Film Study

November 18th, 2014

Mike Evans said he noticed on film last week how the Redskins like to cover a wide receiver with a linebacker.

Say what you will about the Redskins; and boy, Redskins fans sure are. They have become unhinged after getting blown out by the Bucs — but it seems they are a very consistent team.

Both wide receiver Mike Evans and middle linebacker Mason Foster noticed tendencies while studying film on the Redskins, and sure enough, they repeated their patterns against Tampa Bay, which led to big Bucs plays.

Foster tipped a pass that landed in the hands of cornerback Johnthan Banks, who raced in for a pick-six. Foster said he noticed Robert Griffin III liked to float short passes over the middle, so Foster was waiting for such a pass and he got his paw on the ball, leading to Banks’ score.

Now Joe thought one of the dumbest things he has ever seen was how Redskins defensive coordinator Jim Haslett had linebackers covering Evans. That was almost as dumb as having Adrian Clayborn cover Darren Sproles.

Evans said that wasn’t a new thing.

“They do weird coverages like that,” Evans said. “The linebacker will cover the third receiver, so they made me the receiver in the slot and he carried me, but I just outran him. The offensive line did a great job protecting Josh [McCown]. They sent a blitz, [the offensive line] picked it up and Josh delivered a great ball.”

Well, hat tip to Evans for spotting that on film and kudos to Marcus Arroyo for crafting a scheme to take advantage.

    They’re learning finally

  2. OB Says:

Good for them to notice, hopefully the rest will notice things and hopefully we don’t scheme the same plays ever game.

I’m shocked that having a LB show blitz up on the line then race back to defend an uncovered Evans didn’t work.

It was so bad, my wife noticed it before me, at some point during the first qtr she starts yelling, “They have a freaking LB covering the slot, a freaking LB”

Funniest thought (forgive me for being – glass half empty) but how in the hell does Foster just this game mention film study and tendencies?

They’ve played 2-3 backups and was shredded over the middle and poor drops down the seam of the Tampa 2 etc. I mean Derek Anderson – really???

Yeah I’m pretty much still not satisfied with many of these players because based on their performance and body of work they don’t put in the extra time in film study outside the mandatory hours at One Buc.

A linebacker on ASJ is asking for trouble. A linebacker on Evans? Are they retarded?

  7. Brandon Says:

Not a big deal to have a LB covering the slot, but only if he is protected by deep safeties. LBs in man to man covering the slot? Stupidity!

wow this is the first time all year they can quote how film study paid off….I guess the team is getting better if they are finally doing what they practice through film study

Two words. Jim Haslett. Good ole boy system still in place in the NFL. Tried to do the same tricks he did on Dallas to us. I guess he didn’t think the team watched reruns on tape.
McCown caught the Skins in a number of blitz situations and burned them good. This is why Lovie switched back to McCown was because Glennon wasn’t picking them up.
That is not knocking Glennon, the kid only has one NFL season under his belt so far.
