Jameis Watch: A Bold Bucs Endorsement
November 22nd, 2014Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, national champion James Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon and Josh McCown.
It’s Joe’s regular nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback to wear No. 5 ever in the state of Florida.
Joe’s going to let a powerful quote to the talking here.
Rest assured, Winston will receive no more thorough endorsement than what he got yesterday from longtime Buccaneers radio voice Gene Deckerhoff, who joined AM-1000 in Chicago to talk Bucs yesterday. Deckerhoff also is the iconic voice of FSU football and basketball.
“Jameis Winston has never been charged with a crime. He has never been arrested. He has won 23 consecutive games, every game he has started. He is a leader in the clubhouse on the baseball team. He is a team leader in the locker room on the football team. Yes, he did win the Heisman trophy a year ago when he led his team, as a freshman, to a national championship. All the kid does is win.
“He’s been honored as much as any player in the history of college football, at least to this point in his career. And yet he is probably the most maligned and the most hated guy in a college uniform.
“I will say this: I’ve been around Jameis. I’ve been around his family. He goes to class. He’s a 3.0 or better grade point average. He rides a bicycle to class. He is the quintessential student athlete. I’m very proud that Jameis Winston is the quarterback of the Florida State Seminoles.
“I’ll promise you this. He will win a Super Bowl for whichever team that drafts him in the National Football League.”
As Deckerhoff might say, “Bye Golly!” That’s one heck of thumbs-up.
November 22nd, 2014 at 4:02 pm
Not going to get my hopes up but hey we can dream right??? I dont think Lovie and Jason pull the trigger
November 22nd, 2014 at 4:26 pm
Super Bowl? Who in the heck would want of those…
November 22nd, 2014 at 4:27 pm
Jameis is not a franchise QB yet, but I admit, he’s the best prospect since Luck. Luck was more of a sure thing.
It all’s tarred int the trenches. We need edge rushers and dancing bears on the o line.
November 22nd, 2014 at 4:30 pm
Homer
November 22nd, 2014 at 4:45 pm
Hmm…… Do you think thoose fine folks in Leon county maybe swept some stuff under the carpet????
November 22nd, 2014 at 4:46 pm
Deckerhoff is indeed a “homer” – one of the best – and that’s why I love hearing him call a game.
The man is more than qualified to identify a “winner” QB when he sees one – and I believe his endorsement of Winston’s character (despite the negative reports) probably carries more weight than most people’s.
If Jameis Winston is on the board when our 1st round selection comes next year – then we MUST take the chance on a franchise QB and draft him. We probably won’t get that chance and it makes no sense to overpay and move up on a risky choice to begin with – but if he’s available to draft whenever we pick – The Bucs should pull the trigger and go all in with Winston.
November 22nd, 2014 at 4:54 pm
At least Drunkenhoff pronounced his name correctly and didn’t call him Jameis Freeman
November 22nd, 2014 at 5:08 pm
@ ALL THE JOES…………………………………………………….CAN WE GET A POLL ON HOW BUCS FANS FEEL ABOUT WINSTON
This is only like the twentieth time you guys have been asked.
You love your “Lovie Confidence” Polls.
November 22nd, 2014 at 5:16 pm
I’d rather trade a 2 and 4 for johnny footie
November 22nd, 2014 at 5:17 pm
C’mon State..Get’em
November 22nd, 2014 at 5:18 pm
I’d rather have Johnny Football and that speaks Volumes because of how muchI didnt want him last yr and he couldnt beat out Brian Hoyer.
November 22nd, 2014 at 5:23 pm
@gatrbuc17
After I see him play in the playoffs, my evaluation will be complete. Gotta say though, the Kid’s one helluva competitor though.
He’s got all the intangible assets to be a successful QB , at the next level. Famous just needs a strong supporting cast around him, and he’ll be fine.
November 22nd, 2014 at 5:35 pm
Bring in Winston, Deckerhoff will surely have the big one.
November 22nd, 2014 at 5:35 pm
Big Gene will go insane if we draft Famous
November 22nd, 2014 at 5:41 pm
Speaking of Polls. Can we please start a poll.
How many fans feel Big Gene Deckerhoff should be the next Buccaneer Great to entry the Ring of Honor?
