“He’s Given Us A Lot Of Hope”
October 15th, 2014Lovie Smith issued strong support for Mike Glennon today at One Buc Palace.
Joe asked Lovie today about how his relationship with Glennon may have evolved our changed since Glennon became the starting quarterback three games ago, replacing injured Josh McCown.
Lovie said he takes pride in treating all players the same way, but he went on to heap hefty praise on Glennon.
“I’ve made the statement, Mike is our quarterback of the future. saying he has a future with us. That came a little sooner than we thought. His play. He’s played well. Yeah, we’d like to have a couple of plays [back], but looking at the overall picture and what Mike Glennon has done, he’s given us a lot of hope.
“As far as our relationship, Mike, you have a big role in leading us back. And he’s accepting that challenge.”
Joe considers those pretty strong words from Lovie. It’s also an acknowledgement of just how critical the QB position is in Lovie’s mind — possibly combined with what Lovie thinks the future holds for the Bucs’ impotent running game.

Sounds like he’s sticking with the Cannon.
October 15th, 2014 at 2:11 pm
Don’t believe the hype!!
Mccown starts ASAP!! Remember there’s room for a player like Revis on this team. Tedford is getting better and will return when he can. Mike Williams isn’t getting cut.
October 15th, 2014 at 2:21 pm
Glennon is making a nice resume for his future on another team. Can’t fault the kid for this debacle. He’s not a great QB. But he went 18-23 for 250 yards when he had time to throw on Sunday. That tells me he’s at least a competent player.
This kid will probably never make a pro bowl – but he’ll have a long career in the NFL. Most likely not with the Bucs, who will eventually let him go, likely as not in the hope that the next ‘future’ QB will perform better with an equally bad supporting cast of linemen.
October 15th, 2014 at 2:23 pm
Glennon is getting better, and gives us a reason for hope.
Let’s hope Glennon can develop into the face of our franchise this year.
This is a great opportunity for Mike, and so far he is making good of it.
October 15th, 2014 at 2:24 pm
This team is soooo bad I just can’t take anything positive from what they’re trying to do anymore. I’ve never been this low on the Bucs. But I think I’m to the point where I’m ready to walk away from this train wreck. And I lived through the Leenan Bennett and Ray Perkins years. This feels much worse than what those idiots did.
October 15th, 2014 at 2:28 pm
Kobayashi Maru this is a no win scenario, he’d have to be Tom Brady like with these weapons and offensive line to make a difference, the only way Glennon can be the guy he is would be with a top flight defense and strong supporting cast otherwise no matter what I may be smart to draft a quarterback. He’s 24 still developing and this team is bad. He’s taking to long to develop and it would be crazy to give him Andy Dalton money when his contract is up
October 15th, 2014 at 2:30 pm
DB55 nailed it
October 15th, 2014 at 2:50 pm
is it true he requested Eric page be signed back to the team
October 15th, 2014 at 2:57 pm
I’m glad he’s given someone hope. When I sit and watch this garbage, I surely don’t have any.
October 15th, 2014 at 3:18 pm
Bucs4 – love the Trek reference
It seems to me that the generally accepted way to build an offense is that you start with the O Line (because they have very long careers) then it becomes a trade off about when you add skill players (WR and RB, maybe in today’s NFL include TE) or you go QB next. — this order of events is a luxury that few teams have but it does beg the question where are the Bucs? – we have good and developing skill players, questionable O line at best (with questionable stability over the long term) and a QB that we cannot accurately evaluate because the O Line + a cascade of other problems on offense. I am not so sure that the 2015 draft is the time to go get a QB. . . and, while I am hopeful that Glennon will be “the guy” it is hard to make the case today.
October 15th, 2014 at 3:35 pm
All I know is I was excited for the hire and I’ve been tuned in from day one to what lovie is saying and he lies like a politician so even though we all think Glennon is the best going forward I just think he’ll find a reason to put Glennon back on the shelf. At this point I trust schiano’s words more than lovie
October 15th, 2014 at 3:40 pm
Lovie is pissing on our legs and telling us that it’s raining.
October 15th, 2014 at 3:49 pm
Patience is a virtue. So, be patient. The team is learning new systems on Offense and Defense. Also note, the absence of Tedford hasn’t helped matters and Arroyo is doing his best to execute the Tedford Offense and is undoubtedly planning and calling it differently than Tedford would.
October 15th, 2014 at 3:52 pm
Lovie can say anything he wants about the QB, as with all of the hits taken due to the porous Oline, it just is a matter of time before Glennon is flattened and McCown has to go back in.
October 15th, 2014 at 3:55 pm
I’ve been a fan of this team since I was 12 years old!! Born in raised around this team since birth. I love Tampa. And I’m a proud member of the mike Glennon Mob’ now that that’s out I will say this. It’s ABOUT DAM TIME LOVIE’ all I ask from u as a man is that you unlock the defense because your job is on the line now buddy and you kno it!!! Mike and the mob wanna win now so I suggest you find that dam pass rush or your replacement will be!! south Florida Bulls head coach he is from a better coaching tree!! Now get to work please

