Glennon Play Will Shape The Draft

Bucs GM Jason Licht

Ahh, the Bucs life. Already talking draft in September. Not good.

But that’s what happens when you’re 0-3 and two of the “easy” home games against backup quarterbacks are in the rearview mirror.

Enter new starter/former starter Mike Glennon, the guy Lovie Smith labeled “quarterback of the future.” The future is here, with Glennon starting tomorrow and, if the Bucs are wise, for the rest of 2014.

Former Bucs QB Shaun King, now of NBC Sports Network and Yahoo! Sports, says the new Glennon era is very much about “playing for the organization to not have to draft a quarterback in the first round.”

If Glennon can’t thrive, King said on WDAE-AM 620 this week, “the Bucs are forced into a first-round pick” of quarterback next spring.

Yes, King is down on his former teammate Josh McCown

“It’s up to Glennon,” King explained, saying all he has to do is perform well and stabilize the offense over the next two weeks and Lovie should stick with him.

Joe hollered left and right, high and low, for the Bucs to draft a quarterback this past offseason. It seemed the wise move, considering it was a new regime and a new offense. What better time to bring in a rookie QB? But the Bucs weren’t having any of that.

Yes, Joe agrees with King. If Glennon can’t clearly show he’s a quarterback to hang your offense on in the quarterback-rich NFC South, then the Bucs have no choice but to draft a QB or craft a blockbuster trade for a win-now arm (very hard to do).

There are also ripple effects there. If the Bucs do draft a quarterback in 2015, then likely would be wise to use another high pick on an offensive lineman.

Joe wishes Glennon well.

    Mariota. ‘Nuff said.

  2. Buccfan37 Says:

I wish Glennon well also. I’m not anticipating spectacular play tomorrow from the QB position, but adequate enough to give the team a chance to pull out the win. If the rest of the team plays their best game, it can happen.

  3. RastaMon Says:

that 4th for Mankins…is now really the last 3rd round pick…
    1-2-3-5th 6th-7th….

  4. Bucfreak Says:

We’re seeing how our options are performing in the upcoming weeks. We’ll see how the rookies do.

I for one think Bortles performed admirably last Saturday. Would the Bucs have pulled the trigger with him there? Who knows.

  5. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Sorry Joe but Johnny Playboy er Football can’t even crack the starting lineup for the Brownies.

This coming year’s draft offers many more prospects that this past year’s crop.

The Bucs should NOT have drafted a QB this year. First let’s see what MG8 can do. Then if we need to draft, this year’s crop has better prospects, even if you rule out Mr Egomaniac the incredibly immature Jameis, what’s the next scandal Winston. Gawd I hope the Bucs don’t mess with him. I don’t care how freaking talented he is. He’s clearly a total head case. Yes young men make mistakes, but how many do overs does this man-child get before he’s actually held accountable for his actions.

  6. Buccfan37 Says:

That pic of Licht shows the wear of 3 straight opening losses, the first pic I’ve seen when he was’nt smiling.

  7. Tony Says:

    Joe,

I think the bigger problem was being married to a QB out of this years draft class that, for all intents and purposes, was pretty mediocre. I like Bortles but am slightly biased as I’m a UCF fan. Manziel is/was exciting but it’s looking more and more like he was a product of the system. Carr is meh. If there is more of a can’t miss type QB you get him. Mariota seems like one of those types of guys. I for one would not touch Winston. Can’t imagine once he gets some money in his pockets how is behavior is going to be.

  8. Joe Says:

Actually, Joe snapped that picture of Licht the day he announced Carl Nicks was done.

  9. Joe Says:

@Tony – Joe also campaigned for Bridgewater. Bucs could have traded up for him easily. … Again, Joe hopes Glennon thrives and makes this a non-issue.

  10. gt40bear Says:

Don’t forget we need to get an impact pass rushing DE! If we have to use 1st rounder on a QB, will hurt chances of upgrading pass rush! Please shut the critics up MG8…for a variety of reasons!

  11. gt40bear Says:

BTW, I don’t care if Cryin’ Ryan Leaf were our starting QB right now, PLEASE GOD don’t even sniff Shameless Jameis!

  12. Mr. Mudge Says:

..and when we draft a QB in round one and an offensive lineman in round 2, everyone will be crying about how stupid it was to not draft a DE. At this point the DE need is greater than OL, it would appear.