Let the man please enjoy the fruits of him labor, while he’s still kicking.
November 22nd, 2014 at 5:43 pm
I guess the home skillet Gene missed the NY Times investigative articles. No obstruction of justice there.
The TPD and FSU police and lastly Jimbo have been covering for Winston and other FSU athletes since forever.
Yes the kid can play football. Somewhere else please.
November 22nd, 2014 at 5:43 pm
We draft Famous…we gotta sign Rob Chudzinski as the next OC.
November 22nd, 2014 at 5:46 pm
Momma there go that man again (Ramsey)
November 22nd, 2014 at 5:46 pm
Joe, a bold endorsement? Time to take of those Bullwinkle pajamas, take a cold shower and sober up chief.
November 22nd, 2014 at 5:54 pm
He’s beaten 1 really good team in the NC game that had a pretty lousy defense. What great teams or defenses have they beaten. I just don’t get how everyone thinks he’s going to be great. You can see the potential, he was much better last year with better talent.
November 22nd, 2014 at 5:55 pm
OK…..now…..I have to double-dog dare Joe to run a poll…..
JBF readers deserve to know where fans stand on drafting Winston vs other options.
Poll now please!!!
November 22nd, 2014 at 6:05 pm
Patrick Bucs: how’s Auburn sound? Looks at those second half stats dude. Jameis went berserk. Also, he’s beaten more ranked teams this year than anyone else. I believe he’s beaten 4 ranked teams, and if he beats Ga Tech, that’d be 5. If he wins 2 playoff games…that’s 7 ranked teams in one season.
Come on bro. Pay attention
November 22nd, 2014 at 6:06 pm
Draft a quarterback bottom line!!!
November 22nd, 2014 at 6:07 pm
All you guys: it doesn’t matter if fans want Jameis or not.
What if 76% don’t want him?
He’s still the best draft option for us. Period. Lovie will be in danger of having the decision taken away from him if he says ‘no.’
November 22nd, 2014 at 6:11 pm
Turd Watch
November 22nd, 2014 at 6:13 pm
@ Mr Patrick
Joe does describe it a a nugget!!! Probably the kind is long, brown & lies in the grass….
November 22nd, 2014 at 6:15 pm
@kalind
I did pay attention that’s why I commented. Are any of those teams ranked this year besides Louisville currently? Notre Dame , Clemson, OKC average at the very best. Miami meh, 3-4 loss teams aren’t something to hang your hat.
Auburn defense was suspect at best last year, they needed turnovers to seem good. Last year they gave up against the best teams they faced: 35 to LSU, 41 to A & M, 38 to Georgia, 28 to Bama, 42 to Missouri, 34 to FSU.
Sure was a crazy statement I made.. Smh
November 22nd, 2014 at 6:27 pm
We need more picks in draft, not less. As long as we stockpile picks (and crab legs) get him. If not, there are other fish in the sea
November 22nd, 2014 at 6:28 pm
Patrick. That sounds like nothing but excuses. In your estimation, who has played good teams?!
ND was ranked 5! When we played them. Clemson was top 10. You’re saying the only way to be good, and have it count is for the team to STAY ranked after we beat them. Dude, that’s stoopid.
November 22nd, 2014 at 6:29 pm
Patrick…………..Stop talking sense. A lot of people around here get confused if you talk sense.
November 22nd, 2014 at 6:29 pm
Auburn was suspect? I heard half a million idiots telling people just how great they were. Team of destiny. FSU was going to come back to earth against a ‘real’ (SEC) Defense. Nobody beats FSU. No one beats Jameis.
I said it weeks ago. Deniers. Stop denying it.
You’re in denial.
November 22nd, 2014 at 6:31 pm
Gatrbuc. Any chance your a bit biased here too?
Any chance you think Dim Tebow is a good NFL QB? Sheesh.
Making sense. Laugher
November 22nd, 2014 at 6:52 pm
He is also paid well by FSU’S athletic department.
November 22nd, 2014 at 6:55 pm
@kalind
I said Auburn’s defense was suspect and I proved it, with stats. They did win on a sweet offense and tons of luck see Georgia and Auburn games. My argument was has Winston faced many good defenses? I say he has not. He has 6 more Tds then picks this year, he’s no sure fire prospect. This wasn’t a college hate thing but you really going to dog Tebow that won an NFL playoff game? How about Ponder & Manuel?
