“Fabulous” Grade For Oneil Cousins
November 3rd, 2014Lovie Smith insisted today that Mike Glennon is his choice — for now — at quarterback. The Bucs have a couple of good QBs, Lovie said, and whoever plays gives the Bucs the best chance to win. You’re seeing Glennon because he’s the choice.
But what about revived fill-in left tackle Oneil Cousins?
Speaking on the Buccaneers Radio Network tonight, offensive line coach George Warhop raved about the job Cousins did filling in for injured starter Anthony Collins.
“I wasn’t surprised how he played. I thought he did a fabulous job,” Warhop said. “I told him on Wednesday, ‘Hey, you’re going to be the left tackle.’ He said, ‘OK,’ and he went out there and did his job. You know, O is very, very, very prideful. And he doesn’t want to let anybody down.”
Warhop reminded listeners that he was with Cousins for three seasons in Cleveland and Cousins has performed at all tackle and guard positions.
So will the Bucs stick with Cousins even if big-money free agent signing Collins is ready Sunday?
Will the Bucs roll with the hot hand or defer to the shaky player with the big contract?
Maybe it’s a tough call. Maybe not.
Collins was dreadful in his last game against the Vikings, and he’s great in other games, and awful in other games, too.
Joe’s not sure what Lovie will do.

Personally I was shocked and amazed by how well he played. Only gave up 1 sack that I saw and it was more mankins not getting over to help than cousins. Dude I was dreding this, cousins at LT but….
Which led me to my next thought. How the F does Lovie not see this? Isn’t this what the F preseason and all those practices are for? Lovie can’t she who is better at which positions? JFC Lovie get your S together.

That was probably the best game the o-line had this season… Running & Pass Blocking… (too bad ‘The Neck’ couldn’t capitalize…)
I don’t know if Cousins was that big a factor, but as a whole, maybe the o-line is starting to gel… A lot of that goes to Rainey too…
Maybe its time to bring back McCown. Now that the offense line is gelling, and we finally have a run game…
Glennon couldnt do it, he was given a 2nd chance and he’s still consistently losing…. Only fair to give McCown a 2nd chance… If anything, maybe he can hit his receivers in STRIDE! and USE ASJ! …eventually get Sims going… so Jameis will have some recievers with experience under their belts when he takes over!!!
Tank it For Jameis!!!

DB55:
re: Lovie.
This is by far the worst coaching job Joe has seen. When Schiano went 0-8, well, he’s a college guy over his head. Lovie has been in the NFL how many years, 18? Took a team to the Super Bowl. Yet this team is worse than Schiano’s squad last year.
It is mind-blowing to Joe how bad of a job Lovie has done. Never would have dreamed this under Lovie. Virtually every thing Lovie has done has blown up in his face. It is unreal.

Joe
Unfortunately I’ve been saying it since day 1. When he released the oline, brought in mccown n frazier I knew we would struggle. Reading all ps that we would go 8-8 or 10-6 I just didn’t see it.
Then it all became clear when I researched his season records. Lovie only won when Rivera or marinelli led the D. He didn’t win more than 9 games wo them. Frazier is no Rivera or marinelli. Tedford is no Norv turner. I yelled as loud as I could but fans said I was full of it.
Well the proof is in the pudding. Lovie is a hot mess with an ego and a serious lack of talent or coaches evaluation skills. We’re in trouble. Big trouble? Is there any other kind?
November 3rd, 2014 at 8:04 pm
For anybody who cares about PFF grades, they rated EDS as the best center yesterday. The entire O-Line got positive grades except for Cousins, who got a -0.8, which is still better than Collins. Mike Evans got an honorable mention for receiver of the week.
The defense got a spectacular grade, with just about every player on the defensive line getting a very good grade except for Michael Johnson.
It’s a shame special teams really screwed us.
November 3rd, 2014 at 8:05 pm
@DB55
Yeah because Chicago ONLY lead the league in takeaways and the Bears had a 10-6 record the year he was fired… I’m pretty sure Ron Rivera helped with those turnovers while he was at Carolina!
Sounds like you need to do some better research….
November 3rd, 2014 at 8:11 pm
“Lovie only won when Rivera or marinelli led the D. He didn’t win more than 9 games wo them. Frazier is no Rivera or marinelli.”
Thats pretty telling… The only way I can stomach another season with Lovie is if this D shuts it down in the last 8 games, or if the Glazers pry Marinelli from Jerry Jones’ botox-injected sausage fingers…
We should be as hard on Frazier as we’ve been on Lovie…. But then again, Lovie’s calling the shots in the F.O…. and he’s handpicked his coaching staff as bad as he’s hand picked those FAs.

