The Simmering Switch To Mike Glennon

September 15th, 2014

GlennonjagsHumor Joe and take the names off the backs of the Bucs quarterbacks jerseys for a minute.

The veteran, No. 12, is a 35-year-old who has never started a full and successful NFL season. And he’s making dumb mistakes leading his 0-2 football team.

On the bench is a 24-year-old QB who Tampa Bay bosses insist is the “quarterback of the future.”

If the Bucs and the veteran can’t pull off an upset in Atlanta on Thursday night, then what? What would be the point of continuing with the journeyman veteran after an 0-3 start, including three conference losses, and virtually no shot at the playoffs?

No, Joe doesn’t think Mike Glennon is a good NFL starting quarterback. But at some point, Glennon bad will be a lot more sensible than Josh McCown bad.

Whether that moment comes this week or not is unknown.

One thing Bucs general manager Jason Licht has said he learned during his years under Bill Belicheat in New England is to be unafraid to move on from a player; accept the loss and never look back.

It’s a wise philosophy.

Joe’s not ready to throw in the towel on McCown, but the thought is simmering in Joe’s mind. Joe suspects it’s simmering at One Buc Palace, as well. McCown is not playing like the quarterback he was in Chicago last season, and it’s clear Lovie Smith has lost confidence in him.

That combination, if it continues, will not last a full season.

  1. Walter Says:

When we lose on Thursday night in embarrassing fashion on prime time television, Lovie will be forced to bench McCown. There won’t be any point in playing an older vet when we have a younger guy with promise waiting in the wings. Besides, I’m sure Glennon is chomping at the bit to get in the game.

  2. meh Says:

Switching from one backup qb to another backup qb is irrelevant. The problem is poor team building and a coach who doesn’t know how to run an offense or manage the clock.

  3. Robert7 Says:

It’s the only thing that will keep me watching if mcclown loses another one

  4. Bobby M. Says:

McCown is simply showing why he’s been a back up for 12 yrs….Practice superstar, game time dud.

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Not ready to dump McCown yet…..I saw what I thought was poor playcalling & clock management.
We moved into the red zone 5 times and only came away with 17…..McCown has some mobility…but made poor decisions thus far.

If you could take McCown’s mobility and combine them with Glennon’s decision making….you might have something.

I say, lets give it one or two more games…..12 games is enough for Glennon to proove himself.

Also, I’d like to see us blitz more often.

  6. Thebucssuck14 Says:

Josh McCown did not lose the game for us. Did he make some bonehead throws under stress that should have been picked off, yes. But big goofy Glennon would NOT have scored either touchdown with his lanky legs. If you watched the game and want to blame someone for the loss the blame the entire defense who couldn’t stop anything or anyone. The run, wide open holes and don’t get started on the wide open middle of the field. 3rd string QB no less. We suck!!

  7. bucrightoff Says:

McCown was a fluke in Chicago and most people knew it last year. Acting like that was going to continue was foolish, that was Josh’s ultimate irrational confidence run. He’s simply reverted to what he always was, the guy Lovie once cut for Jason Campbell. That line alone should get Lovie banned from ever being involved in the offense.

  8. BucBob1 Says:

Injury bug + inexperienced depth + non confident quarterback= Disaster!

  9. BucsQcCity Says:

I thought the goal of signing McCown was to get a veteran who could avoid bonehead plays and manage the game. Right now It’s not what we are seeing..

The oline seems improved, maybe it will be time to let the Cannon loose.

    This is a rebuilding year.

  10. NJBucsFan Says:

I’m not a MGM member, but I never believed McCown was the answer. A cheeta can’t change it’s spots. We should of never allowed the wool to be pulled over our eyes. McCown should be benched now. This wil allow analyst of Glennon. All we are doing is elongating the pain of having QB issues if we do not understand who these players are.

  11. Kevin1 Says:

I’m not even angry or mad. Kind of expected this to happen.

I honestly feel bad for this orginazation.

They just can’t figure it out.