Umm yes if you are ranked number 5 and now you’re not ranked and got smacked by ASU and lost to lowly Northwestern you aren’t a number 5 ranked team and overrated. There are zero teams FSU has beaten this year (including Clemson with him) currently in the top 25. Most of the teams FSU has played this year has gotten this ass kicked multiple times.
We will see how he finishes this year against that brutal schedule:)
November 22nd, 2014 at 7:05 pm
@kalind
FSU is far from unbeatable, had 3-4 games that could if gone the other way but all that matters is scoreboard. No way this team wins 2 games in a row to be undefeated again IMO.
November 22nd, 2014 at 7:06 pm
I hope we don’t draft this kid, if he was that good he should shred this defense. I’m not buying the hype
November 22nd, 2014 at 7:07 pm
But. They don’t. Only stat that matters
November 22nd, 2014 at 7:20 pm
” said Auburn’s defense was suspect and I proved it, with stats. They did win on a sweet offense and tons of luck…”
this is still just your opinion.
ps what are these stats for luck you speak of?
November 22nd, 2014 at 7:20 pm
LOL @ Kalind
I have never mentioned Tebow here
Hate Much????
November 22nd, 2014 at 7:20 pm
It’s OK Kalind. You will grow up and understand football soon bud.
November 22nd, 2014 at 7:24 pm
@lurker
I provided game totals for Auburn’s defense. They were poor, but opportunistic. Good defenses don’t give up 30-40 points a game.
November 22nd, 2014 at 7:29 pm
Ah, so if you mention Winston is a bad human being your comment gets deleted. Nice.
No, whatever you type here is the responsibility of JoeBucsFan.com., not you. So therefore Joe cannot publish malicious lies. –Joe
November 22nd, 2014 at 7:35 pm
@gator
The original point was I do not think he’s all that great for the Bucs. I could care less about FSU, they missed a 40 yard fg and ran the ball but people will say that’s Winston. Ok:) if he was all that good these games wouldn’t come down to this.
November 22nd, 2014 at 7:37 pm
fsu wins!
all the kid does is win. does it matter how?
he has poor defense, poor receivers that drop passes, and a poor oline that gets him killed at times. that sounds like the bucs to me.
November 22nd, 2014 at 7:38 pm
so what qb do you like for the bucs, patrick?
November 22nd, 2014 at 7:39 pm
@ Patrick
I didnt know there was a misunderstanding.
I am SO against Winston and it is not because of him being from FSU
I couldn’t care Where he is from. I care that he is an Idiot and I dont want any more Idiots QBing for us
November 22nd, 2014 at 7:40 pm
I was telling you that you were talking Perfect Sense that can’t be understood here often
Compliment bro
November 22nd, 2014 at 7:59 pm
Either you love Winston or you don’t. You respect what FSU had done winning 26 in a row or you don’t. There’s nothing FSU can do to change you haters so it’s pointless to argue. Even if they win out and beat whoever is there from the SEC you’ll hate on them for something else just like when we beat Auburn. The best part though? Winston, FSU, and the fans don’t give a chit what you think. All that matters is you keep hating and we keep winning and that’s just the way it is. It really gives us joy that every week we disappoint you and win. You figured for two years you’d be over it by now but you’re not, again we love how mad we make you. Please don’t change, stay hating.
November 22nd, 2014 at 8:15 pm
Why is it that people are “hating” when the recognize an obvious basic character flaw that is undeniable?
Keep the Love
November 22nd, 2014 at 8:16 pm
@maskevelli
This has become do you want Winston as a Bucs QB or not. I think he’s good but he hasn’t been great at all this year. I want someone who is going to get us wins for the Bucs.
Congrats in FSU win, if they run the table it’s impossible to hate. Right now it’s not tough to question them. Remember they would have to beat 2 legit teams this year to win it all not Duke and then Auburn. They are not the same quality team as last year I don’t think anyone can question that.
