“The Grass Is All Dewy”

October 17th, 2014

McCoydrillEarlier this week, one way Gerald McCoy defended himself against attacks from those who call him too soft was to remind the world that the day after his wife birthed twins he was at One Buc Palace running gassers at 6 a.m.–  by himself, his own decision to continue his fierce offseason regimen.

McCoy’s dedication already had been documented, but Joe was glad to learn it at least rubbed off on someone.

Mike Glennon was chatting on the Buccaneers Radio Network this week and was asked to comment on who impresses him working behind the scenes at One Buc Palace.

No. 8, who Greg Schiano raved was a “grinder” and a relentless worker, said No. 93’s work is inspiring.

“I would be getting here pretty early in the offseason to work out, when no one on the team was still here, and I’d drive by in the morning and look at the practice fields are already see Gerald out there running with a sled or doing whatever he’s doing,” Glennon said. “And still the grass is all dewy and all that, but Gerald would be out there busting his butt and his play shows how good of a player he is and why.”

Glennon also cited Vincent Jackson as a role model for how hard he runs routes in practice, among other things.

Joe loves all this stuff, but when is it going to show up on the field. One thing Jackson and McCoy have in common is that they’re real nice-guy types. Nothing wrong with that, but maybe, as Joe searches aimlessly for answers to a lost season, the Bucs do need some more edgy characters.

The grass is all dewy after Bucs games too, due to them pissing themselves for 60 minutes.

A whole team full of nice guy’s is great. They’ll probably finish last in the division again, but they are first place in etiquette, manner’s, and good sportsmanship. And hey I just thought of a defensive strategy for us: after we help them up off the ground, we could towel them off and give them some water too. That’ll might slow the other teams offense.

  3. Harry Says:

It is unfortunate more players don’t have that kind of work ethic. Some I believe are content with their brand new FAT FA contracts.

“…the Bucs do need some more edgy characters…”

This in my opinion, is where an Incognito type would come in handy. Get in a teammates face and demand MORE! Why would someone like McCoy, work so damn hard, year around, and not demand more from someone like M Johnson, or Cheeseburger Bowers (is he still playing?) or the Oline, etc??

I think since we are such a nice team, we should let the opposing teams use our locker room and we use the visitor’s one. It makes sense because home field advantage does not matter with us anyways. Especially how Lovie prepared for it all off season with the mid day practices. Remember how he preached things would change at home games. We should keep a diary of the the broken promises so there is accountability when this messed up season ends. Sort of like a annual review. At most jobs, you would get fired for less failure than this.

You can be dedicated and still soft

  6. Buddhaboy Says:

The reason you dont help someone up is simple: The more someone gets knocked to the ground, the more they get tired from getting up. And they also get a little “quit” in them. Saying, to themselves, damn, i dont like this anymore.

So when Gerald helps someone up, he is preserving some of their energy. Giving the other team more juice.

That is how is see it. Comes down to simple battle plan, or the art of war.

  7. Sick of this $hit Says:

Enough with Gerald being a nice guy crap. He helped people up off the ground since he came into the league. And its only now that people are coming down on him for it. Give it a rest. He is who he is, and he made it clear that hes not gonna change for anybody.
Go buy a Lions jersey if you want a guy that constantly takes cheap shots and stomps on dudes throats when they are on the ground. IMO, its not just the coaches that need to figure out how to get through to the players. The leaders on this team like McCoy and David are still trying to figure out how to inspire the rest of the guys too. I think they can do it though.

I think there are plenty of offense lineman who have had been knocked on their butts continuosly by 93 who don’t exactly think he is a nice guy

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I wonder if they could actually hear the sound of wet grass like … Really don’t need the escalating non-football references here. –Joe

  10. Architek Says:

It’s not translating and the whole team needs to be out there working extra hours on technique and the system to climb from the pits of NFL hell.

  11. Louis Friend Says:

Sportsmanship and performance aren’t synonymous. There are plenty of rotten to the core players who are mediocre to lousy, so I don’t think what McCoy does or doesn’t do with helping people up is that big of a deal. Sapp used to help QB’s up (a few of them as I recall) after sacking them. Brooks helped people up from time to time as well.

But I guess when you’re losing everything is bad. So with all the crap going on in the world I guess you guys are entitled to take a dump on the rare person who happens to help someone up after a play. Big whoop.

Pretty sure I’m more pissed off about gap integrity being lost, poor coverage and bad execution than I am about some guy being a gentleman.

  12. Zam Says:

It’s not like GMC was a nasty guy that turned creampuff. He’s been plenty successful as is. The problem is that guys really don’t have any clue where they should be.

I’ve been wondering about positions coaches, specifically:
Joe Cullen – Defensive Line coach
    Mikal Smith – Safeties coach

Because to me the play of those two units has been the problem.

  13. Louis Friend Says:

    @Zam

Wonder if Smith would ever have the balls to fire his son? Got to agree that the safety play has been wretched. Guess the apple fell far from the tree there.

  14. Hawk Says:

Seems to me that if someone knocks you down, that is a little embarrassing. If they have to help you back up, THAT would start messing with your head.
I remember hearing that some opponents were told to help O.J. Simpson up, every time he was tackled. The theory was that, if they didn’t, he might lay there for an extra second, or two, of rest and come back with another big run.

  15. OB Says:

    Joe

There is a big difference between nice guys and those who are nice only when the game is not on, between the whistles. You tell me that Mr Brooks was not a nice guy then, or Mr Lynch or Mr Barber or ….. When the play was on they were like cold blooded killers for those who had the ball, whistle blew, Mr Nice Guy.

Ask any combat veteran, if you are mean all the time, no one wants any part of you.

  16. Ray Rice Says:

The way Gerald is playing I think he should have logged more dewy grass time because it sure hasn’t translated on the field.

  17. BoJiim Says:

I like Mr. McCoy just the way he is.

  18. DB55 Says:

Breaking news: the TB bucs plan to change their name to the Tampa Tampons bc they are only good for one period and don’t have a second string.

  19. buctebow Says:

I’m glad Melman wasn’t out on the grass pushing sleds with GMC, he’s dewy eyed enough already.

  20. LutzBuczFan Says:

    Lol DB55.
