Former Tight Ends Finger The Offensive Line
October 27th, 2014Yes, Doug Martin and friends need to make more defenders miss.
But the trained eyes of former Buccaneers tight ends have singled out the Bucs’ offensive line for Tampa Bay’s horrid rushing attack, not the running backs.
Anthony Becht, a film analyst for Buccaneers.com and a voice on the team’s radio network, was adamant this morning that he’s got no issue with the Bucs’ running backs..
Speaking on WDAE-AM 620 this morning, Becht let loose.
“I don’t really have a problem with Doug Martin to be quite honest with you,” Becht said.” When I watch the running backs as a whole, I think they both can improve in their pass protection. There’s no question about that. They both had a couple of bumps in that part of it in that game [yesterday] particularly. Look, you need some holes. You got to be able to get through the first level. You can see them break a tackle here or there, but you’ve got to get these guys through the line of scrimmage.
“And right now, whether it be the type of run we’re calling, the technique we’re using, it’s not just one guy not being able to get it done up front, it’s two now. And this and that, I just don’t see that improvement. I’m not going to peg it on the running backs. … Some of these other team that can run the football, you gotta get that push, get that running back through the line, and I’m not seeing that right now, and it’s happening week to week to week.”
Former Bucs tight end John Gilmore (2008-2010), who played four seasons in Chicago under Lovie Smith, also said this morning on WHFS-FM that the O-line is dreadful in all phases. “Put the film on. It’s not pretty.”
On this lousy Monday following another shameful offensive showing, Joe’s not going to pit the O-line versus the running backs. They’re all culpable, even if Lovie thinks the running game was “ok” yesterday.
October 27th, 2014 at 10:03 am
It very well might be the single worst unit (offense, special teams, defense or otherwise) in the NFL. It might not even be particularly close. And oh yeah we gutted last years line to allegedly get better. Just another reason I don’t think anyone wants Lovie or Licht doing any more damage to this roster before they inevitably get fired (whether its this year or next)
October 27th, 2014 at 10:06 am
Absolutely, Lovie said they made improvement yesteday just because the Vikings did not blow them out! Well, if Teddy had hit a few more of those wide open receivers then it may well have been a blowout.
Excuses for the offense may be stomached if the Defense was kicking butt and taking names….but Lovies Defense is not playing any better than Tedfords Offense and Tedford is not in the building.
Excuses are like Head Coaches….we need a new one!

We need to “establish” the pass in order to open up the run….I know that is bass-ackwards….but its the facts..
Joe….see if you can find a stat on our 1st & 10 running plays……yardage & percentage called vs NFL average.
It seems to me that all other defenses seem to know when we are running and are prepared to stop it.
October 27th, 2014 at 10:09 am
They are all culpable? Please Joe you can’t equivocate the backs performance with the oline embarrassment. Martin does make guys miss but he can’t make all of them miss at the same time on every running play which is apparently your expectation. Only Barry Sanders was capable of that and only occasionally. Stop defending this historically wretched oline.
October 27th, 2014 at 10:12 am
@tbbf
how do you establish the pass when Glennon does not have 3 full seconds to set his feet and throw.
I say that coaching and play calling are the major problems.
October 27th, 2014 at 10:15 am
Donald Penn wasn’t elite, but what a downgrade Collins is. Thats bad management.
October 27th, 2014 at 10:15 am
Anthony Collins is such a bad LT. Equally as shtty and inept as the second coming of Simeon Rice, the “beast” FA Michael Johnson.
Thanks for all the hard work lapdog Licht!
October 27th, 2014 at 10:15 am
same with zuttah/smith switch
October 27th, 2014 at 10:18 am
*yawn…this has EVERYTHING to do with leadership…the Bucs have zero. from the top down…everybody is just collecting a paycheck…
October 27th, 2014 at 10:21 am
“Joe thinks it is lazy to blame the offensive line. Good running backs find ways to make something out of nothing. Good running backs don’t always have a four-yard wide hole to run through.” – 2 days ago
We can’t run. We don’t have time to pass. The offensive line is horrid and they primary cause of the Buc’s ineptitude on offense. I blame the offensive line.
October 27th, 2014 at 10:22 am
This OL is so god awful that you cannot evaluate the RBs or QBs. It’s just not fair
October 27th, 2014 at 10:25 am
Worst collective Offensive line in the NFL. The small issue of not one Offensive Coordinator in the building does not help these poor wretched souls any. This is real life Halloween stuff. Hide the women and children!
October 27th, 2014 at 10:25 am
It’s hard to be blame the running backs, or the Quarterback when they have to work with that sorry excuse for an offensive line.
If that wasn’t bad enough they have Marcus Arroyo callling the offense like he’s trying to lose every game, It’s the perfect recipe for the worst offense in the NFL.