  12. RichBucsfan Says:

It doesn’t matter who the qb is … unless the coaching philosophy is solid you don’t have a team worth a flip … this teams lacks an o-line, a d-line (except for McCoy and now he’s hurt), corners (Banks is horrible that is why the opposition exploits him), special teams, and most of all a coach (can you believe he said he didn’t want to put points on the board? OMG, points win the game and we LOST) washing my hands of this regime, worse than Schiano, worse than Morris

  13. buc4lyfe Says:

Lol Glennon will be josh mcclown in 12 years but it really doesn’t matter because the way this offense played is embarrassing. Where is all this the speed in space we heard about in the off season? Apparently their best offensive weapon was gonna be Chris sims

  14. Warren Says:

Poor play calling doomed us not McCown in this case (except for the early INT that killed a good drive but otherwise didn’t cost us). Overall McCown had a pretty good game so this isn’t the one we should be calling for his head over I think.

  15. BirdDoggers Says:

McCown was never the the answer at QB to begin with. He is a one year stop gap at best. With all the talk from the organization wanting to compete and win now, it never made sense to anoint a journeyman the starting job. Lovie might not have learned anything from his time in Chicago.

  16. James Says:

    It’s the Chucky Curse

  17. phil Says:

Didn’t like the Lovie Smith hire when it happen and I like it even less now. McCown is terrible and he always been terrible. First we lose to a second string quarterback and now we lose to a third string quarterback. What is it going to look light when we face Matt Ryan, Big Ben, & Dree Brees?

  18. Legarrettes Blunt Says:

the bottom line is that every single bucs reporter who watched training camp said that McCown was a clear cut better quarterback than Glennon. That being said I think our team just has two below average quarterbacks. Which stinks to say because that is the most important position on the field. We have the worst quarterback situation in our division, so we will end up being the worst team in our division. It’s as simple as that. Don’t know why L&L put so much faith into McCown. I’m not going to lie I was very optimistic coming into this season but it now seems to me like they made multiple judgement errors. Including letting Zuttah, Larsen and Joseph go to other teams and play well when our o line is shaky at best.

  19. HotRod Says:

The decision to try and throw that ball across his body was atrocious, most high school QBs know not to try that. And luckily Herron made a spectacular catch or he could of had another bonehead play. Honestly he looks ok most of the game, you have to love his mobility but we will continue to lose if they can’t get him to stop forcing the ball and turning it over when he doesn’t have anything – throw it away and try again.

  20. HotRod Says:

@Warren: Poor play calling doomed us not McCown in this case (except for the early INT that killed a good drive but otherwise didn’t cost us)

What?! We lost by 2, INT happened in the red zone, that should have been at least a FG. Turnovers always cost you.

  21. iamkingsu Says:

He is who he is. Joe don’t start this BS now all off season you raved about Josh while never
factoring in the fact that he was going up against our defense everyday. Please don’t fabricate stuff. Joe wrote numerous times about how expecting strong quarterback play from McCown for a full season was asking for a miracle, and Joe repeatedly talked about the challenges of having the fourth best QB in the division.–Joe

He’s horrible! Everyone know it shouldve been Glennon from the jump. If he’s the qb of the future(which I’m not sure if he is) you have to start him since he started last year.

  22. BucFanForever Says:

I say switch to Glennon. Actually, wait, no; switch to Kafka. The further down the depth chart, the better the qb seems to play in Buc games. Just imagine how badly the bucs would have been lit up if Case Keanum started.

  23. BucForce Says:

With a porous OL, and Glennon having less mobility than McClown, it won’t matter who is behind center. Defense is missing 3 starters on the DL, and couldn’t stop a 3rd string QB from marching down the field for the winning FG. This is Schiano bad football right now, and 0-8 is a definite possibilty again. The injuries have exposed the lack of depth at certain positions.

  24. iamkingsu Says:

But of Lovie is going to be to stubborn to make the switch and lose his team along the way and lose hie team like coaches do every year. If glennon was starting we would be 2-0 not because he’s better than josh but because he won’t turn the ball over!

  25. Bill T Says:

Lovie had the mentality that they had to win now. He didn’t think enough of Glennon but worse than that, he thought McCown is the answer. Have to ask why Lovie felt that way, when many other GMs never gave McCown the same cred.
What they should have done (and still do) is find out NOW if Glennon is the answer, because if they go 3-13 or 5-11 with Glennon on the bench, we still don’t know if Glennon is the QB of the future. Get him in there with another year of experience. If he’s great, then that’s what we want. If not, have to draft a QB like Mariotta or Hundley and either Glennon OR McCown can be the real backup

  26. RealityCheck Says:

Exactly HotRod! I’m amazed at the people that said McCown had a “good game”. How low are your expectations?

