Jameis Watch: The WWE Heel
November 21st, 2014Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, national champion James Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon and Josh McCown.
It’s Joe’s regular nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback to wear No. 5 ever in the state of Florida.
The list of dumb things Jameis Winston has done in his 2 1/2 years at Florida State (remember, he redshirted his freshman year) are almost as famous as his fantastic exploits on the field. Maybe, more so.
Winston is hardly the first college player to be scandalous. He won’t be the last. But the vitriol people have for him is really something. Joe isn’t sure why.
Then it hit Joe: Veteran Tampa Bay sports columnist Gary Shelton referred to him as a “heel.” Later, TheBigLead.com typed how Winston plays the part of wrestling heel perfectly.
That’s it! Winston had done stupid things, no question. But he carries himself, rather than the humble human who is deeply sorry for his misdeeds, instead like the confident champion and Heisman Trophy winner he is.
And it drives folks bananas.
Just think, with Winston, you not only get an unreal quarterback but wrestling vaudeville. In the video below, Winston makes like wrestling manager Jimmy Hart as he exits the field at Joe Robbie Stadium, after yet another come-from-behind win, this time against Miami.
As Winston leaves the turf amid a chorus of boos and profanities, Winston has a simple gesture for what the Miami fans should do, just like Ric Flair leaving the ring after quickly dispatching of Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka.”

“Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon and Josh McCown.”….
actually …on field judgement….virtually all of his body of work has been against talent college teams overall mismatched…Jameis will be suckered and humbled in the NFL…but wait..he has proven he can learn from his mistakes….oh…waiting…….
November 21st, 2014 at 7:22 pm
Poll please, Joe….sometime in my lifetime….
November 21st, 2014 at 7:39 pm
Lovie Smith will not draft Winston, even if he is available. Even if the Raiders don’t draft him, they will ensure everyone thinks they will to try to sucker someone for that blockbuster trade.
November 21st, 2014 at 7:47 pm
Winston is the only reason the Noles are ranked in the top 25. You wouldn’t want a proven winner behind center on the Bucs? He never falters on the field in any situation. Mariota will be a bust after a career ending injury first year. No more dump pass crap that we are accustomed to around here please.
November 21st, 2014 at 7:48 pm
lol i think lovie gonna get a woody if winston is on the board. No way bucs pass on him… florida already loves him
November 21st, 2014 at 8:10 pm
winston is an nfl bust. but putting the miami crowd in their place is priceless.
November 21st, 2014 at 8:11 pm
What is so freaking hard about coming up with a Poll like TBBF is asking for. You need some help with logistics????
November 21st, 2014 at 8:16 pm
Joe, why are you not trying to promote a trade in the off season for Johnny Manziel? Afterall, he is YOUR guy, isn’t he?
I would rather have him then Winston.
BTW, how many Heisman Trophy Winners have won a superbowl in the last 40 years?
ZERO.
Interesting stat.
November 21st, 2014 at 8:20 pm
Florida State University has produced these legendary NFL Quarterbacks: Peter Tom Willis, Brad Johnson, Casey Weldon, Danny Kanell, Chris Weinke, Adrian McPherson, Christian Ponder and EJ Manuel.
Only one worth mentioning is Brad, and he wasn’t exactly great. He just has a history here.
November 21st, 2014 at 8:28 pm
It is undeniable that Jameis Winston is a great college QB. That being said, so was Ryan Leaf, Jamarcus Russell, RGIII, Vince Young, Tim Tebow (I still think he could make a good NFL QB, but I digress), Matt Leinart, Christian Ponder, E J Manuel, Chris Weinke, Casey Weldon…..I think you get my point.
Just because you look great in college does not always mean success in the NFL.
Do I think Jameis Winston would create a level of excitement for the Tampa Bay fans? No question…until he started throwing interceptions or making boneheaded plays and then everyone would be saying…Well we could have had this guy or that guy.
But I like playing the “What if” game.
