Lovie Wrong On “Big Picture”

October 27th, 2014

LovieRefereeJoe nearly plunged his skull into the nearest toilet yesterday upon hearing Lovie Smith talk about how, following an ugly home loss to the Vikings, the Bucs are in the same boat they were in before the loss.

Lovie’s wacky logic led him to proclaim the following:

“If you look at the big picture, right now we’re in the same position we were before we started the game,” Smith said, referring to Sunday losses by the Falcons and Panthers.

But the reality is the Bucs are not in the same position. Before the game, Tampa Bay was two games (plus a tie) behind division leading Carolina with 10 games to play. Now the Bucs are in a similar boat with nine games to play. They lost a heck of a lot of wiggle room with that loss.

Even in the fantasy world of the Bucs still contending for the division, it was a huge defeat. Those pesky division tiebreakers that include conference records? The Bucs now moved to 0-6 in the NFC.

For those hallucinating about a Bucs playoff run, odds are they’re going to have win at least all seven remaining games against NFC teams (Green Bay, Chicago, Washington, Detroit, Atlanta, New Orleans and Carolina) just to have a prayer at winning a division-title tiebreaker.

Joe understands the love and hope of the diehard optimists, but even they know the Bucs are not in the same position they were before yesterday’s offensive display.

    He’s a f’ing moron…

  2. bucrightoff Says:

I honestly think Lovie is happy he got a 5 year deal for the money he was looking for and simply doesn’t care if he gets canned right away. One year’s work for 5 years salary? Think we’d all be ok with that. And from the looks of it so is Lovie.

  3. RastaMon Says:

Lovie is in WAY over his head….I listened to his press conference yesterday and was underwhemled by his monotoned empty words…then by chance I listened to a long interview with #55 on all sorts of subject…a stark contrast in leadership and answering questions. Lovie is an empty suit that has been swept to this point in life by his association with the greatness of others. I don’t mean to be harsh…but that is what I see……

Lovie is/was wrong in everything. Playoffs? Playoffs?!?!

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Yes….but the only problem with same position is another week & another opportuity squandered.

Its time for the media to hold Lovie’s feet to the fire…..time to rattle him (and he can be rattled)…..don’t let him get away with those kinds of comments.
This cute joust he does with the media over questions like who the starting QB is…..letting him say the running game was “OK” yesterday without challenging him.

  6. DB55 Says:

    Joe,

What he means is that in the big picture we still suck! Joe, Are you going to ask him again if he plans to use the bye week to find an OC? Dude doesn’t do crap to improve the O coaching staff but want to bitch and gripe about no 3rd down conversions. Truth is there were conversions but holding penalties called the plays back. #bigpicture

  7. billy buckaroo Says:

    Honestly:
What can he say to a mess like this?
There are no good answers for anything that has went on.
The Master Plan has flaws and it is showing.

  8. Ray Rice Says:

Yup. We are in the same position we were before the game yesterday: Weak a$$ coach, weak a$$ players, weak a$$ system, weak a$$ mentality, FUKN weak all the way around. Yup. Lovie for once is right.

  9. NJBucsFan Says:

    I can’t stand Lovie

  10. RastaMon Says:

The Peter Principle as it applies to Lovie

Here are the core principles of Peter’s bungling world of management:

    1. When you’re great at something, you might get rewarded with a promotion … into something you’re terrible at. A typical example, Peter said, is if you’re a great rule-follower who suddenly is placed in charge of making rules and decisions. You may well freeze up in your new role or gum up the productivity of everyone else.

    2. Once you’re promoted to your level of incompetence, you probably won’t get fired and replaced with someone more competent. Instead, others will work around you. Why aren’t you fired? Perhaps because you probably know too much about your boss’ business to be booted out too casually. Or because people have sympathy for you because you’re working so many hours. Or because the people who are supposed to judge you have reached their own level of incompetence, and damned if they’re able to realize how unproductive you are. So you now have reached the ominously termed station called “Final Placement.”

    3. When you’re competent, even a dummy can see your output. And you’re being rewarded for that output. But once you’re reached incompetence, there’s little or no output from you. At this point, you’ll be judged by your input—by how early you arrive at the office, by how cheerful you are, by how you’re a good citizen. Rest assured, incompetence is usually not enough to get you fired; only “super-incompetence” is enough to get you fired. And, ironically, “super-competence” will get you fired too, because now you’re just making everyone else look bad. As Peter said, the hierarchy must be protected at all costs.

    4. Incompetence is perhaps inevitable. So you have to decide whether you want to rush toward the oblivion of Final Placement (it does have its share of perks and benefits, after all). Or you have to decide whether you want to forestall it as long as you can.

    5. If you do decide to rush into a sterile future, Peter said you need to exercise the power of “pull”—by attaching yourself to superiors who can help pull you up quickly. And he offered some unnervingly witty advice on how to manipulate them into a promotion.

