Derek Anderson In Carolina Production Meeting
September 6th, 2014Last week Stinking Panthers starting quarterback Cam Newton missed two practices due to injured ribs. Stinking Panthers coach Ron Rivera said the decision to play Newton, who was throwing passes Friday, would be a game-time call Sunday.
So, unless Rivera is trying to pull an unprecedented act of gamesmanship, Newton really is in bad shape.
Saturday, in a mandatory production meeting with the FOX crew who will work the game, not only did Newton show up, but so too did his backup, Derek Anderson.
Pregame production meetings are strictly reserved for coaches and/or coordinators, and a handful of starters at the most. Former Bucs great Ronde Barber, calling the Bucs-Carolina game along with Chris Myers, told SiriusXM NFL Radio Saturday that from what he learned from his TV colleagues, Anderson attending a production meeting was, well, different.
It is possible Barber may have broken some form of protocol here by going on SiriusXM NFL Radio to talk about this. Usually, news learned from the production meetings is reserved for the game broadcast only. Maybe Rivera had an inkling Barber might tip off someone, given his tight relationship to the Bucs and Lovie Smith, and did this to throw off both Barber and the Bucs?
Or perhaps Joe is thinking too much?
Regardless, if Newton plays, he’s not 100 percent. With hurt ribs — and injured ribs are just a nasty kind of pain (Joe’s had bruised ribs before and just breathing or coughing is an adventure) — he’s not going to want to run much because he will get drilled and he will go through a helluva jolt of agony in the process.
Oh, and since it is going to be so hot tomorrow, he should enjoy wearing that really thick flak jacket. Drink your fluids, Cam. You’re going to need them.

Smokescreen! Unless his rib is sticking through his skin or he’s spitting up blood, Newton will play. Even one loss in a 16 game season is a big deal. Either he plays or he’s softer than I think…and that is saying something!
September 6th, 2014 at 9:59 pm
I’m starting to believe the Carolina panthers are going to sit Cam Newton just so that they don’t risk the whole season. I’m certain they would won’t a completely healthy Newton for 15 games then two risk his health over one game.
September 6th, 2014 at 10:12 pm
Will never hear Joe call anyone with cracked ribs “soft” for not playing.
September 6th, 2014 at 10:20 pm
“Who gets to Newton first; David or McCoy?”
September 6th, 2014 at 10:25 pm
Injured ribs hurts like a Bi*&h. Regardless, I think Cam will start. However at some point, either thru getting hit or being ineffective, Newton will feel the Kryptonite and I expect Mr. McCoy will introduce himself to Mr. Anderson.
September 6th, 2014 at 10:29 pm
Joe, I have had cracked ribs before too. As you say they are quite painful and there is no way to expedite the healing process with them. One thing I distinctly remember was how hard it was to breathe when I needed a good amount of oxygen in my lungs from running. That severely limited my ability TOO run. So if he plays look for that Sunday too!
September 6th, 2014 at 10:40 pm
I remember waaayy to many times watching a back up QB playing like a pro bowler and making us look like chumps. I want Cam to play and the Bucs to beat their best. No * next to this win.
September 6th, 2014 at 10:44 pm
As much as I crave a victory Sunday I agree with Aceofaerospace, no asterick next to this outcome. Besides I want to see our guys face the best of the other team so we can truly see just what we have. GO BUCS!!!!!
September 6th, 2014 at 10:44 pm
They are scared of the bucs.. Oh Ya…
September 6th, 2014 at 10:44 pm
I hope he plays. We can beat them when he’s healthy.
September 6th, 2014 at 10:44 pm
@ Harry…
I agree he might start because he has a huge ego….but a couple of thumps by GMC or LVD…..or how ’bout one of those new “low target” hits on a safety blitz from the Hawk….
He will be finshed!!!
September 6th, 2014 at 10:48 pm
I’d much rather face a broken Cam than his backup. He will not play like a franchise QB with the amount of pain he’s going to be in. I’ll take this guy in this shape every day as an opponent. The Panthers are taking a gamble putting him on the field. May cost them their season if it backfires.
September 6th, 2014 at 11:03 pm
Hey Joe I don’t know if you have a word limit but I’d love more emphasis on Stinking and Panthers.
Examples:
Last week Stinking Panthers starting quarterback Cam Newton missed two practices due to injured ribs. Stinking Panthers coach Ron Rivera said the decision to play Newton, who was throwing passes Friday, would be a game-time call Sunday, for the Stinking Panthers.
Former Bucs great Ronde Barber, calling the Bucs-Stinking Panthers game along with Chris Myers, told SiriusXM NFL Radio Saturday that from what he learned from his TV colleagues,Stinking Panthers Anderson attending a production meeting was, well, different.
Drink your fluids, Cam. You’re going to need them. Ya Stinking Panther.
Sure it may seem unprofessional or disrespectful, but when you’re a Bucs fan, Who Cares!? They’re still the Stinking Panthers!