Go Bucs! Win one for Lovie!
November 21st, 2014 at 8:29 pm
@ Buc Bonzai
Keep preaching man. Even though only the rational are hearing you.
November 21st, 2014 at 8:31 pm
Dave Pear
You are using Entirely too much logic here.
Flagged.
November 21st, 2014 at 8:46 pm
Gatrbuc17,
I just think it is an exercise in futility to play the “Who are we gonna take next year in the draft game”. We don’t even know at this point where we will be picking and if Jameis will be declaring himself eligible.
Could be a premature evaluation!
November 21st, 2014 at 9:16 pm
Personally, I think our best route will be free agency or trade. The QBs coming out in 2015 are not that great.
November 21st, 2014 at 9:17 pm
It would take about 3 losses for Tampa fans to turn on Winston.
November 21st, 2014 at 9:22 pm
BuccaneerBonzai-
I’m already on record saying we should trade Doug Martin and Mike Glennon to Cleveland straight up for Johnny Manziel.
Reunite Manziel and Evans. I think it could work.
November 21st, 2014 at 9:25 pm
If they didn’t take Manzeil I don’t see how they take anyone who stole crab legs from Publix. That is just moronic.
November 21st, 2014 at 9:26 pm
How ironic would it be if the Bucs win out the rest of the season, win the division, make the playoffs as a result, and go to the SB?
After so many of us have given up on the season?
November 21st, 2014 at 9:29 pm
That would be SWEET. I love Cinderella stories!!
November 21st, 2014 at 9:31 pm
@Dave Pear
They could trade ANY one of our RBs for Johnny. All of them are more proven.
No need to put Glennon in the package at all. Heck, Martin is a first round pick, although I’m against trading him.
I think with a good Oline, Martin could be one of the best in the league. Notice his production dropped when the oline got blown up?
Really though, there is no need for a trade at all. There are vets that will become available in 2015. Guys on teams that have starters already. I’m all for getting a young QB, but given next years draft class, I don’t think this is a good year.
Although, aside from the knee injury history, I would go Marcus over any other at this point.
November 21st, 2014 at 9:32 pm
comeback victories in the nfl don’t come so easy as college. falling behind early against inferior talent is a huge nfl red flag. pass!
November 21st, 2014 at 9:44 pm
brett …you act as if falling behind early has nothing to do with the FSU defense.
Huge red flag that you’re clueless.
As for the rest of you…The Glazer geeks want to sell tickets. Jameis is the answer. Period.
November 21st, 2014 at 9:57 pm
BuccaneerBonzai,
I’m just saying…Martin and Glennon are sitting on the bench already it’s not like they will be missed.
November 21st, 2014 at 10:26 pm
Martin is starting this week, Dave.
November 21st, 2014 at 10:27 pm
Come on Braden River High…win this game. #my boys team
November 21st, 2014 at 10:30 pm
Bonzai,
Charles Woodson is a Super Bowl champion & Heisman trophy winner.
November 21st, 2014 at 10:37 pm
Using a school’s past record at a position is moronic.
That’s like saying no good WRs ever came out of Georgia Tech. Better not draft Calvin Johnson.
Moron.
November 21st, 2014 at 10:41 pm
Was wondering what he’ll do for an encore when he finally loses a game…same MO? Or pull a Josh Mccown on us? LOL!
November 21st, 2014 at 10:46 pm
@SteveK
I meant at QB. I should have said that.
November 21st, 2014 at 11:10 pm
How many picks has Winston thrown the past 4 weeks against unranked teams which he barely went on to beat….yeah lets pick him up, he’s gonna be awsome. I must have missed the news that the rest of the NFL was being replaced by the wack ass ACC.
November 21st, 2014 at 11:24 pm
Bonzai,
I won a heisman and a super bowl too, but don’t let facts get in the way of a good rant
November 21st, 2014 at 11:27 pm
@Joe: I’ll be he first to admit that I’m no better than some average fellow at the bar when it comes to assessing/evaluating/predicting college QB’s pro potential. It doesn’t really matter to me WHO the Bucs draft to be their franchise QB, as long as he’s successful and leads us to wins.