October 27th, 2014 at 10:27 am
The question becomes–
Are the offense linemen
just not doing very well at the way they are being told to block and protect
or
is the way the are being told to block and protect not very good
October 27th, 2014 at 10:29 am
@ passthebuc
If you will notice…..almost every time Glennon gets to throw/play action on 1st down….he has time….the problem with our passing plays is they are mostly on 2nd & 3rd & long…….
October 27th, 2014 at 10:30 am
The question in my mind is: Should Joe think about rewording that headline?
October 27th, 2014 at 10:33 am
These clown shoes get demolished on every play. Watch the film. It is humiliating. Apparently when all the talk about toughening up the soft play on this team the oline clearly did not believe that it applied to them. Not sure how much more soft they could possibly look
October 27th, 2014 at 10:35 am
I noticed the same thing about the defense seems to know when we are passing or running.if you watch they are picking up on something the offence is doing right as the ball is snapped they do not hesitate.maybe lineman giving some look? If that could be happening our coaches should be able to correct.
October 27th, 2014 at 10:35 am
It’s hard to do anything when everybody and their mama knows we are running 1st and 2nd down, which leads to 2nd and 3rd and long. This makes it very easy for the defense. I just can’t understand why we keep hiring coaches who can’t call plays. It’s infuriating. This team is soo hard to watch. Why did I have to be born in Tampa? Die hard for live though. It’s tragic.
October 27th, 2014 at 10:36 am
Additionally, can the special teams coach please tell his return guy to not run the ball out from deep in his end zone?
October 27th, 2014 at 10:47 am
Lovie gutted the OL and picked Warhop to take it forward.
Nice job!
BTW, this team was no better yesterday after the bye week. So much for the new season crap.
Minnesota is no powerhouse, a good team would have hung 40 points on us.
October 27th, 2014 at 10:48 am
Did anybody ever figure out why the heck Gilkey was out there? Dude went on a one-man penalty binge for a while in the first half, then he disappeared again. That crappy announcing team we had never mentioned the fact that a backup o-lineman had even entered the game. (As an out-of-market fan, that’s one of those “hidden” problems with this team sucking so bad… we get the lousiest announcing crews possible. I know that pales in comparison to the fact that we’re AWFUL, but having to listen to David Diehl and that other nimrod just pours salt in our wounds.)
October 27th, 2014 at 10:48 am
Yeah but let’s keep blaming Glennon….
October 27th, 2014 at 10:51 am
They were terrible but the Bucs are a terrible team so Fox isn’t going to put their A-Team out there to call that game.

Just to remind you, Commander, you didn’t have the team close in ANY game through 7 weeks last season. Your team was 0-7 and had been blown out almost every week. This team is terrible, at 1-6, but at least only 2 games have been blow outs, the other 5 were all decided on the last drive of the game. Call it what you want, oh ye of such short memory, but from one year to the next, that’s called progress. You’re still the worst coach in the history of this horrible franchise.
October 27th, 2014 at 10:54 am
Dude went on a one-man penalty binge for a while in the first half,
_______________
LOL! The only good thing about this awful team is enjoying the comments to describe the Bucs. “Clown shoes”, “real life halloween stuff” – I love it. Keep it coming.
October 27th, 2014 at 10:54 am
The offensive line is the most glaring of all of our problems on offense right now. I don’t care what plays you call. If you don’t have the blocking up front, you’re screwed (ask Tom Brady the first 4 games of the season).
Having said that, Stevie Wonder can see that our line sucks. Anthony Collins was getting whooped like a dog that belonged to Micheal Vick. I don’t understand why the coaches would not bench him or put TE/RB help to block on his side. Lovie continued to let him get beat the entire game. If you’re the coach coming off the bye week especially, you have to send a message. If you’re not doing your job, your gonna sit! Light a fire under these guys. That’s not happening though. These guys can play as poorly as they like and NOTHING is done. No reprimand, no benching, no consequences. It’s ridiculous!!!
October 27th, 2014 at 10:54 am
Eight weeks into the season and we STILL don’t have an experienced Offensive Coordinator? Who’s running the show up there ? Curley, Larry & Moe ?
October 27th, 2014 at 10:56 am
Two yard Doug is not long for this world. Soon to be a Pat…

Mike Glennon Mob Says:
October 27th, 2014 at 10:48 am
Yeah but let’s keep blaming Glennon….
—–
I don’t get it. Are you trying to be facetious? An attempt at irony? Did you think Glennon did much of anything well? Does he not deserve blame for not throwing to open receivers, for taking unnecessary sacks, for missing receivers by a mile, for not converting 1st downs?
October 27th, 2014 at 10:57 am
Brandon,
You may want to refresh your memory of last years first seven games. NONE were losses as bad as the Falcons and Ravens – not even close. And at least half the games were by 3 points or less. So you’re the one with the short memory.
October 27th, 2014 at 10:57 am
“Who’s running the show up there ? Curley, Larry & Moe ?”
His name is Lovie. You’re welcome.
