Folks Down On McCown

September 9th, 2014

josh mccown 0812Yes, it was just the first game of the season. Yes, it was a loss. No, the season is not over. But Bucs quarterback Josh McCown made such a lasting impression, and not a good one, that it may take a few weeks of solid play (and a few sick packs) for Bucs fans to forget what they witnessed.

McCown’s reckless disregard for ball security not only cost the Bucs the game, but scared the hell out of Joe that an 11-year NFL vet would have the same discipline as a scared high school sophomore.

It was enough for Pat Yasinskas of ESPN to slap McCown with the “falling” label.

Josh McCown: He didn’t play the way you would expect from a veteran quarterback and made two bad decisions that turned into interceptions. McCown rallied in the fourth quarter, but it was too little too late. The Bucs need him to be sharp the entire game.

The stat geeks over at Pro Football Focus were a little more direct in their critique of McCown, likening his play to something akin to sandlot football played by children.

McCown’s move from throwing to one set of massive receivers to another brings some comfort I’m sure, but the playgroundish free-wheeling approach he took in Week 1 didn’t pay off as a pair of his ill-advised, desperate flips landed in the hands of the enemy. A -3.6 passing grade was the result, a mark that has him set in with the league’s lowest five QBs.

It was jarring for Joe to watch. He never thought he would see an NFL veteran make such boneheaded mistakes and play with such a careless attitude about taking care of the football.

Some of us were never “up” on old man mcCown. So he was what we said he was. Maybe he will look average if he is still starting against the worst NFL defenses like he did last year.

The MGM is holding the doors open for new applicants, and accepting all.

  2. Clintro Says:

He is not going to be a probowl QB… he just has to stop making the bone headed plays.

If her would have done that, we might have won.

  3. BucsFan47 Says:

McCown showed what everyone thought, Glennon is just a better QB. He doesn’t make bone headed plays and would have won us the game rather than lose it for us.

Please Lovie, do yourself and us a favor…

    START MIKE GLENNON!!!

  4. RastaMon Says:

McClown failed in the role he was asked to play…basic color inside the lines 101

  5. robert9 Says:

I said before I supported lovies decision as he has the info.

but the TV doesn’t lie. mcclown sucked out loud. almost as bad as shawn king with his drop the ball while trying to throw for no reason play.

it was the worst i have seen since then. even gradkowski was better and his noodle arm could pitch slow pitch softball.

glennon is head and shoulders above mcclown, and if lovie sticks with his man, well he’s lost my respect. shamefull he was not pulled this week.

  6. Evan Says:

    @BucsFan47

I don’t think you remember Glennon playing last year?

He wasn’t bad but there were plenty of boneheaded mistakes.

  7. Wombat Says:

I can remember everyone dreaming he would be another Rich Gannon or Kurt Warner, the difference with those two was that when they finally got there chance to start for an NFL team, they never looked back. McCown is a backup QB, always has been, always will be…. He will play lights out next week then two games down the road have you pulling your hair out!

  8. Patrick in VA Says:

Gonna have a hard time getting to 19-9 if this rate of play continues

  9. ruggyup Says:

Refreshing and encouraging to hear Joe finally take a realistic line on the matter. Glad he spoke out. Recognize it folks, McGowan is the chosen one. Preordained. Now you see it is what it is not.

  10. RealityCheck Says:

Next week will finalize it for me. If we don’t win, and any blame at all can be placed on McCown, then he should be benched. I mean what kind of experiment is this anyway? Best case scenario we get 2 “good” years out of him and then he retires and we start over. What’s the point? Glennon can only learn so much from the bench. And there was never a game, even as a rookie, that Glennon looked as bad as McCown did last Sunday.

  11. buc'd Up Says:

It took a couple days but im finally over it. Fans are gonna get pissed when that type of poor play makes the field. But, Im already getting pumped about this Sunday. Bring it on, Im not as optimistic as I was last week but im eager to see how this team responds and moves forward.

  12. BigMacAttack Says:

The interceptions wouldn’t be as bad if they were taking shots 50yds down the field. But wait, those wouldn’t have been intercepted because the receivers were wide open.

