“I Haven’t Done A Good Enough Job”

October 16th, 2014
Bucs secondary coach Gill Byrd speaks out.

Bucs cornerbacks coach Gil Byrd speaks out.

One reason the Bucs defense is getting tasered game in and game out is the putrid pass defense. Starting quarterbacks (not just scrubs like Derek Anderson and Austin Davis) are frying the Bucs secondary like it is a high school seven-on-seven tournament.

The pass defense is so bad, you have to wonder if seven lawn chairs couldn’t defend any better. At least, then, a receiver has a chance of tripping over a lawn chair.

Joe thinking of how Joe Flacco rifled through the Bucs secondary, Joe just wants to throw his coffee against the wall it ticks him off so bad.

Well Bucs fans, if you are like Joe, then Gil Byrd feels your pain. The Bucs cornerbacks coach said yesterday that if you are going to point fingers, point at him.

“I’ve seen that I haven’t done a good enough job of coaching them,” Byrd said. “That’s what I’ve seen. I’ve seen that I haven’t gotten the players into position to where they feel comfortable, they’re playing fast, and it starts with me. It really does. And I have to do some self-evaluation over these next four days. I’ve got to get better. And I think it will be reflected in the players.”

Byrd talked about how he’s got to better individualize instruction.

“We’re out for production,” said Byrd, a former NFL cornerback. “We’re out to be successful. And if we’re not doing that on a consistent basis, it’s me. It starts with me. If it’s more meetings, if it’s more individual meetings, if it’s more film, if it’s more walk-through, then I have to get it done. I have to do it. It’s on me.”

Joe asked Byrd, a former Chargers Pro Bowl cornerback, whether he thought NFL labor laws limiting practice time was hurting the speed of learning. Byrd gave an emphatic, “No.”

“As a coach, you have to make the time, you have to do the things that you need to do as far as schematically, as far as some guys learn differently, different methods of teaching that resonate with some guys and not with others,” Byrd. “You can’t just teach one way in the room and think everybody’s going to get it. Everybody can learn in the room and everybody has a learning curve, so it’s up to me as a coach to find that learning curve and what resonates with one guy. If I’ve got to do something different and take him aside, then I have to do that. But it’s up to me to get that done.”

It is noble that Byrd is falling on his sword for the play of his cornerbacks, but at this point, Bucs fans have heard all the talk and are not interesting in talk any longer. They want action. They want results.

If the pass defense continues to be such a sieve that it toys with the all-time worst record for passing yards allowed, then you can bet Bucs overlord of football operations Lovie Smith will make personnel changes. Those may also include coaching changes if things don’t shape up.

If by “not good enough job” you mean the all time
worst secondary in the entire history of the NFL then yeah, I agree.

What the hell can he say…” its them not me.” He knows he will lose his players if he did that. No way to get production out of them like that. I understand he doesn’t suit up and just coaches the position and not overall defense but this secondary is lost. No bumping, no rerouting WR’s, playing 8 yards off on 3rd and 3. I mean its all FUKD up right now. If a QB Is doing a 3 step drop them jam the dam WR’s or put a hand on them and disrupt the timing. Byrd knows hes gone if they don’t improve.

  3. RastaMon Says:

Dungy put a staff togegther from different coaching backgrounds…all had highly successful backgrounds….Lovie surrounded himself with friends/yes men….many former players gravytraining NFL pay scales

You can’t coach heart and pride Gil!

  5. Buccfan37 Says:

Didn’t Lovie choose his coaching staff? I would say the blame lays at the top, Lovie’s defense is all Lovie. No excuses from the underling’s needed. Coaches should be payed by performance results league wide.

Friggin’ Hilarious or sad depend9ing on your perspective. Let the 2014 drama continue.

The guy who’s supposed to help Buccaneers players with life skills and off-field issues was arrested this morning for driving under the influence.

According to Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times, Bucs director of player development Isaiah Harris was arrested for DUI early this morning.

Was watching a little film with a writer yesterday, Major Wright (who is supposed to know this defense) was lost, completely lost. He looked like he had no efing idea what he was supposed to be doing.

  8. OneLove Says:

@flmike When has Major Wright ever NOT looked LOST!?

The Flop Era is out in full force!

Floppy Hats…made famous by FA Flop Carl Nicks
Flip Flops…Lovie thinking he’s still retired and lounging in his basement
    Belly Flops…Licht’s moves thus far

    2014 Bucs….a flop of monumental proportions !

  10. DWE Says:

need to ask Byrd if he knows how to fix the secondary. everyone with any sense has been asking for the wide receivers to be played tighter at the line by our corners and do some hitting at the line. the coaches don’t say what they have been doing wrong, just got to get better. no sh$t Sherlock

  11. theodore Says:

Three step drops by Flacco combined with no bump in run coverage resulting in open slants for easy TDs.

  12. NewTampaChris Says:

At 1-5 with a -84 point differential, NO ONE has done a good job.

  13. dick2111 Says:

I’m with you Joe, I just want to see the Bucs play some decent football on defense. Right now it just looks like 11 guys running around with each doing their own thing. No chemistry.

Personally I think the problem is a combination of talent and coaching. The talent obviously isn’t there at about half of the positions, BUT … neither is the coaching. I wasn’t seeing any adjustments whatsoever last Sunday. Ravens kept doing the same thing over and over, successfully. So did the Bucs in response on defense, unsuccessfully.

I think that’s the definition of insanity.

  16. Patrick in VA Says:

It’s disheartening how many years now Joe has broken out the lawn chairs comparison for the Bucs’ secondary

  17. Jon Says:

It’s true, who is the safeties coach Joe??? It doesn’t matter who plays they are out of position all the time. Goldson, Barron, wright, mcdougald etc. Coaching to me is killing this club

  18. buctebow Says:

Well let’s dummy it down for them then. What to do: Find your spot, get in your spot, stay in your spot, find your man, stay with your man, look for the ball, get the ball.
What not to do: Find your spot, get in your spot, stay in your spot, find your man, let your man burn by you, look for the ball, watch the ball go for a touchdown.

  19. OneLove Says:

OH SO NOW its because we don’t run enough bump and run!?!? I mean I don’t want to bring up recent memories, but Joe Flacco’s TD to that new name WR Campanero was on bump and run coverage… Please stop using the “scheme” as an excuse for our rosters lack of talent!

gil byrd was a great player in his day.
    being a great player
    doesn’t
always translate well to being a
    great coach.
    players play and coaches teach.
if you can’t teach you can’t or shouldn’t
    coach.
by your own public admission you are
    incompetent.
    resign immediately.

  23. bucstop.com Says:

RastaMon, Dungy’s staff had almost no experience when he picked them. this is a veteran group. Your argument is completely invalid
