It’s Glennon!
September 24th, 2014The Mike Glennon Mob is euphoric.
Unless Lovie Smith is playing quite a chess game, the Bucs trotted out Glennon for the weekly starting quarterback press conference today.
Glennon talked about how confident he is versus when took over starting duties in Week 4 last season, and how much more prepared he is.
Joe sure hopes this is means Lovie is making the smart move now that Josh McCown has proven not to be the guy he was with the Bears last season.
It’s another new day in Tampa Bay.
September 24th, 2014 at 1:23 pm
Great news! Now everyone can see if this kid has what it takes instead of talking good or bad about him. Do or die, Go Bucs!
September 24th, 2014 at 1:23 pm
RELEASE THE GIRAFFE!!
September 24th, 2014 at 1:24 pm
Hey !..there has never been a Glennon MOB..only a few that had a open mind about a raw rookie thrown into the fire in a dysfunction clubhouse….NO QB espeically a rookie, last year, that made the best of his baptism of fire. ((rest of comment deleted))
Rasta, you don’t get to come in here and lie and misrepresent Joe. Joe has not determined and claimed Glennon is destined for failure. Why do you and so many others lie and also consider being a strong backup a failure? Also, please stop posting off-topic links, or just links. This is not a message board.–Joe
September 24th, 2014 at 1:24 pm
sad part is, for all the lip service, lovies actions have made it seems as though he is at best a stop-gap.
kind of like a late night booty call or the fat girl at the bar at 2am.
hopefully this motivates him and he excels.
f#$k lovie
September 24th, 2014 at 1:24 pm
Will Lovie let him throw a pass over 12 yards?
September 24th, 2014 at 1:24 pm
Advice to Glennon…the Bucs will be loosing 21-0 before the 1st quarter is over. Just try to focus on one play at a time and not trying to do too much. I know this is easier said than done when the defense is this pathetic, but you cannot worry about them and just focus on getting better as an offense. If you can manage a 20+ point performance with no turnovers then consider it a victory for yourself and the offfense, but please do not have any misguided fantasies that the Bucs can actually win. If you do not accept what I’m telling you then you better be prepared to score about 50 points.
September 24th, 2014 at 1:25 pm
Thanks joe, Like glennon or not its the right move right now..
September 24th, 2014 at 1:26 pm
You gotta be kidding me Joe. This kid ain’t the answer. Another new day in Tampa bay will be in May 2015 with the first pick on 2015 NFL draft the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select…..
September 24th, 2014 at 1:28 pm
Déjà vu
September 24th, 2014 at 1:29 pm
Sweet! I became a fan of his last season.
Hopefully this turns the season around.
September 24th, 2014 at 1:30 pm
It’s not so much the offense I am worried about. Even if they get shut down by the Steelers, hopefully with Glennon we will not witness idiotic turnovers and bad decision making. This defense though, going up against Bell & Blount, Big Ben & Antonio Brown, is going to be ripped to shreds.
September 24th, 2014 at 1:32 pm
I just listened to Joe’s hour (33 minutes) with Duemig yesterday. I thought your reasoning for suggesting a move to Glennon was sound: the team stinks, McCown has stunk, he’s 35 years old and if he can’t win games, it’s time to see if Glennon deserves to be on the roster any more. I wish Duemig had moderated a less infantile discussion.
September 24th, 2014 at 1:34 pm
I’d love for Glennon to prove me wrong and convince me to join his mob. I’m an eternal optimist when it comes to the Bucs.
Unlike Joe who’s dying of thirst and thinks it’s a good idea to down a nice big glass of seawater cause he’s gonna die anyway.
September 24th, 2014 at 1:36 pm
Just watched the Press Conference – He has definitely got thicker arms by FAR than he had as a rookie! If you got rid of his 3ft long neck and looked at his shoulders down, he has bulked up a bit.
September 24th, 2014 at 1:46 pm
Glennon mic’ed up as the receiver drops a pass:
“You’re such a freakin’idiot. Gosh!”
Glennon mic’ed up as the receiver catches a pass:
“Sweet moves!”
Go Bucs! Go MG8!!