October 27th, 2014 at 11:03 am
We know who and what the Bucs are from the head coach to the players you’re setting yourself up for disappointment if you think they’re gonna play any better we’ve played back up qb’s the entire year and they all carved us up Teddy last two games were horrendous but against us he shines our offense, defense ,special teams ,play calling , effort is abysmal I don’t wanna here what they have to say in interviews or nothing else Lovie is not being honest with us so what’s the purpose of listening I don’t even let it get to me anymore its pathetic do yourself a favor expect the worse you’ll be better off
October 27th, 2014 at 11:09 am
@MGM “They were terrible but the Bucs are a terrible team so Fox isn’t going to put their A-Team out there to call that game.”
Thanks for that insight. Do you hold the rank of “captain” in the Mike Glennon Mob? Because that was fairly… wait for it… obvious.
But yeah, exactly. Like I said, it’s just one more miserable thing about having a miserable team. We know we aren’t gonna get Buck or Brennaman. But now we can’t even get Chris Myers or Kenny Albert or the god-awful Sam Rosen. Diehl and that Kutcher guy were just terrible yesterday. As in, “Bucs O’line terrible.” They were “Garrett Gilkey bad.”
October 27th, 2014 at 11:11 am
The offensive line sucks, the defensive line sucks, the quarterback sucks, the defensive backs suck (except Verner), the safties suck, the linebackers suck (except LVD), the running backs suck, the tight ends suck, the punter sucks, our kicker sucks… Not to mention the coaching and management that also seems to suck!!!
We have two wide receivers, one linebacker, and one corner that doesn’t suck…
Oh my I almost forgot GMC… How could I forget his gold bricken ass and his half a sack…
Blow this crap hole off a team up!!!
October 27th, 2014 at 11:26 am
Brandon is either Lovie Smith, Lovie’s wife, of the guy who polish’s Lovie’s knob. Either way his defense of Lovie by constantly bashing Schiano (incorrectly I may add) is old. Lovie sucks dude. Come around to the light like the rest of us.
October 27th, 2014 at 11:26 am
How is Mankins playing? Is he just as bad as the others?
October 27th, 2014 at 11:31 am
Every unit on this team sucks. RBs should pop a few even with a bad o-line. Evans looks like a great 3 round pick. SFJ has been disappointing for a 2nd round pick. The defence is just brutal. Goldson won’t even be in football next year he is so bad. Barron is a bust. Our #2 corner and #3 WR would be on most teams practice squad. Next up the Cards will trade up with Raiders to get Winston. Or even worse they trade us for Glennon. And with more than a second to throw a pass….he Excels. Nick Foles would be a bum on this team
October 27th, 2014 at 11:45 am
Remember when Blane Gabbert lit us up a couple years ago or Charlie Batch. We are not that bad. The league has to look into unfair advantages for certain teams. It’s unfair Car,ATL and the saints get 3 bye weeks. NFL needs to take a page out of soccer rules. And drop 2 teams to the Cfl next season.
October 27th, 2014 at 11:56 am
That headline made me laugh. Might want to reword it. haha
October 27th, 2014 at 12:06 pm
Lets be honest about this situation. If its an o line problem then its a Licht/Lovie problem…as they were the ones that dismantled a pretty good run blocking oline…piss poor from the top down.
October 27th, 2014 at 12:24 pm
Yea yea the offensive line is bad but so is captain chechdown. Tampa is pathetic your gonna blame the line for 27 yards passing against the Vikings in the first half, I bet you idiots think v jacks for blanketed and shut down don’t you? Is someone actually trying to say this guy had to run for his life? Teddy bridgewater gets sacked more and his line is worse you psychos sorry to tell you but stop it Glennon isn’t number one in the league at throwing under pressure. Wanna use that excuse two weeks ago fine but this was not the ravens out there and he had more than enough time on alot of his throw. He’s a boring ass garbage quarterback and if all we can get is checkdowns all day give me mccown, I’d rather be pissed and entertained than bored to death for three hours. 5 straight three and outs and your blaming everyone but the guy under center. The exact opposite of mccown, I don’t get some of you clowns and most of you were nowhere to be found during the game because he’s done and I can’t wait for mgm to be run out of town. You must be a bunch of Damn tewbow fans
October 27th, 2014 at 12:51 pm
Nice headline, Joe.
October 27th, 2014 at 12:53 pm
I hope the pats do get martin then we will see how good he really is with a real head coach and a better off line
October 27th, 2014 at 1:02 pm
Joe, you guys could have consulted me if you needed something to say under the picture… it would go something like this
3 over paid idiots….and 1 has been.
Now keep losing losers and bring me the boy wonder Famous Jameis to Tampa…So you can lock me up for tickets next season.
Do the RIGHT thing by us fans!
October 27th, 2014 at 1:15 pm
i agree with justin….he is spot on. but unfortunately the bucs problem is much bigger than that. i agree with joebucs 100% on his live postgame interview, its the coaching.
October 28th, 2014 at 6:59 am
I like smith and dobson but wish we still had zuttah and joseph. Glad penn is gone
