McCown Speaks Words Foreign To Greg Schiano

“Shutup, Sully. That’s working, but we didn’t practice it enough to do it in the second half.”

Greg Schiano would have quite flummoxed if he listened to Josh McCown talk on the Buccaneers Radio Network last night.

You see, McCown discussed how Tampa Bay made in-game adjustments to the Panthers defense, which led to two late touchdown drives and a fourth quarter that left Bucs fans with hope.In what was perhaps the most stunning statistic in Florida football history, the Bucs averaged 5.2 points during the second halves of games last year.

(Remember, Schiano said halftime was more about eating and urinating than Xs and Os.)

Last night, McCown talked about “finding value in every play” and was clear the Bucs’ success late on Sunday against the Panthers had a lot to do with what they saw early.

Imagine that.

The halftime adjustments did absolutely nothing. Only when Carolina went to a prevent did things change.

And I’m pretty sure Schiano’s Bucs averaged more than 0 points for the first halves, so let’s not get giddy about mop up time, garbage points.

  2. geno714 Says:

They were clearly playing a very soft D and keeping everything in front of them. Teams do this all the time and it agonizes fans because they let the other team back in the game. I hate that the Bucs are really in denial that they were terrible on Sunday until the Panthers loosened up their D.

  3. RastaMon Says:

BS…I was here anwatched wht you can not see on TV…Panthers laughing…smoking and joking on the sidelines @ 17-0 8 minutes left in the game….THEY knew they had a W…got sloppy more than the Bucs adjustments. I am quite sure the Bucs were adjusting the whole game…only worked when Carolina took their foot off the Bucs throat !

  4. billy buckaroo Says:

Poor coaches don’t REACT to the game situation and only have “their” way of doing things regardless if it is working or not.

Mediocre coaches REACT to the game situation and make the necessary adjustments

Good coaches make the other teams REACT to what they are doing.

We will see what happens as time goes by.

  5. The_Buc_Realist Says:

A lot of the Panthers secondary backed off 5 yards, let play happen in front and tackle inbounds to keep the clock running, when it got close the played again and slammed the door on the bucs!!

And people need to know that even IF Goldston did Int and Touchdown that would have given the bucs the lead, NOT THE WIN!! there still was time on the clock.

  6. Soggybottom Says:

We could have and should have tried our field goal kicker at 53yrds among other things but not trying at that point in the game was weak.. I know they say he dont have the leg but that was then and this is now.. No guts no glory.. and if we missed panthers ball 35 yrd line big deal..

  7. Jonny 2.3 Says:

@lightning buc: Don’t be a moron. There was no prevent defense played. Don’t make things up when situation as it is is already bad.

  8. OB Says:

    Joe

It must have been the spiking of the Gatorade for his comments, they went to a dime defense.

Also why is no one asking why the FB Lane only got one carry for 54 yards? Why didn’t they use him more? Can you ask that question without being barred by the Bucs?

  9. ShutTheBucUp Says:

I like how McCown is disgusted with himself and the way he played the first 3 quarters. Take the turnovers away and it would have been a different ballgame. Hopefully we don’t see that McCown for the rest of the season.

  10. The_Buc_Realist Says:

Maybe the Bucs need to cut him a couple of times and make old man mcCown coach some high school before he can play average here in Tampa???

  11. Snook Says:

“Shutup, Sully. That’s working, but we didn’t practice it enough to do it in the second half.”

    Hilarious. And so sadly true.

  12. Rob in Land O Lakes Says:

I’m the last person to defend what we saw Sunday, but you all need to look at the Bucs TD drives. Carolina bltized on at least 3-4 occasions during those drives. They didn’t do things like go to a 3-man rush and back the other 8 off.

There is plenty of blame to go around for that performance (Offensive line, Mike Jenkins, Michael Johnson) but Carolina laying down at the end wasn’t one of them.

  13. Bobby Says:

Yeah, I’ve watched that game twice on NFL replay and there was NO prevent defense. Whoever says that has no clue what a prevent defense is.

  14. Tnews Says:

People that say “prevent D” are severely uniformed or were severely impaired during the game.

  16. Skyline Crew Says:

Well that is weird. You play 3 QTRs to figure out what to do in the 4th? How about we make adjustments after 1 QTR?

  17. Ray Rice Says:

I’ve been saying this all along to those dumb a$$es who keep saying that Carolina layed down at the end. WRONG! The Bucs went to a more uptempo attack and did some no huddle and some partial huddle. But they didn’t let Carolina sub at all. Their front 4 was gassed. It also looked as if Mccown was given a little more freedom to call his plays on those drives. Check the tape. For all you dumb a$$es who dont believe. Look at how mad Kuechly was when Rainey scored. That doesn’t look like someone who is playing prevent.