  27. iamkingsu Says:

Why do you’ll keep talking bout the damn O Line as the factor of why glennon won’t thrive? The damn O line is not forcing josh to make these pop warner turnovers. Hes trying to show us that he’s the career journeyman and not the guy that threw 13-3 last year so why won’t we just let him?

  28. Tom Edrington Says:

The sad fact is that neither McCown nor Glennon can be the guy to resurrect this franchise that has fallen into the NFL scrap pile.

Right now, there are simply too many players hurt.

I thought it ironic that Joe had a post talking about how Mike Evans spoke of the hits being harder in the NFL and that final lick on him left him down and the Bucs subject to the 10-second runoff.

Sad ending and after two games, even more injuries, they may not be able to field a team by week 12.

  29. RealityCheck Says:

McCown also made at least 2 throws on deep crossing routes while falling backward and getting pressured. He just threw it up for grabs. Both should have been intercepted. You can’t fix this kind of decision making, it’s instinctual.

  30. Bill T Says:

Offensive Line? They play pretty damn good yesterday. Big holes for Rainey. That interception was 100% on McCown. It was 1st down for crying out loud…throw the damn ball in the stands

  31. clafollett Says:

I agree with Warren. McCown did loose that game. He was pretty accurate most of the night. Coaching, the D and special teams lost this game. A blocked punt and filed goal? It’s bad enough to have one of them but two in one game? “Turrible”

    Is the draft here yet?

  32. Chef Paul Says:

If McCown would just quit forcing throws, he’d be alright. But too many forces. Too many throws while in the air with no balance.

I agree with TBBF. I’m OK giving him another game or two, but if he keeps forcing throws, they have to yank him. That’s unacceptable at his age.

  33. OB Says:

    Joe

Regardless of what we think of McCown, it is obvious the coaches don’t trust him. We get to the red zone by Rainey’s runs and some passes and then not one pass? Is it because he can’t think under pressure or he continually dumps passes for less than five yards?

Time management was also a problem. I am sure Lovie would love to have the time the first play of the second quarter back into the first quarter as he had a choice on the penalty at the end of the first quarter for more time at the end of the second half. But you never know until it is time if you made the right decision or not, but to me an attacking team wants more time to attack, a defensive team wants less time to defend.

With three Pro Bowlers on the team, we can’t seem to stop the pass any where in the middle of the field, why?

We are not lost, we just need to regroup and as a famous man once said, “Attack in all directions”

    What say you Joes?

  34. iamkingsu Says:

@Realitycheck Bingo! We see eye to eye lol. They r not nfl caliber qb decisions he be making. We should base lovie’s job stability on how fast he pulls McCown because if he can’t see this then he doesn’t need to be a NFL head coach

  35. JBuc Says:

Other than the pick he threw which was obviously a bad mistake, I thought he played well. He moved the team and made some good throws. I watched Drew Brees and Aaron Rogers make some bone headed throws yesterday as well. Josh was not the reason they last this game.

  36. RastaMon Says:

There are BIGGER problems than QB…use McClown up….save Glennon
    Leeman Smith

  37. johnnytheMOON Says:

Glennon Haters need to understand ..Glennon may not be a long term answer but i know Mccown is not the answer ..after watching Mccown i would rather see Kafka or any young qb …geezz how did everybody know mccown stinks but the coaching staff .

  38. iamkingsu Says:

@jbuc what about the bonehead throws last week? You don’t see the trend? Its instinctual

  39. lightningbuc Says:

Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers in the same breath as McCown? Seriously? Yes, all QBs make a bad decision once in a while. But the good and great ones more than make up for it with good play over the rest of the game. McCown – not so much.

  40. RickV Says:

McCown has made a bunch of bonehead plays but the play calling is what lost the game for us yesterday. That and the fact that we can’t cover anyone on defense. Getting beat routinely by Austin Pettis, are you kidding me!!!!!

  41. PRBucFan Says:

We didn’t lose this game because of McCown.

    Plain and simple.