@OneLove
Marinelli was the DC in CHI in 2012…
November 3rd, 2014 at 8:19 pm
listened to will musgraves before gators game, surprisingly he was smart and
and thoughtful in all his answers to questions. not getting that vibe from our coach who should be on hotseat for poor personnel decisions,clueless answers
financially wrecking our team. shut the front door on his ability to shop for free agents and personnel decisions. have a meeting with ownership and grade him on his performance so far. we need a rich mckay type here.
November 3rd, 2014 at 8:29 pm
@The Ether
Oh so it was Rod Marinelli that was responsible for that 10-6 record??? The same guy that went 0-16 while he was the head coach for the Detroit Lions! Great point! That makes a lot of sense now!
November 3rd, 2014 at 8:31 pm
We paid a backup LT starter money. It’s embarrassing
November 3rd, 2014 at 8:33 pm
Lovie needs to step away from the F.O…. Its safe to say that Licht had most to do with the (all offense) Draft, and that Lovie had more to do with all those Defensive FAs…
If ASJ & Sims turn out, then give Licht the Front Office…. Let Lovie focus on the Xs and Os… He’s in way over his head at the Front Office Level… Like Schiano was in over his head coming from the collegiate level… Like Rah was in over his head… and so on.

You bet your ass!! A LOT of coaches arent built to be HCs… *cough! Raheem!! Plenty of guys better suited as coordinators! Like not all HCs are BUILT to make Personnel Decisions! *cough! Lovie!! * cough, cough!

DB55, like must eternal critics, you have blinders on at all times.
You want to give credit to Marinelli and Rivera, but none to Lovie for hiring them. One of the primary responsibilities of any administrator or the head of any organization is to hire the must qualified person for managerial positions.
I wish his decisions had borne more fruit by this time but I am not ready to give up on Frazier yet. I have set at the outset that as soon as he knew Tedford wasn’t going to be available for the rest of the season he should have hired a qualified NFL coordinator.
After watching the team lose another game dur to special teams, I believe this should be the first coach to be replaced,
November 3rd, 2014 at 9:11 pm
“Which led me to my next thought. How the F does Lovie not see this?”
You labor under the assumption that the best player always gets to play. That’s not really true in sports at any level for a variety of reasons.
in this case L&L spent big bucks on Collins. Benching Collins simply confirms what we already know. L&L had a horrid off season signing F.A.’s and wasting millions of the Glazers dollars.
November 3rd, 2014 at 9:43 pm
We betta draft Winston or next year will be a failure too.
November 3rd, 2014 at 9:45 pm
DB55- I didnt ever want Rah or Schiano fired nearly as bad as I do Lovie…. and only this far into a season. We lose before the snap 90% of the time. I can pause it presnap and tell you what will happen- and I am NO EXPERT. Glennon getting hit every play, lets send 5 out on routes on third and forever- instead either putting in multiple backs to help- or TE’s- did anyone see Antonio Brown’s TD the other day? 2 man route- Roth could hold on to the football forever and wait until his freak WR got open….. because they protect their guys with playcalling and scheme. We literally do the opposite of what coaches are supposed to do game in and game out. I literally wont buy or contribute a DOLLAR to the Bucs until he is gone. No new logo license plate lol- no bucs merch for me! Ill keep the better looking jerseys anyhow. #Glazershavekilledallmyteams #Bucs #Manu

As I was writing it that thought entered my mind. Politics, crazy!

