“Eventually It Happens”

Lovie Smith talks about building a winning culture with the Bucs.

Lovie Smith talks about building a winning culture with the Bucs.

Not that long ago, winning wasn’t expected at One Buc Palace. It was demanded.

Division titles were expected. The team had loftier goals than merely getting to .500.

Oh, how things have changed.

The Bucs, with but one winning season since Chucky was jettisoned after the 2008 campaign, have become a standard of losing, not just losing games, but coaches. They’re on their fourth coach in seven years.

So it was a bit uncomfortable to hear Lovie Smith, with only three games left in the season, discuss building a winning mentality at One Buc Palace.

“We haven’t won in a long time,” Lovie said. “[We’ve got] these next three, but we’ve been trying to do it all year. I keep telling the guys eventually we’re going to get over the hump if we keep developing young players like I’ve talked about and find a way to win some of the close games at the end and keep working on the field.

“Eventually it happens, but yes we do need to change the culture. I talked about us being relevant a long time ago. We’re not yet, but eventually we will be though.”

But wow does a coach build a winning culture largely with guys who know nothing but losing in the NFL? Lavonte David, Doug Martin, Mike Evans have never been winners in the NFL. Gerald McCoy was, and recent additions to the roster from other playoff teams have been, such as Michael Johnson, Anthony Collins and Clinton McDonald.

Guess it goes back to the old Al Davis saying, “Just win baby.”

Sadly, in a race for the top spot in the NFL Draft, the final days of December may not be the most timely to cultivate a winning attitude.

so, basically he’s saying even a blind squirrel can find a nut eventually.

nice to hear lovie. I’ll pay to watch when that eventually happens.

now we know why he needed 5 years. flip/flop, flip/flop…..

and yall wonder why Tedford checked out….as has most of the team.

THIS IS YOUR LEADER. EMBRACE THE HORROR.

  2. Buccfan37 Says:

Lovie Magoo keep bumping into things that go clink clank and clunk.

  3. mikeh Says:

ya eventually what this pinhead want another 5 years onto his contract. he should be on hot seat once next season starts. another year like this and see ya !

  4. Robert 9 Says:

I wonder if his final words in the interview were

I’m the man for the job, eventually we’ll win.

He’s lower than whale poop in my book.

  5. DallasBuc Says:

    That man is an idiot.

  6. INDYbucsfan Says:

This was when I stopped listening to him talk. Dropped my phone and started thinking about more important things.

  7. FowlBall Says:

    Incredible sense of urgency, Lovie!

To quote the famous economist, Maynard Keynes: “In the long run we’re all dead!”

  8. mikeh Says:

bucfan37- lmfao and the glazers actually listen to this moron. what the f..k are they thinking I wonder wow!!!!!

  9. Robert 9 Says:

and in that lies the problem dallas…..

no intelligent person is going to partner up with an idiot when their career is on the line.

we’re skrewed!!! Skrewed I tell ya!

if he’s still here next year we may as well trade back in the draft and go get josh freeman. I am serious here. they would probably click and then we could get some O lineman.

  10. Mr. Patrick Says:

As much as I like and respect Lovie as a person, I just don’t see him as the coach to bring the Bucs back to prominence.

  11. mikeh Says:

this is why the bears fired him after a 10-6 season cuz he is a moron.

  12. Greg Schiano Says:

    Joe,

Need you to release the email address to Team Glazer! When I was the HC all I heard was I was to anal!……everybody made fun “toe the line”….
    with other coaching staff’s!

THE PROBLEM IS NOT THE PLAYERS!!! THE PROBLEM IS THE COACHES!!

Yes, the #1 pick would be golden!! But I don’t care…Lovie has absolutely

ZERO URGENCY. Did anyone watch the Cardinals last night! Now that

team is fired up! We have Glennon and cannot win yet they are winning with 6th round draft picks at QB who have never played!!