Drew, based on your comments, the BUCS should give long time season ticket holders a 50% refund since we are expected to be patient once again!
October 15th, 2014 at 4:16 pm
Buc4lyfe,
You might not want to say be like Tom Brady. Tom hasn’t been playing well the past couple of years. I know stats don’t matter here at JoeBucs only winning. However, Foles is winning and 1 int away from leading the NFL in turnovers. Doesn’t mean I want Foles. Now if you said he has to be like past Brady then that would make sense, but Brady now isn’t that great.
Let’s take the past 3 games (Glennon has started the last 3).
Glennon over 3 games: 6 TD and 3 Ints and 865 yds
Brady over 3 games: 7 TD and 2 Ints and 822 yds
That is pretty close to the same stats. So I guess you could say you have he is like Tom Brady (statistically speaking).
Of course though the defense is not anywhere close.
Tampa Bay: 422 yds/g and 415 penalty yds
Patriots: 319yds/g and 312 penalty yds

We already invested 5 years in a 1st round QB (Freeman) and missed on that pick. I’m not ready to make that investment again and potentially set us back even further.
Glennon isn’t costing us much right now and I would say we got a steal in the 3rd round of the 2013 draft. If he doesn’t pan out, we move on easily.
This team and the fans need to stop being so greedy about getting the next Peyton Manning, Drew Brees or Tom Brady. Be realistic: it’s likely not gonna happen. Because #1: there’s honestly not many QB’s like them. #2: History proves that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will not draft the right franchise QB in the 1st round (especially with Lovie in charge).
We can win with Glennon. He’s still a young QB and will continue to grow. Giving up on him and letting him go/trading him would be a huge mistake that will come back to bite this franchise in the ass when he has success with another team. We gave Freeman 5 seasons so why not give Glennon at least 2-3 seasons?
October 15th, 2014 at 5:07 pm
Any idea how many season tickets are sold this season?
Add about 80% of that number to about 5000 visiting fans and there’s there’s the game day attendance figure.

bottomline…..if we dont get the oregon qb….we are a cellar dweller…..mike glennon has no wow factor…at all….immobile….he looks like an awkward newborn baby giraffe out there…..i hope we get the number one pick…..your lookin at 2 more years after this until we are relevant……..think if we still had talib…bennett…. zuttah…blount….all those guys…..in my opinion we have two strong safteys….golston has to go…..we need linebackers, pass rushers, lineman…….its gona be awhile folks
October 15th, 2014 at 5:48 pm

Before sifting through this mess of a post (capitalization, punctuation, spelling) I was fully prepared to slam you… except you’re pretty spot on. I’m not sure if it a necessity for a QB to have a WOW factor, but can he make plays or get the ball to the right guys to make plays when it counts? I’m not so sure he can. He’s got 10 more games to prove the doubters wrong.