# Fire the fans, it’s their fault
September 24th, 2014 at 1:47 pm
This from McCoy today: “He got to take over the circus (last year). He was like the (ringmaster). It was like, ‘Dang”
Demar Dotson: ” DemarDotson says if he was Glennon, he’d have a chip, cause they brought McCown”
Pretty apparent that the players have Glennon’s back, even though the local press have no frickin clue
September 24th, 2014 at 1:48 pm
@Wombat, Ya he does look bulked up some and maybe the long neck is a good thing being a QB, kind of like a telescope in the submarines..lol
September 24th, 2014 at 1:50 pm
Good thing about this week is that this opponent won’t be able to beat them twice.

September 24th, 2014 at 1:55 pm
I am confused, is Glennon the new starter or the backup (to the backup) to McCown while McCown recovers from the injury to his (ego) hand?
September 24th, 2014 at 1:56 pm
It doesnt matter if our inept Defense led by the INEPT Leslie (who wanted josh freeman last year btw, and got him, and lost with him, while setting another record) cant do SQUAT!!!
I understand injuries, but come on, AGAINST A 3RD STRING QB FOR THE FRIGGIN RAMS?!?!? I gave up after that game….KNEW FOR SURE we’d be in the top 5 of next year’s draft…and with the injuries we have now, IM JUST WAITING ON MORE FRIGGIN MRSA!!!!!
Good luck to you MG8, SO SORRY you’re once again being thrown into another SH*T STORM!!!
September 24th, 2014 at 1:58 pm
I too hope that Glennon “Is The Answer”…..I don’t think that he is, but I am not sure he could be any worse than McCown…..For some reason, (I guess because it is still only “Week 4” in the Season) I still remain optimistic; as compared to other readers and their comments in other articles. At any rate, let’s hope that Glennon provides a spark!
September 24th, 2014 at 1:58 pm
War Glennon!
(Gosh!)
September 24th, 2014 at 1:59 pm
BTW, im not “euphoric” about ANY of this…..but it is what it is, and MG8 will D@mn sure be better than that McClown that was trotted onto the field…..!!!!….SMDFH!!
September 24th, 2014 at 1:59 pm
Had to weigh-in. a 13 game (26 games total) evaluation of Glennon is enough of a sample size to determine if he is the solution at QB or not.
Under serious organizational turmoil last year, Glennon did some good and bad things. Impossible to say under those circumstances & that limited sample, if he is THE GUY or not.
We know that 5 prior orgs (including many pundits) deem McCown no more than a career backup. At 35, and with 3 unimpressive games here under his belt, there is NO good reason to continue with this experiment.
We all need to know if the team needs to go QB early in draft or FA or trade. Yes, the team is auditioning for the future at this point – sad but true.
The only way they are not auditioning,is if Glennon leads an immediate turnaround, which is great, and suggests that he may be better than we all think – this makes a stronger case for turning the team over to Glennon now.
bottom line: McCown should be done here barring injury to Glennon.
September 24th, 2014 at 2:01 pm
To everyone that is already talking about next year’s draft, do everyone a favor and STFU and come back to the page when the draft is coming. We’re all upset the Bucs got trashed on live TV, but to be talking about the draft already is absurd.
Mike Glennon is gonna show people that he is a real QB. If Nick Foles and Kirk Cousins can make it in the NFL, why can’t Glennon?

Do the chickens have large talons?
September 24th, 2014 at 2:05 pm
I’m supporting Glennon all the way! I hate that they throw him in when it’s so hard and difficult to win. I hope the teams stands with him. I’m tired of Lovie Smiths attitude and his lack of confidese in the offense. I just read he’s been through a handful of offensive coaches in Chiago and knowing what I know now with his history with the bears..we’ll always have a sad offense. Lovie Smith is totally outdated thinking the defense can win the game. I just really don’t like his selfmessteam and his choices at all.
September 24th, 2014 at 2:05 pm
There are QB’s who can lead their team to the Super Bowl. MG is not one of those elite Q.B.’s.
There are Q.B.’s with enough talent and poise to be part of a TEAM that reaches the Super Bowl. That’s what I’m hoping to see from MG8. He doesn’t have to be Andrew Luck or Drew Brees. If he can reach Brad Johnson level then we’ll be fine. Uh…fine in a couple of years when we finally retool this absolutely horrid defense.
And again I ask the question. Do we really want to tie up boat loads of cash on ONE player who has missed half the snaps since he was drafted? I love GMAC as a great team leader and fine human being. I respect his talent which is truly impressive WHEN he’s on the field. I’m just worried that he’s far toooo fragile to tie up the REALLY REALLY BIG bucks.