I think he hired them bc they were friends, just like frazier. But ask any Bears fan and they credit Rivera + marinelli too.
November 3rd, 2014 at 10:22 pm
@DB55 I kinda figured you “loved dudes” to begin with. You don’t need to come out of the closet publicly like this… As for me making you look smart?? If you think thats what i’m doing then you don’t need someone to b!tchslap you.. You need to just b!tchslap yourself…
@The Ether
“Like not all HCs are BUILT to make Personnel Decisions! *cough! Lovie!! * cough, cough!
Oh like the Personnel decision to have Ron Rivera and Rod Marinelli as his defensive coordinators??
November 3rd, 2014 at 10:30 pm
Another example on MNF of how incompetent we are. Luck completed a sketchy pass to Fleener, and got his team to the next snap lightning fast to limit the amount of time the Giants box has to decide to challenge. TD results from smart play (low hanging fruit IMO, any competent team should do this). Next drive Giants forced to challenge when they arent sure if they want to because Luck forces the issue. I learned this in Madden- there are too many instances where I am like wtf to count. Lets send our slowest receiver on one of the slowest developing routes in the tree on a third and forever against the Ravens when Gelnnon has 2.5 seconds to toss it before being destroyed….. its just unreal- I literally know more from Madden football then Lovie does from his “experience” directing coordinators.
November 3rd, 2014 at 10:33 pm
@Meat
Yeah you CLEARLY know more than Lovie Smith. That’s EXACTLY why your posting on this forum instead of coaching on the sidelines!! Great point!!!
With all that “Madden” experience your probably the next Greg Schiano!!
November 3rd, 2014 at 10:36 pm
does lovie come off as sharp or a forward thinker? im sorry this league has evolved past dungeys tree…the worst thing the glazers did was give that dated mind full control
November 3rd, 2014 at 10:37 pm
Sarcasm bro…. fact is that I understand that not jamming wideouts and standing in cover 2 shell coverage over and over is not going to work without a decent reroute…… while Lovie calls it over and over. I dont mean I actually know more, but while I am screaming at the screen presnap the nightmare I foresee usually ensues. Lovie puts us in positions to lose on the reg. Running to weak unbalanced sides…. forecasting the run by being too transparent…. being too conservative…. poor offensive scheme and personnel groupings…. our whole team is reacting to the opposition instead of dictating what will happen. The best teams force you to adjust with personnel or scheme. The Eagles make you defend every inch of the field…. running simple and well-designed 5 yard screens and identical formations with multiple looks. Run a jet sweep, then an option, then a deep bomb out of the same formation and keep the d guessing. 21st century football the rest of the nfl is playing. We are not.
November 3rd, 2014 at 10:39 pm
Before halftime last game…. we let 25 seconds or so tick off the clock and went into the 2 minute warning like we were winning by 5 TD’s. The announcers were like…. what?! Stuff like that….. just too much to count. Ridiculous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
November 3rd, 2014 at 10:41 pm
And I learned my clock management from Madden- my only relevant experience. Still has me managing a better clock than Lovie did yesterday.
November 3rd, 2014 at 11:03 pm
@Meat Please stop embarassing yourself and go back to playing “Madden”. What’s even more funny is i’m pretty sure you suck at Madden too… LMAO!

November 3rd, 2014 at 11:16 pm
So it’s still Glennon for another week? Disgusting.
I’d like to see Butters play again at least once just to see if he’s worth writing off or not.
November 3rd, 2014 at 11:37 pm
@Zam
Butters! That’s exactly who he is!
We need a Cartman.

The Bears missed the playoffs in five of Smith’s final six seasons after a post-Super Bowl power play when Smith began exerting the type of influence the Bucs just granted him. It was February 2007 when Smith, armed with a new contract, proclaimed “trust me” after firing defensive coordinator Ron Rivera. A month later, Smith pushed to acquire safety Adam Archuleta. Later, he endorsed Devin Hester as a No. 1 wide receiver. Lest we forget linebacker Jamar Williams, who supposedly made Lance Briggs expendable.

Oniel Cousins
Thank you and congrats.
Terrible in preseason- but obviously worked hard to improve.
Played very well Sunday.
Nice to see someone strive to improve!
Good job
November 4th, 2014 at 1:07 pm
I would rotate them and and see who is matching up better.
