Stats Say Mike Glennon Is Your QB

Numbers suggest Mike Glennon is a much better quarterback to run the "Dunkaneers" offense than Josh McCown.

Numbers suggest Mike Glennon is a much better quarterback to run the “Dunkaneers” offense than Josh McCown.

Yes, Joe knows there may be too much praise for Bucs quarterback Mike Glennon after he led a come-from-behind win at Pittsburgh on Sunday. Wins, especially dramatic wins, tend to hide warts.

Then, here come the numbers geeks, among them Rivers McCown (not to be confused with Josh McCown) of FootballOutsiders.com.

McCown noted how the Bucs were supposed to be all about the “Dunkaneers. Throw the ball high and long and let the tall Bucs receivers go get it. We didn’t see that until the win over Pittsburgh.

McCown explains why the Dunkaneers offense was not unleashed until Sunday.

* Josh McCown, through Week 3, on balls 16 yards beyond the line of scrimmage or longer: 4-of-12, 108 yards.

* Mike Glennon, Week 4, on those same deep balls: 6-of-11, 167 yards.

It turns out that a jump ball offense works better when you have a quarterback with one of the best deep balls in the NFL rather than a journeyman who had magic interception-free dust sprinkled on his 2013 season. Who knew?

But yes, Glennon’s entrance will tilt the game plan back to the way it should’ve been all along.

Joe sees the light. The Bucs did not run the Dunkaneers offense because, well, Josh McCown couldn’t pull it off, not even factoring in his ghastly concept of ball security.

With Glennon at the helm, the Dunkaneers offense not only can be used, but the team can win with it. Rejoice, you Mike Glennon Mobsters.

In all fairness We’ll have to give Marcus Arroyo credit for letting Glennon sling the ball to his receivers…
Glennon clearly showed he is more than capable of running an offense, and He’ll only get better with experience unlike Josh McCown!

  2. 19 - 9 Says:

    Yes

  3. Luther Says:

Thanks for this post Joe. I will be listening to you today as you ride on the Glennon Mob bandwagon.

  4. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

6 of 11 is still not good enough though. We so need a better performing QB.

  5. FanOfBucs Says:

Good stuff. Whoever helps us win…!

    Go Bucs!

  6. Hawk Says:

I am on record as being one of those who believe that the ceiling on Glennon is still a long way off. BUT, I’ve also stated that I would have liked to see him ‘watch’ McCown this year (assuming that McCown would play as well as Lovie led us to believe). Glennon was pushed into a tough spot last year. The fact that Glennon is once again ‘forced’ into a bad position is not a very good thing. Especially a QB. He is NOT going to save the day. He is NOT going to have come-from-behind wins every time the team is behind in the fourth Qtr. However, *IF* he continues to be the starter, we shall see a different QB at the end of this season, than we saw last year (and last year’s model wasn’t too shabby). The Bucs may still want to draft a QB next year, but I’m betting that IF they do, it’ll be on the second day.

  7. Buccfan37 Says:

Celebrate Glennon and the Mike Glennon Mob all at the same time. Now that’s worth two thumb’s up!!

  8. 1bucfan88 Says:

Bonzai, quite a few of those incompletions were drops by our butterfingered WR corps, if I’m not mistaken. I’ll take 6-11 all day in that scenario.

  9. Buc1987 Says:

    Stats….schmats. I have 2 eyes!

  10. biff barker Says:

The deep ball is effective when you can complete over 50% of attempts but I’m waiting to see more of the speed in space plays.

The game changing 40 yard completion to Louis Murphy is a prime example. Oh yeah, Glennon throws a better slant pass too.

  11. 1gr8buc Says:

1buc you are correct. Including Evans pulling his groin which lead to an int. This town will never be happy with anyone who is under center. No matter the name on the back of the jersey.

  12. Buccfan37 Says:

The Mike Glennon Mob, now that has a nice ring to it. A growing subset of The Buccaneer Mob of fans. Go Bucs Glennon Mob!

  13. OAR Says:

“6 of 11 is still not good enough though.”

How many of those other 5 passes were drops? If I remember correctly there were atleast two drops on those longer passes. Those percentages change, if the receivers catch those other passes. Funny how math works.

  14. Buc1987 Says:

1gr8buc …I was happy when they signed Br-ad Johnson. A much needed piece to the puzzle.

For me Glennon’s ceiling is Brad Johnson. I don’t know if that’s good enough for today’s game, but that’s what I’m seeing.

    A tall lanky Br-ad.

  15. Soggy Says:

Glennon Glennon He’s Our Man, If He Can’t Do It Were Doomed

  16. BucFanInArkansas Says:

“magic interception-free dust” explains everything we need to know about McCown v.2014.

    Also, 1 win > 3 losses.