    6. If you’re smart enough to realize that you don’t want to be pulled up the ladder to career limbo, you’ll find a happy place where you can be productive and useful, and you’ll fight like hell to avoid getting promoted.

You can’t just refuse promotions, Peter said. It creates too many problems. Instead, you have to incompetent fire with incompetent fire, by mastering the art of “creative incompetence.”

  11. ForgotAboutDre Says:

Not even pertaining to the terrible logic itself, how can an experienced NFL coach possibly think it’s okay to more or less say “Yeah, it’s okay that we lost, no biggie”? You have to know that’s the last thing people want to hear after losing at home.

  12. Patrick in VA Says:

If this were following a game against the Pats or Dallas or someone like that then sure, we’re right where we were at the beginning of the game. This was one of the few games on the schedule that we had a prayer at winning. Now we have one less game like that on the schedule. The one we have left that we can hope to stand a chance at is next week so we’re going in to that game with no momentum and no signs of life. We are not where we were before the game. We are far worse

  13. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    The Big Picture-

We’re Now Playing for the 1st Overall Pick in the draft!!!!

I don’t wanna hear ANY…. moral win BS this year.

We’re playing for the Top Pick.

  14. HawaiianBuc Says:

I give him a lot of credit. He did his best to find something positive. I sure as hell couldn’t find anything. I’m sure he’s trying to keep his players from packing it in. You think we’re bad now? Wait and see how much worse it will get if they actually do pack it in!

  15. DB55 Says:

    Luvmybucs

Not sure we can get the 1st pick. I think we get the 3rd a best. Something to do with beating Pitt took us out the hunt for the 1st pick. Not positive but I think I read that somewhere.

  16. mike h Says:

the owners here this crap! from him and what think things will be better what idiots wtf!

  17. RCH Says:

The reality is come Thursday the Bucs will be three games out of it which seems like a pretty big hole at this point.

  18. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Time to pack it up. Start building toward 2015 & 2016. This season is a wrap.

  19. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @DB55

Somebody will screw up and grab a win or two.

  20. SAMCRO Says:

i bet Lovie is missing the confines of his “Man Cave” in his Chicago basement about now, and wishes to his deity, that he had never taken the call from the Glazers. One and done? really? This is Groundhog day or we are just caught up in some perpetual mind @#&k. I’m at a point, in my 30 year fandom, where I’m going to start bitching about our team, 2 years in the future, because it’s the only thing that remains consistent.

We are on this merry-go-round that bad franchises with impatient fans find themselves on when they are constantly, and perpetually changing.Whoever takes over now after L&L is really behind the eightball, and the media, and fans will have to take there foot off the new regimes throat from the beginning and allow them, afford them the time to rebuild, or this will never end.

  21. LUVMYBUCS Says:

If the owner don’t have the passion for the Biz anymore. Time to entertain talks w/Edward J. DeBartolo, Jr.

  22. Tye Says:

Find a good replacement, send Lovie back to his basement!

That is all I keep thinking after every game and press conference…. Has any HC ever acted this naive before?

  23. Robert 9 Says:

NFL package – cancelled today. back to enjoying my Sundays.

Frigg off lovie, you’re a moron.

I’ll come back like any good bandwagon fan, when the team starts winning. but I suspect it will be a long time with this guy in charge.

    peace!

  24. StPeteBucsFan Says:

I’m not sure many of these players are in a position of “packing it in”. That is if they want to stay in the league.

Film doesn’t lie and who would want to pick up any player who has packed it in.
    Where is JFro these days?

Yeah most of them have already made ten lifetimes worth of salary and perhaps that is the problem. As Cyndi Lauper once sang..”Money changes everything”!

Go down the list of the most cut deserving players and they are ALL already set for life! Bobby Rainey is not going to pack it in. I don’t think any of our rookies will pack it in. Perhaps some vets who really don’t care if they’re in the league next year might pack it in. But even there I just sense to much pride in most athletes.

Logan Mankins will not pack it in. Collins? Not so sure. EDS..probably not
Dotson..don’t think he will…who cares if our right guard packs it in. We do not presently have a guard on this team worth keeping with the possible exception of Mankins on a restructured deal.

  25. DB55 Says:

Trade mccown for Jared Allen and Vjax for Lynch. Actually at this point what does it matter.

Lovie is a great coach, he knows more than all us fans, media, experts, etc
GMC is the best 3tech in the league. He only got 0 solo tackles cuz he gets triple teamed every play (cough cough)
MJ is great. His 3.5 sacks last year was a fluke, he’s on pace for 12 sacks this yr. his personal best.
Mccown is the answer if mccown wasn’t hurt we’d be 5-2.

I wish you stupid fans would shut up and let the professional do what they know best. Because you know “it takes time” in 3-4 years we’ll be the bees knees and the rest of you guys can go suck lemons. (Pure sarcasm all of it)

  26. mike h Says:

    rob 9 I hear ya!

  27. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @StPeteBucsFan

Let Hardy finish the season as the Intern Head Coach. Trade off any & everything thats not nailed down.. w/ the initials LVD. Or we can keep everybody….. and just keep playing the way we’re playing right now. Either way wrap it up.

