knew him and he was great. Now they know him and he is a turn over machine. The NFL Defense will have no problem with him.
December 8th, 2014 at 11:54 pm
Auburn sucks 87 had no business playing in that game. I’d take Jameis but no denying he has regressed this year.
December 9th, 2014 at 12:00 am
No brainer you take Winston at 1 then you take his OT turned center with our 2nd round pick. Dude is a roadgrader. He prolly had a whole 3 games at center in his career and already is better that Dietrich-smith
December 9th, 2014 at 12:13 am
Listen idiots ask yourselves who will get the most out of 6’5, 6’5, and 6’5?? Really it’s not even a decision
December 9th, 2014 at 12:21 am
DEAR GOD I’m terrified with the idea of Lovie being anywhere in the room when this first overall pick is made !!!!!
I really hope everyone understands the magnitude of selecting a QB at that spot – because if we’re wrong again, it will be another 5+ years of trying to get back on our feet. Think of where instead we would be as a franchise if Freeman was what we expected….
December 9th, 2014 at 12:29 am
It’s not so much a QB pick I’m worried about. It’s the development of said QB under Lovie’s clueless watch.
December 9th, 2014 at 12:29 am
Does any one remember what a ” bad guy” Warren Sapp was? He turned out alright! Not sure what the deal is with Winston’s decline ( besides losing half his team to the NFL) but he does have, as the song says” what ever it is” … A winner!
December 9th, 2014 at 12:35 am
So lets never draft a QB high in the draft because he could be a bust. Great with that logic we will never have a franchise QB!!!! Unbelievable !!!!!!!!
December 9th, 2014 at 12:53 am
Freeman was a #7 pick, I think, and his career QB rating
with Tampa was 79.
December 9th, 2014 at 12:55 am
Mark my word, If Bucs keep the #1 pick Lovie will pick the highest ranking OT or DE
December 9th, 2014 at 1:12 am
Freeman was #17
December 9th, 2014 at 1:41 am
mariota or winston or fire lovie glazers need to over rule him
December 9th, 2014 at 1:41 am
freeman had a losing record in college no clue why we picked that guy
December 9th, 2014 at 3:13 am
Todd – no doubt, and came out having trouble with accuracy, we saw a bit of that! But you gotta think his lack of growth had something to do with getting thrown into the fire/never having anyone to develop and coach him/constant changes of system.
Chipbuc – that’s the same mentality that puts teams in the gutter. “Franchise quarterback” isn’t a ‘hello my name is_____’ sticker you’re given at Radio City… and if it is, ur team most likely is in a spiral
December 9th, 2014 at 3:41 am
Jan 1st will settle the dispute between Winston and Mariota. This is the biggest game of the year on the biggest stage with 1a and 1b going toe to toe. The player who shines the best in this game very well be the QB of Tampa’s future!
December 9th, 2014 at 3:49 am
hey lets calm down we still need to lose 3 more games and we really need the titans to win one game also
December 9th, 2014 at 5:19 am
Any QB, dont care how elite he is, will not be good behind this O line…Im ok with Winston or Mariota, but trading back and grabbing an elite LT or Guard would be my first decision if it were up to me. Ive been saying it for the past 3 years, draft some O line with our high picks….and look where we suffer the most.
McCoy, LD, Banks, Evans have worked out pretty well as high picks…now its time for O line and QB high picks. We could grab somebody’s 3rd 4th or 5th pick in the draft with our 1st, plus maybe their 2nd and 3rd. We could work wonders with trading and end up with two 1st round picks and still pick in the top 5.
December 9th, 2014 at 7:22 am
Qb mariota first then build around him getting a qb is the hardest to solve in the nfl
December 9th, 2014 at 8:25 am
We don’t need a poll now….someone else has done one…..Buc Fans want Mariota over Winston….
80-20
December 9th, 2014 at 8:38 am
Chipbuc I agree with you completely. So tired of dumb fans talking about QB busts in the past. For the love of god people, you have to take a shot at one of these guys. For all the R Leafs and J Russell there are also Mannings, rothlisbergers, Rivers, and others. DEs and o-linemen can also be busts. Maybe we should just not draft anyone because they may not pan out.