  17. Buc1987 Says:

If I keep Jeopardy score. Glennon would have 1 and McClown (5 million dollar man)would have -3 and a long way to go to catch up to Mike.

Then again there’s the Saints game. (yikes)

  18. pick6 Says:

downfield jump balls are not naturally high percentage plays. 50%, while consistently throwing it where it can’t get picked off is probably a reasonable expectation of success on that type of throw. still, in the red zone it’s a great weapon because the jump ball can go to whichever of our 3 or 4 big bodies has the best matchup. they can’t just mug the TE like people have started to do to graham and gronk

  19. iamkingsu Says:

    @buccaneerBonzai
Lmao you’re really criticizing 6-11?? You must be outside your mind. Go look at Brady’s numbers when he throws the ball 10 yards from the LOS. I’ll save you the time he’s dead last. And we’re talking about 16 yards. 6-11 is damn good to start with

  20. BucFan20 Says:

And one of those was not a drop but one foot out of bounds by Evans. That was with ONE week with the first team full practice and game action. As he and the receivers get more time together timing will get better. Of course that is unless! Please NO Lovie, don’t even think of it!

  21. mpmalloy Says:

    Rejoice, you Mike Glennon Mobsters.

    YES General Joe, sir!

  22. Buck Rogers Says:

I hope Lovie Lets Glennon throw the ball a lot early in the game against the Saints. The run game is just not there. Glennon looked great when he was tearing it up in the 4th q. He was in rhythm! If the Bucs play Lovie ball, Brees will be up 2 to 3 TDs and will be screwed !!!!!

Saints last 20 games 1-10 on the road 9-0 at home

    Lovie NO CONSERVATIVE SH**!!!!!

  23. mark2001 Says:

Joe…think you are on the right side of this now…cautiously optimistic.

Was reading some old articles about how things went down at NC State. Both guys played in a pro type offense, both were roommates…both respected each others games, and were extremely successful. Wilson was asked to leave because his baseball interest affected his spring training participation, and because Glennon showed enough promise for his HC to ask Wilson to walk. Both are great guys, and Glennon obviously had something special as well. I’m really interested in seeing how much upside the guy really has. Do I wish he was more mobile? Sure…but I will only wish that as long as a guy like Wilson or Newton can stay healthy, while risking their well being on a somewhat regular basis scrambling with the ball. In the end he may be a little above average…or he might be great…only time will tell. But he deserves a good opportunity and our support until he proves he can’t be an excellent QB. That being said, I’m not saying that we shouldn’t draft another QB in the first three rounds next year. Think we should.

  24. iamkingsu Says:

What’s some of you’ll beef with Mike Glennon? It’s like you’ll can’t wait to criticize. The man hasn’t even played a full season worth of games yet. You even critcize him for being damn good. They call a deep ball a 50-50 ball for a reason lol but I’m not trying to turn this into a math class

  25. iamkingsu Says:

    @mark2001
No Russ was pushed out because Glennon was the number 1 qb in the country. They just used Russel’s baseball career as an excuse to push him out

  26. bucrightoff Says:

6/11 on deep balls is actually an incredible %. Most good QBs throw for about 40% or so on deep balls. Over 50%? Nice….

  27. lurker Says:

only one game, let us hope beyond hope he improves and doesn’t play his regular self.

now we really need to draft a qb this year since we passed on so much talent in the draft at the position last year for a teddy bear wr. love to see the stats to compare bridgewater, bortles, and carr at the end of the season with the bucs’ qbs.

  28. Joseph Mamma Says:

That laser Glennon threw to Lois Murphy, brad Johnson couldn’t throw if his life depended on it.

  29. lurker Says:

johnson was a great qb. glennon is not even close!

    don’t make stuff up.

  30. BUC4LIFE79 Says:

BuccaneerBonzai, 6 out of 11 (which is better than 50%) on throws that have at THE BEST, a 50/50 chance of even being caught?? AND THAT AIN’T GOOD ENOUGH FOR YOU?? WTF are you smoking??

  31. biff barker Says:

A fast start was the key to last weeks win.

This week, even more so in the dome. Agree, Lovie Ball won’t cut it… most likely, we’ll need 3 offensive touchdowns and a ST or defensive score.

One small benefit is that we will play another 3-4 defense so preparation should be much the same.

My biggest fear is our porous secondary getting waxed by another big TE. We’ve yet to contain a single one this season.

  32. mark2001 Says:

Iam…you could be right…my point was that he has talent, and that talent is worthy of an opportunity. Yes, he was a third round pick….but that doesn’t mean that he can’t become an excellent QB, and that he has earned an opportunity to prove that….and that all the naysayers would be better to be “cautiously optimistic” and reserve their strong doubts and criticisms for a time if and when deserved.