November 22nd, 2014 at 8:27 pm
Who in the world is saying they’re the same team from last year? 13 players to the NFL from last year, HELLO! You’re right though, this is a do you want him on the Bucs or don’t you thread. I DO! As Gene says, NEVER been charged with a crime. Does he do some dumb shit? Sure he does, but I love how everyone criticizes him like you had it all figured out at 20yrs old too and didn’t make bad decisions. I don’t remember ever hearing anything about Marvin Harrison or Aaron Hernandez doing anything wrong in college but they were executing people in their spare time in the NFL so you really never know what someone is capable of. His biggest issue is ALLEGEDLY raping a woman when multiple witnesses says exactly the opposite and the accuser has been caught lying and changing her story multiple time$. Not really a good look on her credibility is it?
November 22nd, 2014 at 8:38 pm
Definition of ignorance and entitlement
While others are trying to cover up you last screwup- you are already getting press for your next screwup.
Godell ain’t turning any blind eyes.
Some great young intelligent QBs coming out in 2015. Let’s follow up our great Offensive draft, with a great Defensive draft!
Then, we can get a stable, talented QB.
We can afford to get set back another 4-5 years- wasted on another QB with no maturity or accountability
November 22nd, 2014 at 8:41 pm
Lord. That is heck of a endorsement. If Gene Deckerhodd says then I am in. Seeing what he did to BC tonight. I am definitely in. Lets do it L2 (Lovie and Licht). Lets draft the kid and have him set behind No 12 with a clip board for a couple of years. Im in….
November 22nd, 2014 at 8:44 pm
Everyone loses guys to the NFL every year. Benjamin hurt, he’s doing well in NFL out of ones that left and the center. I understand the 20 year old deal, but stealing after being accused if rape? C’mon that’s a huge flag and screaming we all knkw what again a flag.
Let’s not forget he still has to go I front of the school advisory board that never looked into this as they should of. It keeps getting pushed back and back. That will be interesting.

Double dog dare you to get you own web site and put up a poll!
November 22nd, 2014 at 9:05 pm
I’d take Marriota over Winston hands down. However, I highly doubt both will be there when we pick, so I’d take whoever is still on the board. I do agree that if Winston was so amazing, they wouldn’t be in these dogfights every game against mediocre opponents.

Mariota
November 22nd, 2014 at 10:19 pm
Architect Frank Lloyd Wright said that “Form follows function”. If that principle can be applied to the Bucs, It’s more than just selecting a talented QB in the 2015 draft. It is what the offensive philosophy is going to be for the Bucs – traditional Pats/Broncos type of offense or the increasingly popular up tempo 49er/Seahawk offense that employs a highly mobile QB. That decision should be made first before a QB is selected to fit the bill because the whole offensive organization has to be built around that philosophy.
If the Bucs have decided that they are going the Seattle route, Then Marcus Mariota is undoubtedly the best QB on the board. He has thrived in a spread type, read option offense, and if the Bucs intend to draft him, they should get the whole package. Hire Scott Frost from the University of Oregon as OC. Make the move transparent with the QB, the OC, and the offense. Lessen the timeline to put your franchise QB on the field. The worst thing we could do is try to remake Mariota, who some would call a system QB, in a new system as the Bucs attempted to do with Freeman after the 2010 season. Frost is a Chip Kelly protégé and is even a former Buc under Jon Gruden.
If the Bucs decide on a more traditional offense, they should hope the rumors are true that Marc Trestman is out as HC in Chicago. If the Bucs are going to run a traditional offense with an accurate pocket passer, then Winston is the guy and Trestman should not stop until he gets to Tampa as the next Buc OC. The man is a virtual QB Whisperer (bratty Jay Cutler is beyond help). Especially if McCown is going to be the back-up QB, the pieces immediately fall into place.
Do not let the off-field shenanigans color your opinion of Winston any more than they did with Farve or Broadway Joe or Rothelisberger. These flawed but superior talents had something called “It”, and Winston has “It” in spades. Many of you think that his having to come from behind is a knock on his ability. No! The scouts see an accurate, poised, and unrattled winner that wins under duress with a lesser team than he had last year – yet he stills wins – matter of fact, never lost a college game!
