Sean Payton Explains Draft Love Of Glennon
October 2nd, 2014It seems former Bucs rockstar general manager Mark Dominik and Greg Schiano might have broken the heart of Saints head coach Sean Payton.
Payton revealed today in great detail that Glennon was high on his list to draft and back up Drew Brees.
The Bucs took Glennon in the third round of the 2013 draft. The Saints were in line to draft two picks later.
Payton was asked to assess Glennon today and shared a story about how close the Saints were to selecting Glennon.
“I think he’s got a real good arm. I think his timing, his feet are very good. His feet are exceptional, I think, for his size. So he’s got good athleticism,” Payton said of Glennon. “He can locate the ball and make all the throws. He was a player that we had real high grades on in the third round. Ironically, that discussion that came up, I can remember like it was yesterday. [Tackle] Terron Armstead, Glennon was right in that cloud, if you will.
Payton clarified that “cloud” means a group of players the team wanted to draft.
“I just remember the evaluation process. I had a chance to work with closely, a coordinator Dana Bible, who’s retired now. But Dana [who coached Glennon at N.C. State] I remember calling me on Mike and giving good reviews, I mean over and above. So we studied more tape. And he was someone that was in the mix. I recall him specifically because we saw a lot of things we liked. And now, unfortunately, he’s in our division and we’re watching him.”
Joe’s not sure what this all means, other than that a noted offensive guru like Payton, an ex-quarterback himself, thought Glennon was a third-rounder with potential.
As Joe’s written many, many times, Glennon has lived up to his draft status, and even exceeded it slightly. The real question is whether he can be more than an excellent backup. Hopefully, Lovie Smith will let us all find out this season and not have Glennon go back to backing up a career backup.
October 2nd, 2014 at 5:50 pm
Lovie benching Glennon now sure seems like it would be coach suicide, unless mike screws up bad..
October 2nd, 2014 at 5:50 pm
yawn…
October 2nd, 2014 at 5:50 pm
Interesting… I wonder if Payton thought Glennon was good enough for a back up only? or did he have the intention of him taking over for Brees when he’s done?
October 2nd, 2014 at 6:00 pm
You don’t draft a back up, to only be a back up in round 3.
October 2nd, 2014 at 6:04 pm
Wow, that made me tear up. Not one Glennon slight. #amazing
Welcome to the light Joe …you have finally earned your station. 🙂

@Captain Stagger
Tell that to the packers
October 2nd, 2014 at 6:28 pm
Mike Glennon has ALL the tools (and no a good 40 time is not necessary for QB)… A golden arm, quick release, good footwork, anticipation and fearlessness. Get a cohesive system around him and coach these guys up around to him to be where they need to be and he will put up some sick numbers I guarantee.
it’s this Buccaneer fan base that will be Glennon’s worst enemy. I couple bad games where he forces some bad balls or takes a few sacks in a loss and there will be fans ripping him apart and shouting chants of some first round prospects name.
how many QBs with great potential do we have to chase out of Tampa before we decide to “be patient” with one? God forbid we actually SUPPORT the kid and, as fan base, let him see that we have hope for him to become the one thing we’ve never had. If a guy like Sean Payton could get put his faith in this kid, why can’t most Buc Fans?
October 2nd, 2014 at 6:30 pm
Proud of the kid, hopefully Glennon’s maturation will make all of his former detractors eat crow.
In other news:
Next year’s draft will be in Chicago from April 30 to May 2!!!