  18. Ptwalk Says:

Bucs played terribly and still had a chance to win. This team is going to get progressively better each wk, Im pretty confident in that with the coaches we hv.

  19. Mathius Says:

Ray Rice must be right the Carolina D was playing harder during the two meaningless scoring drives with less than 8 minutes left in the game. Just look at the difference on the Bucs final drive. Carolina went back to putting pressure on every play. Just look at Kuechly as Rainey fumbled.

We got curb stomped by a crappy team. Gratefully the NFL is a week to week league and we have a great chance for redemption. Folks criticizing fans for calling out the Bucs coaching staff and QB for a horrible start are dick riders. The combination of the 2 lost the game and it wasn’t close. Stop selling snake oil.

They can’t play worse, so I can’t wait to be at the stadium this Sunday saluting DB and watching a win.

  20. BFFL Says:

    McCown the clown

  21. Jonny 2.3 Says:

You know some Bucs fast aren’t familiar with the sport and the team when they cannot recognize Tampa-2 and call it prevent D.

  22. jo_mama Says:

The best thing this web site does and bucs coaching staff and players is make excuses of why we did not win.

Each time you bring up Schanio it just proves this point.

when Lovie Smith finishes with a worst record than Schanio. Your excuse will be he had to fix the mess which Schanio left behind.

  23. Mathius Says:

Some Buc’s fans don’t know what the prevent D is. Prevent D is a zone defense that typically has 7 or more DBs that paly back. These DB’s back up so far that they concede short-yardage plays, but try to ensure that no receiver will be uncovered downfield or can get behind them.

The Cover 2 can fall in to that discription if in the nickel or dime coverage. ex: Carolina went in to the Nickel in the 4th quarter prior to the Bucs second score.

  24. Buc'n Enough Says:

No more QB’s named Josh …..Please!

  25. VeeJay Says:

Well, before we start singing the praises of the coaching staff; how about playing like they played in the 4th qtr. for the whole game. I think that is the style that best fits this team. Up tempo, quick passing game while integrating the run with that. The OL is built that way, the team’s strength is its receivers Jackson, Evans, Seferian-Jenkins) more so than its running backs. Play to your strength!!!!!

  26. ToesOnTheLine Says:

In game adjustments are great but usually more effective when implemented sooner than the final 8 minutes when you haven’t scored a point prior and are facing a 17 point deficit. Hurray for the Bucs and their adjustments, but let’s see it a little earlier this Sunday

  27. Espo Says:

What “prevent” were y’all watching? If you actually watched the game, you’d know otherwise. If you saw Becht’s film segment Joe linked then you’d know otherwise. If you had any idea how these situations usually play out, you’d know otherwise.

  28. knucknbuc Says:

@lightningidiot defending schiano again…ho hum.news flash ur boy schi schi sucked last year and is sitting at home like us watching games on tv. wonder if with schi schis genius would we have scored any points in the second half… Hmmm

  29. buddha Says:

How about a little perspective–and some data. The Buccaneers scored more than 13 points in the second half last year only once. One time, and that was in a game they won decisively at home against the Falcons. Here are their second half totals in games in which they trailed by 10 or more points:

    Patriots 0

    Panthers 7

    Panthers (again) 0

    49ers 7

    Saints 3

Here is their second half production in closer games:

    Jets 3

    Saints (first game) 7

Arizona (a game they led 10-0)

Bills (a game they won decisively) 3

    Lions 7

    Rams 3

Their highest second half scoring was in a game against Atlanta that they won decisively and scored 17 second half points.

So in game one the 14 points they scored was the second highest than in the past 17 games. In blowout losses in which they trailed by as much as they did against Carolina last Sunday they never scored more than 7 and got blanked or scored fewer that 7 in all of them. So the argument regarding “prevent defense” holds no authority at all. Yes, McCown sucked in the first half, but he was an entirely different quarterback in the 2nd half and it wasn’t because of any prevent defense. The Buccaneers made adjustments and he played better. When is the last time that any Buccaneer quarterback completed 70 per cent of his passes and had two touchdowns in the 2nd half? You can say it was too little, too late, but don’t tell me it was because Carolina wasn’t trying. So in all those blowouts last year, the teams were trying, but Carolina wasn’t. Baloney.

Yet teams last year routinely went into a prevent against us for the entire second half of most games last season and we averaged 5.2 points in the 2nd half. Making plays is making plays, scoring is scoring, last year we couldn’t do either in the 2nd half, and all we played against was prevent.

  31. Brandon Says:

Right on, Buddha. Confuse them with the facts!

  32. Trubucfan22 Says:

So People bag on McCown for garbage time points, yet that is something that their savior mike glennon couldn’t even do. Lol the fact McCown can at least get some good garbage time play in makes me feel better than mike glennon who couldn’t beat garbage time defenses for nearly an entire season.