The coaching staff does not motivate the players to scratch and claw….Bruce Ariens has more coaching talent in the pimple on his big ole white butt than Lovie and his entire staff combined!

    HARBAUGH..HARBAUGH..(FIRE THE BIG POODLE).HARBAUGH..HARBAUGH

How many games has this head coach given away with a lack of preparation and game management…sorry to remind fans…but 12 men on the field….time out on first play in second half….failure to run the ball in the second half….

Dan Marino could be reincarnated in the 2015 draft and Lovie could have the #1 pick…and even with Marino HE WOULD NOT WIN GAMES!

Lovie would NEVER be a Gruden Grinder!!!!

    Greg Schiano

  13. Robert 9 Says:

don’t forget the timeouts not called at the end of the game when the defense was gassed….where we lost the game.

and he said he does not believe in fatigue

  14. Greg Schiano Says:

    Joe,

If Team Glazer can’t get Harbaugh, what about Tony Sparano?? He has done a great job with the Raiders!! Again…winning games! You don’t here the Raiders talk about needing buy-create-fabricate a winning culture!

Fire Lovie Now. If Team Glazer Fires Lovie Now, they can find a coach before Black Monday!!

  15. Greg Schiano Says:

What about not replacing Tedford?? I cannot freakin understand why the Buc’s go an entire NFL season without an OC??? Someone please tell me why? Becuz Lovie is an Offensive genius….or becuz he is just offensive??

  16. Robert 9 Says:

because the glazers went all in on lovie and bought it hook line and sinker.

i’m sure he casually told them all will be fine …he’ll win 8 games with defense.

when in reality he just doesn’t give a damn. this is retirement money and him building his sons resume. the dude has already checked out!

  17. theodore Says:

“Not that long ago…” – Really, Joe? Those days are in fact long ago.

Reminds me of the Raiders talking about their past Super Bowls as if it applies to their current team.

  18. CC Says:

As Lovie the genius is trying to develop young talent to try and win a game someday, he is un-developing the fan base. What a effiin ass clown.

  19. mikeh Says:

he sure did pull one over on team glazer though! friggin snake! got his retirement money as Robert 9 said and I agree. he should take his kid and go back to his basement now. he is getting paid to do nothing anyway.

  20. Samspider Says:

Hahahaha. Joe this coach is a joke. Lovie doesnt know what he’s doing. He doesnt have Urlacher anymore to help him out. HAHAHAHAHAH. What a joke.

  21. gatrbuc17 Says:

    Repeat after me guys…………….BRANDON SCHERFF!

  22. Biff Barker Says:

The problem with keeping Lovie is that still blames the players for “not playing well”. It’s mainly the guys he brought in too.

By the end of the 2015 season, he will have churned 75% of the roster with his guys!

  23. Robert 9 Says:

and we will be left with a young team with no drive.

raheem 2.0, but at least raheem had some fire too him.

    we’re skrewed.

  24. DallasBuc Says:

mikeh- “he sure did pull one over on team glazer though! friggin snake!”
He had 99% of you fans and the easy local media buying his sht right up until he started losing regular season football games and embarrassed all of us on national TV against a terrible Atlanta team. Most of you didn’t want to look at the obvious failures and poor decision making that was taking place. All you needed to hear was Lovie Smith and you were good.

  25. ddneast Says:

Robert 9, please shut up. Same old hate Lovie spews out of your mouth every time someone yanks the cord. I understand where all the hate and loathing comes from, I really do.
I’m no particular fan of Lovie’s philoshy but I know in the NFL it can work. You have to look no further than Seattle and Arizona to see that. Hell, it even worked here.
Manning’s, Luck’s, Brady’s and Brees don’t come along every year.
Please note all of the teams that have failed recently trying to acquire the Unicorn, us being one of them.

  26. IdahoBucsfan Says:

Joe,.. PLEASE quit quoting lovie smith, it just makes my blood boil every time I hear his stupidity spilling out!