  42. Barry Says:

Mike Glennon = Bucs 2-0. McCown shouldn’t see an other minute on the field as a starter. Media in this town have backed a lot of wrong horses, including Joseph. They and the Glazers need to stop living in the past. Note to Jason Licht, you are Lovie Smith’s boss. Not his equal. Don’t let Smith take you down. You have lost to a 2nd and 3rd string QBs. Think about that. So far Smith is ruining the careers of Glennon, Martin, VJax, and Evans. Didn’t we used to have a clutch kicker ? I wonder what happened to him? Hummmm. Yes Sir mister Licht, you best take decision making away from Smith before it’s too late. And for the Glazers I’ll speak the language they understand, Smith equals Blackouts.

  43. RealityCheck Says:

Comments – Except for that crucial interception in the redzone, McCown played exceedingly average. We lost by 2 points, but he didn’t lose the game for the Bucs.

What I hear – Except for the cancer, that guys pretty healthy. Cancer’s not the reason that guy’s gonna die.

Josh McCown is 1 reason the Bucs lost yesterday. There is no way around that. They also lost because their defense sucks, their special teams sucks, and their conservative coaching sucks. The collective sucking of the rest of the team does not make McCown suck any less.

I don’t see the point of this McCown experiment. He’s not the future and he’s not the present. I’d rather watch Glennon be terrible based on inexperience than McCown be terrible based on experience.

  44. Dewey Selmon Says:

I said it when the schedule came out. McCown in on a 6 game tryout until the bye week. Tressman made Josh and the tutor is gone.

  45. Greg Says:

I was at the game and have to say that if this coach keeps his job then there will be no one in the stands in a couple more games.
There were some irate fans after this game and I don’t blame them.
This coach is embarrassing and will never be the answer.
    Fire him now
    Lovie = Fail

  46. billy buckaroo Says:

If Glennon had started the first two games we would still be 0-2
    The team is not ready.
L&L personnel handling and delays in getting the players picked by the time the season started is the cause for most of this.
Add injuries to players and coaches makes it worse.
The team looked horribly un-enthused last year and played like it.
They looked enthused this year first game but thats about it
They looked better this week than last week and most of last year

When the season started all the other teams had their players used to each other and had been practicing plays together and were ready for the season to start. Not the case for the bucs.
L&L didnt get things done and ready for the season in time and it is showing on the field.
Add a little bad luck on top of all this doesnt help either.
It will likely be about 3-5 weeks more before we can tell what type of team we even have because we started behind before the season even started.
The players are doing very well for learning “on the fly” and trying very hard, backups and new players included

The season started and the coaches were not ready
Hence the players were not ready
The rest of the league got a 4-5 week head start and we are 0-2
Not too surprising but the future holds enthusiasm with what I see.

  47. bucrightoff Says:

Whether we won or lost with McCown is irrelevant. He’s 35 and contrary to what some here hoped, he’s not Rich Gannon part 2. He’s who everyone thought he was, a backup who had a great, unsustainable run in a wonderful offensive system, nothing more and nothing less. Those who say they’ve figured out Glennon after 13 games are crazy, he needs more reps to see what he is. The people who hate him need to accept that fact, playing him benefits the Bucs long term much more than McCown.

The choice is obvious, there’s nothing to learn playing McCown and everything to learn playing Glennon. Start McCown Thursday and then give Glennon the 10 days to take over after that. At 0-3 the season is essentially lost so might as well forget trying to turn McCown into anything other than what he is and see what Glennon could be.

  48. Hawk Says:

    Warren Says:
“Poor play calling doomed us not McCown in this case (except for the early INT that killed a good drive but otherwise didn’t cost us).”

Did you really say that? DIDN’T COST US? The Bucs were inside the Rams 10 yard line. If McCown hadn’t thrown that ‘insignificant’ interception, the Bucs could have come away with (at least) a field goal. And let’s see what impact would 3 more points have made on this game…Oh Yea, a win.
Come on, Warren. We are getting exactly what we should have expected out of McCown.
That being said, I’m still not ready to change QBs.

  49. RealityCheck Says:

    @bucrightoff – exactly how I feel.

  50. Architek Says:

This is still a very bad football team.

  51. Greg Says:

Play calling and game management cost us this game.
I understand the Josh McCown is not the best option at QB but if your inside the 10 yard line and call 3 running plays as if you are just playing for the field goal then you have to say the coaching staff has no confidence in there QB or they are just plain stupid
    Lovie = fail.

