“He’s Not A Bs’er”

Clinton McDonald

Clinton McDonald

Lovie Smith despises curse words. It’s a no-no around Lovie.

Just ask Brian Urlacher.

So it was an eye-opener today when Lovie raved about defensive tackle Clinton McDonald and evoked a PG-rated phrase.

McDonald, who had 5 1/2 sacks for the reigning Super Bowl champs last season, seems to top Lovie’s love list.

“Clinton McDonald has been everything we wanted him to be coming here. We wanted him to be a force, he’s one of the elder statesman,” Lovie said. “Guys listen to Clinton ’cause he’s not a BSer. You know, he’s just to the point, works hard. And for a nose guard, he’s rushing the passer fairly well. I’ve been very pleased with the leadership he’s brought. His overall play, in our locker room and on our football team, has been outstanding.”

McDonald has three sacks and has been good, but not great this season. To be fair, he wasn’t a “great” player when he got to Tampa Bay. McDonald, Joe believes, has played to his ability, and Joe sure wishes the rest of the Bucs’ free agents performed like that.

Joe thought it was funny and telling that Lovie referred to McDonald, 27, as the “elder statesman.” Fellow free agent signing Michael Johnson is the same age as McDonald and entered the NFL in the same season, but he has a lot more game experience.

i liked the addition of mcdonald, but thought that he should be 3 technique and move mccoy to RE as edge rusher. and then pickup a bully of a NT.

  2. David 54 Says:

Clinton may be the best from among the free agents picked up this year. I love the hustle I see from him. J. Smith really impresses on the DL as well.

  3. C. Alaka Says:

yea he’s not a BS’er like his fellow Bengals teammate Johnson who complains & makes excuses about his bump ankle! I watched Mario Williams play Thurs nite & said shit imagine if Johnson who is comparable in size to Williams can have the explosion that he has! He would be a force! Eh I’m still not ready to think about the Bears yet so let me keep rewinding how well Johnson performed on Sun…God knows when I will see that again!

McDonald has been a bright spot all yr! It’s hard to see when you’re playing the 1 technique but there aren’t many 1’s who can bounce over & play 3 like he can…appreciation how good this guy is!

McDonald was platooned in the Seahawks defense last year like many of the Seahawks DL’s which is one reason why they aren’t putting as much pressure on QB’s this year since they lost some of last years line to FA.
One of the best FA pickups this year for the Bucs.
That guy, with ideas like that you would make at least as good as an NFL GM as rock star Mark Dummynick.

  5. DB55 Says:

Kid has been ballin since week 1. Consistent motor always around the ball and simply makes plays. Pound for pound the best dline man on the unit.

  6. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

Did anyone else notice yesterday that McCoy was rotated out a lot at DT? It seemed like every play he was going in an out. Every time I tried to see who made the tackle I would see McCoy on the sideline getting ready to run in. Did he get paid all that money just to be rotated out so much?

  7. BucRock Says:

@C. Alaka – McDonald came from Seattle, not Cincy

thanks for the input. id like to hear your ideas. btw “dummynick” gave us arguably the best 3 technique in the game, and also brought us a 10 and 6 season. i dont think id do a better job. and strongly doubt you would either.
so i wouldnt call the man an idiot. thats just idiotic. plus he did a great job of managing the cash, and we all know thats the only reason the nfl exists.

    Skyline

Yes he did. He’s got to keep the cream churning and the cotton candy stocked. luckily we have J. Smith and McDonald creating plays for everyone on the line.

  10. DB55 Says:

McDonald was in cincy first then Seattle now tampa. He and mj were teammates in cincy 2 years ago.

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Speaking of “Dummynick”…….Mark Barron #7 pick (same as ME13)…..had 1 tackle yesterday….
    Major Wright had, I believe, 6 tackles & 3 assists…..I’ll take Wright, a 4th & 6th for Barron anyday!!!

  12. C. Alaka Says:

Thanx @DB55 for verifying my McDonald/Johnson connection…I know @Buc Rock meant well though lol

McCoy as an edge rusher? NO WAY! McCoy IS NOT athletic enough to be an edge rusher. He is big enough to hold up to the guards and centers inside and far more athletic than those guys to be a constant mismatch (interior linemen are far less athletic than tackles).

McDonald technically is a 3 tech, but in the Bucs D a good 3 tech can also play 1 tech (NG). Generally speaking, the NG in a T-2 defense has the same skill set at the UT, quick penetrator that can disrupt. The RDE in the T-2 has to have great first step quickness, be able to bend and turn the arc, and set the edge. The only thing McCoy could do at RDE would be to set the edge. He is great where he is.

  14. Matt Says:

McDonald has some dog in him, he has done a solid job so far. His best fit is as a rotational player.

MJs has the skill set of a 3-4 OLB. What would give offenses fits would be putting Gholston and MJ on the same side then McCoy and Smith on the other with McDonald or Spence in the middle. The Bucs have the personnel to run a hybrid defense.

The Bucs are in a great position now. They have nothing to lose, no one expects anythinf of them and they can try new things. Foster tipped the Banks int and played ok but let’s try Lansanah at ILB. Dude can play and has some instincts.

We need to run sweeps out of trips formations towards Jackson, Evans and ASJ. There are no yards between the tackles on basic running plays, my goodness.
