Verner: No Way We Should Lose The Game

October 5th, 2014

There wasn’t just pain in the Buccaneers’ locker room. There was a little anger and frustration, too.

Alterraun Verner hung the loss squarely on the defense.

Joe would agree they earned must of the blame.

“There’s no excuse. The way our offense played, they had given us a two-score lead,” Verner told Joe. “There’s no way we should lose the game. Because we do pride ourselves on being a defensive team, and being a team that you can rely on our defense.

“We did not come through today. We did not come through today for our offense or for this team. We made some plays, but we didn’t make enough. And we didn’t make them in the critical situations. It’s a broken record kind of every time I say we didn’t make enough plays, but it was definitely [the situation] today.”

The Bucs allowed 511 yards. There’s not much more to say.

Yes there is. The defense was utterly exhausted. They were on the field for most of the game especially in the beginning, then they get a stop on Brees to end the game and have to march right back out there once overtime began. You could see they were exhausted on the last play of the game, nobody had enough energy to even muster up a tackle. I attribute that to not being able to run the ball, thus lengthening the game. But the reason for this loss was an exhausted defense.

You cannot hang this game on Mike Glennon….no matter how the haters try. He did play well enough to win…..our defense was getting pushed around all day…..the yards proove it.
We had an 11 point lead twice…..sure we got the safety but that was on the playcalling and penalties….not Glennon.
We had no sacks and once again….for the 5th time this year…we couldn’t run the ball.
If I hear one more time that we are committed to the run….I believe I’ll personally come down and slap Lovie….(not communicating a threat here)…..just an expression of frustration!!!

  3. Robert7 Says:

Should have used a timeout in OT

  4. WalkdaPlank Says:

How many holds did the Saints get away with?

  5. Trubucfan22 Says:

Good point Andrew. Running the ball on an exhausted defense is like stealing candy from a baby.

  6. Max Says:

The play before the final interception of the game, where the saints receiver FUMBLED, was taken away from us by the refs.

That was CLEARLY a fumble and I’m pissed there was nothing done to review it.

  7. RastaMon Says:

Can’t run the ball…defense will back on the feild….IT is THE OFFENSIVE LINE run blocking….they simply can not run block !

  8. unbelievable Says:

We should have tried a couple bombs at the end of the game. Had timeouts left and their defense was reeling. Lovie is conservative, his year out of football taught him nothing, and his clock management is still piss poor. At least the offense put up some points.

  9. Trubucfan22 Says:

Glennon played very well most of the game, he didn’t lose us the game. But he didn’t do enough to win.

  10. WalkdaPlank Says:

No way the Bucs were going to win a shootout against that POS Drew Brees. The only way they were going to beat him was keeping him off the field, or RUN THE BALL. If this O-line wasn’t so garbage they might’ve pulled it off.

  11. Incgnito Says:

Praise satan in moving out of Florida. I’ve never lived in such a corrupt AreA like centeral an south Florida. Just a bunch of crooks and con artists, but I’ll always bleed pewter and red from my time in Tampa.

  12. SAMCRO Says:

Just means when they come to Tampa we’ve got to win to force a split.

  13. theodore Says:

Yeah, a tired defense was the problem. Must have been that hot, Tampa sun.

  14. Incgnito Says:

Awaiting moderation: it would be beyond stupid to not keep glennon.

  15. Ray Rice Says:

It seems like we are always getting called for holding. I recall plenty of times where I saw Mccoy and Johnson getting held.

  16. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Max

I was surprised they didn’t review that play….it was inside two minutes….I think it was a fumble and we recovered it…..

  17. buc4lyfe Says:

I’m not a pessimist I think I’ve just been a bucs fan long enough to get excited over one win last week. Michael Johnson disappeared again, Leonard Johnson run over AGAIN, Gerald mccoy blasts through the line and runs right past running backs, but people can see the value in mason foster, they got turnovers. They play like rookies who haven’t learned not to over pursue on room plays.

Crazy thing I just realized, Michael Johnson is sipped to be leaning to play wider than he’s used to but if he is why are all sweeps, toss plays and reverse plays room directly at him and he’s still invisible

  18. Architek Says:

    Chile Please –

Don’t make excuses for these professionals. You get 16 games THATS IT 16.