  28. biff barker Says:

Packing it in is only a couple of losses away.

Yesterday was a massive opportunity for redemption….

We looked hapless, clueless and outmatched. Again.

  29. ihateloviesmith Says:

this man is an absolute moron and what’s worse is he actually believes this B.S. so why doesn’t the media call him out at post game press confrences, i’ll tell you why, they do not want to offend one of the NFL’s good ole boy stooge, who is obviously lost all perception, of where he and his team stand. because if lovie gets offended I would think that the perpetrator, of said offence will not be invited to anymore press confrences. I said this from the hire of Mr smith that it was a rush pick, but the glazers clung on the belief of NFL analysts and commentators of what a good fit and yada yada yada he was, for tampa. until the fanbase comes together and demand a winning product from the ownership expect the same ole same ole every year. you ask how we can hold the glazers accountable? for one boycott home games, stop buying their merchandise, and the home town media stop showing up for these lame ass propaganda meaningless postgame press confrences!

  30. Meat Says:

rasta- could not agree more. A Charlie Weiss clone- promoted based on the success of the team he was merely a position coach on….. I want him gone more than I ever wanted Schiano fired…..

  31. Soggy Says:

Around and round we go where it stops nobody knows.. Sucks though.. Lovie what have you done?

  32. simeon 97 Says:

Lose out. We’ll probably win 2-3 more meaningless games and not get the ideal pick.

  33. ihateloviesmith Says:

spread the word on facebook, twitter, anyone you know that hold tickets or are planning to buy tickets, why show up to be pissed off all day and week long, for this charade of a NFL team. we as consumers should get a square and honest deal for our hard earned money, should we not? why go to a grocery store if they constantly stock there shelves with over priced generic products, that you can eat, but really leave a bad taste in your mouth afterwards, I bet the GLAZERS would start to get the point after a couple home games.

  34. 1bucfan88 Says:

CLUELESS. What planet does this dude reside on?

  35. Another J Says:

Lovie’s been wrong all year, What’s one more mistake…

  36. Joe Says:

i bet Lovie is missing the confines of his “Man Cave” in his Chicago basement about now, and wishes to his deity, that he had never taken the call from the Glazers.

Yup. Lovie must be beside himself that he signed a four-year, $20 million contract that he gets paid the full amount for whether he wins another game or not, and got to move from Chicago to Tampa. Joe would be suicidal for such a mistake.

  37. buc4lyfe Says:

There’s no one in Tampa that thinks this team can make the playoffs except lovie. It’s about those who are hallucinating when talking about our quarterback position

  38. Buccfan37 Says:

I’ve faced reality, the Bucs were not as good as any body they have played. Minnesota was clearly the better team. The Bucs gave their best effort coming off the bye, there’s your talent gap Buc fans. It’s fixable, it’s going to take time to improve. Time is all I have left. Buc fans know about patience, it’s what keeps fans enraged about the product put on the field. If nobody cared anymore you would’nt hear a peep.

  39. Brandon Says:

I’m a huge optimist. I’m optimistic we lose the rest of our games and have a shot at Mariota or Winston (and yes, I’ll take the gamble on Winston-Cam Newton has been a model citizen since coming to the NFL, I see the two as very similar in their collegiate off-field misdeeds.

  40. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

RastaMon, you said what has needed to be said about Lovie, and it is sure true.
Lovie rode Tampa under Dungy (The team Sam Wyche built) for all it was worth, and landed a job in Chicago with Urlacher and talent already in place.
Why everyone thinks he is such a “good coach” is beyond me, since our guys seem always to be out of position, and we also never seem to make 1/2 time adjustments, as we did under Tony Dungy.
McCoy has been quite kind to Lovie when he is asked why we keep losing, but has hinted several times that we are being outschemed!

  41. john mason Says:

Don’t think I have seen this bad a team ..(Coaching, Offense, Defense, costly penalties) since Leman Bennett years…and that was really bad…I have paid my dues …suffered thru it all….tired..can’t watch this shit live or on TV anymore this season…I will have to just ck the results…I just get to pissed off at this piss poor Sunday showing…as for Lovie…he seems like he is in over his head…no idea what to do on offense…totally lost..got some help via anyone who has been an OC if even temporary …Now I see what all the Chicago people were talking about..they warned us…he sucks…this is a passing, offensive dominated league now…a good defense is great and can win a game now and then but you need to move the ball …plus our defense sucks big time…Thx Joe…and so glad for Joe Buc’s Fan…cause I will not watch another game…will just ck in with you for the latest. Original Buc Fan now just burned out!

  42. Gt40bear Says:

Is it me or does Lovie sound more like Raheem with each passing loss? Was all for his hiring but damn it man!

  43. Legarrettes Blunt Says:

Why do they still hold out hope for the playoffs when we are simply playing horrible football. Playoffs? Playoffs?