The guy above makes a great point. Backup qb’s always shred us, I don’t know why but it happens every single time. I want Cam to start and I want us to put some big hits on him.
September 6th, 2014 at 11:19 pm
Backup QB curse our Bucs have. Vharlie Batch (who’s still playing, I just learned) whipped us multiple times. Although when we lost to Foles I didn’t feel too bad because you could tell he was a pretty sharp QB.

Listen folks, I’ll take the backup all day. Back in ’02 on our way to the 12-4 and a Lombardi…we feasted on the scrubbiest of all the scrub quarterbacks (Randy Fasano and Akili Smith anyone?)…Cam healthy or banged up is still an elite athlete capable of beating you on any one play.
September 7th, 2014 at 12:15 am
I have a selfish reason wanting Newton to start–if GMC lights him up we not only win this game but our second game with them too.
September 7th, 2014 at 12:16 am
I fully expect Cam to play, and I don’t think he’s going to be that bothered by the injury. I would guess he would get a nice little shot that will take care of most of the pain. I don’t care if he plays or not, I just want a win. I would, however, feel much more confident in that happening with Derek Anderson playing QB.
September 7th, 2014 at 12:32 am
Bruised ribs are totally different than a broken Rib.
Broken rib and you are not playing until healthy.
Tough has nothing to do with it.
You can tough out a knee an ankle etc. But not a rib.
September 7th, 2014 at 12:44 am
According to Ian Beckles, they will just shoot him up, and he’ll be ready to go.
September 7th, 2014 at 12:45 am
Brad Johnson played through broken ribs.
September 7th, 2014 at 12:48 am
He missed a couple of games, didn’t he? Pittsburgh and Chicago?
September 7th, 2014 at 1:07 am
romo. broken rib, and colapsed lung.
they have GREAT drugs on the sideline.
September 7th, 2014 at 1:46 am
Don’t care which QB plays. Just put a beat down on the Stinkin Panthers.
September 7th, 2014 at 1:47 am
Its a bluff and there way of getting back at us for never seeing our offense or plays…
September 7th, 2014 at 1:47 am
I’m too damn excited I can’t sleep.tampaaaaaaa
September 7th, 2014 at 6:40 am
b.Bruce… me too. I’m up way too early for a Sunday a.m. baaaaaay
September 7th, 2014 at 7:42 am
“romo. broken rib, and colapsed lung. ”
He can’t play with good ribs.
Our defense is different this year. Not only can they play their positions, the coaches want their best performances, not gimmicks. The players know how to improvise. A back-up QB will not be difficult like in the past.
September 7th, 2014 at 8:13 am
This thread is reminding me painfully of last years opening game where our defense was beat up by a less than average rookie QB with not one second of NFL experience. Pulled this quote out of an article from a new york paper … “Despite the uptick in performance at the end of the year, an ESPN poll of NFL insiders this summer ranked Smith as the worst starting quarterback in the league.
The 32nd rank QB in the league beat us last year. If the Bucs D is not ready to play, it doesn’t matter if its Cam or the Backup.
Will Johnson finally show up? Will McCoy be manning the line by himself again? Is Mike Jenkins really better than Banks? Is Lenord Johnson still just good enough to be on the receivers back pocket to tackle him after his man catches the ball for 12 yards on 3rd and 10? Tons of questions to be answered. Thank god the answers start coming today!!!!!
September 7th, 2014 at 8:17 am
Didn’t really mean for that last post to sound negative. I am fired up ready for the season!!!!! Just a bit cautious and managing my own expectations.
September 7th, 2014 at 8:49 am
Perhaps I’m in the minority but I hope he does play. He’ll be flight jacketed looking like the staypuff marshmellow man, he missed OTA’s and a lot of training camp with his ankle injury. His entire receiving core is new and his o-line is worse than ours.
Cam, in the pocket, unable to move around like Cam….yeah give me that instead of Derek Anderson, whose been there all off-season and worked with that core.
September 7th, 2014 at 8:51 am
dreambig, those who expect failure will get it. Those who “dreambig” will do everything in their power to achieve it.
I understand there’s been a lot of disappointment over the last few years – but I choose to believe in this team until they give me a reason not to.
September 7th, 2014 at 11:08 am
Cam will get hurt, our defence is no joke, Ron Rivera should think this thru before something dreadful happens, just saying……
September 7th, 2014 at 12:25 pm
Cam will not play today. No other reason to explain why the line has jumped from Tampa -2 to Tampa -4 in a matter of a few minutes. Vegas has information nobody else has in all likelihood. No way a 4-12 teams is favored over a 12-4 team by 4 points.