September 24th, 2014 at 2:06 pm
If Gleenon was playing for a stable franchise with an established roster…well then perhaps conclusions could be drawn…what we have is a rust bucket of a ship will holes in the hull and leaking…..at the same time its rainy outside…the captain of this ship SS JBF.com….says it’s sinking because it’s raining……
September 24th, 2014 at 2:07 pm
I am just glad the Bucs are going with the “Better” Quarterback. Will MG8 take this team to the playoff this year, no. But he will not lay an egg as bad as Old Man mcCown did.
The sad part is that they wasted a whole offseason on the career backup mcCown. So once again the Bucs turn to the better QB with little to no work with 1’s from training camp and preseason.
September 24th, 2014 at 2:15 pm
I’m happy Glennon is getting the start. I think he is an upgrade from Josh McCown. That being said, don’t wxpect MG8 to set the field on fire right away either….remember, who was annointed “starter” from day one? McCown! Who got all the first team reps in the minicamps throughout the Spring? McCown! Who got all the first team reps in training camp? Mccown! Who got all the first team reps through 4 preseason games? McCown! And who got all the first team reps through the first 3 games of the regular season? Mccown! I think Glennon will play well, but it may take a couple of weeks of being the starter before he gets his timing down with his WR’s. I still think he will play better than McCown! GO BUCS!
September 24th, 2014 at 2:18 pm
If YOU dont like me or any of us talking about the draft already, then you can KISS MY OPTIMISTIC @SS, because thats the ONLY optimistic light left while staring down this dark tunnel we’re going through….Some of us look for the bright side where we can FIND it, SO WHAT if you dont like it “bucfan4lyf”….do what you do while we do what we do…..and if you havent yet figured out this season is done, then you’re special and well, what else is left to say…..
September 24th, 2014 at 2:18 pm
@RastaMon
Saying there is no MGM is a lie. There are proud, card carrying members. At least for now. When he can’t win games? Suddenly there will be crickets.
September 24th, 2014 at 2:19 pm
Grammar police please come arrest this story.
Anyways, did you really think they were going to start McCown who is injured?
September 24th, 2014 at 2:20 pm
Simple question?
Arroyo sends the play to Lovie,
Lovie over-rides and sends another in
Glennon gets up to the line and realizes that it isn’t going to work against the defense setup
Then What??
Can Glennon over-ride Lovie?
September 24th, 2014 at 2:20 pm
@ Dallasbuc, Glennon said at the end, that has not been discussed.
September 24th, 2014 at 2:27 pm
Bucsfan4lyfe—except it’s not absurd. Not the slightest. They suck. They gave up 56 in 3 quarters. And they will sure as hell be getting a top 3 pick along with jacksonville and Oakland. Take it to the bank.
September 24th, 2014 at 2:28 pm
I’m going to say Bucs lose this week. We have a sh!tty defense and now we have a OC who is gone. WTF else can go wrong? Let’s just hope VJAX and his broken wrist can catch a pass. Let’s hope that Evans brings that long pass in instead of letting it bounce off his hands. Let’s hope whomever is calling the Offense let’s Glennon throw because we are probably going to be down. We can’t contain Brown. Julio went crazy and Brown can do the same. Good luck secondary you are going to need it.
September 24th, 2014 at 2:28 pm
I hope he does well.
September 24th, 2014 at 2:28 pm
Glennon is the least of our worries. I say give him the rest of the season to evaluate his play and see if he has a starting or back up role for the future seasons. Stats are not going to be much help in his evaluation though since opponents huge leads week after week will lead to a ton of easy, uncontested underneath route completions.
September 24th, 2014 at 2:30 pm
The only good thing about our lose on Thursday is that we get some extra days to game plan and that lose wasn’t the biggest lose in prime time.
September 24th, 2014 at 2:33 pm
@Skyline, but it was the biggest on a thursday night….hanging our record hats on that one…..fugly!
September 24th, 2014 at 2:34 pm
It’s time to cut McClown.
September 24th, 2014 at 2:34 pm
Well if our defense plays like last week at least our offense will get several first downs. 1 each time the Steelers score.
September 24th, 2014 at 2:40 pm
The future is now?
September 24th, 2014 at 3:01 pm

September 24th, 2014 at 3:03 pm
Don’t worry he’ll flip flop again here shortly.
Funny I could have sworn I saw that Glennon was a great bacck up numerous times from these here pages.