  33. billy buckaroo Says:

Saints are going to try and cut Glennons time down in pocket big time after watching the Pittsburg game. They are going to be coming hard.
Offense line is going to make the difference in the game

    we can win!

  34. rhenry Says:

This team and town seems to rally around Glennon, can’t say the same about McClown. As long as Glennon is playing, I will keep watching. If Dungy 2.2 starts McClown, I’ll be fishing. Simple as that.

    ———————–

Glennon’s major weaknesses are throwing 10-25 yards down the field and his inability to get rid of the ball/keep plays alive in the pocket. I’m the biggest Mike Glennon non-supporter here, but as far as those two weaknesses, they were his strengths on Sunday. The first half he looked like the Mike Glennon I came to know last season. Two yard checkdowns on 3rd and 10, taking needless sacks, but having a great TD to INT ratio (1:0) despite not making any great throws. That second half though, if that wasn’t an accident, he could be okay.

  36. Bucnjim Says:

Not many fans are going to like this, but the Bucs will HAVE to run the ball with success in order to beat the Saints in the Dome. There is no way you can keep giving Brees the ball and not get blown out. Clock management and key special teams play may give us a chance to walk out with a win.

  37. Bucnjim Says:

and of course the obvious fact that the D will need to at least show up this week.

  39. tmaxcon Says:

remember folks it takes more than the qb to make the “Dunkaneer” style of play work. Most notably has been the improvement of the offensive line. I am no McCown fan and I can’t stand the sight of 8 on the field so let’s not forget it’s a team game. When Glennon puts an ENTIRE game together and strings MULTIPLE wins together then and only then will I jump on the Glennon bandwagon. I will not ignorantly proclaim a backup the next coming of Joe Montana until he earns it. Again, let’s not get too excited until the TEAM has multiple wins. Pittsburgh shot themselves in the head with all the 15 yard penalties and were clearly hurt by their own set of injures. Remember when making excuses for Glennon the same excuses need to apply to the other team and other bucs players. And before the ignorant members of the mob attack me what Glennon did in 4th qtr was a nice job not taking a damn thing away from the boy but I am not about “good wins” nor moral victories or I Told you so’s… Winning playoff games and super-bowls that is all I care about and the bucs are not close yet.

I never thought I would see the game I saw last sunday, this year anyways. Maybe everybody will be fired up from now on, Heck maybe even lovie.. Bucs start bringing the big seal club to work.. Oh Ya.

  42. buccanAy Says:

Glennon’s ability to make ALL the NFL throws, will open up large areas of the field that were not open with McCown. Mainly, outside the numbers, where MG’s arm strength will not allow defenders to “shade” inside. Should open up running game, as safety’s will be on notice, that we CAN and WILL throw deep.

  43. Unislookgoodunislookugly Says:

Hogwash!! It amazes me how Joe pounds his keyboard on saying he doesn’t buy stats and especially stats from these guys. He even argues with the Big Dog about their true meaning. But low and behold .. Now the self appointed flip flopping QB backer is now relishing in stats that he never supported. And after Glennon tries to keep up with Brees on Sunday it will be amazing how fast people jump off the Glennon wagon. This town is full of more goobers than I thought.

  44. Buccfan37 Says:

Aint gonna be no jumping off the Glennon bandwagon for this Bucs fan. I’m on until he is gone from the Bucs, goober peanuts or bust. I predicted the win and said he would throw for at least 2 TD’s. That aint peanuts.

  45. bankie Says:

Any1 else Joe would like to anoint as leader of the mike Glennon mob? Considering u joined 2 weeks ago. I’ve been here for a few years just never commented but this whole “Joe now a general in the MGM” is ridicolous. You’re a grunt.

  46. SteveK Says:

Surely the haters will lessen and lessen. I love the fact that folks can’t give Glennon props. It’s like their minds are limited in regards to accepting potential.

  47. Bucfan4life Says:

Everyone is overreacting about Glennon after one good half of football. Other than an 8 yard TD drive in the first half he was less than pedestrian. He played very well in the 2nd half and showed real potential (I have never thought of Glennon as a franchise QB). Hopefully he stays in the lineup and by the end of the year we should have our answer. If he consistantly plays like he did in the 2nd half Sunday we may have our guy. However it’s a looong season and other than last week he has never carried the team on his back. It’s one game! I hope the scouts are still keeping their eyes on college QBs. Last year I saw a guy who did very little other than not throwing a lot of rookie style interceptions. Hopefully he keeps it up but it will take more than a game to convince me we should pass on one of the top 3 QBs in next year’s draft.