  52. swaggy64 Says:

I expected the offense to struggle no matter who the starting qb is. We just installed a new system from an offensive coordinator who has never coached in the NFL before while facing two of the league’s best front sevens, while starting an offensive line that is just beginning to get acquainted. Anybody that expected precision execution this soon was naïve. My biggest worry is the lack of playmaking on defense. It’s supposed to be Lovie’s calling card and we only have 1 takeaway and 3 sacks in two games. We need outside pressure and db’s who are ball hawks. If they don’t develop, even if our offense improves, they’ll be playing catch-up every week. It’s already starting to feel like “wait ’til next year” time.

  53. JBuc Says:

The two touchdowns we did score were the result of McCown running the ball. One was a designed play. That option is off the table with Glennon. However, I will agree that if we 0-6 or 1-5 heading into the bye then a move should be made just to see what we have.

Again, the reason the game was lost was because the defense can’t get off the field and apparently our special teams need to back to the drawing board.

  54. Jim Says:

Let Glennon play! At least it will show L&L that Glennon is NOT the qb of the future. Otherwise the Bucs will be losing for the next 5 years.

  55. Harry Says:

Like TBBF said, except for the one very costly INT in the red zone, I thought McCown played well. But I have to agree with Joe, if we lose Thursday, at some point after that we may as well see more of The Cannon.

  56. Mike Glennon Mob Says:

No, Joe doesn’t think Mike Glennon is a good NFL starting quarterback.

You’re wrong, Joe. Mike Glennon threw for 19-9 over 12 games behind a terrible offensive line…a line that is actually worse than this year’s line. Average that out to a full season and you’re looking at about 25 TD to 12 INT. That by very definition is elite level QB play.

If you compare Glennon’s statistics to, say, RGIII you would see that Glennon had a better year than RGIII. Yes, we would rather have Glennon over RGIII. There, we said it!

We said it on our Twitter page yesterday that if #12 plays like #2 it’ll be time to put in #8.

  57. FrankPillow Says:

It really doesn’t matter who the QB is at this point…I fear the result will be the same. That’s a terrible indictment on the state of this team only two weeks into the season. Equally terrible is the fact that Lovie and staff (lumping in Arroyo and Tedford here) displayed unequaled cowardice yesterday. The clock management and uber-conservative play-calling harken back to the darkest of the Dilfer days.

The difference here is that Lovie’s D is complete and total garbage compared to what Dungy had back in that era. Our D, today, is just as bad as the O. We have no DEs, a hurt UT, two marginal LBs and one stud who looks lost in this system and perhaps the least instinctive, slowest two starting S in the NFL. Barron, in particular is a complete and total dud (playing very Sabby-esque). Don’t get me started on the rest of the DBs, who can’t play man or zone right now.

This roster is so completely devoid of REAL playmakers that it’s a wonder if we win 5 games this year. By playmakers, I’m talking about the kind of player that makes his cohorts better. Ups everyone’s game. Name that person on this roster? It isn’t David or McCoy. It isn’t V-Jax. They’re all fine players, but they’re NOT stars. No, we’ve missed out on countless players of that caliber for well over a decade. The cupboard is far more bare than anyone cares to admit.

So, why not gamble? Why not throw inside the red zone? Why not a hard count or creative blizting? Anything, something, to try and offset our deficiences? How about we start playing to win?

The blocked FG was football karma at its finest- where we played not to lose and we lost out on points in that sequence anyway. We deserved the outcome.

  58. Nic Says:

Glennon’s gotta go in. The defense has proven that it will not be the deciding factor in games for us, so we may as well see what the kid has learned between year one and year two. McCown is a capable backup and is still getting paid handsomely. Glennon gets us 5 or 6 wins, McCown and we could be looking at 0, 1, 2 wins at the most and a 1st overall pick that we more than likely won’t use on a QB.

What I want to know is what exactly did Lovie “learn” during his year off? It doesn’t look like much. Still seems stubborn as a mule.

  59. Bobby Says:

All I know is that I’m over the McCown experiment. The DNA is in him to be stupid. It’s just who he is. He’s reckless and it cost us in two games now. I’m not sure what we have in Glennon but I’m ready to find out. Glennon isn’t as mobile but he’s a hell of a lot smarter and he has some mobility. Plus he’s tall enough to see our three 6’5 receivers running down the field. and he can make the throws. If I don’t see a change soon I’m done watching for the year. It’s just frustrating and I have better things to do than watch the product that’s been on the field the last two Sundays.