Guess that never happened… lolol
September 24th, 2014 at 3:17 pm
Joe,
I agree with an earlier poster that The Big Dog is just like Josh McCown…old & ready for the couch. His rants are infantile.
I am ok with Glennon, but I think Tampa should pick up Tim Tebow. The guy has a winning record, he would fill Raymond James Stadium, and the only one who would make Tampa a circus is the media (Big Dog).
I am so over Steve Deumig with his kissing Lovie’s Butt. I feel if Lovie does not go 11-5 he should go (making t-shirts) bye bye. Ok, so he lost 3 games….make it 8-4 or Lovie is no more! Anyway, all we heard was Lovie was the guru of defense….what a joke! He got his way and they spent a ton of money…so if the Bucs are not 8-8 there is no way I feel he should be back. Deumig rode Schiano out of town, well at least the guy had an excuse. He was a first time NFL coach with only college experience and only college assistants. What is Lovie’s excuse.
Tebow….Tebow….Tebow…Tebow…Tebow…..!!
Keep up the good work Joe!!
September 24th, 2014 at 3:26 pm
Spoiler Alert!!!
Tampa will win in Pittsburgh… Pittsburgh coming off a big win on the road against a tuff Carolina team going against a Buc team that was totally embarrassed on national tv last Thursday… Glennon will give this team renewed confidence because he will actually be able to manage the game and limit idiotic turnovers that were commoplace during McCown’s reign of terror…
Its called a let down game and Pittsburgh is primmed for an ambush…
Go BUCS!
September 24th, 2014 at 3:30 pm
Lol mgm or aka Glennon excuse club. At first I was thinking Glennon could make you all look a bunch of rookies who just started watching football because you don’t know what a real franchise quarterback looks like but then I thought nah the way mcclown played changed that and instead he’ll show us just what he is and always will be, a guy that’s gonna come in work hard just like they claimed mcclown did, get in the game complete 70% of his passes with over a 98 passer rating.
Of course 95% of all his passes will be check downs with maybe 5 going beyond 15 yards and only connecting on one or two barely throwing for 200 yards and that’s who he is
I’m sure the excuse fan club will use the coordinator, the o line, the run game and Vincent Jackson as an excuse. I’m calling it first so I can repost this after the game.
If he torches the steelers I’ll just say so what so did tebow
September 24th, 2014 at 3:46 pm
I was prepared to bet big against the bucs. But Glennon is an unknown.
September 24th, 2014 at 3:49 pm
buc4lyfe…”if he torches the steelers I’ll just say so what so did tebow”… Glad you got your excuse all ready to go if you need it. Let me guess, you don’t like Glennon as QB. Duh! Lovie just said it’s a good chance it will be Mike Glennon this week. Cry in your spilt milk.
September 24th, 2014 at 3:51 pm
If he torches the steelers I’ll just say so what so did tebow
@ buc4lyfe
You sir are a straight up idiot.
Glennon threw 19 TDs last year to 9 Ints.
I don’t care how far down field he throws.
September 24th, 2014 at 4:16 pm
If Glennon didn’t look like a redheaded geek crane, and looked studly like Johnny football, folks would be calling the guy a great catch.
Last season he didn’t do what 90% of all rookie OB’s do: make dumb-ass mistakes.
He played on a crap team run by a tyrant who made no bones about “don’t screw up” as a QB. So Glennon didn’t screw up, as he was told, and took care of the ball, again as he was told. This makes him a mediocre or bad QB? Or a QB with a dubious future as a non-starter?
I don’t get it…
September 24th, 2014 at 4:32 pm
Saying there is no MGM is a lie. There are proud, card carrying members. At least for now. When he can’t win games? Suddenly there will be crickets.
————————————-
There is absolutely nothing wrong with supporting the guy since he has not proven he is complete garbage.
Of course the know it alls of the world swear they know better. Funny how most of them swore a certain QB we had was destined for greatness… The know it alls now sing a different tune when it comes to that. Lol
September 24th, 2014 at 4:54 pm
For all of the idiots that think Glennon doesn’t have a good deep ball, he ranked tenth in the league last year for completion percentage on balls thrown 20 or more yards down field. He ranked first for TD-to-INT ratio on balls thrown 20 or more yards. As a rookie.
Glennon will absolutely be a solid NFL starting QB. But he’s probably not going to fully develop until his third or fourth season.