  13. The_Buc_Realist Says:

    @Evans

You mean this rookie that played with a lot less weapons and many players on ir?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IeDzn78MiYg

I would rather see this then old man mcCown! I guess we have to wait till week 8 to see MG8!!!

  14. Greg Says:

    Wow
That’s our savior coach Lovie hand picking our QB.
We will be crying for Schiano brfore the season is over.

  15. buc'd Up Says:

Rasta, your last statement made it sound like any fool that grew up chucking a football in his back yard can play qb. Im afraid there is a little more to it than that. I agree with a lot of what fans are saying, but c’mon man!

  16. robert9 Says:

here’s what i saw from mcclown

    indecisivness
    BAD decision making
    inability to read the defense
    missing wide open guys
overwhelmed-head in hands on the sideline
    FEAR!!!

even when Glennon goes down or makes a mistake he walks off with his head up and straight to the playbook.

    START THE “CANNON”

  17. Mathius Says:

    Bucs go 15 – 1

  18. Architek Says:

We don’t have a real qb

  19. RealityCheck Says:

@The_Buc_Realist – I love that flea flicker at the end – 60 yards through the air right on target. I don’t see why that play isn’t run more often, it’s not even that risky and it always sucks the defense in.

  20. jo_mama Says:

Don’t let Lovie Smith off the Hook for anything.

    No QB competition allowed.
    No Incognito
    No Mike Williams
    No Offensive Line
Chose to have Leslie Fraser as a coach.

  21. Jonny 2.3 Says:

Glennon will not take unnecessary risks yes, but he isn’t that accurate either and against that pass rush, could have easily thrown interceptions or be completely inept the whole game. We saw 12 games of Glennon last year and how he reacted against pressure. Even the preseason when ever there was pressure he played pretty bad, showing no progression. I don’t understand this Glennon love just because McCown played bad.

Fact of the matter is, we have two backup QBs where one is better than the other with the kind of team we have. The better one, believe it or not, is still McCown. Also down 17-0 there is no way in hell Glennon bounces back and brings the game close. All of last year he progressively got worse as games went on. The only exceptions were when everybody and their grandma knew the game was over, he had a couple of garbage time TDs against Rams and Saints I believe.

  22. Ray Rice Says:

Man sure hope it was a case of just him trying to do too much. He did settle down in the 4th quarter. And no Carolina was not playing prevent. Look at the tape. On both scoring drives Mccown operated an uptempo offense out of the shotgun a lot and kept the Panthers defense on the field. Even Hardy was seen with his hands on his waist. I really hope to see more of this fast pace quick release stuff. Looks like we are going to have to open up the run game with the pass game. Our run game is horrible…… Hey Tampa Im available! #RayRice

  23. nate_tweetz Says:

Where’s Rex Grossman when you need him!!! LOL

  24. RastaMon Says:

    LaMichael James……

  25. Architek Says:

    No Mike Williams???

Ummm sooo what is he suppose to be and how would he help this team???

  26. bucrightoff Says:

I’ll keep saying it: One more week and that’s it. Another week like last week and Glennon has to go in if only because we need to know what he is. Besdies at 0-2 he can provide a spark and this season still isn’t totally lost. But McCown regressed to his mean, a backup QB, rather than his anamoly, his 6 game run last year.

  27. bucrightoff Says:

OH and if you still think McCown is better than Glennon, it’s cause you hate Glennon. No other logical reason. At best McCown is even with Glennon. And please don’t use if Glennon was better he’d be starting, because remember who our coach is…

    “Rex Grossman is my quarterback”

  28. Krezimir Kozik Says:

Can you say Jamies “I love crab legs ” Winston in 2016?

  29. nate_tweetz Says:

Both our QB’s suck. McCown is garbage, but so is Glennon. I’m not dying to see either of these guys trying to carry our team.

  30. lightningbuc Says:

    jo mama,

    Don’t forget:

    NO cussing

  31. willie d Says:

Ponder this get freaking ponder now! Even Tyrell Pryor would be an upgrade. At least give Glennon the damn ball. McQB has been a cookie cutter ball managing below average QB his whole career, I wonder how much he had to pay Lovie to get a contract.