  60. clafollett Says:

I got to agree with PRBucFan. McCown didn’t help himself with that early INT but he did NOT loose that game for us. There were serious and consistent breakdowns on our D and those two blocked kicks really hurt. Our D made Davis look like Drew Brees.

Wasn’t the D the only area Joe wasn’t concerned about. Hell, I think we were all pretty confident the D would be top 5 or 10 this year.

Curse of the Backups. I sure hope we don’t play any from here on out.

  61. sho nuff Says:

…the poodles worst nightmare is that kid being good…but then again he could always do the golf tournament and get a lifetime pass…see Clayton and Freeman

  62. ToesOnTheLine Says:

    @ BucForce

“This is Schiano bad football right now”

No my fellow Buc fan this is far worse than Schiano’s team. I know the Schiano haters loathe admitting it, but compare the preseason and first two contests the Bucs have dropped and any rational person would say so far as a Buccaneers HC Schiano is/was better than Lovie. As painful as that may be for some to admit, it is what it is folks

  63. Aaron Says:

Let’s wait till the bye-week – I’m not a Glennon fan but if we are 1 – 5 and JM keeps making bad decisions we might as well see what Glennon can do…Deep down I think we all knew Lovie and crue would need some time to get the right players (starters and backups) to play this system. What is he supposed to say…”I think we are going to be 5 – 11 but hang in there…”

My main concern is the o-line. Lovie stuggled with O-line play in Chicago and so did our GM with the Cards.

We are on the right path…just going to take some time.

  64. The_Buc_Realist Says:

Has Josh Meltdown had a scoring drive that did not have a penalty to keep it alive???

  65. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Okay, here are my thoughts on the topic, if anyone cares.

When the Buccaneers were rumored to be going after McCown, this is what I said

    BuccaneerBonzai Says
“Worse signing if it happens. Should have waited for someone better.

Let’s say he does start. Where does that leave us when he decides to retire next year?

    Plus McCown is ALL HYPE.”
    https://www.joebucsfan.com/?p=108818#comment-3376943

So you see, contrary to what you all seem to think, I am not a Josh McCown “man”. Once he was signed, I had no choice but to back him, because I won’t root against any Buccaneers starters doing well. I would rather be wrong than let that happen.

The truth is, I understand all the fans wanting Glennon to start. The only problem is, I do not think they are thinking it thru. Consider the injuries, the offensive line, the under performing defense and the lack of our offensive coordinator.

There is simply no way Mike Glennon can win under these conditions, and knowing Tampa fans, they will turn on him in a heartbeat.

While I admit I am not 100% sold on Mike Glennon as a franchise QB, I have never said it is not possible. I have only said that he needs to prove it before I call him one.

Kind of like those of you who claimed the bucs would go 11-5 this year (or 7-9 or 5-11). I don’t give credit, good or bad, until it is earned.

So the question becomes, can Mike Glennon earn it? Well, there is the crutch. If he is made starter, I want him to have a fair chance of succeeding. I WANT him to win. Given the state of this team, with all the injuries (from players to coaches), I do not think he would be given that fair chance.

It would be setting him up for failure.

And, let me add, even if he does get moved up as starter, it doesn’t mean I am rooting against him if I point out faults. If I say he is getting rattled under pressure, someone will likely say my bias is showing. That’s not bias. It is fact. It is me saying “This is an area he needs to address”.

So, to sum it all up, I am not in favor of benching McCown.

  66. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

What the heck? A security check to post now?

  67. Phillip Says:

Since when is 25 TD to 12 INT elite? lmao I wonder what you call Peyton and Brees’ stats year after year??? You need to hand that name over to someone else because you are just making a fool out of the whole group of MGM members… This team needs to hire an OFFENSIVE HC (Darrell Bevell, Adam Gase, Joe Lombardi, Aaron Kromer, Bill Davis, Dirk Koetter someone).. I’m sorry but I’ve been preaching this since BEFORE Schiano was HIRED… The rules have changed where if you fart on a player too hard it’s a flag and this nostalgia act isn’t working…

I’m not ready to go all fire Lovie like some insane people on here… Since the last thing we need is to be doing is paying ANOTHER coach who is no longer coaching us… Also who the hell would want to coach here if we continuously fire Coaches after a season or two (Schiano deserved it, I’ll admit that)?