In the meantime, he needs to play, for better or for worse.
When Glennon took over for Freeman, our offensive production immediately increased by one TD per game. If our offensive production was one TD per game better this year, we would be 2-1 right now instead of 0-3.
Glennon makes quick decisions and pushes the ball down field. Forget about his mistakes, the same mistakes most young QBs make, and focus on the reality that the offense just clicks faster with Glennon, and that he can shake off his mistakes and still put the team in position to score.
Mike Glennon = more points.
September 24th, 2014 at 4:59 pm
Sorry Mac –
No one is buying it, this is very bad team!
September 24th, 2014 at 5:01 pm
You can tell this season is over – we are actually debating a backup qb production and ceiling. A BACKUP QB!
September 24th, 2014 at 5:28 pm
Doesn’t matter. Glennon plays ok, he’ll be “King of the world” QB for doing it with no reps in practice/preseason and all the injuries and missing OC. If he can’t win games, continues to dump off on 3rd and long or late in games when we’re down a score or two, then he’ll be declared to not have been given a fair chance and he’s “better than he showed” because he didn’t have his OC and half the team was hurt and he didn’t get the reps in preseason. Nothing will be determined or decided by the fan-base. Maybe by the coaches, but whatever they decide will be opposed by one faction or other of the fan-base.
September 24th, 2014 at 5:31 pm
Part of the reason some of us are cautiously optimistic about Mike Glennon, is that he took receivers like Tiquan Underwood (Rutgers, 7th rounder to Jax but cut/resigned by Jax/NE/Bucs) and had 24 receptions for 440yds (18.3ypc) and 4 TDs. Also Tim Wright (Rutgers, undrafted free agent) who had 54 catches for 571 yds (10.6ypc) and 5 TDs. Surely our high round draft picks should be an upgrade, don’t you think? But they were all checkdowns , right??

September 24th, 2014 at 5:37 pm
@Architek
Glennon is a BUINO. Back-up in name only.
He is starter in this league, and should have been prepped as our starter this year.
Get back to me in two seasons, and we’ll see how Glennon looks compared to half of the other “starting” QBs in this league.
September 24th, 2014 at 5:52 pm
Let’s look at Vincent Jackson, our #1 receiver:
1st three games 2013 with JF5:
15 for 265 yds/ 17.7 average/ 0 TDs
Last 13 games 2013 with MG8:
63 for 959 yds/ 15.2 average/ 7 TDs
And that was with Mike Williams out for half of the year, and Underwood (out of the league), Owusu (out of the league at present), Dawson (out of the league), which led to double-teams in the last half of the season.
1st three games 2014 with JMcC12:
10 for 102 yds/ 10.2 average/ 1 TD
No wait a minute. That would be only nine for ninety and 0 TDs for McCown, because his 12 yd TD reception was from Glennon (admittedly a gift)

September 24th, 2014 at 6:10 pm
@Senor Mofo
And you just disregard the following issues in his game:
– poor pocket presence
– poor feel for real pressure
– constantly misreading
– misthrows on big downs
– Often too quick to check down
– limited mobility
– not elite arm strength
– Never climbs the pocket
– no excapability
– led the 32nd ranked offense
– lastly absurd followers (including his psycho brother)
Yeah you’re right he’s the starter here and that’s why we are about to go 0-16.
September 24th, 2014 at 6:45 pm
I’m pulling strongly for Glennon to go out at Pittsburgh and have a very good game, which is not out of the realm of a possibility. That would shut up the anti Glennon mob for about a week and that would be like heaven sent. Go Glennon! Shut them up!
September 24th, 2014 at 6:48 pm
@Architek
Tom Brady has elite arm strength? Peyton Manning is mobile? Aaron Rodgers never checks down and never gets sacked? Drew Brees never makes a bad throw?
Do you even watch football?
Even the elite QBs have their issues. Glennon will probably never be elite, but he can develop to a level where he can be consistently good. That’s more than this franchise has ever had.
Meanwhile, “fans” like you can just go on dreaming that maybe a rookie QB will fall into our lap that puts up Russell Wilson-like rookie stats.
But for those of us that live on planet Earth, Glennon is our best chance right now.
September 24th, 2014 at 6:50 pm
BamBamBuc,
Sounds like you have some doubts about Glennon. Can you refresh my memory, weren’t you pro-Freeman and against his benching? How’d that work out?