Hope is an optimistic attitude about future outcomes, i.e. things will get better.
I know we all hope that the offense, defense, and special teams will be better in the future, but how can the sum be greater than the parts?
Here is my question for you all.
Which individual players are playing better this year than last under Coach Lovie’s tutelage and system?

October 15th, 2014 at 7:14 pm
Let’s not take a highly rated qb because he might be a bust. Hell, might as well just skip the draft all together. While we’re at it, lets just skip the games too because we might lose.
October 15th, 2014 at 7:30 pm
So you would rather draft a QB every other year in the 1st round until you find a Peyton Manning? We wouldn’t have a QB until 20-30 yrs from now.
October 15th, 2014 at 7:32 pm
@Skyline Crew
Fans like you are the problem, did you just compare stats of a guy who never misses the postseason, has super bowl rings and on his way to the hall of game to a guy that was garbage before chip Kelly came along, has only one good season and another guy who is back up for josh mccown going into this season and has done nothing in this league because Glennon has more passing yards after 6 game with 10 more to go? Win-loss stats mean nothing to you I guess Lol wow…. The last 3 games, Damn how much effort food you put into that useless piece of knowledge. I’m guess you think Glennon will keep pace with Brady but lol maybe if he can keep the job
October 15th, 2014 at 7:36 pm
You have a higher percentage of getting a hit at OL or Defense in the first round versus a QB. Look at Glennon’s class for example. He is the best QB from his class. He wasn’t drafted in the 3rd round. Look how far back the Jets have been set by taking Smith. They will probably draft a QB again this year. Same for the Bills.
October 15th, 2014 at 7:43 pm
Yes yes because that’s really saying so much but there’s a problem because that nonsense you’re talking doesn’t put fear in the heart of veteran teams and he’s still a young pup in this league, let the guys career take shape he’s nothing right now
October 15th, 2014 at 8:12 pm
Buc4lyfe, fans like you are the problem. You think the QB has to win at all cost regardless of what the rest of the team does. Guess what…Brady isn’t taking this team to the post season. No QB in the history of the NFL can put up 40 pts a game consistently. That is a fact. Until the Defense is fixed and stops letting teams put up 35+ pts a game we aren’t winning anytime soon. Why do you idiots believe that a new QB is going to fix everything? It isn’t. New O-Line and D players is going to fix more than bringing in another Rookie QB to wait 2-3 yrs on. We already have a QB in his 2nd year. Let him continue.
Also, as I posted earlier stats mean nothing here only wins. In your eyes Tebow is fuck!ng awesome because he wins games even he does suck. Pull your head out of your arse man. I also said if you were comparing him to Brady of the past then yes that would be nice. Brady now isn’t the same guy.
October 15th, 2014 at 8:19 pm
@Buc4lyfe (or never),
Fans like you are the real problem. You want a QB that is like Manning or Brady of the past. It isn’t going to happen son. Pull your head out of your arse. If you would have read what I wrote then you would have seen where I said if you were talking about Brady of the past then fine. Brady of now is not great. Look at their division and you will see why they are in the post season every year. As I said you so called fans don’t look at stats. Only wins and losses. That is fine because in your jacked up eyes Tebow was awesome. He won games he is awesome. BS he sucked and everyone knows it, but because he won games you all love him. Jesus Christ you guys piss me off to no end. Glennon is in his 2nd year as a QB on a team that sucks balls.
Do you really expect Glennon to put up 35+ pts a game? Honestly? No QB in the NFL can put 35+ pts a game every game. Until our Defense fixes their dumb mistakes and giving up 35+ pts a game we aren’t winning anytime soon. You guys have way to high expectations of what a QB should be able to do in this league. This isn’t fantasy football son this is real. Your sweet Brady isn’t winning on this team either. Nor is Manning.