  32. james west Says:

7th pick plenty QB’s left on the board, and yea we needed help at receiver but damn you need someone to throw the ball to them! there is a reason lovie was fired in chitown, and spent a year in his basement watching football-He could not get it done. just like dungy until he got peyton. in this league you got to have a QB, he don’t have to be elite but should be above average in my opinion, one that can consistently move the chains and put your team in position to score. also there is an all pro right guard out there, begging to be signed. I know – I know he bullied a 350 pound man wasn’t like he knocked his girlfriend out in an elevator or hanged to death some poor pit bull or something like that! but mankins on the left and incognito on the right, and we might be able to give either one of these QB’s some much needed time to do their job and I personally do not care who it is ! as long as I don’t see another opposing team laughing and yucking it up in our house again. and by the way why is it and who said that tampa after all these years , cannot have or be allowed to have an elite QB, one that can put his team on his back and win!!!!!!

  33. Mike Says:

I’m not MGM, but will say this. McCown in our last game made Glennon look like a vet in his rookie season. Did Glennon make head scratching plays? Yes he did! I’ll never forget the fumble against Carolina last season drove me crazy because nobody was near him…. But he never looked as bad as McCown did Sunday. I understand it’s only the 1st game thing. I’m trying to look at it that way. If McCown does the same things against the Rams…… Well I’ll become a full member of the MGM! I’m just not seeing what Lovie sees in this this guy. I’d rather deal with JF#5 then another game like that. At least I knew what JF#5 was capable of….. Just saying

  34. DB55 Says:

Leslie Frazier just as bad as McCown. Joe not sure why you’re surprised he showed what he could do in the preseason.

  35. Buccfan37 Says:

Glennon may get his shot to erase the negativity of the anti Glennon mob. It will probably take a while though. McCown will probably yo yo as someone suggested. It may take a injury to unseat McCown, I don’t want that to happen. Glennon has youth and height to his advantage, his rookie showing was’nt that bad. MG8 would of hit those open receivers Sunday.

  36. NJBucsFan Says:

6th Best QB in the NFC South

  37. Warren Says:

Not on the Glennon bandwagon yet, though I thought he did a pretty great job last year as a rookie for the most part. Iwas never a fan of the change so that’s saying something that he sort of won me over…but I guess expectations were also pretty low. With Tedford back, I expect the playcalling to improve and hopefully we hit some sort of stride as an offense. If McCown seems more part of the problem than the solution when everything is in place, I am sure Lovie et al won’t have a problem replacing him.

  38. Warren Says:

    NJBucsFan – that’s a pretty damning statement…lol

  39. buddha Says:

    Bull! This is crazy.

  40. KeithInTampa Says:

I don’t get the “Glennon Bandwagon” folks….It’s as if they are calling for some pro-bowl QB that’s on our bench here in Tampa, and that surely is not the Mike Glennon that we all saw last year and even in the 2014 pre-season!

I too was disappointed in McCown’s decision making and the interceptions were “Dilferish”; but it’s too soon to pull the plug. Like Buc’d Up and Reality Check, (and a few others here) and believe that we need to see what happens against St. Louis next week….Hopefully McCown can calm down, and we see the “Gannon/Warner/Palmer” that we’re all hoping for!

  41. Incognito Says:

Excellent description of McClown Joe: “reckless disregard for ball security”

  42. bucrightoff Says:

The last QB to throw more than 1 TD pass against Seattle (and the list includes Brees, Matt Ryan, Kaepernick, Rodgers, Peyton)? Oh yeah, it’s Glennon, and that was in Seattle to boot. People acting like he’s garbage need to seriously let it go, it simply isn’t true.

  43. willie d Says:

Ponder this, get PONDER NOW! probably for a 4th round draft and you can tyrell pryor free.

  45. The_Buc_Realist Says:

    @mpmalloy

are you saying that Old man mcCown is better than TJ Yates and The younger Luke McCown?? That might be debatable!!!