  48. Hawk Says:

It would be difficult to even dream that a QB with less than a season of starts, could keep up with a Pro Bowl veteran. So how could anyone be down on him, if he doesn’t do it?
Of course, no one EVER expected him to ‘finish off’ the Steelers… IN PITTSBURGH. Dreams sometimes come true, but I’m not going to be disappointed when they don’t. They’re just dreams.
However, I do agree with you, Unislookgoodunislookugly, that Joe seems to be allergic to stats until they fit his argument, and then they are the miracle medicine.

  49. ddneast Says:

LOL.just listened to Joe on the Borderline personality Disorder poster child’s show who ended up screaming at one of his fans when he told him he was now 0 for 2 on his Josh QB’s.
The guy simply went off the rails yelling at the guy that Freeman was a winner here.
Ahhhhh one winning season doesn’t make you a winner, Steve.
Here is an honest question. If Glennon had the same game he had against the Steelers against the Panthers and Billygoats, would the Bucs be 3-1, 2-2 or the same.
    You tell me.

Doesn’t it just figure that with both us and the Aints would be tied at 1 -3, us coming off an emotional win, and the Aints just being morally embarrassed, that we now have to travel to the 9th ward. It’s a Buc’s Life!

  52. Patrick in VA Says:

Glennon is doing just what I hoped he’d do. He’s print some good stuff on tape so he can go somewhere else where he has a legit chance at competing for a starting job.

  53. lurker Says:

    should be interesting comparison.

to me, most of those qb’s had better skills than glennon does. sad thing about stats is that they are meaning less out of context. the context being different teams.

stats that rely on others are not of the same context.

hey, i hope glennon keeps improving…i love wins. but from what i have seen, he is a weakness on this team and there were better qb’s in the draft.

glennon didn’t own the 2nd half. he did well on the last series, mostly. hell, the series before that he missed his targets with bad passes in the redzone. he hit a defender in the back on a pass most glennon lovers think is pass interference.

ddneast said…”If Glennon had the same game he had against the Steelers against the Panthers and Billygoats, would the Bucs be 3-1, 2-2 or the same.”
Fun question. Though it is impossible to say for sure, IMO the ‘stats’ seem to favor a 3-1 record. Both games were close and scores were ‘cost’ on QB turnovers. And who knows, if the Bucs had gone into Atlanta with a 2-0 record, it may not have been a blowout. The confidence level certainly would have been different. I’m not saying it would have been a win, because the Falcons seemed to be in ‘buzz-saw’ mode that night. It just might not have been so discouraging.
Myself, I’m glad Glennon didn’t start the season for a number of reasons.
#1. Lovie brought McCown in to teach Glennon ALL aspects of being a starting QB. McCown needed to be the starting QB in order to do that.
#2 If Glennon had ‘beaten’ McCown for the starting job, Glennon would have been under a microscope for every mistake he made. “See, if McCown had been in there, that wouldn’t have happened.” NOW we know otherwise.
#3. This was NOT going to be a playoff year, regardless of all the crazy talk. Why not see what McCown could do, on the field and with Glennon. I still believe that McCown can be a great mentor for Glennon.

  57. lurker Says:

“Yea he compiled most of his 245 on the final series. Do you even hear yourself?”

    so yards means owning?

seriously, do you guys watch the game sober?

  58. BucIt941 Says:

6-11 in one game versus 5-12 in 3 games. the point was that Glennon obviously slings the ball down field much more frequently than McCown ever tried. Which in this style of offense is actually a good thing. That’s what these 2 WR specialize in.

  59. BoJim Says:

    lurker Said:

“johnson was a great qb. glennon is not even close!

Maybe because he is only starting his second year? Don’t just say things to add to your agenda.

  60. lurker Says:

    bojim,

do you even remember brad johnson? starting your second year doesn’t make you a great or even decent qb.

look up the minnesota vikings’ teams that brad johnson qb’d for. you guys would rewrite history if you could. talk about an agenda!

  61. Hawk Says:

It’s not really fair to compare Johnson’s career to Glennon. First of all, the teams they played for and against are different. Second, and most importantly, Brad had the luxury of watching and learning for 2 1/2 years before being ‘thrown’ into the starting job. He had actual mentors who mentored, and coaches who coached.
But just to throw the facts into the conversation…
    Glennons’s first 9 games (starting)
    64.53% pass compl.
    13-5 TD/INT
    7.37 Y/A
    94.78 QBR

Brad’s first 9 games (rookie & second season mop-up duty)
    64.45% pass compl.
    0-2 TD/INT
    5.85 Y/A
    68.4 QBR
Lest I not be called unfair, here are the stats from Brad’s first 9 ‘starts’ (these are from his THIRD and FOURTH years in the league)
    61.77% pass compl.
    17-11 TD/INT
    7.48 Y/A
    89.57 QBR