Why hire Marcos Arroyo to be the QB coach and not let him call plays when our OC is out with a health condition? He’s young and inexperienced at the NFL level?? Well our OC is also inexperienced at calling plays in the NFL as well? The kid called plays for our CURRENT OC at CAL?!?!

Lastly… When the hell has a Lovie Smith defense looked soooooooooooooo damn soft? We just had AUSTIN F*****G DAVIS who had NEVER started a regular season NFL game EVER go 22-29 I believe and over 230 yards?!?!?!?! This loss isn’t on anyone except for the Glazers, Licht, Lovie, and the rest of that EXPERIENCED(joke) Coaching staff.

  68. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Tedford did not call the plays yesterday. Marcos Arroyo did. Again. And he lost. Again.

But to be fair, sta least this game was closer. Really, certain areas of play WERE improved. It’s just that the bad areas shined so brightly that it is hard to see the good.

And the way the game ended…man…there needs to be an NFL rule that a 10 second run off cannot end a game. There should at least be one more play.

  69. bucrightoff Says:

Bonzai clearly forgets Lovie is far too loyal to his guys (“Rex is my QB”, Urlacher playing past best before etc…) and that Glennon never had a fair chance of winning any competititon. The people saying keep McCown are the people advocating continued mediocrity.

  70. gotbbucs Says:

McCown is Lovie’s hand picked QB. If you think they’re benching him anytime soon you’re kidding yourself. They give him at least half the season, especially considering Tedford hasn’t called a play yet. It’s another lost year for the Bucs unfortunately. In the day and age of free agency and fast turnarounds, what the Bucs have managed to put on the field in the last six years is absolutely mind numbing.

  71. bucsnutt Says:

I truly believe that when Licht said they had a quarterback in mind for the draft, someone we wouldn’t expect, he was referring to Bortles. They thought he would still be there because all you heard about was Carr, Manziel, and Bridgewater. I believe they were confident he’d be there when we picked. I think we got caught with our knickers at the dip. Don’t get me wrong, I believe Evans is a helluva pick, just not the guy they were eyeing originally at #7. I’ll freely admit that I’m a fan of Glennon and feel that or best chance of success moving forward is with #8 behind center, but I think the miss on Bortles really had the team a bit flustered. Adapt and overcome.

  72. Buccfan37 Says:

If Glennon is the QB of the future then the future is now and from here on out. The pass game is most important. Lovie is just a stick in the mud. Glennon is a better passer than the Josher, hands down. I want to see Glennon play against the Falcons and Steelers, not that old flustered fart McCown. And yes Schiano is a better coach than Lovie Smithereens.

  73. Justin Says:

I was against signing McCown from the beginning…Good to see I was right. If the Bucs want to “win now,” a 30-something career back up isn’t the answer. That’s not opinion, that’s a fact…Also we might need to stop referring to Tedford as a “guru,” because offensively the last two games were not very impressive to say the lease. Granted it’s only been 2 games into his career, it’s not the best way to begin the season.

  74. Warthog Says:

Put Glennon in. There’s no point in a 35 year old who can’t play smart and protect the ball. The worst case scenario now is that we go into the 2015 draft NOT knowing if Glennon can lift his game. That could lead to Licht doing something crazy like passing on a real qb talent. See what we have in Glennon.

  75. Brent Says:

He had 1 turnover behind a mediocre o-line. I think he was 16-21 with 8.3 yards per pass. Ran for a td. Not bad?? Nobody thought he was answer anyway. I’m praying for Winston or mariotta next year. That loss was on defense and special teams. If they convert a a freaking 25 yard fg we probably win. Oh yeah how does are vaunted defense allow a scrub qb to move up and down the field at will. And we’re worried about stop gap mcnown??

  76. Phillip Says:

    @Bonzai

I’d love a source or a link that says Arroyo was calling plays fully by himself… I have a hard time believing that he would have such a vanilla game-plan against the the Rams. Seems to me and mostly everyone it was Lovie who had a big say in what plays were called or what the game-plan was going to be.

  77. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

We will soon be 0 and 3 before this week is over.
It sucks to be a Bucs Fan right now.

  78. AnotherJ Says:

Marcus Arroyo, and his inexperience calling offense helped cost us the game day.
Leaving Bowers in as a pass rusher also didn’t help our cause!