  46. Bobby Says:

The thing people don’t like about Glennon is that he isn’t flashy. He’s not a scrambling QB like Wilson or nimble like Brees. He is a true pocket passer that needs a good O-line. What he is is efficient. He doesn’t make a lot of mistakes or stupid decisions as evidenced by 19-9. We really don’t know what he is capable of with the weapons we have now and I expect that if McCown has another performance like we saw against the Panthers we’ll all get a chance to see what Glennon is capable of for the rest of the season. I just don’t see how he can do any worse than McCown. If Glennon isn’t our QB of the future we need to know and we need to know now.

  47. buc4lyfe Says:

    Josh McClown !!!!!

  48. 00Buc Says:

In my humble estimation I believe we will see Glennon take over in game 3. Lovey knows this is the last week Mecown can start if he pisses a crooked stream this week. Mccown is a good guy but not a starting QB.

  49. Buc1987 Says:

Ponder this Willie D. I’m a big, big FSU fan. I say hell no to Ponder.

  50. simeon 97 Says:

We didn’t find some diamond in the rough. McCown stinks. He was great last year as he had huge physical receivers, time to throw the ball, and a game plan that threw hail marys downfield for the receivers to up and get. a number of these catches were acrobatic moves by Alshon Jeffery and would have been incomplete with 9 out of 10 receivers. Did the bucs staff take this into consideration when making their decision? Maybe the o-line plays better and he has time to toss it up, but do we really want him managing anything other than that?

This guy has been a career backup for a reason. His interceptions on Sunday were worse than anything i saw on SATURDAY this past weekend. Toss this BUM.

I really liked the point on Glennon going into Seattle someone posted above.

  51. Incognito Says:

We need some competition for McClown not a statue like glennon.
Glennons prob not a bad QB with good protection a luxury not meant to be in Tampa.

  52. Warthog Says:

McCowns mistakes sure were frustrating, but not as frustrating as his reluctance to take a shot at the end of the game. Final drive of the game, we have giant WRs and he is throwing check downs instead of Hail Marys? We were behind, it was our only chance to win and he still wouldn’t throw the ball up? Terrible. Garciaesque.

  53. Hawk Says:

Let’s see the ‘leadership’ of McCown before we call for his head. ANY QB can have a bad game (or in this case, terrible). A true leader will brush himself off, take responsibility, and be better the next time. The Rams should give him an opportunity to show that this game was an aberration. I am not a big fan of McCown, although I thought he was the best ‘fit’ for the Bucs, among the veteran free agents. My problem with McCown doesn’t go back any farther than last season. McCown ‘looked’ good, but what kind of ‘talent’ was McCown up against? Chicago played 5 games against teams who ended up with winning records. That’s five, f-i-v-e.
The Bucs (Glennon) played 9 (n-i-n-e) games against teams who ended up with winning records. The win % of Chicago’s opponents was .86%. The win % of the Bucs’s opponents was 1.35%.
Chicago played only 1 (one) team that made it as far as the Divisional Playoffs.
The Bucs (Glennon) played 3 of the 4 teams in the Conference Championships.
And the five games that McCown played were against teams with a MAXIMUM of eight wins (out of 16 games) for the season. Two of those teams had top 15 defenses, and the other three were between #25 and #32. With that level of competition, it’s a wonder McCown didn’t win all five games.
All that being said, I’m not ready to throw McCown out. It was ONE game, and against a very good defense. Let us see how McCown rebounds this week.
BTW, I am one of those who believe that Glennon has the potential to be an outstanding QB… but not today. He never got the opportunity to be coached and/or mentored properly. *I* would like to see him watch and learn for as long as possible.

    ——————

At least he has that, looking good against bad defenses. Glennon didn’t. He looked like doggy doo doo almost every time out. If Glennon were in the same position as McCown, he would’ve been even worse. There is absolutely nothing from last year or this preseason that suggests Glennon could’ve/would’ve done better.

  55. Trubucfan22 Says:

McCown didn’t give up on the plays. I love the effort he put forth, obviously the result was terrible. But the fact that he gave it his all and came up short is better the glennon motto, “my only read is the check down, if not there then fall over or throw it away.” And don’t forget, “always give up, never throw to a wr with a defender within 50 yards of him, too risky.”