1
Glennon just deserves the chance to play over McCown. And sit back and try to believe in Glennon like you believed inFreeman.
The MGM was born on player evaluation. The other “Josh” starting QB was not better than Glennon either. May the best player play.
September 24th, 2014 at 7:20 pm
tickrdr – why are you looking at VJ #s for Glennon? I would think VJs #s reflect VJs performance. But since you brought it up, based on your #s, he averaged 5 catches a game the first 3 last year. After that, he averaged less than 5 catches a game. He averaged more yards per catch before, then less after. That is supposed to build Glennon’s case? Then you add all the backups and double teams as if that supports Glennon. No, that says that VJ raised his game just enough to almost overcome the circumstance (meaning his stats didn’t decline much, but they did decline). It says nothing about Glennon at all.
If we really want to reflect how VJ affected Glennon, he caught 63 of Glennon’s 247 completions, about 25%. Yet VJ accounted for nearly 37% of Glennon’s passing yards, his average per catch nearly 5 yards above Glennon’s average per completion meaning the other 75% of the throws were enough under the 10.6 per completion for Glennon and further under the 15.2 per reception of VJ that it drew Glennon’s #s down to 10.6 per completion. That’s not check downs or dump off’s at all, now is it? Could the fact that all but 2 of Brian Leonard’s 29 receptions came in the final 13 weeks for a whopping 5.85 ypc. How about the fact that 2/3, 8 of 12, of Martin’s catches came from Glennon passes in the 2+ games he played with Glennon, while only 4 came in 3 games from Freeman. Not check downs? 14 from Glennon to Rainey. 9 to James, 9 to Lorig. 69 completions to RBs out of 247.
You can talk about “bit players” all you want, but Glennon threw over 50% of his completions to either VJ or a RB. Wright accounted for almost another 25% (TE that averaged no better per catch than Glennon per completion at 10.6). So, almost 75% of completions to VJ, any RB (check down), or TE (at 10/catch I still say check down because we often had more than 10 to go after run/run/pass offense)
And I’m not even going to entertain the Underwood stats, a WR that lined up as #2WR, caught less than 10% of the QBs completions, but got enough big breaks (85 yard TD) to inflate his stats and make people think the QB was better than he was.
September 24th, 2014 at 7:30 pm
SteveK, yes, I was one that supported Freeman, and didn’t think the benching was a good idea at the time (even waiting one more week would have given Glennon the bye week to prepare for the Eagles, and the Eagles NO GAME FILM on him). I really don’t care where Freeman is now, I have come here and stated (recently) that I do think it’s a good move to put Glennon back in, I don’t think we’ll get an honest evaluation of Glennon (either he “overcomes” all the injuries, OC, etc. and is a “savior” or those become excuses as to why he still hasn’t succeeded and how he needs another chance).
I believed we needed to draft another QB in the last draft (I thought there would be 2 or 3 pretty good NFL QBs with Bridgewater and Bortles being the main 2 and one of Manziel or Carr being a possible other). Now that that is pointless, we are still losing games and will have another shot next year, though I’m not yet sold on Mariotta, Winston, Hundley, etc. I’ll have to see how the college season plays out. If we fail to draft one next year, because we buy the excuses or limited success of Glennon then we will likely continue to have opportunities to draft a top QB in each successive draft. I just hope we don’t wait for the “perfect” QB (Andrew Luck type) and end up getting stuck in a draft that only has Manuel, Smith, Glennon type QBs available.
September 24th, 2014 at 7:39 pm
BamBamBuc,
Thanks for the comment. Glennon is going to get as good of a chance as any QB is going to get here in Tampa. We are dreadful, and it’s going to take strong QB play to get anything going.
Who do you think are the top 3 NFL prospects coming in this draft.
Personally, I hope we get to trade back for a king’s ransom.
September 24th, 2014 at 9:48 pm

As always an interesting and provocative post!
Just for yucs and grins, I again did a little research on NFL.com re: QB completions to WRs and TEs vs. RBs and FBs. Only had time to do a few so….
Peyton Manning 2013 —– 450 completions
Moreno 60, Ball 20, Hillman12 —- 92 receptions
Wow, looks like you were right ‘cuz 92/450 = Only 20.4 % to RB/FB!!
Matt Ryan 2013 ——- 439 completions
Rodgers 52, Jackson 33, Snelling 29, Dimarco 8, Ewing 2, Smith 2, Vaughan 1
——127 of 439 to RB/FB = 28.9% Hmmm, maybe I forgot to carry a 1??