  13. BirdDoggers Says:

Don’t put it past Lovie to forego a QB in the draft if Glennon doesn’t prove himself. There are many other areas of need on this team and Lovie likes to rely on subpar QBs. I can see him going defense heavy in the next draft, in an effort to build the team the way he wants it. Defense first.

  14. kevin Says:

Even if we had Andrew Luck or Aaron rodgers. With the coaching and playcalling and horrible defense it would not matter. Until those things change I wouldnt give a shit if rhe bucs had a time machine and could go back and get John elway it wouldnt matter. The offense is going to run pass run run pass run run pass run every week

  15. Broy34 Says:

Can you guys stop with the Jameis stuff. If you’re up to date on what he’s done wrong you can be up to date on the fact he’s not coming out this year

  16. SteveK Says:

    Go Glennon!
I’m pulling for you to take this job.

  17. Snook Says:

I wish him well too but its just not going to happen. He sucks just like McCown.

All we can hope for is no meaningless wins.

    0-16 for Mariota.

Question is, will Glennon even be around for Marcus to take the #8 from?

  18. chargedcbh Says:

    Mariota. ‘Nuff said

  19. Luther Says:

Suck for Mariota…meh…doesn’t rhyme but that’s all I have to look forward to. Winning 4-5 games would be the worst for me. Back in the same boat looking at all the premium talent leave the board before it’s your turn.

  20. BucFanInArkansas Says:

Long way to go until things are settled, but the top of Joe’s post was the absolute truth… Thinking/talking/forecasting the draft in September SUCKS. And I’m tired of it.

  21. BucTrooper Says:

It’s all about Jameis. A true playmaker. I don’t care what he yells in the student union. We can rebrand all those FREEMAN -5 jerseys.

  22. lurker Says:

mariota was crap last year and ok this year. this year’s crop is not better than last year’s…who else is there? hundley….lol

we needed to draft a qb last year and we are suffering now. crap, take one every year until it clicks.

however, it probably don’t matter with lovie at the helm.

  23. Couch Fan Says:

Some of you crack me up. “I wish Glennon does well but he wont.” Might as well say you hope he sucks because it is clear that is what you mean.

  24. BlakeJohnson Says:

I don’t care if Jameis Winston stole some crab legs and yelled out “f*** her right in the p****!” In fsu’s union. He’s by far the most talented quarterback in all of college football. He’s got insanely good pocket awareness, accuracy to spare, a POWERFUL arm, excellent vision, quick with his reads, great leader on the field/highly competitive, and mobile to boot. If he declares and we have the #1 pick, I’d be pissed if we don’t take him. If he’s not in this years draft, Mariota is a solid prospect too, although I’ve always been wary of quarterbacks who like to run as much as they like to pass, because they tend to get hurt. However if he can turn out to be the Rothlesberger/Russell Wilson type of Qb then I’d be more than happy with him. I’m just disappointed that we even have to talk about having the first overall pick.

  25. Zam Says:

As important as QB is nowadays, I’d draft like 7 QB’s. Keep the best, trade the others for proven talent.

Kinda like Rays do with pitchers (only you’d keep the good ones).

  26. SuckForTheDuck Says:

    Its Mariota or bust

  27. Tackleblockwin Says:

Well, we are certainly left to wonder what our record would currently be if Glennon started from the beginning. I’m guessing 1-2. Boy does that sure look so much better than 0-3.

  28. Danny Says:

Shaun King, one of two Bucs QBs to lose the NFC Championship Game with defenses that gave up 11 or fewer points…

  29. Captain Stagger Says:

Mariota would be a waste of talent under this sham of a coach. Lovie is way too conservative for a guy like that.

    “Ok Marcus, 1st down….hand off…2nd down….hand off….3rd and 7…..hand off”

  30. Mike10 Says:

Joe, I’m sorry but our QB is not on this team. We’ve been this bad BECAUSE we don’t have a good QB. Not one game last year did we see anything from Glennon that would make me believe him to be a franchise guy. There is nothing wrong with a quality backup – esp if we end up with Mariota or Winston – who like to run around.

But this QB thing has to be addressed now buddy, bc it’ll take at least 1-2 year for our mystery QB to come into his own so every year we don’t get one is another 2+years lost…

It ain’t Glennon – so stop beatin around the bush with “we’ll be forced to pick a QB in the first.”