The Bucs will pick the right QB for their system if they pick one at all. If they pick Mariota, they will get a good one. And if they pick Winston, I will not be bothered one bit about the non-football stuff believing that they picked a QB that has “It”. And “It” is all that matters to me. That’s why they’re called coaches!
November 22nd, 2014 at 10:23 pm
Jameis Winston is a Low Rent Thug.
Lovie Smith is a deer in the headlight scared for his job joke of a coach.
Leslie Fraser is just a flat out moron.
Add up all of the above and these three wrongs end up drafting Winston and we have 3 more years of a stupid franchise.

…..ummm Patrick, there are NO great defenses in college anymore. But Louisville was statistically ranked number one in the country when they played them. C’mon man. Don’t just talk out of your anus, actually do some investigating. Just because you haven’t heard of a team, doesn’t mean their no good.
November 22nd, 2014 at 10:46 pm
Some thoughts in no particular order:
1. Joe(s): THANK YOU for such a wonderful, enjoyable, informative, entertaining site and for providing us all a (usually) sane forum for discussing our team and airing our opinions/grievances.
2. Poll idea: How about a poll that measures how much we hate reading tedious requests (read: DEMANDS) for what kind of poll you should run? Give it a break, people. The Joe(s) write and poll what they want!
3. LOTS of Gator and Cane fans (who also love our Bucs) are clearly against drafting Winston, overlooking his talent and focusing on the off-the-field drama that follows him. I’d be interested in their opinions regarding MISTER Derrick Brooks and Warrick Dunn. Personally, I don’t care for Oklahoma or Nebraska, but I’m damn grateful to have GMC and LVD on our team.
4. Some of these posters need to accept the current reality that there is absolutely ZERO chance that L&L get ousted this offseason. Once that basic tenet is realized, might I suggest that you either a) get on board and start accentuating the positive, b) hold your tongue and stop spreading your bile, or c) find the bandwagon of some other team to jump on (or some other fan site to post on) and spare us your “FIRE EVERYBODY!! I KNOW MORE ABOUT FOOTBALL THAN CAREER PROFESSIONALS!!” rhetoric. It’s tired and ignorant.
November 22nd, 2014 at 10:51 pm
What has he done to you? Cause you are talking about the guy like you know him personally. Have none of you ever got anything for free from a girlfriend or family member, wife, friend, etc. for free? We’ll crab legs, that was a hook up gone wrong. But he didn’t snitch, cause the person would’ve lost their job. I know a guy who knows a guy. Trust me. Also, he’s a thug for screaming out a phrase someone else started? How about sexual assault, defendant caught a ride home after alleged assault happened, sound like rape to you? Stop believing all the negative reports who want the FSU team to lose. This is about a young man’s life. What if it was someone you cared about, would u be in such a rush to judge?
November 22nd, 2014 at 10:54 pm
Bucs never pick the right player what makes anyone think Lovie will get this top 3 pick right???
We suck at drafting
November 22nd, 2014 at 10:56 pm

November 22nd, 2014 at 11:02 pm
He showed again today why he will not be a top draft pick . Punk
November 22nd, 2014 at 11:13 pm
so was the “hookup” for crab legs or rape?
“But he didn’t snitch, cause the person would’ve lost their job.”
then that’s just stupid! don’t snitch, ditch crap…really?
the person who gave him crab legs should get fired, he was stealing…and winston knew and willingly received stolen merchandise. so if that’s true, tell your friend of a friend to tell winston to tell the truth. (or his hairdresser)

Geez man your like an immature kid that if someone doesn’t agree with you (like most) you use your bully pulpit do shove it down there throats! We get it ! You think he is the greatest QB and u want the Bucs to draft him! I and most people outside of FSU disagree! Who cares let’s talk present day Bucs!!! Come on Man!!!!
November 23rd, 2014 at 1:22 am
If FSU played in the SEC they would be 7-4 at best. And nobody would be talking about Jameis

“Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, national champion James Winston”
So this is our next Qb let us all pray he grows up and has really learned something during his multiple press conferences where he stated he made a mistake and it won’t happen again, and again and again. Because he soon will be very very wealthy in comparison to how he is now. I’ve heard the Benjamins correct this.. I’ve never personally experienced it. I have my fingers and toes crossed for Mr Winston and for my team the Buccaneers.