You suck that sh$& up and get a stop!!! You are now on pace to win 5 games!!!

  19. Louis Friend Says:

The defense was on the field for over 90 snaps, and 86 plays the counted from scrimmage. That stat tells you EVERYTHING about why it went downhill in the 4th quarter. They created the problem for themselves earlier, but by the end they had nothing left.

    It was inevitable.

  20. Tbucsfan Says:

Glennon played well. This loss is on the shoulders of the defense. Can anyone tackle on this team any more?

  21. "that guy" Says:

the flags are thrown the way they are because the nfl has more important fans to worry about, like saints, and steeler fans. face it the nfl is a business, its about the money not about the fair play. i cant even believe i watch this league. remember when the nfl apollagised for calling a game winning bucs touchdown back ?

  22. Soggy Says:

The glennon haters will only look to his very few mistakes for full blame for the loss, . To the haters it is not a team loss its all on glennon, he did not throw for 511 yards, he took that saftey and all the other BS is all on him, its not a team loss right haters. Glennon was about the only good thing in the first quarter unless he oiled up the ball. The whole team lost this game including the coaches..
When you see glennon as the big problem you show yourself very football challenged. Peace

  23. Mike10 Says:

Why does Leonard Johnson continue to get playing time and how in the hell does he keep making this team… Ol boy doesn’t bring anything to the party!

  24. Jef Says:

Are pass rush has got to be lights out or this cover two will never work. This draft we have got to address this issue. Our secondary is exposed due to this.

  25. Harry Says:

Yeah, the defense with soooo much preseason promise, pretty much sucked.

  26. David Says:

Guys, please stop with the Mike Glennon love. Yeah he played well but isn’t this supposed to be a team? There was something he could’ve done better, a read he missed so he wasn’t perfect ok. Win as a team, lose as a team.

  27. Bogiedr Says:

Mr. Derrick Brooks always preached to “stay in your gap, trust the system and stay in your gap” … Our defense did not. They better buy in quickly. Also, Mike played well enough to win … I am on the bandwagon if I am allowed, we have a qb.

  28. buccadawg Says:

This group cant call themselves a team. Now we just have to hope they dont screw next year up too.I personally think we need a fresh look at weather the tampa 2 has run its course and we need a D cord with a different approach than the head Lovie.

  29. RP Says:

Near the end of the game, how can Breees throw a ball to a fan in the stands, on a line 10 yards away from the nearest receiver, and not get called for intentional grounding? Because he’s Drew Brees?

Bucs get gashed on screens all the time, but can never run one well themselves.

Tackling was pretty bad today. Didn’t hear Dane Ruud Flethcher’s name called much, or anyone on the D-line, except for McCoy. Major Wright looks pretty minor out there.

What happened on the last play of regulation? Martin had a nice run, then ….? A knee? Why not go for pass interference and a field goal?

    What is Dietrich Smith on???

all day and on every article, all week will be how glennon did great but the defense/ special teams/ coaching lost the game. N.O. defense wasn’t all that great but they have something the Bucs don’t, a quaterback! (who threw 3 interceptions). But glennon is great and the (QOTF), get real!!

  31. phil Says:

Everybody should have known we were in trouble when Lovie came in and cut the best player on our team. All of the players know you don’t get better getting rid of good players. And you have a coach who wants to play Tampa 2 even though in doesn’t work anymore. So the only question I have is how many years are we going to have to suffer with Lovie as our coach? Hopefully the Glazers will have the balls to do what Jimmy Haslam did last year when he fired Rob Chudzinski because he wasn’t the right guy. Lovie is not the right guy.

  32. bob in valrico Says:

defense did enough to win.pic six, 2 other interceptions, one that set up a td,one that stopped a td drive. held NO to field goals early in game. if we had an eleven point lead. match scores and we win.WE CAN NOT GO BACKWARDS
and win. It is up to qb and coach to watch playclock and call timeout and
avoid delay of game penalties.play calling and execution at the end of game
    did us in.

Still can’t get over the fact that MG8 is a good QB that will get better as the season goes on. Unlike the rest of the team.