Guys!
Perfect Way of introducing you to the new full time OC and full time QB coach … Can you say “Arroyo /McCown? I am good with this. Mac makes a great coach, understands what it takes to get it done, just does not have the ability to do it … But can coach it. Before any of you criticize without thinking this through … How many great players have made successful head coaches? And please, yes there have been a few, but it is not the norm. Ask Kirk Gibson how it worked out …
October 16th, 2014 at 12:46 am
I would really like it, that with what looks to very well turn out to be a very high draft pick, that we go for the best QB available. Let’s do it once and for all and get it over with. Seems like Lovie could be setting us up by building up Glennon more than he is so that he can go defense with that pick.
October 16th, 2014 at 3:26 am
What irritates me is that the Buccaneer franchise can’t trust to put the load on glennon. I mean make this a pass first team glennon has shown the smarts to do it. Even Freeman had a partially great season in 2012 but when he started sh’ttin the bed vs the saints then the rams schiano pulled the plug on that. Before that we relied heavily on the rbs to make up 75% of our offense. We can all see glennon can throw the ball pretty well. The thing about playing qb is that u don’t have to throw the ball into the breadbasket every throw but lead receivers into open areas of the defense. This regime is hesitant to do that because they’re settled on being conservative. Let glennon throw that f’cker he’s makin good decisions so far n can read when hi wrs are blanketed roll out n make a play if he’s not doing that then he’s dumping the ball for a nice 3-6 yard gain. Our rbs can make plays to get the ball to them in the flat n let them make a dude miss. That’s offense tho. Our defense needs to get as hungry as they were last year before the refs were throwin flags for unnecessary roughness. Play aggressively this defense is loaded with talent. Barron shut down jimmy graham!! He needs to come out with a chip on his shoulder n play lights out like he has to prove himself every game.

You heard it from me first a few days ago. Jeff Tedford will NOT be coming back.
Ever.
But that’s not on Lovie or Licht’s head. No one could have predicted a bad ticker situation. I suspect we’ll see some replacement coaches at a few positions in the upcoming off season.

Delson Says
“What irritates me is that the Buccaneer franchise can’t trust to put the load on glennon. I mean make this a pass first team glennon has shown the smarts to do it.”
Can’t do it. Teams already know rushing at Glennon gets good results. He has not progressed to the point where he can do very quick passes consistently. Take the last game, for example.
While the oline did NOTHING to help him, he still could have gotten the ball out quickly. Compare his release time with Flacco’s release time. Big difference.
Flacco was 2-3 seconds faster on most plays, and that’s huge. That’s why we got no sacks. He always got the ball out too quickly for our defense to reach him, and there were a bunch of close calls.
It’s an area Glennon needs to improve, but the offensive line also can buy him an extra 2 seconds if they block right. And if they can start run blocking well enough, it will open things up a bit.

“So you would rather draft a QB every other year in the 1st round until you find a Peyton Manning? We wouldn’t have a QB until 20-30 yrs from now.”
Prove it.
I’m not saying we should do it, but you know what? If you draft QBs in the first round every year, you have to find a good one within a few years. 20-30 is a huge exaggeration.
Frankly, I’m tired of people making your argument to avoid spending ONE first round pick on a QB. The position will never be fixed if it isn’t addressed in the first round.
Check the odds. Yes, there have been good QBs found in later rounds or even that have gone undrafted. But the most success for teams in the playoffs? They found them in the first round.
Wilson, Brady…those guys are outside the norm.
That isn’t to say every first round QB is a sure thing. They aren’t. But the odds are sufficiently improved in the first round.
October 16th, 2014 at 10:13 am
BuccanneerBonzai,
Yes, the odds are improved, but you have a better chance of hitting on OL or defense in the first. We need Defense and OL worse than we need a QB. Even if we draft a QB in the 1st rd, I wouldn’t play him. Why? Because he would be killed with the OL we have. I think we could get Prescott in the 2nd rd honestly.
October 16th, 2014 at 11:29 am
Remember our past?
Steve Young (1985-86)
Acquired in the USFL supplemental draft, Young was woefully miscast as a drop-back passer. Later dealt to the 49ers for two draft picks, he became an all-time great — the MVP of Super Bowl XXIX and a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Bucs record: 3-16
Bucs stats: 267 of 501 (53.3), 3,217 yds; 11 TD, 21 INT