Drew Brees 2013 ——- 446 completions
Thomas 77, Sproles 71, Collins 14, Ingram 7, Cadet 2 —– 171 !?!
171 of 446 = 38.3% of all completions to an RB or FB.
Honestly, those are the only ones I looked up…….. oh, except for MG8.
Mike Glennon 2013 ——- 247 completions
Leonard 29, Martin 12, Lorig 11, James 10, Demps 3, Hill 2, and Penn(OT) 1.
Total = 68 by my count, not 69. 68 of 247 = 27.5% to an RB or FB
But by your post and confirmed on NFL.com———–
4 of Martin’s 12 were from JF5
2 of Leonard’s 29 were from JF5
1 of Lorig’s 11 were from JF5
68-7 from JF5 and not MG8 = 61 of 247 = 24.6% for Captain Checkdown.
BTW VJax with JF5 2013 = 0 TDs
VJax with JMcC12 2014 = 0 TDs
VJax with MG8 2013 = 7 TDs
and while the pass to Donald Penn was technically a checkdown, it was a 1 yd TD catch.

I would be happy this weekend to at least see the Bucs give the Steelers some trouble. A couple of sacks would be a bonus. A VJax TD would be redemtion. And for God’s sake get Martin a few holes to run through.
Well, if they get spanked again like little b*tches, at least the coaches won’t yell at them =-[

Do I watch football???
Obviously I do and I watched this Bucs team suck for the better part of 12 years.
And you keep hoping this backup qb is going to make the headlines for being the underdog story!
Thank God you’re not the GM of any team because unfortunately notions and gut feelings will get you fired like Dominik and the others.
How about you apologize for mentioning HOFs in the same sentence as Glennon – what a joke – I won’t discuss this with you or anyone because it moot. Manning and Brady and Rodgers – Compared to Glennon chile please!!!!

you forgot Rainey, and 2 of Lorig’s receptions were in the first 3 games, I didn’t include Penn, Demps or Hill. 4 of Rainey’s 15 receptions were in Cleveland, so he had 11 added to your 61 is 72 minus the 1 for Lorig is actually 71. Add the 5 to Demps and Hill and you’re at 76 of 247. Nearly 1/3.
Next, I wouldn’t include the % Brees throws to RBs, it’s their system. They throw the ball “as a run play” to the backs. It’s designed to get them in space. Their average per reception was significantly higher per RB (except Pierre Thomas) than any of our backs. Those backs averaged 8-10 yards per reception where as ours averaged 2-6 yards per reception. They nearly doubled the yards per catch. One is a check down, the other is a designed play to the back to get them in space and allow them to run after the catch.
It’s similar to teams that run a lot of screen passes. It’s designed and executed to get the RB beyond the DL with blockers. Philly liked to do this and things similar to the Saints. McCoy and Bryce Brown both averaged over 10 yards per catch. They weren’t check downs.
The Broncos RBs averaged 7-9 ypc. Colts 6-9 ypc. Patriots 6-9 ypc. The Falcons were similar to our numbers at about 6-7 ypc. Why are other teams typically higher in RB avg ypc? Because their passes to the backs are designed, ours are check downs. The difference is that by the time the QB has gone through progressions or feels pressure, the secondary has time to find the check down and limit yards after catch.

Excellent response, and you’re right, I did overlook Rainey. My bad!
I also agree that the better QBs are able to throw the receiver “open” , whether to a wideout or a running back, allowing them to get more YAC, rather than the checkdown where the receiver has his back to the opponent’s goal line, and has often stopped to catch the ball. Some checkdown passes are thrown with the back facing downfield where he at least has a chance to make a defender miss. I also think that the better teams have better offensive lines to allow the receiver, even on checkdowns, to get further downfield before the ball is delivered ( i.e. they didn’t need to stay back for a chip block on a rusher before releasing), and are also more likely to get better blocking on even the checkdowns, and thus more yardage. We shall see if Glennon has progressed, or regressed.

That’s exactly it – the point is us realists are looking for flashes of franchise qualities and we have yet to see it.
Throwing WRs open – picking and choosing where to attack secondaries –
Moving in the pocket with instincts and making a game changing play.
Just the little things that give you confidence and a foundation to build on. I feel that with MG what you see is what you get. Not bad but definitely not really good.