I don’t think anyone would argue that Glennon has not live up to his draft status.
October 2nd, 2014 at 6:36 pm
Well clearly this is just another case of a guy who has no credentials, no experience with quality QB’s, no success in the NFL and an agenda raving about Glennon.
Seriously who is this guy anyway?
We all know the Big Dog says Glennon is only a backup so who is this Sean Payton clown to disagree with him?
October 2nd, 2014 at 6:36 pm
^Steve Duemig Would. He hates Glennon.
October 2nd, 2014 at 6:38 pm
bigpoppabuc… exactly!!
October 2nd, 2014 at 6:50 pm
@bigpoppabuc, It seams like it is the coach mostly not the fans, lovie would have Glennon warming the bench right now if it was not for sore thumb josh..
October 2nd, 2014 at 6:54 pm
Yup Col. Winters’ team will be done when Brees retires.
October 2nd, 2014 at 6:55 pm
I’m sorry Joe, but that picture of Payton and Schiano is downright disturbing.

if you really want to know his value, put him on the trading block.
I bet you could get a 2nd rd for him right now..

Amar & Joe….earlier today I clicked on read more and it hesitated for a second started to load and then just refreshed the front page cover of JBF not going to the read more at all.
October 2nd, 2014 at 7:25 pm
I sure wish we had the quarterback whisperer, Jeff Tedford, tutoring Glennon on a day-to-day basis.
October 2nd, 2014 at 7:43 pm
I dunno if we’ll really see what Glennon can do til. He get’s some real receivers. Not getting a decent 3rd WR really hurts now. A raw rookie TE. Martin and Rainey are ok at best pass catchers. Just V-Jax and a bunch of question marks and practice squad players. Our 2nd 3rd and 4th WRz this week might have pumped your gas two weeks ago.

poorglennon:
MG8 has some good targets. Once Evans is back, him VJAX Seferian Jenkins and myers are all viable options. As fo WR3, I was saying in the preseason that I see some Ike Hilliard potential in Louis Murphy. Ike Hilliard was a great WR3 and if Murphy could get to that level we would be set.
October 2nd, 2014 at 8:03 pm
Finally! Joe admitted that we do not know if Glennon is the man or not. He once referred to Glennon as a 3rd tier QB. [remainder deleted].
Um, Glennon is a third-tier QB in the NFL. Joe hasn’t wavered from that. Glennon has much to prove. And it’s foolish to predict who writes what or whether it’s collaborative.–Joe
October 2nd, 2014 at 8:12 pm
Last week’s game against Steelers was what elevated Glennon from a good backup to an excellent backup status. It is similar to McCown filling in for Cutler and playing lights out, but only in a small sample size. Now if Glennon can do that week in and week out, despite some losses, he becomes a solid starter. Once Glennon reaches that level where he looks like a Flacco kind of QB minus the achievements, I will change my username to “Glennon Worshipper”.
October 2nd, 2014 at 8:31 pm
Didn’t the Cardinals offered up a second round pick for Glennon……thought I read that from Our GM or Cards GM. Glennon is the real deal and he beat out Russel Wilson at NC State, not saying he’s better, both good QB’s. Probably thought MB had bigger upside with size and arm strength.
October 2nd, 2014 at 8:38 pm
Exterminator,
We can all agree Glennon has improved to some degree. 🙂
He’s still got a WAYS to go before he gets crowned starter.
October 2nd, 2014 at 8:43 pm
@eric
I really wish that was true but unfortunately it’s not. Wilson wanted to play baseball but his coach wouldn’t allow it so he transferred to Wisconsin and glennon took over.
October 2nd, 2014 at 8:44 pm
People just need to understand that Joe is only MGM because the Bucs we’re 0-3 and hey what the hell anyways….we need to find out what Glennon has.
Joe when readers start to understand that. Hopefully all this nonsense will stop.
I know why you went all in on Glennon. What I don’t is why everyone keeps insisting you’re a flip flopper on the matter. I think it’s just going to take time.
Not to insult anyone, but there is a few Buc fans out there that are not the sharpest pencil in the box.