  27. Robert 9 Says:

ddneast is exhibit a on why lovie still has support in the community.

there’s a couple motivating factors that play into that, one of which is not PC to say, the other would be someone who is happy settling for excuses or better said “hope and change”, and thirdly would be their just plain simple.

could be all three. yeah, maybe I’m an ass, but the guy cost me a sport I used to love to watch. that and there’s not much positive to say to be honest.

guess I should move along, but if I and all the others who are sick of lovie we might well not come back period. what would that do for the future of the team, or this site for that matter. for now you’ll just have to endure until I get a job or something. peace.

  28. Tye Says:

After all the times Lovie has come to the podium and spouted delusional sewage and you choose to believe him after that, then you are likely deceived, polluted by listening to him!

So many poor decisions inn 1 season must be realized and hold him accountable..

  29. OB Says:

We have not won a playoff game since the Super Bowl. Chucky was jettisoned for this I believe. Then we went to losing seasons and not even getting a chance to win a playoff game.

I don’t know if the coaching is turning the players off their game or they are just over the hill or never on it.

  30. Connor Says:

Funny how we fired Chucky because 9-7 wasn’t good enough and now 9-7 is a pipe dream with us. I was a proud Bucs fan when Chucky was running the show. Since then it’s been embarrassing.

  31. Dave Pear Says:

    I think Lovie was misquoted.
    He really said…”Eventually sh!t happens”.

  32. Mike10 Says:

The team has missed winning just about as much as they’re missed having any “fire”. Lovie may be the guy to guide winning vets who already have a developed culture, accented with your FA’s that are buying in. I’m not sure if he can build this from the ground (aka basement) up.

No one on this team infuses any kind of leadership or fire, and Lovie is exactly the same.

  33. mikeh Says:

@DALLASBUC- SORRY PAL LOOK BACK WHEN THIS IDIOT WAS HIRED . I NEVER LIKED THE HIRE ! NEVER WAS A FAN OF THIS MORON!

  34. mikeh Says:

NOT A BANDWAGON JUMPER. BEEN FOLLOWING THIS STINKING TEAM SINCE 1981 IM 50 YEARS OLD! AND U DALLAS BUC?

  35. mikeh Says:

ya whatever DALLAS BUC U KNOW IT ALL. LIKE U I LIVE IN A CITY WHERE THE TEAM ACCTUALLY WINS. NEW ENGLAND BUT HAVE FAMILY DOWN THERE SEEN GAMES IN THE SOMBRARO. SO IM NOT ONE OF THESE HALF ASSED FANS I CARE AND NEVER LIKED THIS COACH! PERIOD. I DONT KNOW WHY ANYBODY WOULD BUT US DIE HARD FANS DO. OH WELL!

  36. mikeh Says:

meaning like the team not the coach! we have issues I think cuz I hate when the bucs suck! lol.

  37. PhillyBuc Says:

He uses hopefully a lot. Hope is not a strategy

    ————-

If you were TOO anal you wouldn’t have had a 3rd grade grammatical mistake in your first sentence. STFU! Your boy, Schiano, was blown out in 3 of the past 4 games of his most successful season and then the following uncompetitive season, laid the foundation for this horrid season with his idiotic personnel moves (Bennett, Chris Jones, George Selvie, and Wallace Gilberry have all seen far greater success AFTER Schiano deemed them unworthy of being Buccaneer Men.

Schiano will go down as one of the worst coaches in Buccaneer history… worse than Raheem (who didn’t get the benefit of the free agency cash Schiano did) and worse than Leeman Bennett and Ray Perkins (who didn’t have the benefit of having any talent on their teams).

    ————————

Hope is the strategy that won the presidency. And in Obama’s defense, we haven’t lost that hope, because we’re all still hoping he figures out what he’s doing. Comparing Obama to Lovie is very lazy and stupid, however. It is more realistic to compare a junior senator making the jump to the presidency to a mediocre college coach making the jump to NFL head coach… like Schiano.
