Mike Evans Was Guilty

FOX’s referee guru weighs in

Part of the nut-kick that was the Bucs’ loss today at the Factory of Sadness, which dropped Tampa Bay to 1-7, was a first-down catch late in the game by Mike Evans. It was waved off as Evans was called for offensive pass interference — pushing off.

In the video below, Twittered out by NFL rules guru Mike Pereira of Fox Sports, the former head of NFL officiating breaks down the film and explains in great detail why it was a penalty on Evans.

Some Bucs fans didn’t think Evans should have been flagged because he wasn’t five yards downfield. Pereira details why that doesn’t apply.

O well Mike Evans was ballin today… Hello it’s about draft position we need our #1 pick just sayin

  2. Warren Says:

Good stuff…I was pissed! Guess we lost fair and square and only have ourselves to blame

  3. Albuc44 Says:

    Lets talk about not running on 2nd &1,3rd &1,4th &1 — hmmm …not even 1 qb sneak? Really … 1 yard —- Rainey had a good day running — really 1 yard
    :-/

  4. Bucmaniac Says:

How anal is that?! Come on! Your allowed a 1 yard push off but push off at the 2 and it’s a 10 yard penalty… On the bright side we are closer at getting Jameis!

  5. Soggy Says:

Nice post joe.. did not know about the 2 yard thing..

  6. Trubucfan22 Says:

I was shocked the Bucs didn’t challenge his catch in the fourth. I watched it in slow motion with my dvr and he did get both feet down. Bad call by the refs and the Bucs staff not to look at it in a crucial point in the game.

Also the no call on Vincent Jackson, the one everyone thought he dropped it, he was actually pass interfered by Haden. Haden gave him a hook under his right shoulder before the ball got there.

  7. bucrightoff Says:

Yeah the playcalling was awful in the last third of the game. Rainey needed 5-10 more carries and should have gotten it twice in a row on 2nd and (if necessary) 3rd and 1.

  8. Buccfan37 Says:

It looked to me that Evans had slight push offs on a few of his catches. The refs missed some calls against the Brown’s also.

  9. Espo Says:

It was blatant. I guess us Bucs fans need it explained to us slowly with small words and pictures.

I wouldn’t mind revisiting their go ahead touchdown pass. I’m pretty sure that amazing block on LVD was square in the back. Explain that one, Pereira. Please, speak slowly.

    🙂

  11. Espo Says:

It’s funny how people are saying we should’ve run more. Before we ran too much. To predictable. Too bland.

None of it is working! It’s not the play calling, it’s the execution!

  12. Phillip Says:

    @Espo

    Lol

    @Joe

Did Vjax have any drops today? I was working and caught the 2nd quarter on but was watching red zone more than the game… The “drop” he had in the 3rd or 4th quarter his arm was being held not sure how that could be a drop

  13. Ana Says:

If you are a bad team, this is what happens! My daughters play volleyball and a smart coach ( Butch May, Mitsy May’s dad) once told told my oldest girl’s team, “if you have to ref your own games, you are not playing well enough to win!”

  14. Trubucfan22 Says:

You are exactly right espo. We do not want Glennon throwing more. The people begged for it, and this is what we get. A qb that can not throw or scramble for a measly yard!

  15. Stanglassman Says:

A bad call, this type of contact is never called on a WR. What their excuse the play before? It was clearly PI on Vjax and but no call.

  16. SOEbuc Says:

Who the hell is in charge of throwing the challenge flags???!!!! Mike evans caught that downfield pass and got both feet in in the 4th

The Bucs are not going to get any breaks with the refs, they never have and never will. Bucs are kind of like the Raiders of the NFC, the team the refs love to flag, even when Chuckie was coaching the team to division titles, the refs loved to flag the Bucs, that definitely is not going to change anytime soon. If I were a conspiracy theorist, I’d say a Vegas Inquiry is in order but when your team is 1-7 and undisciplined, do not expect any help from the refs…..

  18. tweezydakidd Says:

Bolony Joe!!! I’m sick of the ref deciding the freaking game! That call by the refs is never called, and I always see it in other games!! Screw the refs!! They do this every freaking week!

  19. Ray Rice Says:

Hey JOE why don’t you talk about your MANY BEEF ASJ giving up on his route on 4th down? Your boy let up. Not to mention he let that little a$$ safety slow him up. What a pu$$y. Beast my a$$. A beast would have ran right through him.

  20. Joe Says:

    Rice:

Hey JOE why don’t you talk about your MANY BEEF ASJ giving up on his route on 4th down?

Heard Brennaman say that but it sure didn’t look like it to Joe. Brennaman was wrong all game long, so much so Mike Pereira had to put out a video correcting him (see above).

  21. Ray Rice Says:

Hey JOE FUK what Brennaman says. I am calling what I saw. Not saying it was ASJ’s fault we lost but he ain’t no FUKING beast. Dude should have ran through that safety. He let up on his route immediately when the safety got on him in coverage.

  22. Joe Says:

We saw two different things, sorry. Can’t agree.

Sorry you were influenced by a guy who is more often wrong than right.

  23. Ray Rice Says:

The only thing that influenced me was what I saw. Sorry you have to ride ASJ’s jock so much!

Absolutely true! Worse yet, they called timeout on the ensuing play to prevent a delay of game penalty???? If you’re going to spend a timeout anyway, why NOT throw the challenge flag, because even if you lose the challenge, you have only lost the timeout they subsequently called anyway. Dumbest thing ever, and all too typical.

  25. Mike J Says:

Er, when has Pereira ever come out & said a call against the Bucs (or a non-call for them) was the correct thing?? Just askin’…..

Not keeping score but if you can prove him wrong with a rulebook and video, have at it.

  27. Mike J Says:

Hey, Joe: I didn’t argue the call; just asked a simple question.

  28. Kevin Says:

What about the play that was ruled incomplete when Mike Evans ACTUALLY CAUGHT a pass for a first down clearly in bounds. No challenge and a wasted timeout. Or maybe they couldn’t challenge it and the ref’s just decided it wasn’t worth looking at. This league is FU$*#ED!!! Contradicting officiating from game to game. Tired of seeing teams winning and losing by bad calls. Don’t get me wrong the Bucs have sucked and deserve to be in the bottom of the south. But Officiating get’s worse the more rules they add. I am beginning to not enjoy watching games anymore.