And mikebuc you are so right about Mariota. He is not a pro style QB and does anyone think Lovie Smith will utilize an offensive style that will maximize his skill set? The only way Mariota will pan out in the NFL is if Chip Kelly is able to trade up for him. If he comes to Tampa he will be a bust.

To paraphrase Bill Polian, “if you listen to the fans, you’ll soon be sitting with them.” Draft Winston and don’t look back.
December 9th, 2014 at 9:46 am
I could see Winston going all Bo Jackson if we pick him and deciding to just play Baseball instead of being ruined in Tampa on a team that is sinking faster than the Titanic. At least Mariota to my knowledge doesn’t also excel in Baseball. I also think if we could get an OC with enough sense to tailor an offense that utilizes Mariota properly, that he can have success in the NFL. It is not unheard of anyways. We would also have to retool the offensive line and somehow find a way to run the ball as well as pass rush. Ok, enough stating the obvious. So, as far as Winston goes, I would like to see him stay in school so we do not have to deal with all of the fans that will be anti Mariota in the event that we pick Mariota.
December 9th, 2014 at 10:13 am
No read option QBs please.
December 9th, 2014 at 10:56 am
I would say this. If we take a QB 1st overall I would rather have Mariota. Now, if we take a QB at #1 I hate to say it, but we need to have a OC/QB coach/HC that are going to be here for awhile. All the good QBs have the same HC for their careers. Manning is different not the norm. That has been our main problem is finding a HC to stick around. 2 yrs and they are gone. No QB can thrive in that situation.
December 9th, 2014 at 10:58 am
Rayjay,
You would have to deal with all the anti-Winston fans if you draft him. It isn’t a win/win situation when it comes to drafting them, but I think people will be happy to at least of drafted a QB. All the obvious you stated for Mariota would have to be done for Winston as well. We have no O-line and we have no running game.
December 9th, 2014 at 11:00 am
Draft Mariota in the 1st. Draft C/OT in 2nd. BPA from there on out.
December 9th, 2014 at 11:03 am
Could also see Lovie going this way also:
1. Leonard Williams, DT, 6-4, 290, 4.88, Jr, Southern Cal: Don’t blame Williams for Southern Cal’s 38-20 loss to UCLA. A questionable personal foul penalty aside, Williams was again the most dominant player on the field, fighting off double teams to record four tackles and a fumble recovery. Strong, athletic and passionate, the Trojans’ star is earning comparisons to everyone from Houston Texans’ defensive end J.J. Watt to Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Gerald McCoy for his ability to dominate the line of scrimmage while alternating between defensive tackle and defensive end. He’s too quick for guards and too strong for tackles, wreaking havoc along the line of scrimmage against the run and pass.
December 9th, 2014 at 1:50 pm
I’m a huge FSU fan, I like Winston alot. Wouldn’t trade him for any qb in the nation. With that said, looking at our team and hearing these self righteous, I’m perfect, never made a mmistake, do gooders on this site complain everytime Joe does this segment, I’d rather have Mariota for his escape ability. But we’d have to adjust our offense for him.
December 9th, 2014 at 2:51 pm
You have to adjust this do nothing offense for any QB. Our play calling is horrendous.
Also, the only people calling for Winston are FSU fans. Other people don’t want him, but that makes all of us awful people.
December 9th, 2014 at 3:01 pm
I’m an FSU fan, but, even if I weren’t I don’t want a read option QB.
Please list how many read option QBs have adjusted to the NFL and been successful, and how many have had some success only to regress after defenses have adjusted?
I will take a prostyle QB, 8 days a week.
It doesn’t matter who wants Winston on here, it only matters what front offices want. They see who wins the vast majority of championships.
December 9th, 2014 at 7:35 pm
@micronole just remember you are a fan too. If Mariota is not available, then you look at Winston. Mariota is more accurate and is a dual threat. He also has no off the field issues.
December 10th, 2014 at 9:13 am
I am not an FSU fan and I want Winston. Mariota is a system QB and that is a big deal. Watch him closely when they play FSU. That offense is nothing like what he would need to do in the pros. He basically has two options on every play. Pass to your only target if he is open and if not run! There is no semblance of a pro style offense and no checking down receivers or recognizing defensive formations and calling audibles. Do any of you really think that the most conservative HC in the NFL is going to hire an offensive guru to come in here and run a gimmick offense?