  79. Bobby Says:

My point is that if they really are believing that Glennon is the ‘QB of the future’ then they had better be finding out if they are correct in their expectations. He can’t be any worse than McCown.

  80. d-money Says:

It doesn’t matter which QB is playing if all they are going to do is hand the ball off.

  81. Bogiedr Says:

Can we wait and see what happens when Tedford gets back? And please don’t start with your crystal ball telling us why it will be bad, you have not seen it, remember? If you thought more than five wins was possible year one …

  82. crazy Says:

Luke needs to play within the system and stop trying to make something happen as the play breaks down. As bad as it was yesterday, Lovie’s lack of confidence in the offense wouldn’t have led to a better result with a QB he trusts even less.

  83. Barry Says:

If Media including Joseph wouldn’t have run Schiano off and would have given him a fair chance the Bucs would be 2-0. Shame on the baby Glazers. Start Glennon Thursday and if he can steal a win then who knows. For those who lobbied to the Glazers to fire Gruden and Schiano I hope your pain is great. But all’s not lost. Let’s root for 8-8 and give Smith fair time (4 years). Unlike what you gave Schiano.

  84. Mr. Mudge Says:

I don’t see how McCown is the biggest problem when your defense doesn’t intercept a 3rd string QB, lets him complete 75% of his passes, and lets the opponent drive down for the winning score in the last 2 minutes. For a team supposedly built around defense, this is a game lost by the defense.

  85. iamkingsu Says:

Joe fabricating what lolol?? When you useto breakdown your training camp notes you useto rave about how sharp he was doing practice etc etc. And how much better than Glennon he was (you and Casillas lol). But you never factor in the fact that he was throwing against our defense and the fact that our defense has more of a familiarity with glennon than McCown

  86. Pierce Says:

I say week 5 for Glennon if McCown continues this way. Then we can see if Glennon is worth anything and if not, draft a QB next year

  87. Sapp, STFU Says:

Never been in teh MGM. Don’t know if he really is ours, or anyone’s, QB of the future. But what I have seen from McCown in the first two games has me seriously thinking that we can’t do much worse.

We should consider what teh best option is for us to do well in the long run. If MG was a rookie, I’d be reluctant to start him. But he has many starts from last year and could be an instant improvement.

  88. Abuc40 Says:

Eh, what the hell, just start the younger quarterback already so we can see what we need to address in the draft, i.e quarterback,
because it looks like a top 5 pick next year. Lovie talks a good game but don’t back it up. We draft all offensive players in the draft and yet cannot put up 20 points per game. Three players over 6’5” and we cant get the ball to them. Our offense is offensive to say the least. Atlanta don’t have a sack this year as of yet, but that will change Thursday. McClown looks like a deer in headlights. Mike Glennon cannot throw a deep ball to save his life but the short to immediate routes are decent. That will keep us in 3rd and manageable situations and keep our defense off the field. Our defense is shot! We need Tampa 2.14 as in 2014 defense not Tampa 2.0 and in the year 2000. The nfl has changed and Lovie got stuck in his time travel machine playing football like it’s 1999! If you don’t experiment with what you have then you don’t know how to fix it. Time to shake this up!

  89. james west Says:

bad coaching bad QB play bad defense bad bad bad bad bad every damn year sick of this bull shit put glennon in hope for the best make tedford intrim coach if healthy enough and draft a franchise QB I personally like Bryce petty 6’3 235 accurate and deceivingly mobile with a rocket arm look up his stats and bio would take him over crabby lightfingers any day ! but hey they probably won’t so buckle up get plenty of alcohol and enjoy the LSD

  90. Starting to really miss Schiano Says:

Glennon should have started the season. Not too late still can save season with better QB play. Heck, even Madden football has Glennon as clear cut starter by 7 overall value ranking points. How can Lovie not see that McCown is backup for life.

  91. Trubucfan22 Says:

If the bucs give up on McCown, they are giving up on the season. Glennon is a worse QB than McCown. Plain and simple. Glennon showed his incompetence last season. Playing Glennon will only gauge to see if we have our back up of the future. Glennon is nothing more than a back up. He was terrible in clutch spots last season. Not someone I’m even interested in seeing take the field. If he’s on the field then the coaching staff is giving up on the season. And if they give up, then why shouldn’t the fans, or players. It’s a slippery slope when you start admitting defeat just 2 or 3 weeks into the season.