1987,
Winning cures all, give Cannon MG8 the ball.
October 2nd, 2014 at 8:51 pm
That’s nice and all, but I don’t trust anything that Sean Payton says. I remember him saying how much he liked our former FB Eric Lorig when he was in tampa shortly after they signed him, and the last I heard Lorig was MIA with the saints. So take everything this guys says with a grain of salt.
October 2nd, 2014 at 8:53 pm
@SteveK…as far as I’m concerned about Glennon. The kid has the tools that can be worked with and he HAS improved from last season. Even if I was anti-Glennon I’d have to admit he played well and improved.
@DallasBuc…wherever you are. I’m starting lose respect for you. You were on here all summer long and during the 0-3, bashing Lovie. Now that the Bucs won a game your near silent. I suppose if they lose this week, you’ll be out in full force again next week. Then again you could be busy, but it’s not what it looks like.
What’s the deal e o?

An unnamed source (not the janitor or maybe it was) told me that Lovie rigged the captains voting. He said the team voted glennon as captain but Lovie switched it to mclown.

So Sean Payton saw quality back up material in Glennon? I wouldnt disagree with that. One day Glennon will make a mighty fine back up for us. 😉
October 2nd, 2014 at 11:51 pm
And lets please stop the Mariota to Tampa comments. He sucks. He had some really bad games last season, and he’s having another bad game tonight. Just don’t know what people see in him. imo He is a bust waiting to happen. Winston on the other hand…
October 3rd, 2014 at 1:08 am
Hey Joe,
I’ve repeatedly got the same pop up on my browser from here about Adobe Flash, as others have.
October 3rd, 2014 at 1:14 am
Payton said he liked him to BACK UP, BACK UP, BACK UP, AS IN SECOND STRING, to Drew Brees. He is kissing reporters butts, it’s all part of the game, he probably has no respect.for h, it’s mind games.
October 3rd, 2014 at 1:54 am
And what did I tell you, Mariota and the overrated oregon ducks go down. They are not all that they’re cracked up to be.
October 3rd, 2014 at 1:55 am
whelp, mariota sucks like he did last year.
hundley is sucking.
winston is a danger to pick.
hopefully, some qb will surprise and rise.
seems like last year was the year to draft a qb! guess we’ll see if lovie screwed us after all.
October 3rd, 2014 at 1:58 am
imo Winston is no danger. He can spout off at the mouth all he wants in the pros, there wont be a student body to offend. Some team will be very lucky to have him.
October 3rd, 2014 at 1:58 am
andrew, nice to see someone else not liking mariota. i saw him sucking in games last year, too. tonight, arizona’s redshirt freshman qb seemed more impressive to me.
October 3rd, 2014 at 2:01 am
winston has made numerous poor decisions off the field. i hope he matures and is just tired of school and bored.
right now though, he seems the only decent pick at qb.
October 3rd, 2014 at 2:03 am
Yep, I agree. I dont know what it is, but it just seems like the few games that I’ve watched him play, in all of them he hasn’t looked impressive at all. Then I hear people say “wow look at Mariota!” and I just dont get it. If the bucs get a chance at him, they should probably pass.
October 3rd, 2014 at 2:05 am
glennon did keep florida state out of championship contention. played a great game in the clutch.
October 3rd, 2014 at 2:05 am
Yea, Winston has made some immature mistakes, but I dont think it’s anything to be to concerned about.

@ “that guy”
Dude the majority of their team went to the NFL, what do you expect? And yet they still get the W. Know why? because that freakin guy is a winner. I would love for the bucs to draft him, but I dont think he will be available to us, unfortunately.
October 3rd, 2014 at 2:14 am
That is to say, he is a winner on the football field. Off the field he’s got some cleaning up to do.
October 3rd, 2014 at 8:21 am
We got a few more games left. Can we talk about trades and the draft a little closer to seasons end? Right now, MG8 is the man. Give him a chance PLEASSSSSSSSS.
October 3rd, 2014 at 11:16 am
ummmmm, they are 1-3 with a lucky win. qb was a big hole last year. it wasn’t addressed properly. it is STILL a big hole. it needs to be addressed properly in the draft.
October 3rd, 2014 at 11:48 am
“have you noticed some MUCH closer FS games then last season? winston is not that good. his wr make him look great.”
LOL…Winston was the number one QB prospect coming out of high school and every school in the country wanted him for a reason.