That said, if it IS Jameis Winston that our Tampa Bay Buccaneers select with the #3 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, please please PLEASE follow through and give him the MMQB treatment and lead EVERY SINGLE post about him with your intro:
Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, national champion, first round draft pick Jameis Winston, the pride of your Tampa Bay Buccaneers!
November 21st, 2014 at 11:50 pm
BTW, looking at a school’s “history” of producing NFL QB’s is a somewhat dubious endeavor.
FSU hasn’t produced any “great” QB’s (Brad Johnson notwithstanding… Charlie Ward had a decent career. In the NBA.)
Notre Dame hasn’t produced any “great” modern QB’s… other than Joe Montana.
Pitt hasn’t produced any “great” modern QB’s… other than Dan Marino.
Tennessee hasn’t produced any “great” modern QB’s… other than Peyton Manning.
Cal hasn’t produced any “great” modern QB’s… other than Aaron Rodgers.
Michigan hasn’t produced any “great” modern QB’s… other than Tom Brady.
Stanford hasn’t produced any “great” modern QB’s… other than John Elway and possibly Andrew Luck.
Great QBs are rare, and their college pedigree have little to do with their NFL success.
November 22nd, 2014 at 12:07 am
Jamieus Winston is a complete disaster. No freakin’ way Jason Licht risks his job/reputation on that clown. I would bet the farm that the kid doesn’t go in the top 15. No GM should or would want to take that risk. Seriously kids, stop the ridiculous Winston crap, you sound like idiots.
November 22nd, 2014 at 1:01 am
Sigh.
Forgive them Lord for they know not what the hell they are talking about.
November 22nd, 2014 at 2:08 am
Tampabaybucfan, get your on site and put up your damn poll!
November 22nd, 2014 at 7:12 am
Lovie will never draft this guy.

Just because you look great in college does not always mean success in the NFL.
——————-
JaMarcus Russell was a far from great college QB. He started one lone season, and was almost beat out for the job, and then got on a decent roll with a very talented team behind him. He was still not much more than a caretaker in college. It’s no surprise that after his questionable college work ethic, his lack of actual experience starting games, and the fact that he was never asked to win games, spoke volumes about what a bad QB in the NFL he would become. (he showed up to the NFL Combine, biggest job interview of his life, looking like a fat OG at 265 lbs.)
Christian Ponder and EJ Manuel were never close to being great college QBs either. They were pretty good, but both were a bit of surprise 1st round selections given their uneven collegiate performances. Casey Weldon? He was the beneficiary of a great team around him, I don’t think he was even drafted in the first 3 rounds. Then you said you though Tebow could play which I could have pretty much not said anything and nothing else could possibly make you look worse in evaluating QBs.
Big Ben looked great in college, so did Colin Kaepernick, so did Blake Bortles, and despite the fact that they dominated against non-power conferences, they were able to translate their game to the pros (Bortles the jury is still out). My point being, Winston can play, anybody denying that is either lying or blind. His questions arise about his character, attack his character all you want, you might be right by calling him a turd, but the dude can flat out play. That much should never be questioned.
November 22nd, 2014 at 8:05 am
When you look at QBs in the NFL who play like Winston, what do you see? Injuries and mostly failure.
Give me a pocket passer that know how to move in the pocket and has just a little scramble ability. Skill in the passing game is what ALWAYS matters most. Mobility is needed, but it can’t cover up for absence of skill.
Really, Josh McCown has the style we would want, he just isn’t skilled enough.
A guy like Mark Sanchez would have done well behind our old oline. Him being stuck with the Jets was a curse. He’ll be available next year.
I would rather have Josh as Quarterbacks coach then starting QB.
Believe it or not, I would rather have Glennon starting right now. Even if he is the worse option. At least he will lose for us, which is best for the future of this team.