And as far as last year and drafting a QB @ 7… lol… Joe, after Bortles, everyone else was at best 2 rd quality. Unless of course you want to find ourselves in a Tannehill situation in 3 years… because if it’s Mo Money Mo problems Johnny football barking it’s not his fault but the franchises that he sucks, well, hello Sportscenter!…

But then again, it would be nice to see the BUcs on Sportscenter ever again..

  31. d-money Says:

Gotta love the “fans” that start wishing for losses 3 games into the season to get a better draft pick.

    You just sound ignorant.

  32. Ray Rice Says:

Fat A$$ King knows plenty about not thriving and forcing a team to take a QB because you cant put 10 points on the board. Unfortunately, the dumb coach back then didn’t believe in drafting QB’s either. So here we are again. Lets Go Glennon!!! B(F)UC It!!!!

  33. Broy34 Says:

WINSTON ISNT COMING OUT THIS YEAR GET EDUCATED PEOPLE

  34. Buck Rogers Says:

I have a problem drafting a QB in the first round, unless there is a Luck in the draft ! I don’t see that happening! Which means if we draft a QB in first round we are reaching!!!!!!!!! Then in a couple of years we are in the same position as we are now. 2015 draft best player available !

  35. Mike10 Says:

    How u figure Broy?

  36. lurker Says:

winston is coming out because he is tired of school and will want to be paid so he doesn’t need to steal the crab legs. hell, jumbo fischer is tired of winston and his antics.

  37. WalkdaPlank Says:

Watching Winston off the field with his antics and childish behavior make me want to give him the good ‘ol left hook.

Then I watch him on the field and find myself wishing he was the Bucs’ QB. 🙁

  38. Capt.Tim- whatever Says:

    Meltdown for Mariota

  39. Tank4Jameis Says:

I love Mariota. I live in Honolulu and they’re so proud of him here. The local news shows his Saturday highlights before they show the results of the University of Hawaii. I hope he wins the Heisman and I’ve seen him play probably 15 games. He’s great and will probably be a good qb in the NFL. I will root for him, no matter what team he plays for, but I sure as hell hope its not the Bucs if JW5 is available.
I think MM will be good but I KNOW JW5 will be a perrineal probowler. He’s a can’t miss talent like Luck or Manning. The risk of him doing something stupid and getting suspended in the NFL is significantly less than the risk that MM can’t adjust to an NFL offense.

  40. Brandon Says:

Mariota, or if we get on a roll and win a couple, Brett Hundley, perhaps we wait until round 2 and look at Petty, Mannion, or that crazy productive kid from ECU, Shane Carden.

  41. Finishers Says:

    you can do it Glennon!!!

  42. BoJim Says:

Here’s your chance Mike. Even if you’re being thrown into the fire again.

  43. nate Says:

Its a race between us and the texans for mariota!

  44. Flmike Says:

If we have any pick within the top three, we’ll be hiring a new HC and staff as well. Make it a package deal hire HeLfrich and draft Mariota, I actually like Licht as GM.

  45. SteveK Says:

A lot of you sad pukes, that call yourself fans, are all hoping for losses?

That’s pathetic. I hope the Bucs win, always. Go Glennon, I hope he wins us some games so we can see the some fans’ true colors.

Guarantee it, if we win some games ppl will be getting more pissed. Lol love it.

  46. buc4lyfe Says:

1st quarterback draft pick here we come

  47. Nybucsfan Says:

You need a QB in the NFL we don’t have one. You can’t win with out one. Sometime you need the top draft pick to rebuild look at Indy or Carolina top QB and the teams are moving up in ranks

  48. Kalind Says:

Winston or Hundley. Petty as an emergency option. I don’t like Mariotta. At all. I see RG3 when I watch him. I don’t need that in my life.

  49. Flmike Says:

And Winston is JaMarcus Russell and Vince Young rolled into one giant moron. The kid is going to be a huge disaster…give that idiot a large sum of money and just sit back and watch the circus…no way.

  50. james west Says:

Bryce petty has some very good, solid numbers, good character, and poise under pressure, and would be a great pick for any team who is need for a QB and would be an improvement over the ordained one L&L gave us. oh well could have, should have been addressed last year. we will wait and see, our spot in the draft will certainly dictate where and who we go for, although famous jameis is a top talent, his character issues scare me, I would shy away. but hey, he is young, and for a team in dire need for QB play, the bucs might pull the trigger. but I would almost venture to say, as long as lovie is in the picture, he will somehow, someway, screw this up also.