November 23rd, 2014 at 9:52 am
Beware of the morality police!
November 23rd, 2014 at 10:07 am
I hope we have the chance to draft Winston!
November 23rd, 2014 at 10:18 am
Kalind I love how you mention all the top 20 teams FSU has beaten this year. Please check and see how many of those teams are STILL in the top 20. Rankings early in the season mean nothing. The Bucs over under was 7 wins before the season started. How’s that working out? They have had to face no quality opponents this year and they have struggled with almost all of them. Having said that, Winston is the real deal and I am praying the Bucs have a chance to draft him and pull the trigger.
November 23rd, 2014 at 11:24 am
Bucfan4life-
Florida State is 2-0 vs teams currently in the top 25
Bama is 1-1
Miss St is 1-1
Also, here’s a few of the juggernauts that SEC teams put on their schedule yesterday.
Western Carolina
Charleston Southern
Samford
That’s right….its November and SEC teams are playing Western Carolina, Charlenston Southern and Samford.
November 23rd, 2014 at 11:26 am
Enough with the “Joe can we get a poll on Winston? Huh huh huh?”.
November 23rd, 2014 at 12:07 pm

November 23rd, 2014 at 12:17 pm
“If FSU played in the SEC they would be 7-4 at best. And nobody would be talking about Jameis”
Yet, somehow, they managed to beat the SEC Champ last January after they had a month off to rest, after that brutal SEC schedule. After beating the best of the best of the SEC, week after week, you’d think they could dominate a creampuff like FSU right? Yet they did not. They hung with FSU until FSU started hiding their offensive signals. In reality, every FSU championship has included beating the SEC Champ or SEC division champ.
Feel free to continue your hypotheticals, meanwhile, I will point out what actually has occurred. And since everyone is so jacked about football conferences, the truth is since FSU has been affiliated with a conference, they are 45-30-2 (59.7%) versus SEC schools.
November 23rd, 2014 at 12:45 pm
In FSU’s last 6 games every team they faced had a bye week the week before to prepare for FSU. This could be the reason for the slow FSU starts.
November 23rd, 2014 at 12:57 pm
RIght there with Deckeroff. The NFL is full of plenty of gangsters beating the life out of their girlfriends and wives on piles of guns, yet the 20 year old who steals crab legs and and screams FHRITP in the student union is one most the most hated individuals in these United States. It will be a big mistake on any team to pass on Jameis.
November 23rd, 2014 at 1:16 pm
@Luv.
I vote yes on Jameis, I vote yes on Gene in Bucs Ring. It’s high time we get ourselves a true franchise QB. I don’t care if McCown balls out the rest of the year and is our starter next year. We need a franchise QB.
November 23rd, 2014 at 1:17 pm
Is it me, or Gene normally does not go out on a limb like this for a player? I can’t remember Gene saying things like this before.
November 23rd, 2014 at 2:36 pm
@ CreamsicleBananaHammock
The SEC in the early season was UNDEFEATED against the “other Major” Conferences.
And FSU plays in a Basketball conference try not to forget that.
The most important point is who besides FSU is capable in the ACC to win an NCAA Chip in FOOTBALL?…..In the last 10 years…….CRAP…………………let’s go 20 years?
And I am a Gata (alum and fan) first a Noles’ fan second then the rest of the SEC so I am not a basis Gata fan like every other FSU fan on here says we are.

If FSU can beat the best of the SEC on a month’s rest, on a neutral field, then then does it matter that much?
If we are to believe all the SEC propaganda, then, shouldn’t the big bad SEC champ completely obliterate FSU on a neutral field? How did FSU manage to not only not get blown out, but, actually WIN?

Gotta love FSU fans trying to justify there undefeated record. Deep down they know they play a cupcake schedule. Better hope FL doesn’t win next week because it would be very embarrassing to get beat by one of the weakest sec teams at home. They should win easily if they are SO good.

Pretty funny coming from Deckerhoff. What else is he gonna say? Winston has had an average year if he was any other QB playing for a big school. We’ll see how they do against OhioSt, Oregon and/or Alabama. I don’t think they make it to the Championship game if they play either of these teams in the semis