November 22nd, 2014 at 8:17 am
Anybody watch that awesome Lyle Alzado show last night? He was a heel too.
I remember a segment Bobby Heenan had a spray bottle filled with “sweat.” He sprayed it on Andre the Giant, because he never got scared and wanted him to know what sweat felt like. I laughed my derriere off at that!
Heels make everything better, especially when they have the talent of guys like Alzado and Winston.
November 22nd, 2014 at 8:25 am
Let’s explore the winning scemario realistically. Say we start winning some game and manage to get into the playoffs with six wins (not going to happen, but the network are talking about our division sending a 5 win team to the playoffs).
What have we accomplished? Yay, we’re a 6 win team in the playoffs. We get one more loss to end our season. It really hurts our draft position. Instead of picking in the top 5, we pick around 20th. We are one and done in the playoffs becaise the team we play is actually good enough to be there.
Even if we do not draft a quarterback in round one…say we go with offensive line or pass rush instead and sign a qb or trade for one, the higher draft position is what’s best for the future of the team. It will put us in the ideal spot to draft a QB at the top of any round…before he is taken by another team.
Losing out would be tough on our players, but you know what would help them over it? Getting thru adversity and knowing we have the draft picks to secure a long term future of winning. Remaining stable at Head Coach.
Rod Marinelli WILL be a Buccaneer next year, regardless of the doubters. We WILL have a new offensive coordinator next year, and an improved offensive line.
All we’ll need is draft picks and good FA. We’ll have cap room. Goldson and koenin will be history, freeing a bunch up. Not to mention McCown if we find better.
Heck, we’ll have cap room carry over from McCown, because there is NO W he’ll me incentives this year.
November 22nd, 2014 at 8:27 am
“because there is NO WAW he’ll meet incentives this year.”
Tablet hacked up that last line.
November 22nd, 2014 at 8:29 am
Auto correct sucks. WAW isn’t even a word. “WAY” was what I typed. Sheesh!
November 22nd, 2014 at 8:35 am
Bonzai I have to assume you have never watched FSU play. You say give me a pocket passer that has a little scramble ability. Are you really that clueless about Winston? What you say you want is what Winston is!!! Also, for the people who point out all the QB busts, you can also miss on DEs (G Adams), OG (Robert Gallery), S (Barron) on and on! Winston looks like a can’t miss on the field and just because he could be a bust doesn’t mean we should never take a shot at a franchise QB. The Bucs have wasted 1st round picks numerous times in recent history, I want them to take a guy that could make potentially make them a contender for a decade.
November 22nd, 2014 at 8:39 am
No one has met the man, look at Randy moss, Warren sapp and other athletes with a mark, coming out of college.
November 22nd, 2014 at 8:43 am
My goal is for long term success for the Bucs. In the offseason trade Glennon for a 4th or 5th round pick and have McCown return to start out the season and help groom the rookie QB. Even if we sit the QB for the first year at least Buc fans will have some hope for the future!
November 22nd, 2014 at 8:54 am
For all the morality police. BIte Me! I have no allegiance to FSU. But I have been watching football for 40+ years.Winston will be a great NFL qb.
November 22nd, 2014 at 9:52 am
Unless we improve our line, Winston will become a running QB. Nope.
November 22nd, 2014 at 11:04 am
BucFanInArkansas… Flacco was a backup QB at Pittsburgh for two years before he left for Delaware.
November 22nd, 2014 at 1:00 pm
Bojim u can get a great offensive linemen in later rounds. You know where you typically find franchise QBs? With top 3 picks! They can use rounds 2-7 to draft linemen and hopefully pick up a few in free agency.
November 22nd, 2014 at 2:23 pm
Buccfan37… That’s true, so even IF you consider Flacco “great” (I don’t, but that’s just me), that raises Pitt from1 to 2 “great” QBs in the last 30+ years. I stand by my statement.
